➳ Chapter 7

Ilseul sighed and tilted his head as he looked at Dawson's very broken looking ankle. She sniffed and hiccuped as she tried to stop herself crying in front of the non empathetic looking doctor. That was until Ilseul touched it and made her yelp, following a fresh wave of salty tears.

"I'll fix something up, but I've got to get it into the right position." He stated, hovering his hands over the girls bent and very tender ankle. Dawon flinched at his movements which made him feel a little bad for her.

"Can't she use my crystal?" Seungcheol suggested and went to take his necklace off.

"No! Don't!" Ilseul yelled quickly and reached up at him. Seungcheol froze and looked down at him with wide eyes. "If you take it off your wounds will reopen again. They've not fully healed have they?" He asked and the stocky guy shook his head. "Thought not. Well, if you take it off then your wounds will reopen and I don't think you want that." He stated.

Seungcheol let go of the leather string, making the necklace fall into its original position. He didn't want the lashes in his back to reopen. It took a day for the bleeding to stop altogether, and these days there was no time to bleed.

Ilseul turned to Dawon again and hovered his hands over her ankle, making her flinch again. Choa sighed and shifted her weight onto one of her legs.

"Don't you have anaesthetic or something? That's gonna be agonising for her." She suggested. Ilseul blinked and stopped himself from snapping at her. Instead he took a deep breath and looked up as the questioning woman.

"I do, but I'm saving it for the most extreme cases. It's ingredients are extremely rare and can't be found just anywhere. So if you wouldn't mind I'm going to get this over and done with so we can all progress." He said in a falsely calm voice. Choa just shook her head, there's no use arguing with him.

"Get it over and done with. I can't stand it." Dawon lied. She didn't want this to happen but it's better than being left behind. She scrunched her face up and turned her head away. "Go. Do it now." She ordered whilst she was feeling brave and confident. "Don't even count down, I-" She started to ramble but yelled in agony instead.

Ilseul had grabbed the ankle and manoeuvred it into the correct position while she was talking. As soon as her ankle was in place he silently reached into his bag and pulled out a clear crystal.

Dawon started to silently cry again as she stared down at her ankle, feeling a little bit sorry for herself. She bit her thick bottom lip to stop her hiccups from being loud and annoying.

She watched as Ilseul attached the clear crystal to a piece of tiny leather sting, flicking it to make sure it stayed on. Satisfied it was sturdy, he reached down and tied it around the girls ankle. He softly smiled to himself as he decided to tie it into a cute bow for her, just to make her feel a little better.

"There. Now rest it. You should be able to walk on it tomorrow, with maybe a limp. In two days it will be fully healed though." He stated as he stood up, brushing the dirt off his clothes.

"T-thanks." Dawon hiccuped. Minho crouched down next tobher and wiped a warm tear from her cheek. Dawon smiled at him which he returned, warmly. She suddenly looked at him properly and she frowned, her mouth falling open. "Y-your eyes..." she stuttered, making Minho chuckle. "Why are they..?"

"Cool right?" He said, opening his eyes wider. Dawon stared in awe at the man's light blue eyes that looked to be faintly glowing.

"Why do that d-do that?" She asked. At this point most of the group had now noticed and were just as curious.

"It was a gift for helping someone." He said and looked down at his hands, embarrassed by everyone's eyes on his.

"What? A gift?" Minha asked. Minho nodded and laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck with his hand.

"Who and how?" Seungcheol asked, confused about how this even works. Minho looked up at him then nodded towards Ilseul who was attaching more clear healing crystals to leather strings. He glanced up and groaned at the shocked faces looking at him.

"Don't even think about it." He stated, looking back at the two materials in his hands. "You gotta save my life before you get 'gifts' like that." He muttered.

"Do they just glow?" Dawon asked Minho.

"It helps me to see in the dark. When I was out on the ship, I was always on the night shifts. Saved me carrying a lantern around when hauling in fish." He explained. "And it helps when I'm on my own ship and I'm trying to get places at night without people noticing as I don't need lights." He added.

"Whoa! That's so cool!" She exclaimed excitedly, seemingly forgetting about the pain in her ankle.

"I wonder who else he's given these 'gifts' to." Hyeri commented and Ilseul scoffed.

"If that's a hint it's not working darlin'." He laughed as he focused on his crystals.

Minho didn't like the tension so he decided to change the topic. He grabbed his bag and pulled out a rolled up piece of paper.

