ten - the bond of best friends

Bianca Groh was a simple girl.

Her parents were the owners of a profitable pub downtown and because of that she lived a comfortable simple life. However, she wasn't a loud party goer like her parents. Instead, Bianca was a quiet reserved rather soft-spoken young woman.

Oddly enough, she had a best friend with a completely different personality.

As Bianca and her best friend Erika walked down the hall, they talked about a certain red haired boy.

"I just don't see what's so great about Hunter." Erika said. "He's only the son of two famous magic fighters, champion magic fighter himself, attractive but also mysterious, the most wanted boy in school... oh I guess I do see it."

Bianca chuckled to herself. "He's more than that you know." She fiddled with her fingers as her cheeks reddened. "He's kind, charming and a great listener when he wants to be. One night we talked for hou-"

Erika gagged. "Don't get all soppy on me, B. You know I hate that stuff."

"Oh come on, Erika, I'm sure you know what it feels like to have a crush." Bianca said, curious eyes peering at her friend.

Erika shook her head adamantly. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Perhaps Gale? You seem to have a weird interest in the poor g-"

"No, Bianca." Erika suddenly snapped causing her best friend to jump slightly in fright. Erika bit her lip and then her weary eyes looked straight into the brunette's eyes. "He's not my type." She simply said.

"Oh okay..." With a deep breath, she regathered her senses hugging her books close to her chest with an embarrassed grin. "Well, I've just had a crush on Hunter for so long that I'm a little excited things might... you know... go further finally."

Erika looked at the lovestruck brunette with the frown. Sighing deeply, she decided to change the subject. "Did I tell you my stupid big brother's coming back to town next week?"

Bianca's face lit up. "Jace is coming back! That's so cool, it's been ages since I last saw him."

"Two years I was rid of that boob and he just suddenly reappears." Erika hissed.

Bianca laughed as she nudged her friend softly. "Oh whatever, I know you missed him."

Erika made a face at this. "Do you know the trail of broken hearts he left? And how many of them came crying to me expecting some sort of help? It was a nightmare."

"I forgot about that." Bianca said, slightly frowning. "He did get around a lot."

"Yeah, he was even invited to help with magic league team." Erika rolled her eyes throwing her arms up in frustration. "I just wish that-"

"Look, there's Hunter." Bianca interrupted as she spotted the boy at his locker while talking to Alexis. "I should go say hi."

Erika groaned. "Don't g-"

Unfortunately, it was too late. Bianca was already off to talk to her crush leaving her poor best friend on her lonesome. Reluctantly, Erika followed behind with a scowl.

"Approaching me at random times of the day is gonna start rumours." Hunter said to Alexis as he stacked his books into his locker.

"Oh please, it's been a month already, no one knows." Alexis dismissed, waving her hand. "It's a magic league thing anyways. We're heading for Lamia Scale next while Gale fights here." She informed him. "They're pretty rowdy considering they were able to beat Rose in the practice round."

"And that means they'll be bragging to our faces right?" Hunter grunted, feeling annoyed.

Alexis nodded. "I'm telling you, if one of them starts badmouthing Rose, I'm going to-"

"Hi Hunter." Bianca greeted. She looked at him with a wide smile and turned to Alexis. "Hi Alexis."

"Oh hey." Hunter said, with grin that made the brunette inwardly swoon.

Alexis' eyed Hunter carefully and for a moment she was silent. She then took a deep breath and turned back to Bianca. "Hey Bianca." The blonde replied, smiling politely now. "I feel like it's been too long."

Bianca nodded, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she nervously chuckled.

The two girls used to go to the same middle school together. Although, Bianca didn't know Alexis all that well, she knew that the blonde was one of the nicest people in the whole school.

"I hear you're still fending off Justin." Bianca joked, scratching the back of her head.

Alexis sighed, rubbing at her temples. "Ah yes, please don't remind me."

Hunter frowned. "How long has he-"

"Hey Red and Blondie." Erika popped out from behind Bianca. "Got any juicy secrets for me?"

Hunter rolled his eyes at the girl's entrance. "Gale's not here so why are you?"

"Just making sure you safely walk my best friend to your English class that you have next." Erika said placing her hands on Bianca's shoulders.

Bianca gasped, her cheeks reddened. "Erika!" She scolded. She turned back to Hunter adorning a smile. "You really don't have to-"

"Oh come on Hunter, just do it." Erika urged. "Cmon Blondie, help me out here."

Alexis twirled with the ends of her hair, her smile looking more forced now. "Hunter can do whatever he's wants." She said.

Hunter caught the odd change in tone in her voice and raised a brow. It almost sounded like she was challenging him. It seemed that this subtle change also caught the attention of Erika who was narrowing her eyes at the blonde.

