Chapter 13
Fae walks over to a table, placing down the two bouquets of flowers. Ema joins her, the girls idly chatting away as they watch couples on the dance floor, commenting about all the faces they recognised. Aunties, uncles, granddads and grandmas, and a couple of faces they knew from TV. As Fae continues to gossip, she notices Ema looking off to her right, watching as someone approaches them.
"Hello, Iori." Fae smiles, looking up at the younger boy. His pale grey suit fits him well, the aqua blue tie standing out on his pristine white top. Somehow, Iori seeming to pull off the garish colour. He offers his hand out to Fae as he peers up through his lashes.
"Could I ask you for a moment of your time to spare me a dance?" He questions, his head bowing slightly as his features soften, looking almost vulnerable. Fae places her hand atop his, noticing how soft his skin is and offer a soothing smile.
"I would love to." Fae smiles at him. He leads her over to the floor, before a hand curls over her hip and their hands intertwine.
"I should apologise beforehand," Fae starts with a bashful glance, "I'm not very good at dancing."
"You seem to be dancing very well." Iori smiles as they moved slowly together, their bodies swaying to the music.
"I did have to have lots of practice." Fae sheepishly admits, a small giggle leaving her at the memory. She recalls all the time she spent with Haru practising. To say Haru was surprised just to be called up for dancing lessons was an understatement. Fae watches her feet, her chin level to try to watch discreetly.
"You are dancing perfectly fine." Iori compliments in a soft voice, almost encouragingly.
"Well, that's because I'm following you." Fae looks away from her feet. "Where did you learn to dance so well?"
"At school. We host lots of events that require formal dancing." Iori explains.
"Just listening to you saying that makes me feel like a pauper." Fae laughs.
"How so?" Iori asks, confused. He is disarmed by Fae, so used to girls being reserved and quiet around him. Sure, Fae got bashful, but she is blunt. There was never any stepping on eggshells around her, and she seems so open.
"That aura of yours if flowing everywhere, spouting out 'Prince'. Your looks do nothing to help your predicament either." Fae compliments. Ever since the day Fae met Iori, he has always been composed, always giving off this calm, princely aura. But never once has she seen him laugh or give a proper smile. That is her aim right now; to loosen him up. "May I ask you a question? Or am I too lowly a person to talk to the prince?" Fae asks, wanting to tease Iori. Iori blinks owlishly.
"I give permission to ask." Iori joined in hesitantly, eyebrows twitching as he tries to keep a neutral expression.
"Well, Prince Iori," a grin makes its way on her face, "is it you that takes care of those beautiful flowers outside the residence?"
"Why it is I, that waters those beautiful flowers every day." Iori puffs up his chest, before looking to her for confirmation. He wants to be told he is doing correct, a look you'd see on a child's face when they are hesitant about whatever task they do. Fae can't stop smiling at this new side of Iori she hadn't seen before. It wouldn't surprise her if he were part of the drama department or something.
"I would also like to thank my Prince for giving my sister flowers when she fell ill. She was delighted with them. In fact, they're still in her room." Fae giggles, trying to keep herself composed.
"I do what I can for my family." Iori's lip twitches up, his hazel eyes soft and exposed.
"I can tell." Her voice is faint, and Fae can't stop her hand on his shoulder to cup his neck, her fingertips just touching the curly hairs on the back of his neck. Iori takes a staggered breath, his body jolting almost as his eyes dart away from her. The song ends, and they bow to each other. Fae watches as he darts off, his fingers twitching as he wipes his hands on his fitted trousers. It was mean, but she enjoyed teasing anyone with an innocent streak. Yet, she didn't expect that moment of vulnerability from him. Fae returns to her table expecting to see Ema still sat down awkwardly, but Ema is gone, dancing with Yuusuke. Fae lifts her camera from the table, lining it up as she snaps a picture of the two blushing teens. She wonders who initiated it, perturbed she missed watching the teen fumble. She continues to snap away, drifting between the brothers and guests to get them as themselves, no phoney smiles and stiff poses. Just natural, human, interactions.
