“Hey, Lucy!”

The said Celestial Mage jumped, her name being called a surprise. Not in a while had she been snuck up on like so, and Lucy Heartfilia was beginning to let her guard down since she hadn’t been worried of being frightened. However, her name being called so abruptly had interrupted her deep concentration, which in turn had startled her. It didn’t help when a certain pink-haired dragon slayer and his itch of a companion peeked in through her window, the source of the voice.

Natsu.

The blonde sighed. “Nani? I told you I didn’t want to go on a mission today since I’m not feeling well.”

Natsu grinned at her, jumping over her pink bedspread and landing on her carpet with a soft thud. Before she could antagonize him on that, he speed-walked over to her, pressing his hands into her cheeks and making her lips pucker.

E-Eh?” Lucy questioned, her face heating up at the slightest touch from her dense friend.

She blinked, once. Twice. Three times. Natsu just continued to stare at her. His smile was wide, shining, and happy just as it was every time it appeared on his face. Lucy’s recent revelation in the raid of dragons during the Grand Magic Games had put her into a tough spot. Yes, she liked Natsu—“liked liked”, no doubt. And the fact that he was too close was making her heart race, and she jerked back out of her chair in startlement.

“W-What the…?!” Lucy began, not knowing what in the hell her partner was trying to do. If she didn’t know better, she’d think he was trying to make her have a heart attack!

“Did it work, Nat-zu?” Happy meowed in question, his voice a loud whisper over the dragon slayer’s shoulder.

“Did what work?!” the celestial mage cried, jumping to her feet with steam coming out of her ears. “You don’t just get that close to people, you baka! You ever heard of ‘personal space’?! The nerve of you two!”

Natsu snickered, but Lucy must’ve been imagining the tint in the color of his cheeks. “We came to ask you something, Luce!”

The blonde held back a loud sigh, knowing the dense male had just changed the subject completely around. And she knew, if she tried to ask him about that little...action just a second ago, he’d just continue to act like an idiot. How’d she come to have feelings for such a dense idiot, anyways? After all, he was stubborn, an annoyance to her personal space, and got into fights for no apparent reasons whatsoever! Oh, and don’t even get her started on the time he barged in while she was changing…!

But you do know why you like him, her mind chastised. You thought about it for hours after the night of the celebration at the castle.

Alas, her mind was right. She had thought about it for hours after the end of the dragons, sitting in bed alone. To be honest, she didn’t really mind Natsu’s barging in; it only meant he was eager to see her. And she loved his smiles; they were always full of life and made her heart skip a beat ever since she met the hot head in Hargeon. When Natsu entered Lucy’s personal space, she felt much warmer, like when he grabbed her a few days ago and pulled her head-first into the water. She hadn’t wanted to be body-slammed into the pool, but she couldn’t help but notice as Natsu’s hands wrapped around her sides, his chest pressed against her lower back.

Lucy abruptly shook her head. She really needed to shut her mind up. This was a dense male, for crying out loud! He protected everyone in the guild and the only special thing to him about her was that they were best friends. He smiled at everyone else, and never once had he even understood what the word “love” meant. Not that Lucy loved him; however, she was pretty close.

Lucy mentally slapped herself—forced herself to listen to Natsu’s words again.

“...stargazing!” he was saying, and Lucy’s attention was caught.

“What did you say?” Lucy asked, forcing her flushed cheeks down to shadow them from Natsu’s eyes.

Both him and Happy blinked, surprised that she hadn’t been paying attention. “I asked if you’ve ever been stargazing!”

Lucy was surprised at this question. “Of...of course I have. Why?”

The dragon slayer suddenly looked excited. “Because I wanted to go with you!”

Lucy felt her heart contract, and she mentally bullied herself for acting so stupidly. She couldn’t help it though; he was close to her face, and he was wearing that stupid open vest again. Couldn’t he ever wear a normal shirt? His body heat did not help the situation, either.

“Why?” she asked, her mind a little slow from staring at her best friend for so long.

Natsu pouted his lower lip, and the celestial mage felt like beating her head against the wall for thinking something so adorable. “You are really slow, aren’t you Luce? I told you, Gray said that there was a meteor shower tonight along with a full moon, and for some reason that’s super rare. I don’t know what a meteor shower is, and when that icicle found out, he teased me and told me if I wanted to know, to see it with you.”

