Chapter 3: Training
P.O.V. Third
Taiyang sighed as he walked out of his room, he had been awoken by the sound of the children that at the moment were playing in the living room. Taiyang sighed hearing this and began to stretch in an attempt to wake himself up. As he did he began to think about what day it was and smiled. "Yang," Taiyang said gaining his daughter's attention.
"Go outside, and do your warm-ups I'll be there in a minute," Taiyang said as he looked at the child.
"Alright," Yang said as she stood up and walked out of the building. Ruby's eyes lit up seeing this and she turned to King and began to tug on his sleeve.
"Come on, come on, let's go watch," Ruby said as she looked at the male in front of her. King a bit confused nodded hearing this and stood up walking with Ruby. King followed Ruby outside where he saw King doing a few stretches. Ruby then sat down on a nearby stump that seemed to be made specifically so Ruby could watch Yang training.
King sat beside Ruby and began to watch Yang do a few warmups. They didn't seem that hard but even so King found himself a bit amazed by watching the female. He had never watched anyone else train before so it thought it was nice. King and Ruby both watched as Yang started to do a few uppercuts on the dummies in front of her.
As they did Taiyang began to notice that Yang seemed to be putting in a small bit more effort than usual. He could only guess that this was because she had two people watching her instead of just her sister. As yang continued to train Taiyang walked over to the two the were sitting on the stump. "What do you think?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the two in front of him.
Qrow had of course told him that King seemed have some form of training. Even if it was just basics then he thought he should be able to relate to what Yang was doing. "She's awesome!" Ruby said as she continued to look at her sister.
"Yeah Yang's so cool," King said as he stared at the blonde female in front of him. Is this how Amalia felt whenever she watched him train?
"Well why don't you give it a shot?" Taiyang offered as he looked at the white haired male.
"Wh-what?" King asked nervously as he looked at the older male in front of him.
"Why don't you try, after all you're around the same age as Yang, so I'm sure you can handle it," Taiyang said as he looked at the child in front of him.
"I don't know," King said as he looked away.
"You know, laziness is the mother of all bad habits," Taiyang said as he looked down at the child.
"Yes, but at the end of the day, she is a mother and we should respect her," King said trying to think of any excuse to not train. He knew he could handle the relatively simple tasks that Yang was doing, however he never cared for training so if it all possible he'd rather avoid doing so.
"Aw come on, it's easy," Yang said as she looked at the male trying to get him to join as well. King seemed to become more nervous hearing this and looked at Yang a bit surprised by her suggestion. King tried to think of something he could say however he wasn't able to some up with anything.
"Alright," King said with a slightly defeated sigh.
"Great, it's not that bad I promise," Taiyang said as he walked over to one of the several training dummies. "Do you think you can take the same stance Yang had?" Taiyang said as he looked at the child and King nodded as he tried to mimic Yang's stance. Taiyang noticed that it was a bit off but he didn't think it was a big deal. After all beginner's usually had trouble with things like that.
"It's easy just keep your eyes on the target," Taiyang said as he looked at King. The white haired male nodded hearing this and stared at the dummy in front of him a few seconds before slowly leaning back and pushing his head forward and placing his head on the dummy. "Um . . . what are you doing?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the child a bit confused.
"Keeping my eyes on the target," King said as he continued to stare at the piece of wood intensely. This action of his caused Taiyang to sigh a bit disappointed while it cause Yang to chuckle slightly. Taiyang once again looked at the male and sighed, it seemed like what the male had told Qrow had been a bit misleading. That or he had just lied about what King was capable of.
"Um . . . That's very good. Now try hitting the target," Taiyang said as he looked at the male. King smiled hearing this and reached to the side hitting the target keeping his head firmly in place. Taiyang sighed seeing this and looked at the male. "A bit harder this time," Taiyang said as he looked at the male in front of him. King sighed hearing this knowing he'd have to take this seriously and moved his head off the target before looking at it.
King stared at the target for a few moments before he went to punch it as hard as he could. When he did Taiyang and the others heard a slight thud against the dummy and Taiyang smiled. It wasn't as loud as Yang's but it was still something. However his smile quickly faded when he saw that King was wincing from the pain. "O-Ow," King said as he slowly pulled his hand away shaking slightly.
When he did Taiyang saw that his knuckles were now bleeding and rushed over to his side. "Are you okay?" Taiyang asked as he looked at his hand. For him this was more than enough proof that King hadn't spent any time training. He felt a small amount of frustration build inside of him seeing this. Part of it was anger for the man that had lied to him, the other was annoyance that he had let king hurt himself like this.