"I've never seen him smile like that." Kaname stops by her side, a cup in hand filled with who-knows-what as he watches Iori.
"Neither have I." Fae smiles, watching Iori dancing with a girl. She lowers the camera, her gaze shifting to Kaname who eyes her, but not in the way she expected. His eyes soften, lingering on her hand before looking up at her. He sets his drink down on a nearby table, which so happens to be her own, and inclines his head to her.
"May I ask for a dance?" Kaname offers a hand, raising a brow.
"Of course." Fae rolls her eyes, but a smile stays on her lips for once. They reach the dance floor, and Kaname wastes no time in snaking his arm around Fae.
"You're meant to look into your partner's eyes." He brings up his hand and caresses her cheek with a finger, earning a stifled look. "I don't want to miss a moment of looking into those beautiful eyes."
"Not unless you want me to step on your toes, then I would let me look where ever I please." Fae looks down again, ignoring him. Kanane brings her closer, pressing their chests together to block her view. Fae feels Kaname's chest expanding against her and fall, her stomach twisting and bubbling.
"I don't want to miss a second of looking at that face of yours." He said lowly, repeating himself. Fae swallows, trying to brush it off with a roll of her eyes. Then she notices something and looks elsewhere, trying hard not to laugh. "Are my good looks so amazing you are blinded?" Kaname wanders, not truly meaning the narcissistic tone he takes, only trying to fluster her. It worked so well on her sister.
"No, you just look real funny in that fancy cravat of yours." Fae giggles, her hand removing itself from his shoulder to poke at the weird tie. Kaname's face flushes, a deep chuckle leaving him as Fae takes no time in wasting this moment of bonding. "Sorry, it looks good on you." She gives him an apologetic smile. "It's just that I'm not used to seeing you in anything other than your 'monk' outfit."
"You say monk as if it's not my real job." Kaname comments, raising a brow.
"You do flirt with every girl you see, don't think Emmy didn't tell me what happened when she was ill." Fae pokes his chest. "Or what happened after the parent-teacher conference."
"I only flirt with the best." Kaname smiles proudly until he sees her face - a very unimpressed face.
"I carry a gun." Fae bluntly states. Kaname laughed nervously but brushed it off. Kaname hums, catching Faes attention. "What Kaname?" Fae inquires.
"You always brush of compliments. I think you need a monk to put yourself at peace." Kaname smirks as his hands slowly slips down her form, now resting on the small of her back.
"I think you're trying extra hard to be persistent today." Fae mumbles. "Anywho, I'm thirsty, so I'm gonna go get a drink. You should dance with more woman, they look like they're dreaming about something." She inclines her head towards a random group of middle-ages women. "I don't know what though?" Fae jokes as she removes his hands from her.
"You're so mean to me." Kaname sniffs playfully. Fae sighs and shakes her head, walking off to get her drink. She refills it, eyes watching the crowd again as she hovers by the drinks table.
"You look beautiful, darling." Hikaru compliments as he fills up a wine glass. He is wearing a velvet dress, and his hair is neatly brushed to the side. Fae studies him and wonders if he could look better in her outfits than she does.
That is a stupid thought, of course he would.
"I think you look so much better, you can make a model jealous Hikaru." Fae 's lip curls at the edge.
"You seem to have caught the eye of some boys." Hikaru brings his cup to his lips, eyes wandering over the crowd. He really wants to know what her reaction to things would be. She is an attractive female above the legal age living with men and hadn't made so much as an advance towards any of them. That is surprising as Asahina is the family known throughout their region for stunningly good-looks.
"Really? Lucky them." Fae says, her eyes now drifting over to some men. She brings her glass to her mouth, her lips touching the glass but not drinking.
"Do you see yourself getting married?" He asks. Fae catches herself before she pulls her glass away, making sure that she doesn't accidentally sip and choke, or spill.
"Not really, I mean, er," Fae hides her mouth behind the cup, "I'd like too. Very much so, but I wouldn't want to do that to anyone, and I haven't really found anyone yet, so..." She wonders off, waving her hand slightly in the air.
