18. Fun, the year of the Unicorn    

Dear diary,

You must think that the fairies have some strange and different daily routines. My daily routines are very common. What is uncommon about them is the way I do them.

For example, although I have everything that I may ever need in my house, I sometimes choose to do things naturally.

What does that mean?

Although I have a bathroom and running water in my house, I prefer to use some other means to wash up.

It is so much more fulfilling and fun for me to wash my face using the morning dew that hangs on the nearby plants and trees.

One huge drop is enough for me to wash my face completely, and it is so refreshing.

Of course, the drop is only huge to me, since we fairies are fairly small. I guess for humans, that would be just a normal-sized drop.

I love the fact that when I finish washing my face, I can use dew as my mirror. It's much better than the modern devices that I have at my house.

Don't get me wrong, I love them as well, but I guess it is in my fairy nature to be more familiar with the way that connects me with mother nature.

My favorite toothbrush was handmade, by me.

Yes, I know it is a bit strange for someone who has the magic to make anything by hand, but it can be fun.

I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can make something for myself without the use of magic.

The toothbrush is made of corn husk and wood. It is quite good if I dare say so myself.

It is strong enough to clean my teeth perfectly, and yet not too harsh to damage them.

Having seen some human toothbrushes, I am surprised that they have any teeth left.

To me, it seems like torture to brush one's teeth with such a crude material as they use.

Our teeth need something that is both gentle and firm, at the same time, and because of that my toothbrush is just perfect.

I know, I know it doesn't sound magical at all, but what did you think? That we have magically perfect teeth?

Well, sorry to disappoint, but we also have to work for perfection. The same is true for our hair, we have to take care of it, and brush it carefully, to look as perfect as it does.

As for my brush, it is made of wood and it is very handy.

I already told you how I take a bath to relax, but can you guess how I take a shower?

No?

It is very easy to guess, I take a shower when it rains. Just standing in the rain fully clothed is also okay, but I can take my clothes off and take a shower since my house is usually far away, where no one goes.

Also, all my visitors know they have to call ahead, or they might run into my magical wall.

What is a magical wall, you might wonder?

Well, the name says it all. It is a wall made of magic that I usually put around my house and the surrounding area, so I wouldn't be disturbed.

It's like a huge magical bubble that stops anyone from entering unless they were expected. Think of it as the fairy version of a locked door.

Surprisingly, I am one of the rare fairies who use this magical wall. I guess others don't find it necessary to have their privacy.

For me, privacy is essential, since I want to enjoy all the small things without anyone disapproving my every step.

But, I guess, we are all different in what we need, and that is okay. As long as they respect my needs, I will respect theirs.

Anyways, I digress again, sorry. I just wanted to clear things up.

Another thing that you may find interesting is that even the fairies take the taxi or the bus.

Hahaha, well not exactly, but that is just how I like to call them, jokingly.

What I mean is that sometimes fairies ask the hummingbirds to give them a lift, and since they are so fast, I guess they could be compared to a human taxi.

They are very kind and don't mind fairies hitching a ride when they are too tired to fly. Sometimes, when I am tired, but I am not in a hurry, I ask some other animals for a ride on their backs, and they are usually happy to oblige.

Since they are usually not in a hurry, I can compare them to a human notion of a bus.

Finally, one of my favorite ways to move around when I am too tired to fly, and not in a hurry is to ask a tortoise for a ride.

It is the best way to travel if you are interested in sightseeing since it is the slowest ride available to me and to be honest I love it. I can relax and enjoy the view, and chat with the tortoise the whole way to my destination.

It is very fun, but I rarely get a chance to do it since I don't usually have the necessary time. I mean it is a VERY slow ride, but still a very pleasurable one.

Hm, maybe I should take one of those today.
