Chapter Twenty-Two ; One Left Missing
His vision began to go black, but he wasn't ready to give up. "No! I'm not going to die! Not yet!" Varian's voice was strained, but that didn't stop him. Breathing began to get harder and harder, almost like trying to swallow a rock. The air was sharp and cold, unlike the air in Earthland. "Damn you!" He used the little strength he had to lie on his back. 'What can I do? I can't die, not yet. But there's no magic here!' He groaned as the pain in his chest increased. 'Can't hurt to try.' He imagined a sword, every detail painted precisely onto the hilt, the blade molded perfectly, but nothing appeared in his hands. 'Guess there really is no magic here...'
The boy looked up into the grey sky, his vision spotting. "Maybe it's time to give up." He whispered, the woman from before leaning over his dying form.
"That's right, just give up." The woman spoke in Rain's voice.
"Natsu?" Lucy stared at the group of crouched wizards with three blue lines adorning her forehead. "What in the world are you doing?" Natsu jumped up with a grin.
"We were looking for you!" He announced excitedly. He ran at the blonde, wrapping his arms around her, his head on her chest in a hug. Wendy ran up to Erza and hugged her tightly.
"I'm so glad you found us. I was so worried." Erza smiled as she wrapped her arms around the small girl. "Are Gray, Rain, Jellal, and Varian with you?" She grabbed Wendy by her shoulders and looked her deep in the eyes.
The blue haired girl shook her head with worry,"We thought you might all be together."
"Dammit!" Erza muttered under her breath. "Where did you guys come from? How'd you find us?"
Edo-Lucy stepped forward, her arms folded. "Came from the guild hall and used one of Levy's devices to find you. We should get back." She turned to Lucy. "Nice to see you again." Although her voice was mostly monotone, there was a hint of joy in the depths of her voice.
"Yea, nice to see you too." Lucy smiled even though the girl had already turned around.
"Let's get going." The group of Earthland wizards began to exit the village.
"Wait!" Lucy called out as she spotted the old man from before. He had a smile on his face, watching them leave. She ran to the man and gave him a smile.
"Thank you for your help."
"It was no problem, young lady." The man pushed her along. "Now, you get going."
Lucy ran back to her group while waving at the man. Erza turned and shot the man a smile as they crossed the town border. "How far is the hall?"
"Not too far," Edo-Lucy replied from the front of the group.
"Can't we run? We'll get there much faster!" Natsu complained, his hands on the back of his head.
"If we ran, we'd lose our energy," Erza stated nonchalantly.
"I can have Natsu come and pick us up in his car," Edo-Lucy suggested.
"That would be great, thank you!" Lucy exclaimed.
"I'm done!" Edo-Levy ran down the steps, a small rectangular device in her cupped hands. Rain shot up, heading over to the blue-haired girl. "Here's your charm." She dropped the shooting star charm into Rain's hand.
"Can we use it?" The Elemental Devil Slayer was extremely hopeful, anyone could hear it in her voice.
"Here you go, try it!" Levy was excited to see her device in action. Rain took the device and pressed the red button. It took a few moments, but a dim blue ball of light formed in the air. It began to move, but this one was moving quicker than the one from before. It seemed to be in a rush and the light was dimming rapidly.
"Follow it!" Gray called out, chasing after the light, right behind Rain. There was no way they could walk, if they even slowed down, the ball would get away from them.
Just as Jellal began to chase after them, Edo-Wendy stepped forward. "You should stay here so the others can see that your group is okay." Jellal sighed and nodded, sitting back down in one of the seats near the door. There were two picnic tables set up vertically by the windows beside the doors, which was where Mystogan and Jellal sat.
"Faster!" Rain called out to Gray. "It's speeding up!"
"Why is it moving so fast?" Gray cried out in annoyance.
"The light is dimming too!" Rain's breath stopped in her throat as she realized what that meant. "He's dying, Gray! Hurry up!" She wanted to cry, but she had to be strong. He was still alive, after all.
"I am!" The two spotted a hill covered in dead grass and flowers. Just vaguely, Rain spotted two figures up on the hill.
"I can see them!" The girl sped up, almost reaching the speed of the light. Gray had trouble keeping up, but he was just fast enough to keep her in his sight. "Dammit!" She cried out as she failed to run up the hill with her previous speed.
"Calm down, Rain! Worrying yourself isn't going to help him!" Gray had been able to catch up while she struggled to get up the hill.
"I know!" She called back, taking a deep breath. The dark haired girl focused on getting up the hill instead of her speed and, surprisingly, she was able to go faster than before. The ball of light hadn't left her sight, but it was much farther ahead than before. "Varian!" She yelled desperately. "Don't you dare give up!" Her voice cracked, but it was strong.
The silver-haired boy jerked upwards, Rain had come for him. "She's okay." He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.
"You incessant Earthland mages." The woman jumped up, transforming back into her elderly woman form. Rain climbed up to the top of the hill and stumbled over to Varian, holding his hand in hers. She leaned over him, her head dropped downward.
"Don't you dare give up." She repeated faintly, tears dropping from her cheeks to his shirt. She squeezed her eyes shut, holding his hand as tightly as she could.
He raised his trembling hand, fear dwelling in his heart, and wiped away her tears. "Don't cry." He smiled weakly. "It's okay."
"No! You can't leave me! You promised!" The grey-eyed beauty shook her head violently,"You promised!" She sobbed, falling onto his chest. "You promised." She sobbed uncontrollably, while Gray fought the witch that had put Varian in that state.
"Then I guess you have to save me... huh?" Varian choked out, holding Rain's hand tightly.
"Rain! Stop sobbing and get him back to the guild hall!" Gray shouted, kicking the grey-haired woman to the ground.
The girl nodded,"Thank you, Gray." She whispered, sliding her arm under Varian's neck and her other arm under his knees. Slowly, she got up and made her way down the hill carefully.
"R-Rain...?" Varian breathed.
"Yes?" Rain held back her tears as she smiled at the weak boy in her arms.
"Promise you'll stay alive even if I'm gone. Promise me you'll stay with Fairy Tail."
Erza, Lucy, Natsu, Wendy, and the exceeds burst through the guild doors. "We're back!" Natsu announced, Edo-Lucy following behind him.
"Erza!" Jellal jumped up, relief flooding his mind.
"Jellal! Are the others with you?" She asked urgently.
"Not right now. Gray and Rain were in my group, but when we got here Levy helped in tracking down Varian, so they're out trying to get him back."
"Varian was all alone?" Lucy exclaimed with worry. "Why'd he have to be the one to be alone?"
