Natsu's POV
From where she is lying, her hair falls sprawled out in a blue messy pile atop the dead leaves and muddy ground. My hands shake as I reach down to her. A single tear makes its way down her petite face and she stirs silently. I hold my breath as I shake her fragile shoulders. no reaction. Lucy and Juvia have wandered over to where I am standing with just the same look on their face...worry.
Juvia starts to whisper. "Do you think she's-" "No-" I interrupt slamming my hand across her mouth.
"we would've heard a cannon," Lucy states as a cold breeze brushes past me, sending a shiver up my spine. Everyone looks down on the girl on the ground.
"We can't leave her..." Lucy brushes her hair out of her face and sighs. I bite down on my tongue. Without even contemplating it I reach my arms underneath her body and scoop her off of the ground. Her arms fall subconsciously around my neck and I can feel her heart beat against my back. I grip tightly onto her ankles.
"She isn't that heavy, I can manage. We should try to find camp before anything though..." Lucy nods her head and Juvia stands to the ground. I look up to the sky, the artificial light burns my eyes as I squint it away. I feel so angry looking up, knowing that everyone is seeing me in this state... Cameras are focused on my movement to capture my failure, success and death. It scares me, I feel vulnerable wandering the forest. The audience is knowing what is behind me, whereas I have to turn my head, I let out an exasperated sigh. All I can really think of is that girl in the forest... how innocent she was, in the wrong place at the wrong time. How many times I ponder "what if she was a few steps behind me... what if I let go of the spear...what if she killed me instead." In an act of peril a person does stupid things, we crave safety and our action overcome our hearts... we become different... We surprise ourselves with our capabilities...
"Natsu-" Lucy mumbles. I turn my head around and my eyes meet hers. She stares at the ground red-faced.
"You are thinking about it again aren't you..." My head falls to her words.
"It's okay..." she continues. I feel like snapping back "that it isn't" but this girl shelters me with her kindness, I wouldn't dare hurt someone like her. instead, my eyes start to cry. I feel a warmth piece my train of though when I notice the blonde has her arms wrapped tightly around me. Her head is on my shoulder and her eyes are shut tightly. My heart escalates in my chest and my face burns red.
"Lu-" I start. But she looks up with tears in her eyes. Her wonderful eyes that no artist could put on paper, her adorable chocolate eyes I have come to love. To see them sad tears at my heart... My hand goes to her cheek to wipe away the fallen tears.
"What are you two doing?" Juvia jumps up behind me, nearly causing Wendy to fall to the ground."
"N-nothing!" I look away bashful and embarrassed.
After what feels like hours of walking, we begin to set up camp. Lucy drops the bags to the ground and sits down on a log. I lay Wendy against a nearby rock and I place my jacket over her shivering arms and Juvia starts on the fire.
I try to avoid all eye contact with everyone at dinner. Frog legs again! The fire is radiating a orange glow to everyone's faces as it bears us a sense of warmth. My lips are parched as I feel the need to say something but then I hear a moan from behind me. I snap my head around to notice Wendy has opened her eyes.
"Wendy-chan!" Juvias leaps over me and secures her arms around the bluenette.
"Ju-vi-a?"Wendy says confused. Her eyes tighten with pain before she starts coughing.
"Would you like some water?" Lucy brandishes the plastic container from out of one of the bags. Wendy's eyes light up at the thought.
"Why did you take her and offer your food to her..." She sighs. Juvia and Lucy exchange a look of sympathy.
"I-is it because you feel sorry for her? Or are you going to secretly kill her in her sleep?" I stand up at the thought of her words. My jaw tightens as I yell.
"Just who do you think we are! We took you... because you are our friend!"
"Friend?" Wendy repeats, puzzled. Lucy and Juvias nod their heads in unison.
"She's never had a friend..." Wendy's head falls to the ground.
"She's always alone..." She continues with a sad look on her face.
Juvias walks over to where she is lying and crouches down to her size.
"Well you do now..." Wendy's face is in a state of shock as Juvias wraps her arms around her, as if she has never felt this sort of love before...
"She has friends..." Wendy's begins to smile in surprise.
"But she's the useless girl from district 10, the girl who couldn't do anything right and was extremely clumsy. People were scared to talk to her in case they got the beatings she received.." I begin to question why she is talking in past tense then I realise she has probably accepted the reality of the games. She is talking in past tense because she knows it soon will be, she considers herself dead...she has been driven crazy...
"If it makes you feel any better I too was considered an outsiders... I was the cause of a lot of peoples suffering.",Wendy looks up at me with a look of anger.
"Were you the cause if innocent peoples suffering? Did you get anyine , whimnyountalked to beaten by peacekeepers?"
"No!" My voice escalates. "I killed someone whom everybody needed... I am the cause for peoples deaths..." Wendy holds a face of recognition as in for the first time ever someone understands...
"I-I'm sorry..." The bluenette chimes in. "I-I didn't know..." Although it pains me to smile, I manage to...
"Don't worry about it..."
Juvia abruptly stands up smiling.
"Juvias is happy your okay Wendy." She picks her feet off of the ground and makes her way over to Wendy.
