Chapter 25
"What did you need me so badly for?" Fae asks, ajusting her bag on her shoulder.
"What are you wearing?" He asks, giving her a one over.
"You said inspection." She purses her lips and looks down at herself. Her white blouse like normal, but a pencil skirt. She cant look that weird. Plus inspection means formal wear. Or smart casual. "Does it look bad?"
"You look like a secutary." Ishida scowls.
"So that's a yes?" Fae raises a brow, smirking slightly.
"Captain said he had a big case for us." Ishida stands up from his desk and walks towards the captains office, Fae following behind him.
"The captain? Why? I thought it was an inspection?"
"So did I until a couple minutes ago. Apparently there's a high profile killer on the loose and seeming we've got a high solving rate we have also been assigned to it." Ishida scowls.
"So serial?" Fae raises a brow.
"Probably." Ishida grumbles. "Just get ready for long hours."
Great. Now how am I going to visit Azusa?
"But why us of all people?" Fae asks rhetorically. "I'm sure there's someone with better qualifications and experience than us."
"Captain likes the way we work. Quick and easy. We don't want the whole city finding out so we need to keep it low key. And by no means speak to the public or reporters, we don't want the killer to be tipped." Ishida warns. Fae sighs as she shakes her head.
||| Three Days Later |||
"I need food." Fae grumbles as she types away furiously on her computer. She hears Ishida give out a big sigh and she looks over her computer to the desk in front of her, pursing her lips at Ishida.
"Your lunch break is in five minutes but I'll let you go early. Just get me something too." Ishida grumbles.
"So go home and shower then get food. Thanks Ishida!" Fae calls as she quickly rushes to the car park before he could say anything. She rushes home and has the fastest shower know to her before going to the kitchen.
"Hi Ukyo." Fae waves as she opens up one of the cabinets. Ukyo turns around from what hes doing. Hes cutting up carrots, wearing that cute cat apron.
"Welcome back Fae, are you done with that case?" Ukyo asks.
"No, but I wanted to get something for the presaint so I'll have something to eat whilst I'm there, so I'll be late home. Then I've got to go out and get lunch for my partner and I. But before that I'm going to check on Azusa." Fae laughs as she takes out some pot noddles.
"That's very nice of you. Your sister wanted to go into town today as well." Ukyo notes. "And make sure you eat something proper when you get back." As Ukyo speaks Ema pops up.
"Fifi, you're back!" Ema smiles. Fae nods as she stuffs things into her back.
"I'll drop you off at the hospital." Fae tells her as they approach the elevator together.
"How did you know I'm going into town?" Ema asks.
"Ukyo told me. I'm visiting Azusa then I have to go back to work." Fae grins as she unlocks the car.
"As you're visiting Azusa, can you give him these?" Ema asks as she holds out a blue bag.
"What are they?" Fae asks as she gets in her car.
"Manga's and DVDs." Ema settles into the car.
"Really? He's meant to be resting." Fae laughs lightly, rolling her eyes. "But I'm glad you're helping the family." Ema blushes slightly as Fae continues to drive down the road.
"I went with Yusuke to get the DVDs." Fae grins at this.
"Really now? Just you and him? Sounds like a date." Fae teases and Ema stutters out nonsense. Fae laughs as she pulls into a car park. "I'll see you later." Fae waves as she walks up to the hospital, a bag in hand.
"I have some things for Asahina Azusa. Could you tell me which room he's in?" Fae ask the receptionist. She tells her the room and Fae goes looking for it, only for a nurse to tell her Azusa is on the roof.
"Azusa." Fae calls as she opens up the door.
"Hello, Fae." Azusa greats. "What's that?"
"It's the books and DVDs you asked for. Yusuke and Ema got them for you, I'm just delivering." Fae smiles.
"I see. So where are they?" Azusa asks.
"Ema went to get something from the town, and I have no idea what Yusuke is doing. I've been at work." Fae smiles sheepishly.
"You have a case?" He asks.
"Yeah, but it's a secret." She winks.
"Oh I see." Azusa smiles.
"Was that a work call just now?"
"No, that was Tsubaki."
"Really?"
"You see, Tsubaki's pulling out all the stops."
"For the lead anime role?"
