Chapter 2: Fun

P.O.V. Third

Summer smiled as she looked at the three in front of her. It warmed her heart to see how happy Ruby seemed to be with her new friend. Ruby tended to have some trouble making new friends because of how far away they lived from the nearby town, and the few times that Ruby did go with them Ruby seemed to have trouble speaking to the other kids. "Dinner's ready," Summer said as she looked at the three in front of her.

Summer watched as Ruby and Yang both stood up immediately and began to make their way to the dining room, with King trailing behind them. Summer smiled as she watched the three sit by the table. Summer smiled as she walked over to the table and began to eat with the three. "This is great mom," Ruby said with a smile.

"Yeah, it's way better than dad's cooking," Yang said as she looked at the female in front of her.

"Hey I'm not that bad," Taiyang said as he looked at his daughter. King chuckled hearing this and this continued to eat the food that he had been given. After they had finished Summer watched as Ruby and Yang began to walk to the living room. King stood up just a few seconds later and Summer expected him to follow them however to her surprise King gathered the dishes and began to make his way to the sink.

It was clear that he planned on washing them but Summer sighed and walked over to him placing her hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, I'll take care of that sweetie. Why don't you go play with Ruby and Yang," Summer said as he looked at the male in front of her. King seemed a bit surprised to hear this and stared at her a few moments a bit dumbfound.

"Are you sure?" King asked as he looked at the female only to receive a nod in return. "Um . . . okay," King said a bit unsure as he began to walk towards the living room where Ruby and Yang where playing. Summer sighed seeing this and began to wash the dishes in front of her. As she did she heard some footsteps approaching from behind her. When she turned she saw Taiyang staring at her.

Summer smiled seeing the male and continued to do the dishes in front of her. "It's always so nice to have you back," Taiyang said as he hugged the female from behind.

"Flatterer," Summer said with a smile as she looked at the male beside her. Taiyang sighed hearing this and looked at the female with a smile before his look became one of concern.

"So did Qrow find out anything?" Taiyang asked as he looked at Summer.

"Doesn't he always?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang smiled hearing this and looked at the female in front of him. "He said that King came from Trigelph like he said and that he was apparently raised by an old hermit. While he seemed to be kind, Qrow said it doesn't seem like he's going to let King return," Summer said with a rather somber expression.

"I see," Taiyang said with a sigh as he began to look at the ceiling. "So what should we do?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the female in front of him.

"I don't think there's any harm letting him stay here a while. After all he's the first real friend that Ruby's had," Summer said as she finished washing the dishes. Taiyang nodded hearing this and watched as Summer began to make her way towards the hallway to see the three playing one of the games that Yang had bought. Summer smiled as she watched the three in front of her.

After some time had passed Summer sighed and walked into the living room. "Alright I think that's enough for the day," Summer said as she looked at the three in front of her. "I think it's time that we all went to bed," Summer said as she looked at the children in front of her.

"Yes mommy," Ruby said as she stopped playing and began to walk to her room.

"Sure thing mom," Yang said as she quickly saved the game and stood up making her way to her room. King nodded hearing this and stopped what he was doing, after all he had been losing the majority of the time he had been playing anyway. King was about to make his way to the door so that he could leave however before he could he saw Taiyang walk out of his room with a cover and pillow.

"Sorry King, but you'll be sleeping on the couch tonight. We don't exactly have a spare bedroom so I hope you don't mind," Taiyang said as he tossed the pillow to one of the sides and placed the cover on the couch gently. King seemed a bit surprised and shook his head.

"No it's fine," King said as he began to make his way towards the couch and began to lay down on it. It didn't take him long to drift off to sleep and he stayed like that for several hours. King's rather peaceful sleep was brought to a seemingly abrupt end as he slowly began to wake up.

King groaned as he slowly leaned up with a headache. When King looked around he saw that he was in a long hallway. A bit confused King began to walk down the halls. He didn't recognize the area that he was in. He continued to walk until he came to a rather large room, it had a long table in the center with several chairs on either side of it as well as what appeared to be a throne at the end.

"King," He heard a familiar voice call out to him.

"Grahadens?" King questioned as he turned around only to once again see a long hall. However this time the hall turned dark. A bit nervous King began to walk down the halls. As he did he felt a gust of wind and saw the hallway disappear. King suddenly felt sick as he found himself surround by the dark void.