"Hold this for me please." He asked Dawon, who took it and looked at it even though it was too dark to read.

Minho took it from her light grasp as he put his bag away. Straightening the paper out, he grabbed small rocks and placed them on the corners so the sheet would stay flat. His eyes scanned the map on the ground in front of him and pin pointed where they were.

"The next camp is miles out." He stated and Han Sung finally payed attention to the conversation. "If I'm right, we should still be pretty close to the other camp and we don't want them catching up." He looked up at Han Sung who he could see was looking back at him with a serious stare.

"Let's keep moving then. It should be light soon and we need a decent place to rest." Han Sung said, and walked towards the group. Most groaned at is words. "Walk for longer, rest for longer. Simple." He stated.

Minho stood up and placed the map back in his bag. He looked down and saw Dawon looking worried and he felt bad. Taking his bag off he handed it to Dawon who took it mindlessly.

"Carry this for me love, and I'll carry you." He said in a light voice. Dawon smiled and nodded at the well built man. Crouching down again he helped Dawon so he was giving her a piggy back, two backpacks strapped onto her back and the handle of Minho's machete grazing her good foot.

Everyone followed the direction the blue eyed man was walking in but soon overtook him and his addition as they were slower.

"Nothing like an moonlit stroll through the terrifying forests." Kai Wen said sarcastically. Kai Ling rolled her eyes and hit him on the arm, making him whinge and grab his arm dramatically. "Sorry for trying to make this more bearable." He grumbled to himself.

________

The early morning sun shone down and turned the pitch back forest, to a dull light grey. The forest seemed void of colour as everything seemed to be either grey, brown, or black.

The group trudged on the soft leaves, each step getting slower and slower.

Choa sighed and looked down at her feet as they pressed the forest mush down underneath her. She kicked a small patch of leaves every other step and lolled her head as she was bored.

Groaning as she looked at Han Sung who kept  walking in front of her, the idea of stopping not looking like it will happen anytime soon. She glanced around and looked at the foggy forest they were in.

"Whoa..." she mumbled to herself as she saw an unusual mark on the ground. She looked behind her and saw that she and Han Sung were ahead of the others. Deciding it would be okay to steer off a little, she headed towards the mark. She crouched down and stared at the shape. "Oh great..." she groaned.

She looked up and looked in the direction the now identified footprint would have gone in. All she saw was Han Sung walking into the fog and look as if he was slowly being engulfed by the soft cloud.

Looking back down at the track she noticed another track ahead of the one she was crouched next to. Her whole body tenses as she recognised the prints. Ilseul saw and stopped, he could tell what she was about to do and he reached into his satchel.

"You gonna go?" He asked her quietly, his hand still in his satchel, and his other on his own crystal.

"Yep." She muttered, her eyes never leaving the direction she was about to go in.

"We'll find you." He said before pulling his hand out and threw light grey powder that looked like ash in Choa's direction. She was briefly covered in the ash like substance until it disappeared into thin air.

She knew what to do and began sprinting into the fog. The light grey crystal around her own neck started to light up dimly, and every step she took left a light grey glowing footprint.

Everyone watched as the Wildling ran at an outstanding speed and left her own luminous tracks.

"What the fuck is in that satchel of yours?" Minah joked, reaching for her friends bag. Ilseul frowned and jerked away from her reaching hand, making her laugh as he looked like a kicked puppy.

"Don't-" he started to protest as she went to grab it again. He lifted it up and clutched it to his built chest. "Go near it again and you'll be seeing the devil." He threatened. Minah however laughed at his empty threats and carried on walking now that she had a trail to follow.

"Lets go help the little Wilding." She chuckled to herself.

"She's a Wildling?" Seungcheol asked to Hyeri. She glanced at him and sighed, putting a hand on his shoulder briefly.

"I forget how new you are sometimes."

_________

Choa sprinted in the direction of the tracks and into the thick cloud of fog. She passed Han Sung quickly and kept her eyes on the look out for any other prints.

She paused and crouched down as the tracks were starting to lose their pattern. When a definite print could be seen she reached over and gently rested her fingertips over it. Smiling to herself she watched as it's tracks started to faintly glow a light grey. Not wasting time she followed the trail quickly.

Her mind was racing with ideas on how to tackle the beast once she tracked it down, since it is in the area they're heading towards. Her thoughts however stopped and disappeared when the track suddenly stopped.

