Chapter 2

Once Fae finished placing the boxes in the right place, she sat down next to Ema. Ukyou and Wataru were kind enough to bring up food for both girls.

"I'm gonna go wash these up, you need to rest some more," Fae instructs Ema. With that, she carries both bowls up to the 5th-floor kitchen and washes them up. As she makes her way back down to the 4th-floor, she could hear a sound from the floor below. She steps out of the elevator, hearing loud voices from below. Fae raised a brow, pressing the button for the 3rd-floor to investigate. The noise gets louder as she turns right once stepping out of the elevator, down the hallway. If what she read was right from the blueprints in Ema's room, then this is the area where Iori, Yuusuke, Fuuto and Wataru sleep. She stops outside the second room to hear Wataru complaining through the door. Lifting her hand, she raps her knuckles gently against the door. From the other side, she heard Masaomi telling her to enter.

"I heard Wataru, so I was wondering what was keeping him up?" She brings herself around the door, closing it with a soft click behind her. The balcony door was open slightly, letting a breeze ruffle the curtains. Wataru was perched on the edge of his blue sailor print bed, Masaomi sat on the oak chair beside it. The room was what you would have expected of a 10-year-old. Blue and white colour scheme and drawings over the walls, stuck up by sellotape. Wataru looked at Fae with a beaming smile while Masaomi looked relieved.

"Sis, I wanted to give you a goodnight hug." Wataru whines, reaching his arms out as he approaches her. Fae smiles and wraps her arms around his torso. She crouches down as Wataru buries his face in her shoulder, and to his surprise, Fae lifts him up and gently places him on the teddy bear filled the bed.

"He refused to let me read him a story until I got you to come and give him a goodnight hug." Masaomi informs Fae with a chuckle. She smiles down at Wataru, laughing under her breath.

"You should be nice to Masaomi, he only wants you to get a good nights rest." Wataru wiggles under his covers at Fae's words, pulling up his blankets. Fae laughs softly at him and stands up, but Wataru grabs her arm. Masaomi gives a sheepish smile to Fae.

"Can you read me a story?" Wataru asks, blinking his long black lashes at her, baiting her.

"If Masaomi doesn't mind? I don't want to be stepping over my bounds." She questions, looking at the oldest brother for permission.

"If you would like to, I honestly don't mind." Masaomi smiles, brushing down his legs and rising from the chair.

"Then, of course, I'll read you a story." She smiles down to Wataru. Masaomi stands, offering her the chair with a gracious nod.

"Thank you." She inclines her head and makes herself comfortable, crossing her ankles.

"Don't give Fae any trouble, I don't want to have to come in here and tell you off." Masaomi warns Wataru and kisses his forehead. He turns to Fae with a smile. "I'll just be on the floor above if you want me, Fae."

"Okay, Masa-bro! Good night!" Wataru beams, giving a toothy grin to his brother.

"Goodnight, both of you." He closes the door behind himself and Fae looks to Wataru, biting her bottom lip in thought.

"Would you like a certain story?" Fae inquires, crossing her ankles. She had read Ema lots of stories when she was younger, but Wataru was a boy. Did he want the same stories about princesses? Fae looks at the bookcase beside Wataru's bed and looks at all the titles, thinking of what to pick.

"Make one up, Sis." Wataru shuffles down in his bed, noticing her inspecting his books. Masaomi had read them to him millions of times before. Surely his new sister would have a new exciting story for him?

Fae thought for a moment before telling the tale of The Wild Swans.