"Come on King, let's get this taken care of," Taiyang said as he began to walk into the house with King. The male nodded hearing this and followed Taiyang into the house still holding his hand from the pain. Ruby and Yang followed the male inside seeing the blood that was on his hand.
"Is he going to be okay?" Ruby asked as she looked at her father.
"Yeah, he'll be fine," Taiyang said as he walked into the house. The three then made their way to the living room. When they did Taiyang led King over to the couch and stood up. "Stay here," Taiyang said as he began to walk to his room. When he did he saw Summer looking at him.
"Is something wrong? I was watching you from the window, but when I looked back I saw you were gone," Summer said as she looked at the male a bit concerned.
"Yeah, King hurt his hand," Taiyang said as he looked in the small cabinet where they kept most of their medical supplies.
"What!? What happened? Is he okay?" Summer asked as she looked at the blonde in front of her.
"Yeah, it's nothing that some dust soaked bandages won't fix. I'd imagine that it probably hurts a bit, but he'll be fine after a few hours," Taiyang said as he reached for some bandages before pouring a small amount of dust on it. Taiyang walked out of the room with Summer following behind him. He didn't want King to bleed more than he already had. When the two walked out they began to make their way towards the living room where Ruby and Yang were looking at King's hand.
Taiyang sighed seeing this and kneeled down in front of King. "I'm sorry," Taiyang said as he took King's hand and began to wrap the bandage around it. "I shouldn't have forced you to do something you didn't want to," Taiyang said as he looked at the male in front of him.
"I-It's okay," King said with a slight wince as Taiyang continued to wrap the bandage around the male's hand. Taiyang smiled hearing this and as he finished he looked at King and gave him a kind smile. As he did however a strange thought passed his mind and he gained a rather complex expression.
"Hey Ruby want to go to the park with King again?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the female in front of him. Ruby's face lit up hearing this and she nodded rather excitedly. "Okay, then," Taiyang began as he turned look at King. "I think you're old enough to go by yourself. You remember how to get there right?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the male in front of him.
Summer gained a rather confused expression hearing this and looked at her husband ready to speak out however before she could say a single word Taiyang decided to cut her off. "Summer, can you go to our room? I'd like to talk to you in private for a bit," Taiyang said as he turned to looked at the female.
Summer looked at him a bit confused for a moment before she sighed and nodded and began to make her way towards the room that they shared. "King, I want you to have her back before it get's to late. I also want you to take good care of her. That means protecting her from bullies or anyone else that might hurt her. Do you think you can do that King?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the male in front of him.
Taiyang was trying his best to use both a voice and a stare that made it clear that Taiyang was really depending on him for some reason. King nodded seeing this and Taiyang smiled. "Alright then have fun," Taiyang said as he looked at the two in front of him. The blonde then rose to his full height and turned to look at Yang. "Go outside and continue your warm-ups I'll be there in a minute," Taiyang said as he looked at his daughter.
Yang nodded hearing this and walked out of the building. Taiyang then began to walk to the room where Summer was standing. Her arms were currently crossed and she was giving him a stare which Taiyang had become rather familiar with. A stare that meant she wanted him to explain himself. Taiyang sighed seeing this and looked at the female in front of him.
"Summer I-" Taiyang began only for Summer to cut him off.
"What do you think you're doing? Do you really think that King can find his way to the park? What if it rains and they get sick because we weren't there? Or even worse if they get hurt and we're not around?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang sighed hearing this. That was more or less the response he had been expecting.
"Summer listen, I'm sure they'll be fine. After all King made his way from Trigelph to Patch. I know that's not exactly when you're following a path but if he can do that then I'm sure he can make it to the park and then find his way back," Taiyang said as he looked at the female before he shook his head. "Anyway that's not the point," Taiyang said as he looked at the female trying to continue his reason for sending the two away.
"It's just . . . I was thinking . . . maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to have King around, you know?" Taiyang said as he looked at Summer in front of him. Summer's eyes widened hearing this and walked over to him. She didn't need to ask him what he was talking about. She honestly thought that it was fairly obvious what he meant.
"Are you sure?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang sighed hearing this and looked at the female.
"I don't know, that's why I sent them to the park. I wanted to talk to you first. After all I didn't want to take a new kid in without consulting you. That would just be . . . idiotic of me," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him.
"I guess that makes sense, but why send them away? There had to be a better option than making them leave the house. I'm sure that if we asked Ruby to show King her comics she would have been so busy with that, that King wouldn't have noticed," Summer said as she looked at the blonde male in front of her.
"I know," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him. "But even then I still wasn't sure about it. I wanted to be sure that we were making the right decision. After all he has dreams about Salem. For all we know the kind and caring person King's shown us is nothing more than a complete façade. I just . . . I wanted to be sure was all," Taiyang said as he looked at Summer, who at this point was beginning to become genuinely confused as to what Taiyang had planned.
