Dancing In The Rain - George Russell

It was a very gloomy Autumn night and the stars were nowhere to be seen. Rain pattered on the windshield of your car as you drove home from work.

Perfect timing.

You had hoped to be able to sit out in the garden and stare at the stars for a bit before heading off to bed as it was your one of your favourite things to do to relax but clearly the weather said otherwise.

You were already in a sour mood caused by your absolute dirtbag of a boss and the rain didn't exactly lift your spirits.

It was a long drive home and luck really wasn't on your side today so of course you got stuck in traffic.

Great. Just great.

You sighed in exhaustion. All you wanted to do right now was get into your comfiest pyjamas, climb into bed and cuddle with your beloved boyfriend George.

You and George had been in a committed relationship for about 2 years now and those years have possibly been the best years of your life. He's your rock, your other half, your soulmate. Even the thought of him waiting at home for you brought a smile to your face.

You thought about giving him a call just to hear his voice but then you remembered you managed to drop your phone in the toilet earlier today so that wasn't going to happen.

You slumped back in your seat with a huff of annoyance and prepared for a very long drive home.

1 hour and 30 minutes later...

You spotted the familiar sight of your neighbourhood and sighed in relief.

Finally.

You drove along the quiet street, glancing at all the houses as you passed. It was very late and the rain had now turned into a heavy shower so most of the lights in the houses were off.

All but one.

The glow of light coming from your porch caught your eye, you furrowed your brow. You had assumed that George would be asleep by now.

You pulled up in the driveway to find him sat on the doorstep, completely soaked from the rain.

Without thinking, you opened the car door and immediately made your way over to him.

“What are you doing out here?” You asked, slightly raising your voice so he could hear you in the rain.

He looked up at you with a small smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes.

Clearly you weren't the only one who had a bad day.

“Well I came out here to get something from the garage, but I left my keys in the kitchen and ended up locking myself out of the house so... Here I am.” He let out a small chuckle.

You sat down on the doorstep next to him.

“Sounds like my kind of luck right about now.”

“Tough day?”

“You could say that.” You sighed tiredly.

You placed your hand on his and he gently interlaced your fingers together, softly rubbing his thumb over your knuckles.

The two of you sat there in a comfortable silence for a bit, just enjoying each other's company.

You rested your head on his damp shoulder, while closing your eyes just to savour the moment...
He kissed you lovingly on the forehead and rested his head on top of yours.

After a minute or two, you stuck your hand out from underneath the shelter of your doorstep to feel how heavy the rain was.

It had lightened since you arrived home but it was still there nonetheless.

As you held your hand out, you let out a small chuckle with a smile on your face.

“What are you laughing about?” George turned to face you.

“Do you remember when we went to my sister's wedding last year and it started absolutely chucking it down at the reception? I remember we were outside at the time and you were desperately trying to shield me with your jacket as I legged it back to the hall.” You could barely contain your laughter now.

“Oh my god...” He laughed as he remembered. “I can't believe it's been a year since then.”

“Time really flies doesn't it?”

“It really does...” He smiled softly at you.

“Remember the song that was playing just a mere five minutes after we got soaked?” You asked.

“How could I forget?”

Wonderful Tonight. Always a classic.”

You began to hum the song under your breath when suddenly George stood up next to you.

“What are you-”

“Dance with me.” He stated, cutting you off.

“What? But it's stil raining!” You laughed.

“Nothing we can't handle.” He grinned at you and extended his hand for you to take it.

You smiled back as you thought,
This, this is why I love him.

You took his hand and he pulled you up from the step.

He led you out onto the road while making sure there were definitely no cars coming (although considering it was almost midnight already I don't think that would be much of a problem).

As soon as you got to the middle of the road, George was spinning you around while wrapping his arms around your waist.

You laughed in delight as he twirled you under his arm and dipped you gracefully.

“Where did you even learn to dance like this?” You giggled.

“YouTube.” He said proudly which made you burst out laughing.

He chuckled with you as he swayed to the imaginary music.

You wrapped your arms around his neck and swayed with him while softly humming the song Wonderful Tonight.

He looked deeply into your eyes.
“You know... I honestly don't know how you do it.”

“Do what?” You asked confused.

“How you always manage to cheer me up and make me feel comfortable no matter how bad of a day I've had.”

Your heart melted at his words.

“Well I could say the exact same for you.” You smiled softly staring into his eyes.

"I love you so much y/n.” He said and pressed his lips firmly onto yours.
After 2 years of being together, his kisses still felt magical.

“I love you so much too.” You replied.

You embraced him tightly, never wanting to let go.
