Chapter Eighteen ; Edolas In A Mess
"Ahhhhh!" A high pitched scream ripped through the air as Lucy clung to a tree. One of her hand wrapped around the trunk of the tree, while her other hand held her keys.
"Calm down, Lucy!" Erza's voice was quiet against the sound of rushing wind, but the blonde mage could hear her. The scarlet haired girl held the boulder she was previously leaning against.
"What's happening?" Lucy screamed back, shocked and confused.
Erza rolled her eyes, irritated,"The island is falling, what else?"
Lucy grumbled at the woman's response and squeezed the tree tightly. Pressure started to build up, so Erza got down on her hands and knees, clutching the dead grass while crawling to the edge to see if they were about to hit the ground. "I don't see any land!" The requip mage shouted.
"What? Do you mean we'll be falling... forever?" Lucy's voice was oddly high pitched and much quieter due to the wind rushing past their ears.
Rain smiled,"Uhm, I still can't see you though. I used the sound of your footsteps to find you."
Gray sighed and nodded, even though the girl couldn't see him. "Can you see figures?"
"Yea, slightly." Rain replied before Gray moved his hand in front of her.
"Did you see that?"
"Yea."
"Then take my hand," Gray said rather bluntly. A dark blush painted Rain's cheeks, luckily no one could see her.
"What?" Gray took a step back and grabbed her hand.
"This." All of a sudden, Jellal started chuckling.
"What an odd conversation you two just had." He said, footsteps echoing throughout the dark room. Rain's cheeks were dusted pink, her fingers intertwined with Gray's. "I suppose I should join this chain as well." Jellal's footsteps started to fade.
"You're going the wrong way!" Rain shouted, trying to overcome the blush caused by her strange situation.
"Oh." Jellal's voice seemed giddy.
"Why are you so happy?" Gray's monotonous voice rang out.
"I... have no idea."
Natsu flailed his arms, trying to get the furry creatures off his back. Carla was hitting one of them with a stick while Happy screamed in panic. Pantherlily was fighting three of them at the same time. "Shoo, you little monsters!" A familiar voice panicked the small creatures as they scrambled to get away.
Natsu turned to see his old friend, Lucy. Except, this Lucy was from Edolas. "Lucy! Am I glad to see you!" He ran toward the girl, but she dodged him. The boy fell face first onto the dirt.
"Wait a second... how are you here? Isn't this an island?" Pantherlily questioned, walking up to the blond girl.
The girl laughed,"This isn't an island." She walked to the very edge and lied down. "It's a mountain with an odd peak. We place illusions on our territory so if anyone is in them, we can freak them out."
Varian's head throbbed with pain, his eyes started to water, and his feet ached. He could barely even watch as the villagers took all his supplies and ran. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. "F**k." The man muttered as he tried to stand.
He surveyed the area. He sat on a dead patch of grass, near some dead trees, under a gray sky. He sighed,"What a terrible place." He grabbed the rotting tree and leaned against it. He looked around,"Rain!" he called out,"Gray, Jellal, Erza?" he tried again,"Natsu, Lucy? Wendy?"
The man's head started to spin. "Ugh." He grunted, grabbing his head. His vision started to darken as the energy in his legs faded. His eyes closed and his body slid to the ground.
Erza started to yell again,"Of course not!" she paused,"That's not possible is it?"
"I don't know!" Lucy yelled, getting down on her hands and knees. She crawled over to the Scarlet haired mage and grabbed the edge of the island. She glanced down, only to see an odd static like image. For a split second, she could see land. "Erza, I don't think we're falling."
The scarlet haired woman looked at the girl as if she was crazy. "What do you mean? Don't you feel the wind?" Erza screamed.
"Look down!" Lucy said as she reached over the edge. She leaned down and felt something, almost like rocks.
Erza looked at the girl with hesitance before she did the same. "Oh my god." She mouthed while picking up one of the rocks. Lucy smirked knowingly.
"Told you."
Rain rolled her eyes and gripped Gray's hand tightly as she followed Jellal's voice. She felt the smooth ground beneath her, taking that to note. There was no way they were in an enclosed garden or outside anywhere. She noticed a figure, tall like Jellal. "That you?"
"What?" Jellal spoke, but his voice didn't come from that figure... it came from the other side of the room.
Lucy sat up, swinging her legs over the edge. Her foot caught something, so she pushed herself over the edge. "Edo-Lucy!" Wendy screamed panicked.
Natsu laughed,"I'm sure she's fine."
The sound of laughter came from underneath them,"Copy what I did, dimwit."
The salmon haired boy smiled brightly, he was right. He copied the girl's exact movements, but it wasn't a girl who grabbed his hand. "Ah!" He squealed.
"Sorry, sorry!" Edo-Natsu's small voice reached Natsu's ears before he was pulled onto the peak of a small mountain.
Carla, Happy, and Lily followed Natsu's lead, but Wendy cowered behind. "I'm scared," Wendy whined.
