Chapter One

I groan as my alarm goes off. I roll over and turn it off, before sitting up and staring around my room blankly. In the next room over, I hear my twin sister, Charlie, doing the same as me. I grab my walkman and headphones before playing some music. I wasn't exactly sure what song it was, since I was too tired and depressed to care, but it sounded something like Under Pressure by Queen.

I get out of bed, and get dressed, just throwing on some random clothes, like usual, before going to brush my teeth. I do that without a care in the world, and soon, I'm ready for the day. I don't know exactly what I'm going to do, but hopefully, it involves getting enough money to buy a car. Though I doubt that's going to happen.

I suppose I should introduce myself. Name's Emily. Emily Watson. I'm the twin sister of Charlie Watson. It's been an interesting life so far, and hopefully it will get better. Recently my dad died of a heart attack. Me and Charlie haven't been great. Well, okay, his death wasn't that recent, maybe a year ago or so, but it still hurts. Especially when everyone around us seems to have moved on. It kinda sucks but at least Charlie and I have each other.

I walk out of my room to see Charlie asking Mom where breakfast was. I gave a small smile when Charlie was directed to the cupboards. I follow her over to the cupboards, and grab a bowl, and some cereal, ignoring the milk.

I don't like milk.

Eating my plain cereal quickly, I then rushed out the door to head to work. I didnt' really want to go but I needed the money and I was close to getting enough money to buy a car that actually worked. I know Charlie and Dad like to work on the Corvette in the garage but... I'm not a mechanic. At least I know where I can go if my car needs some fixing! Well... if I get a car. I shake my head and grab my moped and head towards work. I work at a churro stand with some guy named Memo. He's been trying to get me to introduce him to my sister.

I keep refusing.

He keeps asking.

I tell him that he needs to work up the nerve to just go say hi to her.

And repeat.

That's what usually happens when we're not selling churros. Oh well. I smile as I get to the churro stand, and see Memo already there. He smiles at me, and I pull on the outfit for the churro stand before grabbing a hair net and pulling my messy brown hair into it.

Me and Charlie look very similar. That's what you get for being identical twins. Sometimes it gets annoying but when you only got each other, you appreciate what you have.

Memo finishes selling a churro before looking at the stand across from us to see Charlie working there. He takes a deep breath, looks at me and goes to try and say hi, but she kinda rejects him by saying not right now.

He sighs and comes back to the churro stand.

"Well, that didn't work. I tried", he says, shrugging.

"Try again later", I suggested.

"I don't know..." he mutters.

"Eh, sure she's busy now, but she won't be busy all the time", I say with a shrug.

Memo sighs and shakes his head. "It would be easier if you just introduced me to her."

"I know and that's why I don't do it. Because you gotta toughen up", I say as I sell a churro to some random kid.

"Emily..." Memo whines. "Please....?"

"No", I say firmly. He sighs and leaves it alone for the rest of the day. Doesn't mean he doesn't bug me. Oh well.

Soon, my shift ended, as well as Memo's.

"See you tomorrow, Emily!" Memo cries out.

"Yep", I say unenthusiastically. I check how much I got paid today. $20. I sigh. I still need another $50 dollars before I'm able to buy the cheapest car out there.

I sigh before going over to where Charlie was standing, waiting for me to get off work.

"Em, can you come with me to Uncle Hank's? I might need some help collecting parts for my car", she asks.

"Sure, Char. Besides... I don't really want to go back home", I murmur.

"Same", Charlie says. She doesn't smile as much anymore. Not since Dad died. I don't smile much either but I smile more than Charlie does.

We hop on our mopeds, and head over to Uncle Hank's where we go scrounging for car parts. Well, Charlie does. I just sit and keep her company. That or go look around at what random junk Uncle Hank has.

Today, I didn't go look around. I kept Charlie company. But what surprised me was when she hopped out of the boat she was pulling parts out of and the boats tipped over to pull at a tarp covering a car. Charlie goes to look at it, and I follow. It was a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. I stare it in surprise before noticing another tarp covered car nearby. I pull the cover off it to reveal a Maserati Merak. I think it was made in 1972. It definitely looked it. But it was a beautiful silver when you looked past the dust and the faint rust.

"You haven't moved in ages, have you, darling?" I whisper to it, feeling slightly stupid but... oh well. I like to talk to my cars.

I hear a radio playing and look over at Charlie who was in the car, with the radio emitting some strange noise. I notice all the bees near her, and know that if she doesn't move soon, she's gonna get stung.

"Stop her", a faint voice said. I looked around, not knowing who said it but I listened to the voice, and looked back at Charlie.

"Hey, Char. You got a bunch a bees hanging out around your head", I say loud enough for Charlie to hear me.

That's when she notice the bees and started to wave them away before getting out of the car and closing the door.

I smile softly at the Merak and shake my head at it.

"You keep watching over your friend, alright? I'm going to go talk to Uncle Hank and see what he's got to say about you guys", I whisper before smiling.

"Hey, Char! Are you going to keep looking for parts?"

She nods and I shoot her a smile. She looks at me weirdly but I speak again.

"Alright, well, I'm going to go talk to Uncle Hank! I'll meet you over there", I say.

She nods before walking further into the junkyard and I go back the way we came to go talk to Uncle Hank.

"Hey, Uncle Hank", I say softly, gaining his attention.

"Yeah, kid?" he asks.

"How much for the Merak and Beetle? I wanna surprise Charlie tomorrow with a birthday gift. And get myself a little something too, because I know my mom and stepdad will get both of us something that we won't like", I say softly.

Uncle Hank smiles. "They're yours, kid. Save your money. Just come get them tomorrow, okay?"

I grin. "Thanks Uncle Hank!" I go to leave before remembering something. "Oh wait! Charlie will try to make a deal with you, and let her explain the deal first, before shooting her hopes down and then bring them back up by saying the Beetle is hers! I'll get her to come here tomorrow, if she doesn't come here herself!"

Uncle Hank chuckles. "Alright, kid. Now go wait outside for your sister, and let me watch in peace. I gotta know what happens to Alf."

I chuckle slightly and shake my head before going outside and leaning against the side of the wall for Charlie.

A few minutes later, she comes out with her crate full of parts. Well, not full. The bottom was covered, but that's about it.

When we get home, Charlie instantly goes to the garage to work on the Corvette. Meanwhile, I got interrupt the show my family is watching.

"I bought a car", I say quietly. My mom's head instantly perks up.

"With what money?"

"I didn't have to pay for it. Uncle Hank is giving it to me for my birthday. He's giving Charlie one too, though she doesn't know it yet. We're going to get them tomorrow", I say softly.

My mom's face was filled with worry before she sighs. "Well, as long as you drive safely and responsibly."

"Will do, Mom", I say with a small smile before going to my room, and falling asleep with dreams of driving that silver Maserati Merak.
