37. The Fortune Teller
Storm sat at the back of the guildhall in his lonesome. His back was up against the wooden wall as he sat on the hard gravel ground. The outside was peaceful; wind blew softly on his face and he was well away from the loud guild members. He needed time alone. After what he had just done to Quinn, he felt - to put it short - really shitty.
The feelings of dread and disgust filled every inch of his being, hovering heavily around his conscience making it impossible to ignore his undeniable guilt. Raking his hand through his raven coloured hair, Storm closed his eyes letting out a sigh.
"What the hell did I just do?" He muttered to himself.
"I think I might be in love with you, Storm Fullbuster." Quinn whispered.
Just like that, it seemed as if Storm's blood ran cold. He froze in his spot, eyes widening in surprise. Quinn closed her eyes in embarrassment, her cheeks reddening to the colour of Hunter's hair. She leaned in...
Without a second thought, Storm stepped back pushing the girl away as well. Quinn opened her eyes confused.
"What do you mean?" He said, his voice oddly oozing with desperation.
Quinn frowned, her brows knitted, as she narrowed her eyes at the boy. "I think I made it pretty clear. It was hard saying it out loud so don't tell me to repeat it." She said, her frustration growing.
"Well..." Storm searched for something to say in his mind. Fear invaded his mind and his palms were dripping with sweat. He didn't feel right and he didn't know why. All Storm knew in that moment was that he was scared. And rather than take the leap of faith and perhaps see where the future would take him with Quinn, he blurted out his stupid response. "I've never felt that way about you. You were nothing but a fling to me... Besides we're better just friends."
Quinn was taken back, her eyes beginning to glisten. She swallowed the lump in her throat. Storm felt horrible and was ready for her to slap him in the face or do something in retaliation... but instead all the girl did was turn and walk away.
He didn't chase her.
Storm sighed once again. He had ruined the relationship that he had with Quinn and it'd be by some miracle that he'd be able to salvage any of it. He clenched his fists.
"Why am I so stupid sometimes?"
___________
[The Next Day]
Location: Kidada Bar, Western Fiore...
Sitting in a bar surrounded with alcohol and rowdy customers always reminded Jace of Fairy Tail. As the good and the not-so good memories of his childhood flooded his mind, a smile formed across his lips. Slumped down in his chair, he had his hands tucked behind his head and eyes closed as he hummed himself a tune. He was comfortable and if he wasn't on a mission right now, he would have happily taken a nap right there and then.
"Don't you dare go to sleep Jace or I'll kick your ass." His father hissed through the earpiece causing Jace to wince slightly. His comfort had been interrupted.
"Yeah, yeah I know..." Jace grumbled. "Don't get your panties in a knot, dad." He added with an cheeky smirk.
"Shut it and focus." His father ordered back. "The target in coming in 3... 2... 1..."
Jace heard the door of the bar open before closing once again. What followed was the immediate hollering of the male customers which were lined up at the bar. Instinctively, Jace straightened up curious to know what all the fuss was about. Upon seeing his target, his eyes widened.
A woman with long curly brown hair and emerald green eyes that seemed to twinkle in the light, walked towards him. She walked with confidence; Her hips swaying from side to side as she sashayed his way. Her slender figure was perfectly framed with the tight black dress that showed more of her chest than necessary. She stopped in front of him and Jace looked at her up and down.
He felt drawn to her and he couldn't help it. She was gorgeous. Something in him made him want to make her his. Burying that feeling deep under, he kept a calm and nonchalant composure.
"Well, aren't you a strong one. Normally boys would be dropping on the ground worshipping me by now." The woman said clearly amused as she slid out a chair from under the table and seated herself.
"You're not my type unfortunately." Jace said causally, shrugging. She certainly wasn't but that didn't stop his need for this woman to grow stronger. It was as if he couldn't control his own feelings and emotions.