Oh, she was going to kill that ice mage. Setting her up like that was vile!

But she couldn’t deny that stargazing with Natsu would be...nice. Great, even. She’d get the chance to show him the constellations, and see a meteor shower and full moon at the same time for the first time in her life! The thought alone made her excited. How had the ice mage known about this occurring? Lucy was the one obsessed with stars, so how come she hadn’t known? It puzzled her, that thought; but excitement replaced that feeling. She could tell Natsu where all the constellations were, where the forbidden ones resided, and where—

Lucy stopped herself with resentment. What was she thinking? Natsu wasn’t interested in her stuff about stars and stories; he always got bored when she talked to him about it. The thought made her sadden slightly; she’d only bore him if he went with her. It was another thing she noted about how Natsu liking her back was out of the question. Note number one hundred, anyways.

“Why don’t you go with someone else?” Lucy asked, turning back to her desk only to write scribbles.

Natsu’s voice was surprised, and slightly disappointed. “You don’t want to go? I thought you liked stars!”

“I do...” Lucy began, trying to hide the sadness from her face as she continued to scribble on the corner of the parchment in front of her. “...but I’m not feeling well, remember?”

Natsu slammed his hands against her desk, making her jump three feet off her chair. “But you have to go with me! You’re the expert on this stuff!”

“Natsu, I could just tell you what a meteor shower is.”

“Hell no,” he began shaking his head. “Where’s the fun in that??”

Ah, here it was again; that stubbornness to get what he wanted. Lucy found it quite annoying, and it made her snap at him sometimes. Yet right now, she was in a depressed enough mood already and didn’t feel like arguing.

“Fine,” she replied flatly, no enthusiasm in her voice. “When is it?”

Natsu and Happy wooped in victory, but Lucy didn’t take her eyes from her paper.

“It’s tonight!” Happy exclaimed. “Where should we go?”

“The best place to see a meteor shower is at the fields on the side of Magnolia, just outside of the city. There are rolling hills we can sit on, with blankets and such. People stargaze there all the time.” I go all the time too, but alone and without someone interested in stars as much as me.

“Alright!” Both of them exclaimed in unison. “Arigato, Lu-shee!”

Lucy dragged her eyes to them before returning them to her paper, resting her chin in her palm lazily. “Sure...I’ll see you guys later then.”

“Aye sir!” They exclaimed together once more.

The only thing Lucy was looking forward to was seeing the meteor shower. When night came, she was in awe (like always) of all the stars in the sky. Some of them were millions of years old, others already dead. It fascinated the celestial mage, and she could learn about space and the stars for hours without getting bored.

Here at the rolling hills, Lucy spread out a blanket she could spare for this occasion. It was an old one she’d used when she first started her travels, the color of ivory and having a few holes in the cloth. However, it was thick material, and more than satisfying to sit on. Lucy had even brought three pillows for her friends, deciding that Natsu’s dislike for one of her passions wasn’t going to stop her from enjoying this night of falling pieces of space. There were children running around with flashlights, over one hundred people spread out over the fields around. Laughter filled the night, families sitting on blankets or couples laying together and looking at the stars already.

Lucy sighed, looking up at the stars herself, seeking comfort from them.

“Enjoying the night too, huh?”

Lucy looked to her left, a male voice interrupting her thoughts. He was tall, black-haired, green-eyed, and easy on the eyes. Lucy wasn’t sorely attracted to him, but she wasn’t in favor of him either. He was cute; he wore blue pants and a white t-shirt, a black leather jacket over it. This newcomer was smiling at Lucy and she couldn’t help but smile back in greeting.

“It’s very pretty out here,” she agreed, looking up at the stars again. “I love the stars, and couldn’t help but come here tonight.”

The newcomer nodded as if he understood her passion. “I love them too; ever since I was a kid, my father used to tell me facts about the stars and I’d always be so intrigued.”

Lucy felt a twinge of sadness enter her, but she was delighted to know that someone had a mother or father (like Lucy’s mother) whom told the same stories. “Where is your father now?”

The stranger pointed behind him, towards a blanket on a hill a few rises over. “Back that way. I wanted to stretch my legs before the meteor shower.”

“Well, it was nice to—”

“Luce! Luce!”