"I do know of a few men that would like to be your husband." Hikaru looks at her through the corner of his eye.
"Are you trying to hook me up with someone?" Fae lifts an eyebrow at him in suspicion.
"Oh, you're too good." He fakes innocents. Fae releases a deep breath and turns to look at him. "Don't even know how you connected the dots. So suspicious of little ol' me."
"I was wondering something," Fae looks him over.
"Yes?" Hikaru asks sceptically.
"Where do you get your clothes from?" She looks him in the eyes, boring him for the answer.
"You wouldn't know the place." Hikaru waves her off.
"Wow, you've even got the woman act together as well." Fae laughs, able to see he is joking.
"I know, I'm fabulous." He flips his hair. "But honey, you really need to wear dresses more, you look absolutely adorable!" Hikaru compliments. Fae blushes at this.
"I'm a woman, not some cute high schooler." Fae says with a hint of annoyance, but nevertheless a red face. This is her first time speaking with Hikaru alone, yet he feels like an old friend.
"Or could it be you have no dresses?" Hikaru wonders aloud. Fae laughs sarcastically.
"Of course I have dresses, I have you know I have-" Fae was going to say something, but Hikaru shot her an amused look "-four." Fae pouts, looking away in annoyance.
"Well, when I come over next, I'm taking you shopping." Hikaru declares with a smile, imagining her in lots of cute dresses.
"Really? Clothes shopping?" Fae inquires, her eyebrow perching.
"Any person would think you've never gone shopping." Hikaru muses, making her face a light shade of red.
"I do, it's just that most my clothes are for work," Fae admits. Hikaru laughs at this. Her serious demeanour they usually see is slowly breaking down, as she becomes closer to each brother. One brother approaches, having enough of that blubbering feeling in his stomach.
"Will you have a dance with your new big brother?" Questions Tsubaki. Fae smiles at him.
"Yes, you can. Excuse me, Hikaru." Fae gives a nods farewell to the dress wearing male and walks with Tsubaki to the dance floor. They start to waltz. Tsubaki smiles at Fae, but not one of his side grins, a genuine smile from the cheeky triplet himself.
"Are you alright, Tsubaki?" Fae asks.
"I just wanted to dance with my little sister." He whines, feeling as though Fae has accused him of something.
"Okay big boy, calm down. It was only a question." Fae laughs, making the male perk up and give her a grin. "So, what's your natural hair colour?" Fae asks as she stares up at his hair. Alcohol made her chatty, or she could just be trying to distract herself from their close proximity.
"It's black. Me and Natsume dyed our hair when we left school." Tsubaki explains, happy that his sister is putting an interest in him, and not one of her joking insults. Fae hums, staring at him, thinking. "What?" He asks.
"You suit white, I didn't think anyone could pull it off without looking old... But it really looks good on you." Fae tilts her head and smiles up at him, staring at his hair then looking into his violet eyes. Tsubaki blinks at his sister owlishly before giggling, looking away. Did his sister - the one covered in salt and snark - just give him a compliment? "But I think black still would've looked better." She focuses back on dancing, trying to keep the grin off her face. Tsubaki had to do a double take and started sulking. But still, his sister said he looked really good. He guessed that's the best he's gonna get from her. Fae and Tsubaki go their separate ways once the song ends, and Fae watches as Tsubaki makes a B line for the drinks. Sitting by himself, looking flushed and uncomfortable, is Subaru, with the face of a lost child. Fae smiles and heads towards the tall male.
"Can I have a dance with you, Subaru?" Fae asks, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Subaru starts to get nervous.
"Y-Yes." He jumps up, body rigid. Fae chuckles as she drags him to the floor. They start dancing, with quite a bit of space between them.
"I a-apologised to E-Ema." Subaru confesses, his stare hard.
"That's good of you." Fae smiles, watching the taller boy panic.
"I am sorry about what happened." He says quickly, his face growing red.