The woman chuckled and looked Jace straight in the eyes. Her emerald eyes seemed to be glowing now as she smiled devilishly at him. "Oh honey..." She leaned forward and got so close to Jace that he could feel her breath on his ear. "I'm everyone's type." She whispered.
___________
"Achoo!" Alexis sneezed. Rubbing her nose, she pouted.
"You're not getting sick are you?" Nashi asked the blonde haired girl. "If you are, I happen to know how to cure a cold!" She declared proudly pointing her thumb to her chest.
Storm rolled his eyes. "You looking after Luna for one afternoon does not make you an expert on sicknesses, Flame Brain." He droned out monotonously.
"Oh shut it, Ice Princess!" Nashi barked at him angrily. Gale, who was beside her, restrained her in her seat by holing her down.
Gale let out a growl in frustration. To his surprise, instead of instigating the fight as usual, Storm remained silent looking off into the distance. This caused the iron dragon slayer to frown. He really needed to ask Storm about why Quinn was crying. Storm had been acting weird ever since then.
"I don't think I'm getting sick but I do feel... like fighting someone right now." Alexis frowned as she thought long and hard on it. "Eh, Maybe it's just nothing." She shrugged.
"If you want, me and you could fight!" Nashi said bouncing with excitement. "Cmon Alexis it would be fun."
Alexis adamantly shook her head as she laughed. "No, I don't think that'd be a good idea, Nashi." She said. Fiddling with her fingers and looking to the side with a shaky grin, Alexis continued. "Besides, you're certainly in a different league than me. I don't think I'd be much of a challenge for you."
"Don't down play yourself, Lexi. Cmon, it'd be good practice." Nashi added with a pout.
"You really think that you fighting Alexis is a good idea, Nashi?" Gale asked narrowing his eyes at the pink haired girl. To him, it seemed like she was digging her own grave.
"Of course it's a good idea! I'm helping Alexis practice more before she goes on missions with us!" Nashi proclaimed. Most of that was true but there was a tiny part of Nashi that wanted to beat up Alexis at least once in her life.
Gale frowned at the pink haired girl. "Whatever you say." He mumbled averting his eyes elsewhere.
"I'm sorry, Nashi. But I don't really feel up to it today." Alexis subtly interjected. She suddenly perked up with an ecstatic smile. "Next time for sure!"
Nashi slumped into her seat, arms crossed like a pouting child. "Tch... fine but I'm holding to that." She declared. Alexis nodded, her usual innocent smile spread across her lips.
"Avoiding fighting your friends? Now that's no fun." Lucifer mused laughing to himself. He stood tall behind Nashi with a devilish smirk. "Could it be that you don't want to hurt them, little demon?"
Alexis' smile didn't falter one bit as she tuned into the new conversation that had started amongst that the four teens, ignoring the demon.
"I wonder..." Lucifer grinned as he reached down and started to stroke at Nashi's pink locks of hair. Of course, Nashi was oblivious to this. The smile faded from Alexis' face. "How long will your little pretentious act last?"
Alexis stood to her feet in an instant. "I just remembered that I promised to help my dad with filing some of the guild's damage reports. There is a lot of them, unfortunately." She said with a sigh.
"I'm sure Gramps can handle those himself. We were just about to go find Hunter and Ultear." Gale suggested, urging the girl to stay with the group.
Alexis simply shook her head. "No, I better help him before his hair falls out. You guys go out and have some fun." She said. "You know I heard that there's this crazy accurate fortune teller in town, maybe you guys should check him out."
Nashi suddenly jumped, surging with excitement. "We have to go!" She squealed. From the time she was in diapers, Nashi had always had a liking towards finding out what the future holds for her and never failed to miss reading her horoscopes.
"That's the spirit, Nashi!" Alexis cheered clapping her hands. She then turned Storm who she had noticed hadn't been in the happiest moods as of lately. "And you cheer up, Mister. Whatever's wrong with you right now will work itself out, okay? There's no use in moping around about it."
"Okay..." Storm mumbled covering the pink tint in his cheeks that had appeared.