"Come, child. Nothing will happen." Carla's voice vibrated the ground.
"O-Okay..." Her voice was small and frail. As soon as the girl's legs appeared, Earthland Natsu grabbed her legs. "Ah!" Her high pitched scream echoed through the land. Natsu sighed and pulled her down. Once she was on the ground, she surveyed the mountain. The island was on top of it so that is looked like it was a floating island.
Varian was knocked out cold, grey particles working up his legs. They were draining his life force because there wasn't any magic for them to suck up. Varian's face paled as he fought to stay up. "H-help." His voice was small and weak. "Please..." His eyes finally closed, his exhaustion getting the best of him.
Lucy sat, swinging her legs over the edge. She moved her foot around, finding some ground. She smiled at Erza,"Follow my lead." She jumped into the fog, a small 'thumping' noise reverberating back to her. The scarlet-haired wizard put her faith into Lucy and jumped. Her legs pulled up to her chest in a fetal position as she rolled down a hill.
"Erza?" Lucy's voice resonated throughout the area. The girl's brown eyes followed the wizard as she tumbled down the hill.
Once Erza came to a stop, she jumped up, trying to find balance. "Y-yea?" Her head spun.
"You okay?" Erza looked up at her with a glare.
"Do I seem okay?"
"No..."
Gray noticed the figure and pulled Rain back, behind him. He gripped the girl's hand tightly, eyeing the figure. Rain's cheeks were red, but that wasn't her biggest problem. She leaned close to Gray,"Who could it be?"
Gray used his foot to force her to inch back. "Jellal, get her."
Jellal's hand reached out from the dark, grabbing Rain. "Got it."
The dark haired girl started to get irritated. "I would think that the two of you wouldn't assume a girl is weak just because of her gender. Considering, ya know, Erza?"
Gray growled,"That's not why." He took a step back. "If you're going to save Varian and somehow get some magic power, you're going to need some strength."
Rain's sharp glare softened. "Oh..."
Natsu laughed as he pulled Wendy to her feet. "Well, Luce, let's get climbing!"
Edo-Lucy smirked,"Oh, it's much easier than that." She pulled out an odd rectangular box with small round fabric covered buttons. She pressed a big, red, rectangular one.
"What did that do?" Carla spoke up, confused. "More importantly, what is that thing?" She pointed to the rectangular box in Lucy's hand.
Lucy laughed,"It's called a remote. There's a flying car coming up here now. It's called a Helicopter."
A strong wind started to blow the wizards back, in front of them an odd looking machine flew up. It had something rotating above it, presumably keeping it in the air. Edo-Natsu jumped in and threw a wooden ladder out, allowing the wizards to climb on. "Jump in!"
Varian's body lied on the ground, sprawled out. The place looked like it was meant to kill people. Death was all around, in fact, there was a graveyard right behind him.
The gray particles had traveled up to his thighs. His legs were a dull gray color, while his breathing started to slow. The poor boy looked like he was dying... again.
"Not again." Groaned the silver-haired man. He looked around, once again he was in a dark room.
"Back already?" The same deep voice erupted through the room.
"Seems so." Varian sighed.
"How are you dying this time?" The voice asked, walking up to him. The being was now pure light, so Varian couldn't look straight at it.
"No idea." The wizard shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm not required to give you the test again." The being paused,"You can use a telepathic connection to get help."
Varian's head snapped up,"What?"
"You can use the power of your mind to ask a living being for help." The creature explained.
"How?" The Mirror mage rubbed the back of his neck, feeling stupid.
"Just think of the person and what you want to tell them. Remember to wait for them to appear in your head." The being disappeared, allowing Varian to contact someone.
The mage started to think,'Rain,' he waited for a picture to pop up,'Help me, some weird particles or something are eating me up. I have severe magic deficiency disorder.'
Erza and Lucy looked around the area, spotting a couple trees and some flowers. Lucy leaned down on the dirt path, near the edge, and brushed her hand through the grass. It was a lush green with few flowers sprouting every few feet. "This place looks nice," Lucy commented.
"Seems so," Erza said as she walked down the dirt path, some rocks littering the pathway. There were two small villages at the bottom of the hill, where Erza and Lucy could take shelter.
"This place is lively." Lucy smiled as she stood back up. "Let's take shelter and make a plan. We need to find out exactly where we are and how to get to the main part of the kingdom."
"We need to find the others and Mystogan," Erza stated seriously. She was in no joking mood. "Let's get going."
Rain's head started to throb, a pain shooting through her body. "A-Ah!" She screamed, attracting the attention of the three people in the room. Jellal slapped his hand over her mouth hurriedly.
"What's wrong?" He whispered furiously, but she couldn't hear him. She could only hear Varian whispering to her.
"Jellal, Rain..." Gray whispered back, pointing to the figure as it moved towards them.
"Oh no."
