Chapter 5
Blaza pushed the door open, stepping into the outside of his room.
Socks came out of the room next to his and walked over. "Need help?" He offered.
"I'm fine. I can walk." Blaza retorted, determined not to seem helpless.
"I don't mean walking, I mean with finding the meeting room." Socks said, rolling his eyes.
"Oh." Blaza could feel his cheeks redden. "Yeah, I do need help with that. Thanks."
He followed Socks for a few minutes before stepping in to the largest room Blaza knew of, with a table at each corner, plus one in the middle.
At the middle table, everyone was beginning to sit down at the... plastic? Blaza wasn't sure what the material was, but it reminded him of Plastic.
He and Socks approached the table and sat down. Blaza could see many people turn to him questionably, and Blaza had to admit if he were in their shoes, he'd probably be confused too. Yesterday he was in bed unable to stand.
"Aight, everyone's here?" Laff said from Blazas left. After seeing everyone else at the table nod, Blaza nodded as well.
"The first order a' business is tha' Blaza is feelin better, and will start doing his own tasks again." Laff filed through some papers and slid one across the table.
Blaza grabbed it, reading it over silently.
Admin: Swipe Card.
Electrical: Divert Power to O2
Reactor: Unlock Manifolds.
He wasn't able to finish reading, as Laff had continued, talking about parts of the ship needing repairing and whatnot.
Blaza listened, but didn't really know what Laff was talking about. Something to do with wires in electrical? There were a lot of words that Blaza couldn't make sense of.
"Don't worry." Socks whispered to him. "No one knows what he's saying except Tenson. He's kind of the mechanic, I guess?" Blaza couldn't help but release a small, relieved sigh, glad that he wasn't the only one completely lost.
"Meeting dismissed." Laff said at last, standing up and headed toward a large window at one side of the room.
Blaza looked over his list again, wondering how he'd actually find these locations.
"I can show you where to go if you want." Socks said, the only one aside from Blaza who hadn't walked off. "Yeah, thanks." Blaza said, glad to have help.
He followed Socks down one of three hallways, and then turned left into what looked like some sort of high-tech gaming room, just with a more serious vibe.
"Over here is the card swipe." Socks said, walking over to the green, somewhat glowing table in the center of the room.
Socks pulled a wallet out from a pocket on his spacesuit, and from that wallet he pulled a card.
He swiped the card in some sort of swipe-card-thing and moved aside so Blaza could give it a try.
"I, uh, I don't have a card." Blaza stammered.
"What?" Socks said. "Did you lose it?" "I... I don't know. I don't remember having a card in the first place." Blaza answered.
"Can I just swipe yours?"
"That doesn't work."
"Why not?"
"It's an ID Thing. Like, you can't use someone else's ticket to board a plane. It's the same with cards."
"Then how do I get a card?"
"I dunno. We left Earth with them, they're made on Earth. I don't know if we can get another one."
Blaza sighed. "So... where are the other tasks?" "There's a button on your watch that'll tell you." Socks said, pointing at his own.
He pressed a button on the side, and a holographic map appeared, showing yellow markers where Blaza assumed his tasks were.
He lifted his own watch, and saw the same button on the side. Blaza intended to reach for it, but his arm didn't cooperate.
"Oh." Socks said, turning his gaze to Blazas bad arm.
"I have an idea." He said. "Do you mind..?" The spaceman said, gesturing towards Blazas watch.
"Not at all." Blaza said, unsure of what Socks was doing, but still trusting of him. Socks was really the only person he considered a friend, as he was pretty much the only person who had actually been nice to him for as far back as he remembered. The only person who wasn't dead, anyway.
Socks slid the watch off Blazas wrist and loosened the band, then sliding it onto the cast on Blazas left arm.
"Good idea!" Blaza smiled, using his good arm to press the button on the side. Socks returned the smile as another holographic map, similar to Socks', was cast out of his watch.
Blaza could see the yellow markers, along with another marker that he assumed was himself.
This'll make everything way easier, Blaza thought.
"You want some company, or...?" Socks said, looking to his feet.
"Yeah. That'd be pretty nice, actually." Blaza replied sheepishly.
Socks showed him how each Task worked, and thankfully none of them were too complex except for start reactor.
"It takes so long!" Blaza complained. "Ugh, I know. It's the worst task in the history of tasks." Socks agreed.
After about an hour, both Blaza and Socks had finished their tasks.
Just as Blaza finished fueling the engines, Sirens blared overhead, signaling the Oxygen had been sabotaged.
"I'll get the one in O2, can you do the one in admin?" Socks half-yelled over the blaring sirens. "Yeah!" Blaza said, running toward admin.
He knew the ship better now, and was pretty confident he could make it to admin ok.
A little later, The oxygen had been fixed, but not by Blaza.
He may or may not have ended up in electrical instead of admin.
He'd been rushing, and instead of checking his map, he'd just gone off of instinct.
Which had failed him.
Hearing a hissing from the back of elec, Blaza stepped around to see what was causing the sound.
He saw a figure pulling wires out from the back, near what Blaza remembered to be the distributor.
The figure turned to him, and Blaza took in its appearance.
It wasn't a silhouette like he'd thought, it was pure black. From its back arose large, dripping tentacles, as if they were made of liquid. He could make out smaller tentacles, and even beak-like things coming out from the rest of it.
Where it's eyes should be were red, glowing orbs, eying Blaza with a bloodthirsty look.
"Ah, hello there. It's Blaza, isn't it?" The creature said, it's voice sounding as if 50 different people were talking.
It's voice was everywhere and nowhere, threatening and yet calm. He hated it.
"W-who are y-you?" Blaza stammered, stepping back.
"We've met. Just not in this form." The creatures voice continued to send chills down Blazas spine.
"W-wh... what do you want?"
"I think you know. You've experienced my work more closely then anyone else on the ship."
"K-kill me then. If I k-know so m-much, then w-why would you leave m-me alive?"
"I need you, Blaza. The rest of these crewmates are merely pawns. You, on the other hand, are the king. The queens, rooks, knights... they're all irrelevant."
The way the creature treated this like a game both angered Blaza and made him fear it more. "T-they aren't just a p-part of your g-game. They're r-real people." Blaza stammered defensively.
The creature let out a chuckle that made Blaza want to die on the spot. He'd rather be anywhere else but here, speaking with this... this thing.
"Blaza, Blaza, Blaza... you should look behind you. In about three seconds, this conversation will reach an... unfortunately abrupt end."
Blaza tensed. What was behind him?
"Blaza...?" He heard a voice behind him. Blaza froze. Who was there? His mind was racing too fast to recognize the voice.
"Blaza?!?" Another voice said. The creature laughed, and pulled out more wires, but from a different place.
The lights flickered and went down, and all Blaza could hear was screaming and another sound that reminded him of that zombie screaming meme.
He whirled around, losing his balance and ending up on the ground. He backed up, scooting backwards until he hit a wall.
He could hear flesh ripping, followed by screams and gurgling.
He willed with all his might for this to end. Fear gripped him like a massive claw, refusing to let go.
Blaza whimpered, curling into a ball and closing his eyes tightly. All he could hear was screaming, alien shrieking, and his own whimpering.
His head throbbed. He wanted to be back in his room, or hanging out with Socks, or just... anywhere but here.
