prologue

"What do we do with it?" A girl with shoulder-length pink hair and chestnut brown eyes said. She wore a plain black tank top and olive green cargo pants with a white scarf loosely wrapped around her neck. Nashi was her name.

"She's not an 'it.' She's a little girl, Flame Brain." A raven-haired boy responded. He didn't have a shirt on but thankfully his jean shorts were still there. His name was Storm.

Currently the two teens were staring at a little girl who had obliviously followed them. One thing was obvious though...both of them had no idea what to do.

"What do little girls do?" Storm asked Nashi. The little girl proceeded to walk closer to him causing Storm to back away. It was as if the kid was a disease.

"How am I supposed to know?" Nashi answered, trying her best to avoid contact with the girl as well.

"I'm pretty sure you were a little girl, once. You should know." Storm retorted harshly. Before he knew it the little girl had clutched tightly on his shin. Storm gasped in shock and frantically tried to shake the little girl off.

Nashi covered her mouth stifling her laughter. "You look like such a loser." Storm shot her a glare.

"Do something." He growled looking down at the toddler. A click sound was heard and a flash was triggered. Storm looked up to Nashi who had her lacrima phone pointed at him.

"I'm totally showing this to Gale when we get back to the guild. Your face is just priceless! I'm calling it 'The Failure that is Storm Fullbuster'" Nashi chuckled tucking away her phone.

"I'm going to murder you after this!" Storm snarled. Nashi just rolled her eyes before proceeding closer to the little girl.

"Umm... what's your name?" She asked gently. The little girl looked at her with curious eyes. She slowly loosened her grip on Storm allowing him freedom from her gorilla grip.

"My name is Avery." The little girl said with big puppy dog eyes. Nashi felt her heart melt and her irises turn into the shape of hearts. Storm crouched down to Avery's height.

"Where's your mommy and daddy huh, Avery?" Storm said meeting her gaze. Avery just stared him, tilting her head slightly.

"Where's your shirt?" She asked back causing Storm to jump in shock.

Nashi laughed out loud clutching on her stomach. "That's one of the world's many unanswered questions, Avery."

"Shut it, Flame Brain!"

"Don't call me that Ice Princess!"

"Flame Brain!"

"Droopy face!"

"Pyro!"

"Stripper!"

Avery's head kept turning back and forth as if she was watching a tennis match as both teens through ridiculous insults at each other.

"What, in Mavis's name, are you two idiots doing?!" A voiced yelled. Avery frowned covering her ears. Both Storm and Nashi froze.

A maroon haired boy stood there. He wore a black hooded trench coat and a white shirt underneath with black pants tucked under his leather boots. He had a noticeable scar running from just under his right eye to the middle of his neck.

"Hunter! So good to see you..." Nashi stammered, sweat dropping from her forehead.

"Me and Nashi were just having a FRIENDLY quarrel!" Storm stuttered with a nervous chuckle, his body shaking in fear.

Hunter looked down to Avery who stared up at him. "Who's this?" He picked up Avery and held her at his eye-level.

"Where'd you get that scar, Mister?" She asked ever so sweetly. Hunter bit his lip and looked away. He sighed.

"I ran away from my parents and followed strangers." He answered with a serious face. Avery looked shocked.

"It was an accident! I promise I won't do it again!" Avery cried. Hunter smirked and put her down on the ground. He patted her head causing the girl to giggle.

"Who knew he was good with kids?" Storm muttered.

"Nashi, Storm, take the girl and retract your steps for today. You'll find her parents that way." Hunter ordered. Storm and Nashi responded like soldiers and nodded attentively. "Good. After that we'll return to the guild."

"YES! I can't wait to show Gale that picture!" Nashi cheered causing Storm to growl in anger. She picked up Avery in her arms and then her and Storm left. Hunter was by himself.

Where'd you get that scar, Mister?

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before looking up to the sky. What he had told the girl was far from the truth...

Crimson liquid dripped from his cheek furiously. The loss of blood made his vision hazy.

"That wound looks terrible, Hunter. It's a shame Aunt Wendy isn't here to heal it." A girl sneered, his blood dripping from her fingertips. She had the look of pure malice in her eyes.

"You've gone too far, this time. You've caused so much pain to people who love you. You let the monster control you."

Hunter shook his head, pushing those dark thoughts away. It had been 2 years since he received his infamous scar, it was a part of him and his past now. He sighed deeply. He really couldn't wait to home again.