"Rather than copying the nuance that I was going for, he's making the role his own while still recreating what I'd achieved. But because of that, I sometimes get calls out of the blue like I did just then." Azusa shakes his head with a smile.
"That's so like him." Fae chuckles.
"I have new-found appreciation for how talented Tsubaki is. But at the same time, there's another feeling that's growing in me." Fae tilts her head in confusion.
"Another one?" Azusa walks to the railings behind Fae and leans against it.
"I don't want to lose to Tsubaki. I'm not going to lose. And this is the one thing I can't give up on." Azusa turns around and brings Fae into a hug. She freezes, but couldn't help shivering at the warmth he produced. Against her cold skin, his was warm and flushed, making her breath catch. "I'm not going to apologise anymore. Because I love you more than anyone else." He moves back and kisses her forehead. "There's no hurry, but I'll be waiting for an answer." Fae steps back and looks away in embarrassment.
"You know it may be a while for you to wait. I have so much going on, and I've never thought of you that way. I... If im going to date someone, its for the long term." fae runs her hand through her hair in frustration. "So you have to understand that its a big decision to make. On top of not wanting to ruin your relationship with your brother." she sucks in a breath, looking off. She gives azusa a tentitive look before smiling apologetically. "I've got to get to work. Only can disappear for so many hours before my partner get annoyed with me." Fae looks around awkwardly. She passes him the bag and makes her way to the door. "Bye." She shouts quickly. "God sake." Fae mutters as she runs to her car, wanting to get to the station quickly. She checks her phone, then turns it off.
Don't want any distractions, now do we?
||| Time Skip |||
Fae parks outside the Sunrise Residence and makes her way upstairs. It was eleven o'clock and she wanted to rest. She'd gotten a good lead but Ishida said it was best to follow up on it in the morning. She takes the elevator up to the top floor, wanting at least a piece of fruit to feed the hunger in her belly. Pot noodle wasn't the best substitute for a dinner. She walks down to the kitchen but stops when she sees most of the brothers in the living room looking very stressed.
"I'm back." She smiles, which then turns into worry with the panicked looks they were sending her.
"Fae, do you know where Ema is?" Ukyo asks, approaching her.
"No, why?" Fae asks, her hunger instantly changing as she begins to panic. She rushes down the stairs, looking around at them all.
"She hasn't came back home since you dropped her off in town and won't answer anyone's calls or texts." Ukyo explains. Fae takes out her phone and turns it on. "We couldn't contact you either so we were getting worried."
"I'm so sorry, Ukyo. I turned my phone off." Fae explains as she impatiently waits for her phone to turn on.
Oh god she hasn't came back! Could she of run into trouble? Could someone of taken her?
Fae closes her eyes, hitting the dial button. "What did she have to pick up?" Fae asks, her eyes boring holes into Ukyo.
"She went to get her family register."
"Family. . . Register?" Fae's stomach drops. "Oh god. Oh god I'm so stupid!" Fae grabs her hair, her mind whirling with possibilities. Then the phone gets answered. "Ema! Where are you? Are you okay!?" Fae starts panicking as the brothers watch her with wide eyes. There was a pause before Ema answered.
"Did you know?" Ema's voice is hoarse and Fae could feel her own eyes going red. She's sure Ema's eyes are too.
"O-of course I knew, Emmy. I've always known." The line is quiet for a moment.
"W-why didn't you tell me!?" theres a pause as Ema takes a shaky breath. "Do I not matter enough?" Ema's voice broke, and it was clear she is going to burst out crying in a matter of seconds.
"No! No! I love you Emmy! It just wasn't my place to tell you! It was Rinatoru's." Fae rushes, her hand running through her hair as she impatiently paces.
"But he isn't your dad, is he? . . . He's not my dad, either. Papa didn't care about me." Ema chokes a sob.
"Just tell me where you are. I can't have you on the streets alone. I'll tell you everything, I'll explain it all. I can't just have you out like this. Everyone's worried." Fae continues pacing, ever so often her eyes darting to Masaomi and Ukyo.
"Don't look for me! I'm don't belong there! You don't belong there!" Ema shouts in anger.
"Don't get angry Emmy, it-"
"You're not even related to me! Don't act like you care! You only wanted to be my sister for your own selfish reasons!"