"So what's the plan then?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang took another deep breath hearing this. He knew this was going to be the part that Summer didn't like, or rather the part she hated the most, since she probably didn't like the plan at all.
"I was going to call Qrow and have him pretend to be an attacker," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him.
"What?!" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her.
"He wasn't going to hurt them! I know Qrow's . . . complicated, but there's no way he'd hurt them. He loves Ruby and Yang! Even I know that much," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him. Summer continued to glare at him and deciding it would be best for his health to keep explaining Taiyang continued.
"It wasn't going to be a hard test, I didn't even want him to have a weapon on him. I just wanted to see if King would be willing to defend them. After all if he's going to be their brother then he need to know at least that much," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him. Summer continued to glare at him causing him to tense up slightly.
After several moments of silence passed Summer sighed and dropped her glare. "Fine," Summer said as she looked at the male in front of him. "So, what are you going to tell Qrow?" Summer asked as she looked at her husband.
"About that," Taiyang said a bit sheepishly as he held up his scroll. "Could you tell him? I feel like he'll say yes quicker if you're the one asking," Taiyang said with a nervous smile. Summer sighed hearing this and took the scroll from Taiyang. When she did she began to call Qrow and after a few short moments of silence they heard a beep.
"Hello?" Qrow said in a groggy voice.
"Hey Qrow it's me," Summer said as she looked at Taiyang trying to make him feel guilty for what he was doing.
"Summer? What do you want? Do you have any idea what time it is?" Qrow asked clearly not happy about the fact that he had been woken up early.
"It's one-thirty," Summer said as she looked at the male.
"Exactly! I have another three hours before the nearest . . . the kids can't hear me right?" Qrow asked from the other end.
"No, they're all busy. Anyway Qrow I have a favor to ask you," Summer said as she looked at the male front of her.
"Really?" Qrow asked before he let out a sigh implying that he had just rose from whatever he had either been sitting or laying on. "Well then, ask away. I'm sure it shouldn't be to much trouble. Even for a dusty old crow like me," Qrow said from the other end of the scroll. Summer sighed hearing this and looked at the male in front of her.
"Meet me in patch, in front of hunters haven. It'll be easier to explain in person," Summer said as she looked at Taiyang.
"Um . . . alright? I'll be there as soon as I can," Qrow said before the two heard a click and Summer ended her end of the conversation as well.
"I'll be back later," Summer said as she began to make her way towards the door.
"You didn't tell him," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him.
"Of course not, he wouldn't agree to something like that over a scroll-call, but if I have him in the middle of town he'll say yes," Summer said as she began to make her way to the doorway.
"What makes you so sure about that?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the female.
"He's going to be expecting something so he'll be ready to actually be there. That and I know how Qrow thinks he won't want to waste a trip so he'll resist at first but I'm sure if I push hard enough he'll eventually buckle," Summer said as she looked at Taiyang. The blonde gave her a rather apologetic smile seeing her at the door.
"Again, sorry about this," Taiyang said as he looked at the female in front of him.
"I know you are," Summer said with a sigh before she left the house and began to make her way across the small island. Unknown to the female however Dillon was currently getting ready to walk out of his house so that he could once again meet his friends. However he stopped hearing a loud siren. An alarm that several people had put up in case a large number of Grimm were to come for some unknown reason.
As far as he was concerned it just sort of sat in the town square. Sure the humans and Faunus didn't get along that well but he never thought they'd put off enough negativity to attract Grimm. Dillon turned to look at his parents that had already gathered a few things as well as some weapons that they had around the house just in case something like this were to ever happen. "Mom, dad," Dillon began as he looked at the two elder figures in front of him.
"Let's go sweetie," His mother said as she walked over to the door.
"I'm scared," Dillon said as he looked at his mother.
"I know sweetie, but we need to go before it's to late," The female said as she walked over to her child. "Is that everything?" She asked as she looked at her husband.
"No, but that's all we have time for," the male said as he hugged his wife. Dillon then watched a bit confused as they hugged each other.
"I love you," The male said as he looked at his wife.
"I love you too," The female said repeating his action. Dillon was a bit confused seeing this. It sounded like they were saying goodbye for some reason.
"We're going to be okay . . . Right?" Dillon asked as he looked at the two in front of him. When he said this the two looked at him and tried to give him a reassuring smile but they failed and only ended up looking nervous as they did. The male then reached down and picked up his son before they began to run down the streets.
Dillon could hear some screaming coming from all directions as well as several roars and growls of all different kinds. Dillon closed his eyes hearing this hoping that this was all some type of bad dream and felt fear began to build up in him as he and his parents continued to run down the streets.