"In a faraway kingdom, there lives a widowed king with his twelve children: eleven princes and one princess. One day, the king decides to remarry. He marries a wicked queen who, unknownst to the king, was a witch. Out of spite, and to rein the kingdom longer, the queen turns her eleven stepsons into swans and forces them to fly away, shooing them off the palace grounds. The queen then tries to bewitch their 16-year-old sister, Ema, but Ema's goodness proved to be so strong, that the evil queen's spell did not work. Instead, the queen made up malicious lies about the princess that lead her own father to banish her. Ema, heartbroken, left the kingdom with her eleven swan brothers far away to a foreign land where she is out of the reach of her stepmother." Fae adjust her position, Wataru watching her with pensive eyes. "There, Ema is guided by the queen of the fairies to gather stinging nettles in graveyards to knit into shirts, that will eventually help her brothers regain their human forms, all while never speaking a word. For speaking would break the magic and leave her precious brother in swan form for the rest of their lives. Ema endures painfully blistered hands from nettle stings, day and night, working hard to finish the shirts. The king of another faraway land, Wataru, happens to come across the mute Ema and falls in love with her. He grants her a room in his castle where she continues her knitting. Eventually, he proposes to crown her as his queen and wife, and she accepts. However, the Archbishop is chagrined because he thinks Ema is a witch, but the king will not believe him. One night Ema runs out of nettles and is forced to collect more in a nearby church graveyard where the Archbishop is watching. Ghoulish spirits that devour the bodies of the dead are also in the churchyard, and the archbishop believes that Ema is in league with them. He reports the incident to the king as proof of witchcraft. The Archbishop orders to put Ema on trial for witchcraft. She can speak no word in her defence and is sentenced to death by burning at the stake. Even as the tumbril bears Ema away to execution, she continues knitting, determined to keep it up to the last moment of her life. This enrages the people, who are on the brink of snatching and destroying the shirts when the swans descend and rescue Ema. The people interpret this as a sign from Heaven that Ema is innocent, but the executioner still makes ready for the burning. When Ema throws the shirts over the swans, her brothers return to their human forms. Ema is now free to speak and tell the truth, but she faints from exhaustion, so her brothers explain. As they do so, the firewood around Ema's stake miraculously takes root and bursts into flowers. The king plucks the topmost flower and presents it to Ema, and they are married." Some way towards the end, Wataru was giving small puffs of air, his eyelids closed. Fae smoothed the blanket out and placed a kiss on his forehead. With soft footsteps, she leaves the room in silence.

She smiles, deja vu overwhelming her as she takes the elevator up one floor, going to check on Ema. It had only been forty minutes or so, but Ema still needed to get ready for tomorrow. Fae knew for a fact the girl hadn't taken out the rest of her school supplies. Off in thought, Fae steps out of the elevator and accidentally bumps shoulders with someone.

"I am so sorry." Fae immediately splutters, raising her hand over her mouth. She realises who she walked into, the male smiles merely in amusement at her.

"Hello, little sister." Kaname folds his arms over his chest. "I've just been to check on your sister and delivered the get-well gifts from everyone." He informs as he stops to talk.

"That's kind of everyone. Thank you for delivering them, Kaname." Fae smiles happily, glad that they are welcoming Ema.

"You can call me 'big brother'," Kaname instructs. Fae was taken back by this, and Kaname smiles. She hums in confusion.

"Sure thing, big brother," Fae said unsurely, squinting at the man suspiciously. Saying that right off the bat made her mouth feel funny, so she rolled her tongue around for measure. The word didn't sound right coming from her.

"Nice, now one more time," Kaname instructs with a teasing smile. She crosses her arms impatiently, raising a brow at him with a tilt of her head. Kaname hums with a smile, looking her over. She seemed too keen to give in, so Kaname knew if he went any further with the names she'd get further from it. "Are you able to sleep alone?" He questions and before giving her time to answer, he continues. "Since you aren't as close to Ema's room, I wouldn't mind sleeping with you." Kaname gives her a savvy smile.

"I'm capable of sleeping alone." Fae furrows her eyebrows in agitation.

"If there's anything you need, let big brother know, I'll come running," Kaname told her. Fae nods hesitantly, her mouth forming into a grimace.

"Thanks." She holds her arm, rubbing her elbow, and looks away. She wasn't used to this; the help of others. The most she ever let Ema do was cook food for her. But the support that the Asahina's were offering seemed odd to her as she wasn't used to it. Kaname leans forward and holds her chin, tilting it up. Fae froze in her spot, her stomachs sinking as her eyes widened.

