Chapter Twenty Eight
Kellin's PoV
It had been two weeks since the crash. To say Liz's ward was miserable would be an understatement. I mean, it was nice enough, with a vase of black and silver roses (courtesy of Ben Bruce and James Cassells) on the bedside table and generic gray furniture. She had been moved from an Intensive Care unit to a Long Term Care ward. There was a stupid 'one visitor at a time' rule (thanks to Frank, it was his idea) meaning we had to take it in shifts. Frank had even made a rota. He said that he didn't trust the nurses and wanted to make sure that there's always someone Liz trusts with her. He really took this hard. Everyone but Gerard was on the rota, even though Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy had to continue with their tour. Gerard wasn't allowed to visit according to Frank, based on the fact that 'It was all his fault because he had a bitch-fit and Liz felt bad'. I knew that Sammi doll had swapped out with Gerard on a midnight shift a few times though.
It was three am and Ben was with Liz, preparing to swap with me. Suddenly, there was a screech from the ward and I stormed in, ignoring the 'one at a time' rule. Ben was looking overjoyed at Liz.
"What happened?" I demanded.
"I started to make a stupid kink-shaming joke and she squeezed my hand!"
"Oh my god. Oh my god! Do we tell Frank?"
"No, he is being over-protective. I hope Liz will put him in his place tomorrow"
Just then, a nurse came flying through, looking rather disheveled.
"She squeezed my hand!" Ben told her.
"Okay. She should be conscious in about five hours. I'll be back every half hour" she barked, leaving.
"You hear that, Liz? You've got this. We can surprise Frank"
Bens PoV
I looked down on the body of the sleeping sixteen-year-old. She had regained some colour and I hoped she woke up soon.
She shivered and I turned the thermostat up in the corner of the room, before returning to the plastic chair next to her.
"So, did you know that James has a cross-dressing kink? I sure as hell didn't" I talked aimlessly. A tiny muscle twitched in her face and she smiled slightly.
"I take it you can hear me then. Should I put some music on? I insisted that I have your laptop brought here so I can play music. How about 'famous last words'? Ironic, really" I said, pressing play.
"I look forwards to when the guys actually play this to us, I mean, seriously. It's a great song and this crappy sound quality doesn't do it justice"
This whole time, Kellin had been sitting on the edge of the bed quietly, watching me talk to Liz and watching her react.
Three hours and many topics of pointless conversation later, Liz hadn't improved much but we had talked about a lot of useless crap.
"Screw it, I'm going to sing. Didn't you like that Fall Out Boy one, 'Young Volcanoes' or something?"
She twitched again and I broke into song.
"W-well done, you-you can sing well for a guitarist" croaked a voice from the bed.
"Liz! You didn't die!" Kellin squeaked.
"Hell spat me back out and I had to come back"
Kellin laughed through some joyous tears.
"It's good to have you back, princess" I nodded at her.
"Don't call me that, it makes me sound like an actually good person"
"You seem pretty good to me. Is everything you do to get other people together? I caught Kellin and Vic in the back lounge the other day" I laughed.
"Yay! I'm glad something good came of me dying"
"Cynical as ever. How did you know you were dead?"
"I heard you talking about it the other day. It's weird, I could only hear yours and Oli's voices, nobody else. Oh and James. I guess it's the British accents. It sounds familiar"
I felt slightly proud that I was one of the only people she could hear when she was in a coma.
"I really didn't know that James has a crossdressing kink, although it doesn't surprise me, he always did seem too normal"
"I agree! So, Frank's next shift is in three hours, let's surprise him. I had a bag of your clothes brought so you can get changed"
"Very optimistic of you, I was most likely to die. I can't actually see very well, everything is blurry"
"I was about to make a Twenty Øne Piløts joke then I realised how serious this is. I mean, I'll get a nurse" Kellin said, leaving.
He returned with a nurse, Liz told him about her symptoms, the nurse went to grab an optician and Liz had a shower and got dressed.
The optician returned, took Liz away to a different ward and tested her, then she returned looking rather confused.
"What did the optician say?" I asked.
"I need glasses. Apparently what with being dead, my eyes started to do something funny. They haven't reset yet so I need glasses. I don't know"
"Hahaha holy shit, you need glasses because you died oh my god" I laughed hysterically.