"It's fine Subaru, as you remember, we got our payback." Fae grins at him.
"I was late for basketball because of that." He mumbles, thinking she didn't hear him.
"Basketball? You play for Meji, don't you?" She asks, even though she already knew.
"Yes, Meiji University." Subaru seems to relax at the mention of the game.
"What number do you play as?" Fae asks, happy seeing her younger brother lighten up and not be flustered.
"I'm number 10!" He beams. "I love basketball, no sport can rival it!" Subaru gleams. Then he remembers he's in the company of a girl. "O-Oh, but you don't want to hear about that..." He trails off.
"I do, I would love to play a match with you sometime, Subaru. I bet watching you play would be as thrilling as playing with you." Fae smiles up at him, causing his cheeks to go a flame.
"Y-Yeah." He squeaks. Fae giggles at his shy demeanour and goes to ask him something when she feels a tug at the bottom of her dress. She looks down to see Wataru.
"Sis, can I dance with you?" Wataru asks, his eyes begging. Fae chuckles at his expression and excuses herself from Subaru to dance with Wataru. The brothers watch as Fae laughs with Wataru, spinning around the floor.

"I am knackered." Fae gives an airy laugh, sitting in the passenger seat as Ema and Wataru get in the back. Masaomi chuckles, helping Wataru with his booster seat.
"I'm happy to be of use to you."
"Yeah, thanks." Fae looks back at him, smiling softly. "I feel rude to drag you from the after party to take us home."
"It's no problem, really." Masaomi gets in, starting the engine. "Wataru is tired too, he's almost asleep." He turns back to prove his point, the youngest already nodding off.
"Still, it's not going to stop me from feeling guilty." She clips in her belt before leaning forward to remove her heels. "Hey, Hikaru asked me something that's been on my mind all day." Masaomi hums in acknowledgement as he pulls out of his parking spot. "I don't mean to be rude, but you're... 29? How come you aren't married? Do you have plans?"
"Oh," Masaomi says in surprise, his eyes widening in shock at the question. Fae adjusts her position to look at him, wanting to read his expression as he couldn't take his eyes off the road. "Our dad," his face tightens, "Wataru has forgotten what he looks like. Even I would have trouble if it weren't for the wedding photos." Masaomi turns sullen, a lone sigh, dropping his shoulders.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Fae adjusts herself, somehow feeling like she was touching a sensitive subject. "But, pictures are nice. They... remind us. They act as a stimulus and remind us of, not exactly better times..." Fae purses her lips, head falling forward as she tries to think of what to add
"Simpler times." He finishes, smiling softly. "Ou dad died when Wataru was really small, but Miwa said something to me - although I barely remember - and I decided to become Wataru's father figure."
"That's so kind." Fae smiles, wanting to comfort Masaomi. Yet, she doesn't know how. "You put your own life on hold to look after your family... that's really sweet."
"I would do anything for my family." Masaomi looks up in the rearview mirror, his gaze softening as he watches over Wataru. "I don't want him to be lonely."
"With a family your size, I don't see how he can be lonely." Fae jokes, smiling. "I... it's nice to know you aren't alone." Fae giggles, a smile not leaving her face. "It's so fluffy? I get this happy swell from knowing this family is so... joint."
"You come from a small family, but with us Asahina's you'll never get a moment of peace."
"I hope not." Fae nods to herself. "I hate silences. It just reminds me of how lonely life can be. But now, I can just leave my room, and I'll be bombarded by someone. It's nice."
"I promise not to leave you," Masaomi smiles at her. He reaches over to her, patting her arm as he stops at a red light. "You won't be lonely any more."
"Oh, a-ah. That's nice." Fae sits up straighter, her hands folding in her lap. Masaomi looks at her, his face flushing.
"Because we're family now. I can't leave my new little sister to fend for herself." Masaomi laughs, looking out the window.
"Masaomi," Fae says softly. He looks at her, his eyes glaze. "The traffic light." She points, looking at him timidly. Masaomi looks up to see its green, and he clears his throat before grabbing the clutch and going forward.