"Then, good night." He kisses her cheeks. Now Fae wasn't exactly sure why she was red. Either anger or embarrassment, she could not tell. Fae kept a straight face, then looks up at the man with a firm jaw. Angry, definitely angry.

"Good night, Asahina." Fae struts passed him with her fists tightened, a deep frown imprinted on her face. She rushes towards Ema's room, wiping furiously at her cheek in an attempt to remove the invisible mark that so-called 'monk' left. No matter how much she rubbed, she could still feel the tingling sensation. If he had done anything to upset her precious Emmie, then Fae would take out her handcuffs. "Perverted Monk." Fae opens up Ema's door, not bothering to knock, to see Ema already in her Pyjamas with Juli by her side as she rummaged through one of her boxes. Juli squeaks, running towards Fae and climbing up her side to perch himself on her shoulder.

"What did Kaname do?" Fae sighs as she rubs her forehead, feeling wrinkles forming.

"He came to give me get well gifts from everyone," Ema motions to the metal trolley filled with gifts. "Then told me to call him 'big brother'... Then he kissed me good night." Ema's face reddens at just remember it.

"I'll get that perverted monk." Fae mumbles as she crouches next to Ema. "Did you say anything after that?" Fae asks calmly, wondering if Kaname had done anything to make Ema even more uncomfortable.

"N-No. I couldn't say anything. He said goodnight and left, but I was frozen in place." Ema said as she takes her toothbrush out from he toiletries bag. Fae sighs, calming herself down. Her eyes wondered to the trolley filled with presents. Various gifts were placed upon it. Energy bars, flowers, water bottles and teddies.

"It was kind of them to get you get-well presents." Fae notes as she searches through Ema's boxes, removing piles of clothes and began to put them on their hanger. Juli finally jumps off to play into a now empty cardboard box.

"I got some sleep and my temperatures down, so I'm fine." Ema said as she shuffled through another box. Fae hums in understanding. "Escort me?" Ema whispers under her breath, looking at Juli. "But it's inside the house." Ema whispers. Fae understood what she was doing, looking over her shoulder with a raised brow.

"Do you want me to take you down?" Fae asks. Ema always placed her worried onto Juli unconsciously, pretending the animal to talk. Fae let her be. If that was the way she wanted to sort out her problems then so be it. Fae hangs up another piece of clothing, Ema watching blankly before looking away.

"I am 16." Ema mumbles, closing up a box.

"And? I still need to watch my little sister." Ema sighs as she looks at Fae and Juli before giving up trying to reason with them. They go to the fifth-floor and stand at the landing as Fae recalls where they needed to go.

"Go left." Fae instructs as both girls carefully step as Juli runs under their feet and stops at a corner, peering around the edge. "What are you doing?" Fae raised a brow, crouching beside the furry creature.

"Which way now?" Ema asks, stopping behind her, her things weighing down in her arms.

"Left to the bathroom." Fae instructs as she points down the left hallway. Ema trots ahead as Juli jumps around at Fae's feet. The elder one takes careful steps, the grey squirrel causing mischief and jumping to where she places her feet. Ema lets out a squeak, and Fae picks up her pace to see what had caught her by surprise.

From what Fae could see, it appeared that Ema had opened up the foggy bathroom doors, expecting it to be empty. But to Ema's surprise, Subaru stood inside with only a towel around his waist, a bottle of water clutched in his hand.

Of course there's someone in the bathroom to hurt my little sister's innocence eyes.

Ema gawks at her new elder brother. The towel was so loose around his waist that she could see the treasure trail of hair and his tightly packed abs.

"You two..." Subaru seemed ridiculously unaware of the compromising situation at hand. Ema shuffles back, hiding behind Fae with a dense blush.

"You okay?" He asks absentmindedly.

"Yeah. We're fine." Fae said, moving to completely block Ema's view of Subaru. Ema whispers a quick sorry under her breath, looking everywhere except Subaru. Fae raised a brow at Subaru then coughs twice in her clenched fist, trying to contain her smile. He looks at her in confusion, so Fae darts her eyes between his naked chest to his eyes. He still didn't understand.