"Good." And with that Alexis bid them farewell and disappeared into the guild master's office.
"Cmon guys, let's find Hunter and Ultear and go to this fortune teller!" Nashi demanded basically emanating with excitement and shaking Gale's arm rather violently.
"Please don't be annoying." Gale growled prying the girl from his poor arm.
"Unfortunately for Flame Brain, that's impossible." Storm said with a smirk.
Nashi glared at Storm. "I'm going to kill you!" She jumped across the table and attacked the ice make mage. Trying to strangle him with her bare hands, Nashi let out a series of growls as she fought off Storm's many attempts at trying to shove her off of him.
"Psy...Psycho." Storm choked out.
All Gale do was sigh as he watched the two fight; that and finish up his drink. "What a bunch of idiots." He said as he shook his head. Little did he know, three certain little girls had assembled right beside him.
One of them cleared his throat catching his attention. Gale turned and saw Rose, Layla and Luna standing there with looks of determination on their faces.
"What can I do for you ladies?" Gale asked taking another swig of his drinks.
"We heard something about a fortune teller." Rose stated with hands on hips. Layla and Luna nodded eagerly beside her.
___________
"Thanks for hanging out with me today, Hunter." Ultear said smiling widely at the red haired boy. "I really needed that break from the guild and everyone." She continued. After the whole time travelling ordeal with Alexis, Ultear needed a little time to herself... well, herself and Hunter. She felt somewhat at ease when he was with her.
"What happened must've taken a lot out of you." Hunter said as he continued to walk down the cobblestone path with his hands in his pockets in front of her. "I wish I was there with you though to ease some of the stress." He admitted sighing to himself.
Ultear couldn't help smile to herself as she looked down to the ground. "Y-You know Hunter..."
Hunter stopped in his tracks and turned to face the girl. Raising his eyebrow, he gazed at the raven haired girl in anticipation. "What is it?" He asked.
Ultear's cheeks were burning, her heart pounding loudly in her chest. "Well, I was wondering if-"
Before Ultear could finish, Hunter was tackled by a red headed body. It turned out to be Rose who hugged her brother with a wide grin.
"Ha! I won!" She rejoiced thrusting her fist into the air.
Following in her stead was a very tired Nashi who was huffing and puffing for air. "That was no fair. You used Layla and Luna to distract me!" The pink haired girl barked at Rose who cleverly hid behind Hunter.
"There were no such rules established which prohibited my use of them." Rose stated smugly before poking her tongue at Nashi. Nashi fumed, steam coming from her ears.
"Did you seriously race my little sister, Nashi?" Hunter questioned with a frown.
"Yes she did and she failed miserably." Storm called out as he and Gale approached. Both boys had one of the twins perched up on their shoulders.
"Sorry, Nashi, but I have to agree with Stormie here." Layla agreed from atop the raven haired boy's shoulders. She then proceeded to high-five him.
"You know you could've at least put more effort into the race." Luna added. "If Luke were here, he would've won." She stated matter of factly.
"Hey! I would've beaten Luke if he were here. As a matter of fact, I would've destroyed him!" Rose argued, her red magical aura suddenly intensifying as she pointed her sword at Luna. "Him and stupid Raiden as well!"
Luna paled. "Gale, save me!" She squealed hugging onto his head.
"Gah!" Gale growled as Luna basically strangled him for protection. "Luna, stop! She ain't gonna hurt you."
"Cmon on now. Put away the sword, Rose." Hunter insisted.
Rose pouted and obeyed her brother, the sword disappearing into thin air and her magical aura fading. "Fine." At this, Luna instantly calmed and stopped strangling Gale.
"What are you guys doing here by the way?" Ultear questioned as she looked at the odd bunch. "You guys babysitting or something?"
"Excuse me, we're not babies, Ultear!" Layla interrupted furrowing her brow.
"We heard that there's some fortune teller is in town and we're gonna check him out." Nashi announced with bouncing excitement. "They just decided to tag along." She added as an afterthought gesturing to Rose, Layla and Luna.