Alexis continued. "Although it would be un-gentleman-like if you didn't take Bianca so you better make the right decision, Mister." She let out her signature giggle. "That reminds me though, I have to find Rose before class starts. Bye guys."

"Bye Alexis." Bianca waved with a soft smile.

Hunter frowned at the departing girl. Something was definitely wrong with her and he'd have to find out later.

"Well, you heard the Blondie. Be a gentleman." Erika insisted, her arms crossed over chest.

The bell rang right when Hunter swiftly shut his locker. "We should get going to class, Bianca."

"You want to walk with me?" Bianca squeaked.

"This may come as a surprise but you're one of the few people I'm willing to talk to." He said giving a reassuring smile to the brunette. The smile faded when he looked at Erika. "You're definitely not one of them."

Erika scoffed. "As if I'd care."

"I'll see you at lunch, Erika." Bianca said. "Please don't cause too much trouble."

Erika rolled her eyes. "Yeah yeah I get it." She turned around. "See you later." With that, the girl walked away from the two.

"You and Erika are an interesting pair." Hunter pointed out.

"She's a sweetheart once you get to know her." Bianca told him with a shy smile.

"I'll take your word for it."

The two started walking to their class, side by side. Bianca ignored the glares she received from girls that she and Hunter passed as they made their way down the corridors.

She'd most likely get mobbed after school for being too close with Fairy Tail High's most eligible bachelor.

Now that Bianca thought about it, Alexis was the only girl that was never attacked for being close to Hunter. But there was a reason for that. After all, all girls know to never go after your best friend's brother.

Pushing the thoughts to the back of her mind, Bianca let out a quick breath. She should enjoy this time while it lasted. She didn't know the next time she'd ever be alone with Hunter, of course.

"I think it's about time you told me the truth, Alexis." Rose demanded.

Alexis snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her best friend. Her heart was beating fast as Rose stared at her. "The truth about what exactly?" The words fell out of her mouth easily as she kept up her aura of innocence.

"Tell me who the boy is." Rose simply said as she turned her chair to face Alexis properly.

Alexis put her head face down on her desk. "There isn't a boy. Leave me alone."

"Oh, you don't like when people pry into your love life. How ironic." Rose said while poking Alexis' head with a pencil.

"That's different. You and Gale would totally be cute." Alexis muffled voice complained. The comment made Rose frown but that didn't stop the heat from rising to her cheeks.

Rose shook her head, trying to focus on her original objective. "Just tell me what it is, Lexi, I know something's bothering you."

Alexis breathed in deeply. Of course, she couldn't tell Rose about Hunter but at the moment, she was frustrated and the only way she could alleviate that was to talk it out.

"I am neither confirming or denying that there's a boy." Alexis said sitting up. She fiddled with the ends of her hair, something she always did when she was feeling anxious.

Rose rolled her eyes. "So there is one, got it."

Alexis glared at the red-haired girl before sighing. "It's just that there's another girl and it's so obvious that she has a crush on him and I don't think he knows but I also think he likes her as well and I'm just... I'm-"

"You're jealous." Rose finished. "I knew it."

Alexis arched her brow in curiosity. "You knew it? How could you-"

"There isn't much that phases you. The only things that seem to bother you are insects," Alexis cringed when Rose said that horrific word, "and boys. And today I couldn't help but notice you looking miserable. As far as I know, there aren't any insects around us and..." Rose took particular care in saying her next words, staring at Alexis cautiously. "The last time I saw you like that was when you were involved with-"

Alexis put her face in her hands making a groaning noise. "Don't you dare say that name."

"Whoever this new person is, stop thinking he'll be exactly like the last one." Rose advised. "Just trust him. Knowing you, he's probably a great guy since you managed to say yes to him."

Alexis breathed in. "Okay, you're exactly right. I should trust him."

Rose smiled. "So are you going to tell me who he is?"

Alexis felt her stomach turn. She felt disgusting for lying to her best friend like this and yet, she couldn't stop. "I'll tell when I think it's serious. It's only been a little while."

Alexis thanked Mavis when Rose didn't pry. Instead, the red haired girl simply nodded. "In celebration, we should get some strawberry cake."

The blonde frowned. "But strawberry cake is your favourite, not mine."

"I meant in celebration of my fantastic ability in giving advice." Rose corrected matter of factly.  "Not your new relationship."

Alexis blinked before laughter bubbled up inside her.

Afterwards when the two left to get that strawberry cake, the blonde couldn't help but think about what the future had in store. If Rose ever found out about Hunter, Alexis knew she'd would be completely shattered.

What a horrible friend, she was.