"King," He heard someone once again say however this time it sounded more like two voice instead of one. When he turned to see who was calling out to him. However like before he didn't see anything. King once again began to walk towards the voice and began to hear something from behind him. When he turned he saw something looked a bit different from the rest of the void he was in. It looked like shadows were raising off the ground.

King then saw a figure slowly begin to form in front of him. A woman that he didn't recognize slowly began to twist and contort her body in an unnatural manner in front of him. King watched in horror as the figure finally seemed to stop only to let out a loud terrifying scream. King gasped as his eyes opened and he shot up from the couch he was sleeping on and looked around the room.

When he did he noticed a few figures looking at him clearly confused by his sudden action. "Is everything alright King?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Y-yeah," King said as he sighed. "J-just a bad dream," King said as he tried to rid himself of what he had just saw. King then took notice of the new figure that he hadn't seen yet standing in front of him. "W-who are you?" King asked as he looked at the male in front of him.

"Name's Qrow," The male said as he looked at the male in front of him.

"O-oh," King said as he looked at the male in front of him before extending his hand. "I-it's nice to meet you," King said as he looked at the male. Qrow sighed hearing this and shook the male's hand.

"So King," Qrow began as he looked at the male in front of him. "Want to tell us about that dream? It seemed to have you pretty startled, so maybe talking about it will help," Qrow asked as he looked at the male in front of him.

"It's nothing really," King said with a smile trying to dismiss the matter. "I've had it as long as I can remember, so it doesn't really bother me that much," King said as he looked at the two in front of him.

"Well talking about things always makes me feel better. Plus if you tell us then we might be able to help," Summer said as she looked at the male with a kind and gentle smile. King still a bit nervous nod hearing this and looked at the two in front of him.

"It's different every time, I remember one time I was in a town that had a bunch of people in it, and there was another time where I was at the castle in Trigelph, but it always ends the same way. There's this weird girl who comes to scream at me," King said trying to describe his reoccurring dream to the best of his ability.

"May want to get used to that last part kid," Qrow said as he looked at the male in front of him only to get smacked on the back of the head by Summer. "Ow!" Qrow said as reeled back slightly.

"So King, have you ever seen this girl before?" Summer asked as she looked at King only to receive a nod from the male in front of her.

"No, just in my dreams," King said as he looked at the female in front of him.

"What do you mean by she looks weird?" Summer asked as she looked at the male in front of her.

"She just looks weird, I've never seen anyone else that looks like her before," King said as he looked at the female in front of him.

"Do you mean she has animal ears?" Summer asked as she looked at the child in front of her. She knew there was chance that the man he had stayed with could have been racist and she didn't want those bad habit rubbing off on Ruby or Yang if that were the case, and she was a bit relieved when King shook his head.

"No I've seen Faunus before but . . . she's different from them too," King said as he thought about how she looked. "She looks kind of sick," King said as he looked at the two in front of him. "I mean her sick is white, like really white, kind of like snow actually. Her hair's the same color and she also has weird lines on her skin. Her eyes also glow kind of like a grimm's and the white part of her eyes is black, oh she also has this weird black diamond on her forehead" King said trying describe the female to the best of his ability.

As he continued however Qrow took a more serious look and looked at the male in front of him. He had been treating this problem like anyone else would have, after all it was just supposed to be a simple kid's nightmare. It wasn't uncommon for kids his age to experience nightmares after all. However the more King described the figure from his dreams the more this girl began to sound like Salem.

"King," Qrow asked as he looked at the child in front of him. "Could you go wake Ruby up for us?" Qrow asked as he looked at the child in front of him.

"Sure!" King said with a smile as he began to walk away. It was more than obvious that King would rather not talk about the figure from his dreams. When Qrow was sure that King could no longer hear them he looked at Summer.

"There's no way that was a coincidence right?" Qrow asked as he looked at Summer.

"Not a chance he described Salem perfectly," Summer said as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Yeah I didn't think that was the case either. Not with my luck at least," Qrow said as he looked at the female in front of him. Summer nodded hearing this and looked at Taiyang as he walked out of his room.

"Okay, so did you wake King yet or am I going to have to?" Taiyang asked as he looked at the two in front of him.

"Tai, you and Summer will have to watch over the kids on your own for today," Qrow said as he looked at the male in front of him before he turned and began to walk away.