As Dillon watched as they left their home the place he had grown up in, and the town lived in all his life, the friends that he had made, and the other villagers faces he had come to know. As he watched them all slowly fade from sight Dillon began to wonder if any others would come to suffer the same fate as him, and just what he could do to try and prevent that from happening.
Unknown to the male however a certain female had just finished explaining her husbands plan to her friend. Qrow sighed hearing this and pinched the ridge of his nose as he looked at the hooded figure in front of him. "Are you sure about this?" Qrow asked as he looked at the male in front of him earning a sigh from Summer.
"I know, I think it's a bit over the top too, but Tai wants to be sure before we make the offer," Summer said as she looked at the male in front of him. Qrow sighed as he put up his hood and began to make his way towards the town from before. When he arrived he saw that King and Ruby were both still playing in the park. Seeing this Qrow began to hide and wait for the two to leave.
Qrow didn't have to wait long as they decided to start walking home as they noticed it was beginning to become a little dark. As they began to walk down the streets Qrow waited until Ruby was out of King's sight and quickly darted towards the female grabbing her before placing a hand over her mouth and dashing back into a nearby alleyway. King almost immediately noticed that Ruby had went missing and began to look around.
Seeing this Qrow kicked a rock creating some noise. After all this was only a test to see how brave King was so at the moment Qrow wanted King to find him. King of course heard the rock and without hesitation walked over to the alleyway and saw a hooded figure holding Ruby. "Listen kid, I don't want any trouble," Qrow said as he looked at the kid in front of him. King seemed to be listen to the male hearing this.
"Do you know why I'm doing this?" Qrow asked as he looked at the male in front of him.
"Not really," King answered honestly as he looked at the male in front of him. Qrow smiled seeing this, he wasn't doing anything stupid so at least he wasn't trying to get Ruby killed.
"Just do what I say and I won't hurt the girl," Qrow said as he looked at the male in front of him. King nodded hearing this and looked at the male waiting for some form of instruction. "Good now just come closer and I won't hurt the girl," Qrow said as he looked at the male in front of him. King nodded hearing this and continued to walk towards him. As he approached the male King continued to grow a bit nervous.
However Qrow began to question what he was doing when he felt a small amount of liquid hit his hand as well hear a slightly muffled cry. Realizing that Ruby had began to cry Qrow looked down at the male and then heard laughing. Qrow then looked up at King, and gritted his teeth slightly. "What's so funny?" Qrow asked as he looked at the male in front of him.
"Nothing really," King said as he looked at the male in front of him. "It's just, people laugh in situations like this right?" King asked as he looked at the male in front of him. "Grahadens said that people might come after me but . . . I never expected you all to be so heartless," King said as he continued to smile sadly. "Believe it or not, even someone like me is capable of laughing and getting angry," King said as he looked at the male in front of him.
"That's why I'm only going to say this once," King said as he looked up at the male in front of him. "Stop hurting my friend, you mongrel!" King said with more than a small amount of malice as he looked at the male in front of him. Qrow smiled slightly hearing this, at least he had some backbone.
"Kid listen, I don't think you're in the position to-" Qrow began only to stop when heard a sound the mirrors cracks spreading across ice. A few brief moments after this sound was heard King dashed towards him. Qrow reacted on instinct and raised a hand to stop King's attack. However when he did he noticed that King hit a lot hard than what he had been expecting. In fact if he had hit any hard Qrow was certain that King would have broke his arm.
Qrow watched as King landed on the ground and reached for him. Deciding that this would probably be a good time to end the test Qrow reached up to stop his attack a dagger appeared in front of King's hand and his stabbed it through Qrow's hand. Qrow let out a cry of pain feeling this and jumped back looking at the dagger that was now stuck in his hand. Qrow gritted his teeth as he reached up to pull out the blade.
'Of course,' Qrow thought as he pulled out the blade. 'With my luck the kid would be an amazing fighter,' Qrow thought as he looked at the male in front of him. King moved back so that he was in front of Ruby and several weapons of all types began to appear around him. Qrow smiled seeing this and turned and began to run away. King was about to chase after him however before he could the hood dropped to the ground and a bird began to fly away.
King stared at the bird in slight disbelief at what he had just seen and watched as the bird began to fly off into the distance. "Did he just . . . what?" King asked clearly confused by what he had just seen. King was more than confused seeing this but quickly shook these thoughts from his mind as he turned to look at Ruby who was crying. "Are you okay?" King asked as he looked at the female in front of him. After he asked this Ruby, like the first time they had met dashed forward to hug him in her crying state. King smiled slightly feeling this and returned her hug. "Come on, let's go home,"