Halting and breathing heavily to catch her breath, she stared at the ground where the tracks should be. However her eyes caught onto another set, that looked completely different.

"Oh my god..." she muttered, crouching down and touching the monstrous footprint. The prints started to glow and she hesitantly started to follow them, hoping the others would find her quickly. She didn't want to face this monster alone.

Whilst running she saw how a trail formed, presumably from a pack of animals following the same prints as her. She recognised the tracks however and sighed in relief slightly. It had been too long since she saw wolves.

A faint howling echoed in the distance and it only motivated the blonde to run faster. Pushing branches and clusters of leaves out the way, she finally saw what she had been tracking in front of her. She stopped and her mouth fell open.

The giant wolves were growing and circling the    monster in a more-than-aggressive way. Choa's eyes fell on the monster and she was tempted to just run back and suggest an alternative route. She shook those thoughts from her head however as she remembered this is her job. This is what sets her apart from the others, and she had to show she deserved a place in this group.

Her eyes fell on the monster she'd only had the displeasure of witnessing once in her life. The other times she's only heard and read stories about people's encounters with it. The first time she had help and other Wildning's with her. She'd never tackled this alone before.

The 10ft animal lowered its giant head. Its red, almost black eyes, staring down each wolf that bared their teeth in its direction. A sharp hiss left its mouth followed by a long forked tongue. It's dragon like head moved quickly at the slightest of sounds.

It's long and muscled body was hunched over so it was nearer the ground and positioned so striking and attacking was easier.

Choa's eyes followed the movements and took in the strange anatomy of it.

It's body was structured the same of a Komodo Dragon. Dark and dull green scales covered most of its body. The parts where the scales failed to cover, short tuffs of dark brown fur stuck out. It's tail was thick and covered only in scales, the skin at the end being the toughest as it was with that, they mostly used to attack. The nails on its feet were long and razor sharp, but were only used when there was no other option as it easily lost its balance on less than 4 legs. The mouth of the monster was lined with long yet few dagger-like teeth. They were often used when attacking.

Feeing hopelessly outnumbered and vulnerable she decided to at least get the wolves on her side, which she knew would be unbelievably easy for her.

Grabbing a small whistle she created herself out of the pocket on her pants, she placed it between her lips and softly blew on it. The wolf closest to her turned and glared at her, before turning properly and walked her way. It's teeth bared and it's stance low and aggressive, it stalked over to her.

She held her hand out and looked the beast in it's eyes, not breaking contact. Blowing again on the whistle she sounded a short melody. The wolf slowly lost its threatening stance and when it reached Choa, it gladly licked her hand. She smiled and stroked the beasts black fur.

The wolf was almost as tall as she was yet she wasn't intimidated. She sounded another melody and the wolf turned around to look at the monster again.

Choa grabbed a tuff of the wolves thick dark fur and was about to lift herself onto its back when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned and saw the rest of her group running towards her.

Quickly pressing her finger to her lips that still had the whistle between them, the hoard of rebels stopped and looked at her with wide eyes.

"Don't let it kill you. Aim for its eyes and legs." She whispered before turning back and pulled herself onto the giant wolves back.

Everyone stared at the scene in awe. They snapped out of it however when they then saw the giant half lizard, half bear-like creature the Wilding was heading towards.

"Oh my god I've never seen one in real life before." Kai Wen said in utter shock. Everyone looked at him in question and he picked up on it. "That," he started, nodding at the monster. "Can kill us all with one good swing of its tail." He explained. "It can probably smell us from here." He added.

"What the fuck is it?" Minah asked, watching as her fellow rebel rode towards it on the back of a fucking wolf.

"Shouldn't you know? You hunt animals for a living." Hyeri asked, not meaning to sound rude.

"I hunt animals you can eat. The biggest one being a bear. Giant fucking furry lizards aren't really on the menu." She shot back, taking Hyeri's question the wrong way.

Hyeri opened her mouth to explain she didn't mean to be rude, but the sound of growing and howls followed by a loud hissing took everyone's attention.

Everyone watched as one of the groups members joined the pack that had viciously started attacking the reptile-like monster.

Their eyes followed one of the wolves as the monster lunged at it and sunk its long teeth into the beast, shaking it violently before throwing it in their direction.

The giant wolfs body skidded across the forest floor and stopped in front of them, the trail of its blood was bright and painted the ground.

"Well fuck." Kai Ling stated
