Twas envy filled the heart of man
Never seeing his own hand
and greed that wanted a fuller plate
So each would come to debate

Fate sat near to hear their plea
as each in turn made decree
Then listened and adjudicated
between their cases as they waited

The ruling dealt to their dismay
was that each in turn could take away
their own desire that very day
but the other would get twice as they

Greed called out for one room of gold
and to his sorrow envy was given two
Envy was jealous of Greed's one room
and thought his own desire through

'Take one of my very eyes!' he declared
and now in half-sight he stared
This was his jealous heart's design
So Greed would be left completely blind
