INT. CRESTVIEW HALLWAY – DAY

Ariella and Mae are at their lockers. Mae's face is hidden in hers.

ARIELLA

I cannot wait for the Halloween Ball. My princess costume is going to sweep everyone off their feet.

She shows Mae a picture of her pink, feathery dress on her phone.

ARIELLA (CONT'D)

Get it? Cause it's made out of feathers.

Mae pops her head out of her locker wearing a goofy, bunny mask.

ARIELLA

And yours is cute...In a creepy way.

Discouraged, Mae takes off the mask and puts it away.

MAE

The ball is only a few hours away and I still don't have a costume.

ARIELLA

We can go to the costume shop after school. (re: bunny mask) Where you can also get your money back.

Ryan enters and greets a friend at his locker. Ariella sighs.

ARIELLA (CONT'D)

Isn't Ryan the cutest boy you've ever seen.

Ryan looks in her direction. Smiles. Ariella smiles back.

MAE

Why don't you just go over there and talk to him?

Ryan walks over.

MAE (CONT'D)

Or he could come to you.

RYAN

Hey, Ariella. Are you going to the Halloween Ball?

ARIELLA

Am I going to the ball? Of course, you meant me. Who else?

MAE

Just nod your head.

Ariella nods.

RYAN

Cool. Maybe you could save me a dance.

Ariella nods. Ryan smiles and exits. Ariella covers her face with Mae's mask and shrieks.

Caleb enters in what looks like a pirate costume.

MAE

Isn't it a little too early to be wearing your costume?

CALEB

What costume?

He moves to his locker and opens it. An envelope falls out. He picks it up.

CALEB

(reading) Mysterious admirer?

Ariella and Mae join him as he opens the envelope.

CALEB (CONT'D)

(reading) "If you want to discover your secret admirer, come to the ball as a jungle explorer."

MAE

Who do you think it's from?

CALEB

I don't have a clue.

ARIELLA

There has to be someone you know who's interested in all that.

She gestures toward his getup.

CALEB

No, she didn't leave any clues.

MAE

They'll probably be at the ball. Leading to a girl who's odder than you are.

CALEB

She'd be the love of my life.

He looks inside his locker.

CALEB (CONT'D)

Aw, man. My glasses broke. Oh well.

He puts on a pair of shades with one missing lens, which looks suspiciously like a pirate patch, closes his locker and exits.

Down the hall, Torin meets up with Danny at his locker. It's filled with boxes of pumpkin-shaped candy bars.

TORIN

What are those?

DANNY

Pumpkin Munchkins. The guy who made them asked me to hand them out during Halloween for promotion. Want one?

TORIN

Can't. I have to look flawless for the costume contest.

DANNY

Do you ever do anything just for fun?

TORIN

Who has time for fun when you're trying to win?

Danny watches a football player smash pumpkins with his head.

DANNY

That guy.

They cringe as another pumpkin bursts into pieces over the footballer's helmet.