"Emmy I know you're mad, so I know you don't mean any of this, just come back h-"
"Neither of us belong there! They don't love us! They don't love me! They don't love you! You're so- Fae, you lied to me!" ema is shouting down the lie, her voice cracking as she sobs.
"Calm down, Emmy. I said I'd explain." Fae sounds desperate.
"You're not even my real sister! Your parents died! Why didn't you just die with them?! I hate you! You shouldn't even be alive! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!" Ema shouts and Fae could hear her sobs. Fae stops. She feels ice shoot through her body before red hot licks at her head. She turns away from the brothers, her breathing ragged. She feels a hand on her shoulder. She gasos, looking back to see Masaomi. He looks compationate and Fae feels the first tear drop. She goes numb before sniffinf, turning away from him.
"Ex-excuse you?" Fae sounds hysterical, but somehow contain. She grabs her hair, staring up at the ceiling. "What do you mean, Ema? Please repeat what you just said. Carefully." Fae's voice is dark, her fist clutching her phone so tightly it turns white. Ema begins tk splutter a responce, but Fae cuts her off with firey reply. "Don't you dare say that again, young lady!" Fae is shouting now, and the brothers watch her with wide eyes. They'd never seen her mad. "Don't you ever say that to anyone! I'm your family, whether you like it or not! We don't share the same blood, no, we don't! But that doesn't make me any less of a family member, does it? Tell me where you are or god help me!" fae gives a jagged breath. "I will not rest until I find you."
"You're lying! You don't care! You just want me there to have the family you never had! You hate me because of what I said! No one cares about me and will drop me the first chance they get!" Ema shouts. It is silent from Fae's end as her face darkens.
"Fae, are you alright?" Masaomi asks, stepping forwards but Fae stops him by holding up her hand, shaking her head as she tries to hold herself together.
"Forty minutes." Fae mumbles into the phone.
"What?" Ema asks quietly.
"It will take me forty minute to find your sorry ass and I'll give you the best hug I've ever given and it will be so filled with my sisterly love that you'll forget what you read on that damn family register." Fae says, standing up straight and sending the two oldest boys a weary smile before she turns on her foot and makes her way to the elevator.
"How are you going to find her? It's too late for you to be out." Masaomi asks.
"I think you've forgotten Masaomi. I'm a cop." Fae sends him a weak grin as she runs down the stair, leaving them in silence.
"Oh-oh God Fae! I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have said that." Ema sobs uncontrollably.
"It doesn't matter what you say, because I'll always love you." Fae hiccups. "Just give me forth minutes to prove how much I love you." Fae hangs up, runs past her car, and down the streets as the rain begins to pour down on her.
||| Ema |||
Ema sits on the bench as she cries into her hand, her eyes red and puffy. Ema's phone cluched tightly in her hand.
I can't believe I said that to her! My own sister! She probably doesn't even love me anymore. I'm the worst! No wonder why my parents didn't want me!
Her thoughts cause her to cry even more as her body trembles. A light rain begins to sprinkle down. Her phone rings again and she looks to read the name, only to hand up once she sees its one of her 'brothers'.
"Couldn't you at least of answered it?" A voice asks. Ema looks up to see Natsume standing a few meters away.
"Natsume, what are you doing?" Ema asks, wiping at her eyes.
"Hey, that's my line. I got a call that you hadn't come home, so I've been looking for you." Natsume explains.
"Why?" Ema chokes back a sob.
Why is he looking for me? I'm sure if he knew I wasn't really family he wouldn't care. . . The only one that truly cares is Fae. She didn't even shout at me when I t-. . . Told her to die. . .
"What do you mean 'why'?" Natsume stops in his tracks.
"Because I'm someone that no one needs." A shadow casts on her face.
"Did something happen?" Natsume asks as the rain starts getting heavier. "Anyway, I'm going to let Kyo know." Natsume lifts up his phone.
"Please don't call him." Ema panics.
I've already got Fae looking for me, I don't want anyone else to see me. I don't want to go back there. . . I don't belong.
"I don't... want to go home." Natsume watches her.
"Seriously, what happened to you?" Natsume asks. Ema doesn't reply. "You don't want to go home, no matter what?" He asks again. She shakes her head. Natsume sighs, rubbing his forehead.