"Where are you going?" Taiyang asked as he looked at Qrow a bit confused. He knew that he had bad luck but at the same time Taiyang was more than confident that the three of them could handle anything his semblance did.

"I'm going to go pay a certain old man a visit," Qrow said as he opened the door.

"Qrow wait I'm coming too," Summer said as she looked at the male.

"What?" Taiyang asked both confused and clearly disappointed.

"Qrow wait outside, I'll be there in a minute," Summer said as she watched Qrow walk out of the room. Summer sighed seeing this and turned to look at Taiyang.

"We're going to talk to the old man that Qrow found. We need to ask him a few more questions about King," Summer said as she looked at the male.

"Why?" Taiyang asked clearly confused about the situation. Summer looked down the halls hearing this clearly a bit stressed about what she was about to say. However before she said it out loud she wanted to make sure that none of the other kids could hear her. Seeing that none of them were around Summer looked at Taiyang and leaned in close trying to stay a bit quiet.

"King's been having dreams about Salem," Summer said in a hushed tone as she looked at the male.

"A-Are you sure?" Taiyang asked as he looked at Summer.

"He described her perfectly, so we're going to go ask the old man if he knew about it. I doubt he knows who Salem is but even so we need to make sure that he didn't deliberately lie to us," Summer said as she looked at the male in front of her.

Taiyang nodded hearing this and looked at the female. "Okay, I know Ruby and Yang are going to be upset that you're leaving so soon, but I understand why you have to do it," Taiyang said as he looked at Summer. Seeing that he was a bit disappointed as well Summer smiled and leaned forward to kiss Taiyang on his cheek.

"Don't worry," Summer said as she gave him a reassuring smile. "If we hurry then I can be back before dinner," Summer said with a smile as she looked at the male. Taiyang smiled hearing this and nodded as he watched her walk out of the house. Taiyang let a sad smile cross his face as he watched the two begin to fade from sight.

"Ready!" A voice chimed from behind him. When he turned he saw Ruby with a rather enthusiastic look on her face. However this look was quickly replaced with confusion as Ruby looked around. "Dad, where's mommy?" Ruby asked as she looked at the male in front of her.

Taiyang sighed hearing this and looked at the child in front of him. "She had to go with Uncle Qrow for a bit," Taiyang said as she looked at the child in front of him.

"Oh," Ruby said a bit disappointed as she looked down. "Th-that's okay! I still have you and Yang! Oh, and King!" Ruby said as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang smiled hearing this and gave her a reassuring smile.

"Don't worry she won't be gone long this time. She said she'll be back before dinner," Taiyang said with a smile as he looked at the child in front of him. Ruby smiled hearing this and she looked at her father.

"Okay!" Ruby said energetically now appearing to be in a much better mood. Taiyang smiled as he watched her walk or rather run out of the room holding her arms out as if she were flying. Taiyang smiled seeing this and shut the door after both Yang and King had left as well.

However unknown to the four using her semblance Summer had already arrived at the house that Qrow had told her about. Summer knocked on the door and waited for a response. After a few more knocks and no answer Summer reached for the handle and easily opened the door. She was a bit surprised by the fact the door wasn't locked but at the moment she didn't have time to think about it.

"Hello?" Summer called out as she opened the door. "Is anyone here?" Summer asked as she continued to walk through the house. She eventually came to a small room and saw the elderly male she had been looking for on his bed. Summer thought about what she was going to next and readied herself for a worst case scenario.

After all she may not have broke into the male's house but she had still entered it without permission. Summer placed her hand on her weapon in case things turned sour and slowly approached the male. "Hello?" Summer asked as she looked at the male that was still laying in his bed.

"Sir we have a few questions for you," Summer said as she looked at the male in front of her. Summer then reached forward to shake the male gently. "Sir," she said as she looked at the male. "Sir," Summer said as she began to shake him a bit more aggressively. However that was when Summer noticed that he was a bit more pale than usual.

Summer then reached up to touch the male and she sighed, it was just as she thought. He was far colder than he should have been. Summer sighed seeing this and began to make her way out of the house shutting the door behind her. "So what did you find?" Qrow asked as he looked at Summer.

"He's dead," Summer said rather bluntly as she looked at the male in front of her. Qrow sighed hearing this and looked up at the male.

