Ghost Sense
After Ezra had officially joined the crew of the Ghost his halfa ghost powers were easier to control. Kanan had promised to train him the ways of the Jedi. Depa called it Living Force training. Ezra just called it Jedi training while the training he did with Depa was ghost training. He choose to keep ghost training a secret from the others.
The problem was there was still a few slips here and there. The Ghost crew was starting to suspect something was up. Depa would sometimes have to wake Ezra up in the cargo hold after he would switch forms while sleeping and pass through everything underneath him. Other times he would absentmindedly walk through doors without opening them on missions or just pop up out of nowhere in front of one of them. Ezra quickly learned that Kanan couldn't, see, sense, or hear him while he was in ghost form. This meant that there were times during Ezra's ghost training that Kanan would be looking for him the entire time. The Jedi failed to make a schedule of when exactly Jedi lessons were so often they would clash.
"Ezra, you need to tell him." Depa had said one day.
"I know I should. I'm just scared that they will treat me differently once they know. I don't know how they are going to take it, especially Kanan. Imagine finding out that your padawan is half dead and that's why he randomly disappears completely every once in while." Ezra explained.
"Ezra, I know it's hard. You can't keep putting off ghost training though. Kanan needs to know you have that ability. Not just for planning his lessons around mine, but so he can grow in his powers so that he can hear and see you." Depa explained.
"He knows something's up. He keeps trying to get me to talk about what's going on." Ezra said. Then he heard a knock on the door.
"Ezra are you in there? We have Jedi training." Kanan said.
"Sorry Depa. We can continue this later. I need to work on controlling my living powers as well." Ezra said before changing back into his human form. "Yeah Kanan, I'll be right out."
"Met me up on the roof." Kanan replied.
"Ezra, be careful. If you fall don't go ghost unless you have to. Let Kanan save you." Depa said.
"What makes you think I'm going to fall?" Ezra asked.
"I know this training he's working with you on. Most students fail the first time. The roof of a ship in orbit isn't the safest place to do it. He has to be testing himself to make sure he can keep you safe even in the most dangerous positions." Depa said.
"What makes you think that?" Ezra asked.
"I trained him this stuff remember. I know my padawan. Just trust me." Depa replied.
Later on Ezra was upside down trying to lift stuff with the force. He was struggling.
"You need to stay focused." Kanan scolded him.
"I'm trying." Ezra replied.
"Do or do not. There is no try." Kanan said.
"You're not master Yoda." Depa said to herself hearing him say this.
"What does that even mean? How can you do something if you don't try it first?" Ezra asked.
"Hum, that sounds like a question you would have come up with Caleb." Depa said.
"To be honest I never really understood that either." Kanan admitted.
"Yeah I was wondering why you asked me that same question. I'd imagine that Yoda's answer was just as confusing as the statement." Depa said as she commutative on the lesson.
"Why don't we try something easier." Kanan suggested.
He handed Ezra his lightsaber. Ezra ignited it nearly stabbing Kanan in the process. Kanan jumped back just barely avoiding falling off the ship himself. Then he went back to where the droid was.
"Now Chopper is going to throw things at you. I want you to block and dodge them." Kanan said.
"And here's where someone is probably going to fall." Depa mumbled. "Caleb I thought I trained you better."
The trash started flying in Ezra's direction. Ezra hit a few. Chopper increased the speed of his throws. Ezra started to struggle. He felt cold and his breath started to show. He was in danger of falling and his ghost senses were trying to save him.
"Don't go ghost!" Depa warned him.
Just then a milk carton hit Ezra in the chest. He dropped the lightsaber and fell of the ship.
"I knew that was going to happen." Depa said.
"EZRA!" Kanan screamed. He called his lightsaber to him as he ran to the edge of the ship looking over to watch the kid fall.
Depa prayed that Ezra didn't instinctively didn't go ghost as he fell.
Kanan comm the others to let them know what was going on. He worked out a plan to save Ezra. Depa flew down to check on Ezra.
"I'm going to die!" Ezra screamed as he saw the ground approaching quickly. He was about to go ghost when he felt something grab him.
"Ezra don't freak out on my. Kanan is using the force to pull you up. If you go ghost he will lose it. I know you can just fly back up but Kanan needs to know he can do this." Depa said as she saw the kid floating up still in human form.
"This feels weird in human form." Ezra said.
"I know." Depa said. It wasn't long before he was back level with the Ghost ship. The ramp was opened and Kanan and Zeb stood on it. Kanan had one arm out and looked as if he was struggling to hold on to something heavy. Zeb stretched both arms out in Ezra's direction.
"Zeb, hurry I can't hold him much longer." Kanan cried.
"I've got him." Zeb yelled as Ezra grabbed his wrist. Kanan sighed. Ezra felt the invisible hold disappear and fell.
"Hold on kid." Zeb said pulling him up.
"Like I would let go." Ezra replied. Sure he's ghost instincts might be telling him to, but he still had human instincts and they screamed don't let go. As his feet touch the ramp he ran to Kanan.
"You lost focus." Kanan scolded.
"It's hard to focus when you're falling to your death." Ezra replied. He added the word again to the end.
