Chapter Twenty ; Despair
It had been a while, but Natsu and the gang were finally landing next to the Edo-Fairy Tail guild hall. Wendy's hair flew up, pulling at her head. She laughed, trying to fight her motion sickness best she could, remembering when Rain had given her a ride on her back. Natsu, however, wasn't able to fight the terrible motion sickness. He rolled around the helicopter. "Natsu!" Edo-Lucy shrieked, both Natsu's looked at her in fear.
"S-sorry!" Edo-Natsu squeaked while landing the helicopter on the ground, while Edo-Lucy groaned at their stupidity. Natsu jumped up and stepped onto the ground.
"Sweet, sweet land!" he cried, kissing the ground. Happy laughed at Natsu's crazed state, while Natsu yelled at him for laughing.
Carla grabbed Wendy's hand as everyone followed Edo-Lucy into the building, which was no longer a tree. It was a small, grey building with all types of things sticking out of it. "Since there's no magic here, our guild hall is just an apartment building. We all live together."
Wendy rubbed the back of her head. "I could never imagine that back at home."
Edo-Mira threw open the gates with a smile. "Welcome back, guys!" people yelled out joyfully from inside.
Natsu ran in, eager to see their apartment building. The bottom floor was a bar with white tiles and marble tables. There was a set of steps in the back right-hand corner and a bar at the back left-hand corner. Edo-Mira watched in anticipation, hope clouding her eyes. 'Maybe... Maybe Lisanna is here too.'
People sat on benches, drinking or eating various items. "Hello!" Wendy smiled at the people in the apartment complex.
Gray shook Rain rapidly. "Wake up, dammit!" he hissed until she finally opened her eyes.
"Gray?" She blushed a little, but it quickly faded as she noticed his horror-struck expression. "What's wrong?"
"Jellal! He's gone missing!" Rain gave a gasp of surprise and raised her throbbing head.
"I've got it. You get this man out of here." She stood, her knees still shaking. "And this is not up for debate." She started walking towards the light that, hopefully, was the exit of the cave. Soon enough, her figure was swallowed whole by the ethereal light. Gray sighed and heaved Mystogan's battered body into his arms.
Varian looked at the woman with confusion. "How-?"
The old woman smiled. "Don't speak, son. Save your energy." She thrust a bowl of soup into his hands. For some odd reason, there was an odd glow illuminating from it. He examined it cautiously, but hunger eventually overtook him and he took the small teaspoon into his mouth. It tasted like a normal bowl of soup, but the flavors seemed enhanced- the meat was muskier, the vegetables were tangier, and the sauce... well, at this point he didn't care what he was eating.
"This- this is delicious!" He ate the food like a starving wolf. Soon enough, the soup disappeared, along with two bottles of water, a pack of chips, and other fruits and vegetables the elderly woman had on hand.
"You should have enough magic energy, now," the woman muttered, her lips curving into a smile.
Lucy and Erza were left with a heap of blankets and pillows to sleep comfortably. The blonde-haired girl stretched out on the floral mattress and yawned, but the latter was too stressed to relax. "What if-"
Lucy cut Erza off with annoyance. "Sleep. We'll do them no good if we're too tired to walk." She switched sides and cuddled her blanket. The scarlet-haired woman sighed and stared up at the ceiling.
"Okay..." Her mind spun with dizzying thoughts until slowly, then all at once, she was dragged into the oblivion of sleep.
Jellal hadn't spoken for the past two hours and Gray was beginning to grow worried. They had all met back up and escaped the odd place they were trapped in. The blue-haired man kept staring blankly at the terracotta homes they passed by and every few minutes would bump into a civilian, then apologize absentmindedly.
And there was Rain. The girl was quieter than normal, which was probably due to her head, though she insisted it was minor, the look Mystogan had given Gray when examining her head hadn't been a good one. As for Mystogan... Gray was afraid he would pass out again. All this stress was making the ice mage jumpy. He longed for Lucy and Erza... and even Natsu... if only another Fairy Tail wizard was here to bear all his anxiety.
"It isn't far from here," Mystogan said. "We'll get somebody to check out the girl's injuries."
"Her name is Rain," Gray said, kindly.
"Rain," he repeated. "Right." He paused. "Is she... a new Fairy Tail member?"
Gray nodded silently.
"That's good. I'm glad Fairy Tail is doing well."
If only he knew.
Varian couldn't breathe.
The more oxygen he tried to inhale, the more his throat constricted. He could feel his heart pounding, the blood in his veins turned to fire. He coiled up in agony.
"Help," the boy gasped, looking up at the woman. She crouched down beside him without a word. "Help," he repeated. Each word took effort.
"You're a fool," the woman said. "to eat food given to you by a stranger."
An acidic taste filled his mouth.
The woman smiled a smile that was not human. It was the smile of a feline playing with its food. Her image rippled, and for a moment, Varian thought the stranger had been merciful enough to leave him to die in peace. But no, she had changed into a girl. A beautiful girl with an even lovelier, impish grin.
Rain.
"You..damn you..." Varian choked. "Eidolon. You have no right to..wear her face."
Spots were beginning to dot the edge of his vision. No, he couldn't die yet. There was so much that needed to be said. He wasn't ready to go.
"I have no right to wear this face, huh?" the eidolon asked in Rain's rosy voice. "Ah. Words from a dying man are ever so sweet."
"Although magic cannot be used in Edolas," Edo-Levy began. "it is still within you Earthland mages. Dormant, but intact. With this new device, I can track your friends."
"It's not new," Edo-Lucy argued, placing her hands on her hips challengingly. "You built it last month. Even though we told you not to."
"Yeah? Well, I regret nothing," the shorter girl replied with a daring smirk.
"Can we just... use it now?" Wendy asked quietly. Everyone turned to her and she shrunk back. Carla tsked disapprovingly.
"You need to speak more confidently," Carla chided.
"Let's get down to business," Natsu insisted, dancing from one foot to the other impatiently. Edo-Natsu nodded in agreement. The two bickering girls turned to scowl at them.
"Okay. Like I was saying before Lucy interrupted-" Levy through the girl a pointed glare. "-we can use this device-" She raised a small, silver gadget to the light. "-and track your friends down by tracing their magic. Ready?"
"Yeah!" Natsu and Wendy said eagerly.
Levy pressed the button.