"Subaru, you're not wearing a shirt." She crosses her arms, waiting for him to realise so Ema could have her normal blood flow back.

"Oh, m-my bad!" he panics, quickly standing on the other side of the door, hiding from view.

"I'm sorry, please excuse me." Ema shouts, running past Fae, towards the landing. Fae bows to Subaru quickly and follows after Ema. "That was a surprise." Ema splutters as she leans her back against the wall.

"What? The fact he was only wearing a towel around his waist, or that he didn't realise the situation he was in?" Fae rhetorically questions, causing Ema to re-live the moment in her head with deep red cheeks. "You are so innocent." Fae teases, grabbing her sister's nose. Juli swipes his paw in the direction of the bathroom.

"There's something I just have to tell you." A pleading voice said from the living room. Fae raises a brow to Ema.

"Who's that?" Ema asks quietly, trying to peer over the landing.

"Tsubaki, I think?" Fae furrows her brow as she approaches the railing to check her assumption.

"What's that?" Azusa replies to Tsubaki. He was sat so close to his twin, their heads practically against each other, Tsubaki placing his hand on Azusa's leg.

"We've been together forever, right?" Tsubaki asks softly.

"That's true..." Azusa agrees, sounding hesitant.

"But lately, when I'm with you, its kind of like..." Tsubaki starts, turning his head away.

"What's wrong?" Subaru asks, popping up fully clothed and a towel around his neck, stopping the droplets of water that ran down his black hair from wetting the floor. Ema jumps in surprise and stares at Subaru in shock. The conversation from the living room continues to echo through the 5th floor, for all ears to hear.

"My heart starts hammering, and I feel restless. And I get irritated easily when other guys are around you and stuff..." Tsubaki said.

"What?" Azusa was taken back.

"I love you! I want you to be mine!" Tsubaki tells him. Fae smirks to herself, wanting to laugh - but at the same time wanting to punish her sister for not listening to Rinatoru. Ema stands next to her, shocked by the conversation she just overheard. She looks to Fae, her hands clasped over her mouth.

"They're both guys, and they're both brothers, right?" Ema questions in hushed astonishment.

"No, these guys are--" Subaru starts but gets interrupted.

"Um, I'm going to my room." Ema said as she rushes towards the elevator, brushing past the basketball player.

"S-Sure." Subaru stutters with a nod. Tsubaki and Azusa made their way up the stairs and onto the landing, spotting Ema just before she turns down the corridor.

"What's this? What's going on?" Tsubaki asks, stepping forward with a grin. Ema squeaks in surprise, looking over her shoulder in abject horror.

"How are you feeling?" Azusa asks her, approaching with small steps. Ema looks to Fae wanting her to answer, but she watches Ema passively and folds her hands behind her back, rolling onto her heels. Ema began to ramble, making small hand gestures.

"Your face is bright red." Tsubaki points out as he steps towards her, his twin following in tow.

"Maybe you're still feeling a bit feverish?" Azusa asks in concern.

"Th-That's not it," Ema stutters. The twins look at each other wondering what could be wrong.

"Then, is there anything you need?" Tsubaki asks.

"No..." Ema looks down, feeling her face grow hot.

"I know what's wrong!" Tsubaki said in realisation. Ema looks at him in shock. "Maybe you can't sleep or something? If that's the case, then I'll sleep with you."

"N-No." Ema stutter, deepening her blush.

"If she needed a sleeping buddy, she's got me, so that's not the case." Fae puts to rest before looking over to Ema. "So Emmy, what's wrong?" Fae innocently smiles.

"Seriously, you can tell us anything. We're your brothers after all." Tsubaki pesters, though it was apparent in concern.

"R-Right." Ema stutters again, nodding. Juli squeaks at her, and Ema looks to Fae, her eyes confiding in her.

"You might as well." Fae agrees, shrugging her shoulders, trying to keep her lips from twitching upwards.

"Um... Y-You have my support!" Ema shouts, closing her eyes. Fae froze, trying her hardest not to laugh. Azusa and Tsubaki stare at Ema, having no idea what she was jabbering on about. "No matter what happens, we're family after all. I-I overheard... That is... Um... Your conversation... " Ema mumbles, getting quieter and quieter.