"You wouldn't have fallen if you were focused." Kanan responded.
"Well that's why you're supposed to be teaching me." Ezra snapped back.
"It's hard to teach." Kanan said with a sigh. Then left.
"He means it's hard to teach you." Zeb said.
"Don't listen to him. It was hard to teach him and I had help. Caleb's teaching you all alone." Depa said.
As soon as Zeb was gone Ezra changed into ghost form. It was often the quickest and easiest way to get some time to himself.
"Your right he's not ready for you to tell him." Depa said.
"I should probably head up and change back before he gets worried." Ezra said. He floated through the ceiling into the upper levels. No one was around so he changed back in the hallway before entering the common room where everyone was. They were all watching the holonet. The broadcast was interrupted. The others explained that it was an informant trying to get out information. This information was on a supposedly living Jedi being held by the empire.
"Are we going to take the mission?" Hera asked Kanan.
"She'd be a great assist and would make a good master for Ezra." Kanan replied.
Ezra's eyes got big hearing that.
"He's going to dump me on someone else." The halfa said to Depa. "I can't trust him with my secret."
"Ezra don't be so sure. There's something off about this information." Depa said. "I'm going to check it out with the cosmic ghost council."
During the rescue mission Ezra kept trying to prove himself to Kanan. He didn't want Kanan to just leave him with this stranger they were trying to recuse.
As they got closer to the jedi's cell Ezra kept feeling colder and colder. Once they got to the cell Ezra could see his breath. His ghost senses were going crazy. He shivered.
"You cold?" Kanan asked.
"Kinda." Ezra answered truthfully. "Is she really here?"
"I sense her but something's off." Kanan replied.
She's dead that's why my ghost senses are going crazy Ezra thought to himself.
They opened the cell. The Jedi appeared before them. Then she got up and walked into a coffin.
"Ezra, she's dead but never showed up in front of the cosmic ghost council." Depa said.
"Kanan what's going on?" Ezra asked. "Since when can Kanan see and sense ghost?" He asked Depa.
"He can't." Depa said.
"What never seen a ghost before? Figured you would fall for our little trap." A new voice said from behind.
Ezra could see his breath again.
"We're dealing with a rogue ghost and an inquisitor." Depa said.
"That's just great. I can't go ghost without Kanan getting worried." Ezra replied.
The dark halfa went on talking but Ezra didn't pay attention. He just watched as the dark halfa and Kanan fought.
"I don't have much use for you Jedi, but as for your padawan. The empire could only benefit from someone with his talents." The inquisitor said as he overpowered Kanan and sent dim flying upwards. "It would seem master Billaba taught you poorly. That or never finished your training."
The inquisitor walked up to Ezra.
"I could train you much better than he could. All you have to do is join the empire. We can train you in both halves of your powers much better then either of your masters." The inquisitor said.
"Join the emperor. Never." Ezra said.
"Then unfortunately I'll have to kill you." The dark side user said.
"Think again. I'm better trained then you think." Ezra said as a white ring formed around his waist. It split apart running up both halves of him changing him into his ghost form. To the inquisitor Ezra's eyes turned green, his blue black hair went white, and his orange flight suit turned black. To Kanan who was just opening his eyes, his padawan was disappearing before his eyes.
"What did you do to him?" Kanan demanded.
"Interesting." The inquisitor noted. "So your living master doesn't know about your strange abilities outside the usual force abilities."
"I haven't told him." Ezra replied.
"So with no knowledge he can't see hear or sense you." The man replied. He struck at Ezra. "Your kind are harder to fight then his."
"Then just fight me." Ezra said but Kanan attack the inquisitor.
"What did you do to him?" Kanan asked.
"Ezra change back." Depa said.
Ezra used his living powers as a ghost and force pushed the inquisitor away from Kanan before changing back.
"Didn't know you could do that." Depa said.
"Thought I'd try it." Ezra replied. Then he yelled. "Kanan let's go."
The escape was incredibly risky and dangerous. Once back on the Ghost Ezra finally felt safe.
"Do you care to explain why you completely disappeared during the mission?" Kanan said once he and Ezra were alone.
"Not really." Ezra said.
"Ok spill what's bothering you?" Kanan said sitting down next to him on the open ramp now that the ship was landed on Lothal.
"Let's see other then the fact that you don't want me?" Ezra asked.
"Who said I didn't want you?"
"You were going to dump me off on some stranger to teach me." Ezra replied.
"Ezra, I wasn't going to dump you. I just wanted the best teacher for you." Kanan replied.
"Well I don't want the best. I want you. Not that you aren't the best." Ezra responded.
"I think I have an idea." Kanan said handing Ezra his lightsaber and picking up some milk cartons.
Kanan threw the milk cartons at Ezra as Ezra deflected them with the lightsaber.
Depa watched as her padawan and her ghost student that was his padawan bonded like no Jedi and master had before them.
"It won't be long before he can see and hear you in ghost form Ezra. Now he's somewhat aware of your abilities. You can tell him." She said.
"Not yet. He might be ready but I'm not." Ezra replied through their ghost talk.
"Then when you're both ready. He needs to know." She said.