I've cause so many problems, I'm sure they don't want me there.
"Then, would my apartment be okay?" Ema looks up at him in surprise. "If you're not opposed to it, then come. It'll be better than staying here."
Natsume opens the door to his apartment and Ema follows after him.
"Here, come on in." Natsume removes his shoes, only for two cats to start brushing against his legs. "Hey, Tsubaki, get off me! Azusa, no playing around!" Natsume scolds.
"Tsubaki and Azusa?" Ema repeats as she looks down at the cats.
"Yeah. Why they're named after my brothers is a long story. Anyway, just come on in."
"Thank you for having me."
"You hungry?"
"Oh, no." Ema shakes her head as she walks inside.
"Want something to drink?"
"No thank you." Ema walks inside and looks around.
"Then, at least, go take a shower. It might make you feel a little better." Ema nods as she walks into the bathroom and starts up the shower. Natsume sits on the floor of the balcony and takes out a cigarette, flipping open his phone and dials up Ukyo.
"Kyo, I've got Ema at my place. She's alright, just wet from the rain." Natsume gets straight to the point.
"Thank god." Ukyo sighs in relief. "Is Fae there?" Natsume blows out the smoke.
"No. Why would she be here?"
"I told Fae that Ema went missing and she phoned her up. They seemed to have an argument and Fae ran out to find her." Ukyo informs, worry lacing his tone. Natsume widens his eyes in surprise.
"It's raining and pitch black outside." Natsume said. Ukyo chuckles.
"Fae's a very stubborn woman. Expect her in the next thirty minutes. She ran out ten minutes ago."
"That's about the same time I picked up Ema."
"Yes. Is she alright? They seemed to have quiet a row." Ukyo asks.
"She did seem shaken up, and she said about not wanting her? What's that about?"
"I'm not sure. Fae said something along those lines too. She seemed quiet angry as well. I'd never seen her so cross before. It was a shock to all of us, but we weren't so surprised when she ran out the house to fine her with a grin. She sure is a challenge." Ukyo sighs.
"Yeah, form the impression I got of her she seemed like that." Natsume smiles slightly, then shakes his head to get rid of the thoughts. "But Ema is staying the night at mine. She didn't want to go back home for some reason. Is anything happening that I don't know of?"
"I'm not sure about Ema, but I know some of our brothers have an eye for Fae. She seems adamant to keep them as brother though. . . Such a shame."
"And why is that a shame?" Natsume scowls slightly.
"Never mind. Forget I said anything about that." Ukyo rushes. Natsume nods as he stares out into the night. "I'll be sure to tell everyone that Ema is alright, but text me when Fae turns up. None of them will rest until they're both okay."
"Okay, I'll phone you when she arrives." Natsume hangs up and crushes his cigarette butt. He hears the bathroom door open and sees Ema walk in.
"I'm sorry for imposing on you." She apologises.
"Nah, never mind that. What happened?" Natsume asks, standing up. "You don't have to force yourself to tell me, but if you want my help, I'm here."
"I'm sorry Natsume, I can tell you in the morning. . . But I'm really tired. Can I go to sleep now?"
"Yeah, sure. I'll go get you a blanket. You can sleep on the sofa." Natsume walks over to his cupboard and takes out a blanket and hands it too her. Ema lays down as Natsume sits on the floor and watches the door. Ukyo had said Fae would arrive soon, so he best be ready to deal with another emotional female.
Twenty minutes later and Natsume could hear his door being pounded on. He jumps up and answers it. He's met with the sight of Fae, holsing the door frame, soaked to the bone as her clothes hang to her body.
"Natsume. . . Ema's here, isn't she?" Fae asks, her breath wispy.
"Yeah, come in." Natsume moves out the way as Fae removes her shoes and runs over to Ema's sleeping form. Fae covers her mouth with her hand, the other reaching out to rest on Ema's head.
"Thank you so much, Natsume. This means so much to us, you letting her stay here." Fae keeps her eyes on Ema.
"I'm her brother, I'll do what I can." Natsume nods.
"She looks so tiered. I bet she was coming up with stupid scenarios and reasons for all of this." Fae laughs lightly, standing herself up. "I guess you know what happened?" Fae asks, her eyes painfully looking away from Ema to lock with Natsume's brown eyes.