"Conversation?" Azusa repeats before his eyes widen in realisation. "Oh, so that's it!"

"Ah-ha, now it makes sense." Tsubaki grins as he hugs Azusa. "Yes, that's right. I couldn't keep it in any longer." He pulls his brother closer, brushes his fingertips against Azusa's chin. " I couldn't stop myself, so I declared my love for Azusa just now."

"D-Declared?" Subaru inquires, unsure of what is happening.

"I feel like I should apologise somehow..." Ema said quietly.

"It's fine, it's fine." Tsubaki grins at her before fluttering his eyelashes up at Azusa. "Besides, the love between us is mutual. Right, Azusa?" Tsubaki leans his head onto Azusa's, almost closing the distance. Juli, Ema and Subaru just stare at both twins with wide eyes. Ema, unable to bear the awkwardness of this situation, starts rushing over to the elevator. Tsubaki starts laughing loudly. Fae covers her face with her hand, trying to suppress her own chuckles.

"Your reactions were priceless, both yours and Subaru." Tsubaki laughs.

"What?" Ema turns to them.

"We were doing a read through of a script," Tsubaki tells her.

"Script?" Ema asks. Tsubaki holds it forwards, flapping around the pages.

"Both Azusa and Tsubaki are voice actors." Fae said in a duh tone, giggling. "Wataru told you this morning, I can't believe you forgot already." She approaches Ema and pats the girl's shoulder.

"W-Why didn't you tell me?" Ema pouts.

"Because next time Rinatoru or a sibling tells you something, you need to listen." Fae states, poking Ema's nose. Juli stares up at the twins before scattering towards Ema and leaping up onto her shoulder.

"I'm so sorry!" Ema shouts, bowing to both twins. "I've gotten in the way of your work!"

"It's fine," Tsubaki said. "Never mind that, would you two be my new practice partner? I think that would get me psyched up."

"Okay now, enough with the jokes." Azusa smiles as he rolls his eyes.

"Sorry, I know you're just on the mend." Tsubaki pats Ema's head.

"Seriously you two, I'm sorry all my big brothers are so weird." Subaru directs towards Ema and Fae.

"N-Not at all." Ema stutters. Fae grins, giving Ema a comforting squish as the twins lead the way to the elevator. Four of them step out onto the fourth floor, leaving Subaru alone.

"Will you be alright?" Fae turns to Ema, who stood slightly behind her. Ema nods. "If you need anything just come to get me. I'll be there in a click." Before Ema enters her room, Fae gives her a big hug and a smile.

"Night, Emmy." Fae buries her face into Ema's hair, mumbling.

"G'night, Fifi." Ema hugs back.

"Good night, Ema." Both twins say as the girl opens her bedroom door. Ema nods to them and walks into her room. Azusa stops at the room on the left of Ema's, and Tsubaki stops on the right.

"Night Azusa, night Tsubaki." Fae smiles over her shoulder, giving them both a grin.

"Good night, Fae." They say in unison. Fae walks to her room, locking the door with her key and the chain. She rummages through a box and finds her pyjamas. Putting on the loose top and pyjama shorts, she falls onto her bed. Fae lets out a sigh of content. She turns on her back, hugs her pillow to her chest, and stares at the ceiling. She could hear the sounds of the night through her walls, people moving around and the last of them settling into bed, and yet she could hear the leaves rustling from the big oak tree on the front drive.

She places the pillow under her head, puffing it up before her hand absentmindedly finds its way to the silver chain on her neck, it playing with the two metal rings that hung from it. She lifts them up so she could see them, and reads the engravings from inside of them. She smiles, curling up on her side with her back pressed against the wall. Nestling her face into her second pillow, she wraps her arms around it.

She flicks a loose strand of pale brown hair away from her face and neck, scrunching up her face as it tickles her skin, before closing her eyes. Her breathing slows down as she gets her well deserved rest after an action-packed day.