Lucy let out a loud shriek as Natsu slammed into her, knocking her onto the blanket in the tall grass. The air was knocked out of her lungs, and the stranger took a step back in surprise at the sudden appearance of the dragon slayer. And when Lucy opened her eyes, her heart froze, for the said mage was draped over her, his arms on either side of her head as he sat on her stomach.

“Damn, that one hurt...” he was mumbling, rubbing his forehead. He looked down at her. “Sorry Luce, I lost my footing running down the hill to get here!”

You…!” Lucy pulled herself out from under him, sitting on her legs and hiding her face in both humiliation and embarrassment. Her heart was beating like crazy, and she still felt the weight of Natsu’s presence on her skin from him being so close. What was wrong with her?!

“I think I’m going to go...” the stranger replied, pointing over his shoulder. “It was, uh, nice to meet you...”

Lucy waved hesitantly. “Uhn...you too...”

She looked at Natsu, seeing him smirking for some odd reason at the boy that was walking away. What was he thinking, she wondered?

Lucy noticed something. “Nani...? Where’s Happy?”

The pink-headed male turned his attention back to her, settling down next to the celestial mage. “He’s trying to get Carla to go with him, so he didn’t come.”

Oh. Oh no.

This was so not good; her alone with Natsu? She didn’t think she could take that tonight! Was she hyperventilating? It sure as hell felt like it.

“So when’s it gonna start?!” Natsu asked, practically squirming in his sitting position.

Lucy sighed, leaning back so that all she saw was stars. “Any time, Natsu. Just be patient, would you?”

“Fine...” he mumbled, leaning backwards as well. “...hey Luce?”

“What?”

“Why do your eyes glow?”

What a bizarre question. “What do you mean, ‘why’? I didn’t know my eyes glowed...”

“Well, they do,” he replied, sitting up again and leaning down over her. Lucy’s breath caught. “They glow every time I look at you. It’s like a bunch of stars in your eyes. Is that because you’re a celestial mage? And how come I feel funny when I look at you especially when you’re smiling?”

Lucy couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “I don’t know what you mean...” she was seriously blushing now.

He suddenly took her cheeks in his palms again, just as he did to her back at her apartment that morning. “And how come both our hearts race when I get close to your face?”

Oh every celestial spirit, Lucy’s mind was going haywire.

“Look!” Someone shouted, and Lucy sat up abruptly.

Both Natsu and Lucy made a noise of surprise.

It was only one at first, but then millions of other falling meteors joined the sky like raindrops falling down a window pane. It reminded Lucy of the time she’d fallen from the sky after putting an end to the Infinity Clock, and that only made her heart rate increase more. People cheered and awed at the sight, the sky lighting up like a Christmas tree. The wind blew slightly, and it ruffled Lucy’s hair, her eyes reflecting the stars in the sky like a crystal clear mirror. It was a beautiful sight; one she hadn’t seen since her mother and her had when she was a child. And now, she was able to share this sight with Natsu.

It made her smile.

Taking a chance, Lucy grabbed Natsu’s arm and leaned into his shoulder, his warmth making her stomach do flips. Natsu’s cheeks tinted slightly, and he watched his beautiful partner, the stars reflecting in her eyes again. He grinned, glad she looked so happy, and remembered his little experiment earlier. He’d asked Mira about these weird symptoms he’d been having when he was around Lucy, and she told him he might’ve had feelings for his celestial partner. He had been confused at first, but when he’d put two and two together, he felt his face heat up for one of the rarer times of his life. So, Mira had given him the experiment. If his heart skipped a beat when he got close to Lucy’s face, then he…“liked liked” Lucy, apparently.

And it had. Skipped a beat, he meant.

“Isn’t it beautiful, Natsu?” Lucy asked, full-on smiling at him now.

And so, he loved Lucy Heartfilia.

Natsu smiled. “Ah.”

And he was going to something about it, right?

Lucy started when she felt Natsu grab her wrist. She looked away from the stars above, about to ask her companion what he was doing. But as soon as she opened her mouth, Natsu’s shadowed face closed in, his lips claiming her’s for his own. The blonde’s eyes widened, shock filling her veins like ice water as she was frozen there. But after a few more moments, she closed her eyes, holding back a smile as only the pleasure and emotion remained. And when they pulled apart, the meteor shower had ended.

Thus the stargazing was over.