"She didn't explain. She said she was tiered and feel asleep straight away." Natsume informs, running his hand through his hair.
"Oh. . . I guess I should explain then, huh?" Fae smiles weakly.
"You don't have to."
"But I should. We've already caused such a problem for you, you deserve an explanation." Fae walks over to Ema's bag which was at the end of the sofa. She looks through it and brings out a white envelope. "Its Ema's family register." Fae takes out the sheet and hands it to Natsume. He reads it over and widens his eyes in surprise.
"Adopted?"
"Yeah." Fae rubs her neck. "Ema's parents died when she was little from a disease and Rinatoru took her in. Ema said that Dad didn't care enough as he's never around, and that I'm just using her. I guess she feels unwanted as Rinatoru or I never told her about her parents. That's obviously why she's like this." Fae stares down at the floor in shame.
"That's. . ."
"Ema always comes up with weird reasoning for things, so I wouldn't put it passed her. Rinatoru hasn't even visited us since he's gotten married to Miwa, so she probably thinks he dumped her at the Sunshine Residence."
"And you?" Natsume asks.
"Huh?"
"Well Ema is adopted, but what about you? You don't have to tell me, but you look torn about something too." Natsume comments.
"Well I guess I can't keep it a secret any long." Fae takes a deep breath. "Rinatoru is my Godfather. So when my parents died when I was ten, he took me in. I was already best friends with Ema and already treated her like a sister, so it didn't really affect everything as much."
"What happened to your parents?"
"They died in a car crash. Well my dad did, my mom was hospitalised but. . . But she was in so much pain and wouldn't recover so they had to... Euthanise her." Fae gulps as she tries to hold herself together.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't know." Natsume let's out a breath.
"It's fine. I don't really open up to people much and I know I can be hard to handle, so I'm sorry for everything I've done that may have caused a problem." Fae runs her hands through her hair.
"You haven't done anything wrong."
"I lied, Natsume. I've been telling myself all this time that you're my Step-Godbrother. That doesn't even exist. Then with your brothers, I've caused so many arguments and I've been a terrible sister to Ema. I—I'm terrible! How can I even call myself a sister when I wasn't there for her?!" Fae's voice cracks as she holds herself, staring down at the floor.
"You're here now. I'm sure no one else thinks of it this way. We all love you, nothing can change that." Natsume steps forwards and grabs her arm, making her look up at him. Her eyes are red and puffy, brimmed with tears as her lip quivers. He rubs her back in circles as her wet cloths hung to his dry ones. "No ones watching, you can let it out now." He whispers into her ear, hugging her. He holds her head into his shoulder as her body starts to shake and she lets out quiet sobs.
"That's the problem." She sniffs. "I've caused so many problems there. I've been the worst sister ever for Ema. I'm sure if she finds out what's been happening she'd hate me for it. She already hates me." Fae tightens her grip on Natsume. "I'm just causing problem after problem and tearing her family apart. I'm not needed. If I go, Ema will have the perfect family she's always deserved." Fae cluches the fabric of Natsume's cloths in her hand and pushes away from him. "I should go." She steps back and wipes away her tears and makes her way to the door.
"Hold on!" Natsume shouts. The next thing she knows is Natsume's hands are on her shoulders and he staring down into her hazel eyes. Her breath catches in her throat, her heart hammers in her chest as all her conflicting emotion have finally risen. She is angry, sad, upset, broken into pieces. But most of all, she feels disappointed in herself.
"I'm not letting you go anywhere." Natsume whispers. Fae's body goes hot as she watches him lean down. He's getting closer. She feels foggy, oddly light, as her heart becomes audiable to her ears. Her stomach twists as Natsume hesitantly places his lips on hers.
They are rough and slightly chapped and he tasted like cigarettes, but he feels so warm. She instantly kisses back, her lips moving automatically against his. She grabs the front of his shiet, pulling him in closer they're flush against one another, both closing their eyes. Fae tilts her hair, one hand combing through his hair as the other grabs at a lope on his trousers, trying to get him closer, trying to get rid of the feelings that she is filled with.
She is drowning in them. And if she was going to drown, she'd make sure to be gasping for air when she got to the top.