"Is that so..." Hunter asked, rubbing his chin.
"Please please please, can you come?" Rose begged pulling at Hunter's shirt. "It's gonna be fun but interesting as well!"
The red haired boy shrugged as he patted his sister's head. "I don't see why I shouldn't." He agreed. He looked to Ultear. "How about it, Ul?" He asked.
"Of course, I'll come." Ultear answered.
___________
"This..." Ultear started, scratching her head. "... is the fortune teller?" She said with a deepened frown.
"You know I didn't know what to expect but I thought it would be more than this." Hunter admitted. He looked at Rose, who also seemed a little disappointed at the looks of the place.
"Aw boo... this place is ugly." Layla pouted.
All of the Fairy Tail kids stood in front of a pretty raggedy looking tent made out of a series of dirtied sheets. Written on a cardboard sign with horrible handwriting were the words 'Fortune Teller, 3000 Jewel per reading' in black marker pen.
"3000 Jewel per reading? That's a bit much for a place so shi-" Gale cleared his throat. "I mean, bad looking." He corrected himself. He decided not to use profanity in front of the oblivious girls in front of him. "What a rip off. Who would be so stupid to pay for tha-"
"Okay! I paid for everyone to have a turn!" Nashi yelled excitedly handing out everyone tickets.
"Should've seen that coming, Metal Face." Storm snickered. The iron dragon slayer just glared at him in response.
"I'm going first!" Nashi declared before quickly disappearing into the shady looking tent.
___________
Nashi stepped into the fortune teller's tent beaming with enthusiasm. She sat in front of the fortune teller. He had a long grey and rough looking beard and a very bald head; his robes looked rather torn.
"Give me your palm" When he spoke Nashi could see his yellow stained teeth. It was obvious that this man wasn't fond of personal hygiene. She held out her palm and the man started to examine it.
"Hm interesting..." The man said running his finger over the lines of Nashi's palms.
"What do you see? Me winning the next S Class trials?" Nashi asked with a grin.
"In your future, I see a battle." The fortune teller said narrowing his eyes at her palm. His eyes suddenly widened. "An awesome battle between good and evil. A battle which determines the very balance of peace in all of Earth Land!" He yelled gripping onto Nashi's wrist rather tightly. "You have to choose your own path but beware for there is a blurred line between what is right and what is not!"
"Um... okay." Nashi said indifferently. "What about the S Class trials though? Do I win it or...?"
The fortune teller was at a loss for words. Had the pink haired girl really just ignored everything he had said? He shook his head. "NEXT!" He called out.
___________
Hunter entered next with his signature stoic look spread across his face. He didn't really believe in fortune tellers but his sister was excited so he had decided to tag along.
"In your future, there is a conflict between who you are and who you want to be. You're strong, there isn't a doubt about that. But like glass, you will shatter. And when that happens, young man, you must accept the help in which you need." The fortune teller revealed.
Much like Nashi had reacted, Hunter was indifferent. "Look here, Fortune Teller, my little sister is coming in next and you better give her the best future you can give." Using the glare he had inherited from his mother as he talked, Hunter scared the living lights out of the old man.
"N-N-Next!" The fortune teller shrieked.
___________
"Umm... Greetings." Rose squeaked shyly as she entered the tent.
The fortune teller smiled shakily and took the little girl's hand. "In your future, I see great struggles with your abilities but in time you are able to surpass them and unlock your true potential." He revealed.
Rose basically lit up with joy, her face going kawaii. "Really?! Thank you, Mr Fortune Teller Sir!"
As soon as Rose left the tent, the fortune teller breathed out easily. "Thank god, I don't have to deal with her frightening brother." He patted the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief.
"Next!"
___________
"I guess I'll go." Storm said.
"In your future, I see a man of darkness fighting for all that good against a tyrant of light. You must bridge the alliance using the most powerful force in all of Earthland."
Storm stared blankly at the man. "What does that even mean? All I heard was a bunch of words."