"Why am I not surprised?" Qrow asked a bit rhetorically. The male then sighed and began to make his way towards the town that he knew was nearby. "I'll alert the local huntsmen of his unfortunate passing," Qrow said as he made his way towards the town. Summer sighed hearing this and began to make her way back to her home feeling a bit defeated by the fact he had passed away before she could speak to him.

As she did she thought about King and just what kind of connection he had to Salem if any at all. It was possible that his dreams were just dreams. Summer found it very unlikely that, that would be the case. However at the moment it was the only answer that she had. However unknown to Summer as she began to make her way home the others had already made their way to the park and were now all playing.

Ruby and King were currently playing together in a sandbox. When Ruby finished building her castle she destroyed it without a second thought and smiled. "Yay!" She said excitedly as she tossed her hands into the air. King chuckled slightly seeing this and smiled as he looked at Ruby. "Hey King," Ruby said as she got much closer to King.

"Want to explore the forest?" Ruby asked as she looked at the male in front of him.

"The forest?" King asked as he looked at the thick set of woods that Ruby was referring too. He seemed a bit unsure remembering what had happened to her the day prior. Then again she had him with her this time so maybe it'd be okay.

"Okay," King said as he looked at Ruby with a smile. When he said this the two stood up and began to make their way towards the forest. Unfortunately for them Taiyang hadn't been paying attention when they began to walk towards the woods, since he had been busy watching Yang as she tried to fight a few kids that were trying to bully her, a mistake on their part really.

However after Taiyang turned back to look for Ruby and King he couldn't find them. Taiyang stood up from the bench he had been sitting on seeing this and looked at Yang. "Try not to wonder off to far," Taiyang said as he began to walk towards the forest. He thought that Ruby would have been a bit discourage about entering the forest after what happened last time.

However it seemed as if that wasn't the case and as soon as Taiyang entered the forest he heard some giggling that clearly belonged to Ruby. Taiyang felt more than a bit relieved hearing this seeing that Ruby didn't get lost again and began to follow Ruby's occasional giggles. It took him roughly five minutes to locate the source of the sound since it seemed like she kept moving to a new location each time she giggled.

Unknown to him King and Ruby still a bit away from his current location. "Careful," King said a bit nervous as he looked at the female in front of him. At the moment she was rather high up on a tree branch sitting peacefully kicking her legs back and forth.

"It's fine I do this all the time," Ruby said as she looked down at the male in front of her. However as if to prove King's point Ruby lost her balance and began to fall towards the ground. Seeing this King rushed forward in an attempt to catch her however he failed and she landed in a nearby bush.

"Are you okay?" King asked as he looked at the child in front of him.

"Y-yeah," Ruby said with a slight smile as she began to make her way out of the bush. King smiled slightly seeing this, however his smile faded as he heard a low growl around him. He wasn't sure where the sound had come from but looked down at Ruby who seemed to be a bit more frightened than him.

"I think we should head back," King said as he looked at Ruby causing her to nod and hide behind him a bit scared of what she had just heard. King then began to walk back from where they came however as he did he saw two red eyes in front of him. King stopped seeing this and moved in front of Ruby taking a slightly defensive stance towards the creature in front of him. It didn't take long for the beowolf to respond as it lunged towards him and let out a rather loud roar.

It then dashed towards them and lunged at them trying to kill them relatively quickly. However before it could reach them a spear shot down and stopped it. The spear had pierced one of it's hands pinning it to the ground. The creature let out a cry of pain as another followed it and pierced it's other hand. King from his time with Grahadens responded almost instinctively and sent several more spears at it forcing it to turn to dust.

When it did the spears followed the creatures example and vanished as well. "Ruby!" King heard a familiar voice call out. When he turned he saw Taiyang come into sight. He sighed relieved seeing the two. "Come on let's go home, it's starting to get late," Taiyang said as he looked at the two trying to stay calm when the reality of the situation was that he wanted to leave since he had heard the cry of a creature of Grimm just a few moments ago.

Ruby smile happily as she looked at the male in front of her. Taiyang returned her smile seeing this and began to walk with the two children. "We just need to stop by the park for a moment to Find Yang and then we'll go home," Taiyang said as he looked at the two in front of him.

"Okay!" Ruby chimed happily as the three began to make their way home.