"That is all for today, thank you for the 3000 jewel" The fortune teller flashed a smile before he shoved Storm out. "Next please!"
___________
Ultear walked in the tent very sceptical. But there was one thing she had in her mind that she hoped the fortune teller could help her with.
"In your future, I see trouble with alcohol and men." The man simply stated.
Ultear frowned. "That's it?" The Fortune Teller nodded. "3000 Jewel is worth more than what you just said, old man!"
"I'm sorry but its only one reading per 3000 jewel, if you would like to get another one, that would be another 3000."
"CROOK!"
___________
"Get in there, Metal Face. If we did it, so you have to" Storm pushed Gale into the tent where he sat down. "Come out and I'll get Hunter to stab you." Gale rolled his eyes with annoyance. He didn't sign up for this.
"In your future, you must make a choice which will ultimately determine the outcome of one of your friends' lives. Choose wisely, son, or stay in the shadows." The fortune teller said,Gale narrowed his eyes at him.
"I know, you're a load of crap, old man." Gale hissed. The fortune teller merely shrugged and laughed.
"You're the one that paid"
___________
Next was Layla who walked in with her usual aura of confidence.
"In your future, I see that with your beauty, many will fall for you and fall hard. In fact, you're quite the heart breaker. But beware, little miss, for one day you may break the heart in which you desire the most."
Layla frowned. "That's mean though... I would never break someone's heart!" She yelled stomping her feet. "You're a liar!" And with that, the little girl stormed out.
___________
Luna, much like her sister, walked in with confidence. Like two peas in a pod, they were very similar. Planting her butt on the seat across from the fortune teller, she held onto her hand.
"This is peculiar... I do not see anything."
"Maybe that's because I see yours." She said with a nonchalant shrug.
The man raised his eyebrow. "W-What do you mean?"
"In your future, I see vultures and death." Luna droned out with no ounce of emotion in her voice.
The man paled, completely horrified by the words of the little girl. "G-GET OUT!" He screamed.
___________
"That old geezer seemed really spooked, Luna. What'd you do to him?" Nashi asked her little sister who merely shrugged.
"Just told him the truth but it seems he didn't really handle it well." She answered simply. "What did he say to you guys?" She questioned everyone.
"He said I'll get better at my magic!" Rose cheered happily. Hunter smiled down at her, he was glad the old man didn't say anything stupid.
"He said I'd be a heart breaker. which is totally mean. I would never!" Layla seethed. Luna who was next to her sister patted her on the back trying to calm the angry girl.
"He said something about shattered glass for mine." Hunter added.
"He said something about alcohol and men to me which makes no sense at all." Ultear growled, crossing her arms. She was still miffed that her fortune was boring.
"If I'm being honest, I don't even know what he said to me." Gale admitted. Nashi and Storm seemed to also agree to this. "Luckily, it's all a big pile of shi- I mean lies."
"You know what, I think we all deserve ice cream after that disappointment." Hunter suggested which instantly made Layla, Luna and Rose perk up.
"YES! YES! YES!" They squealed.
So as the sun set upon Magnolia that day, the kids of Fairy Tail were filled with joy. They were at peace... unaware of the upcoming danger they'd soon have to encounter.
___________
Meanwhile...
"Where the hell did he go?!" Erik yelled throwing a chair at the wall.
Sorano growled under her breath clenching her fists by her side. "Calm down, Erik. Where ever Jace is, he'll be fine! He's not a goddam child anymore!" She shouted, the vein pulsing in her neck.
"Tell me to calm down... One. More. Time." Erik seethed glaring daggers at the woman.
Jellal burst into the room, Meredy in his stead. "What's the problem, you two?"
Sorano breathed out closing her eyes as she calmed herself down. "We can't track him. The ear piece is dead and the body tracker we usually have on every member of this guild isn't working. We have no idea where he is and the last we heard from him, he was off with the target."
"He's gone, Jellal." Erik hissed. "Jace is gone."