"Piss off! I will look fabulous. Kells, how long until Frank gets here?"
"Half an hour. You okay?"
"Absolutely perfect. That is quite a story to tell my nieces and nephews. Imagine, 'aunt Liz, why do you wear glasses?' 'Well kids, a really long time ago, I died...'" She laughed.
"Oh god, yes! Ash would be so pissed"
"Yep! So, how exactly did you learn about James's crossdressing kink?"
"Well, I turned up at the bus and found him, with his boyfriend, who was in a mini-skirt and panties"
"Haha so he is bi then?"
"I think so, i mean, his boyfriend does too"
"Oh my god, I can't even that's amazing!" She snorted.
"So, I have a very important question for you. What do you think about fanfiction...?"
She flushed a deep red colour and tried to hide dear face in her hands.
"Oh, shit. I knew this would happen. Okay, so, before I was adopted, I took a creative writing course in college. Then I found an app called Wattpad. I read and wrote so much fanfiction it was kind of weird. There was everything. And smut... so much smut"
I burst out laughing, clutching my stomach as tears leaked down my face.
"This isn't even funny! I'm so humiliated"
"Do-do you still read it?" I spluttered through giggles.
"That's the worst bit!" She cried. "It has carried through to my real life and that's why I'm so intent to set you up!"
"So you do! Do you still write it, too?"
"Sometimes! I can't let my readers down"
"Oh god, I can't even. What's the weirdest fanfic you've ever read?"
"Okay. You can't tell anyone. One time, someone recommended that I read the milk fic. So I did. Worst. Thing. Ever"
"Eh? I heard about it. What happens?"
"It's weird, mildly abusive, smut. And it's where Someone shoves milk up someone else's arse"
"Oh my god. I can't even" Kellin said from the corner.
There was an knock on the door and Frank looked in, only to almost pass out at the sight of Liz, still alive and awake.
"Liz! How are you? How do you feel? I-"
"Frank, I'm fine. Where's gee?" Liz cut him off.
"Why do you want to talk to him? He nearly got you killed"
"I want to talk to him because it's nobody's fault and he is almost definitely beating himself up"
"He is back at the bus. I'll bring him down" Frank said, slightly subdued.
Frank left, leaving me, Liz and Kellin.
"I can't help but feel like I'm third-wheeling right now, I'm going to find coffee" Kellin said, following Frank.
"So, it's just us now" I said. I looked at Liz, she looked beaten up but still as beautiful as before the crash. Her long blonde hair, perfectly curling around her shoulders, her clever grey eyes, glinting with knowledge.
"I agree. So, any new songs?" She asked.
"Yeah, a couple. I'm not really sure what I want to do with them though, I wrote them alone so I'm not sure the others would be too pleased with me slapping them onto the next album"
"Well, I'm thinking of doing a side-project, you could help if you like? That is, if Asking doesn't need you"
"Yeah, that sounds really great. How many songs have you written so far?"
"Nine, I spend all my free time doing it. I can play all the instruments I used for them too"
"Nice! Any ideas for names or shows?"
"Yeah, I'm thinking maybe Overdue or something for the name. I'd have to think more. The shows would be our own songs, and a few covers too. Nothing too heavy. Different to your usual stuff, less screaming"
"That actually sounds awesome! Any other people?"
"Oli Sykes, Tony Perry and Mike Fuentes"
"So, we've got a full team, then?"
"Yeah. We could do an album together, then if it works, add to it"
"Yay! Asking isn't doing much at the minute so that sounds awesome!"
"You know what really is a travesty?" She asked earnestly.
"No...?"
"I've lost loads of weight and now my clothes don't fit"
"You look-wait, you're actually kind of right. As soon as you get out of here, you'll have to go shopping"
"I hate shopping. Seriously. Wanna come?"
"Fuck no! I'm not standing like a perv while I wait for you to pick out some clothes"
"You are a perv so it doesn't make a difference. Besides, you're not the one who has to get changed at the risk of there being security cameras"
"They put security cameras in changing rooms? Isn't that illegal?"
"Probably but there's always vents and I have trust issues. Come with me! We can get lunch and I'll pay"
"Only if you show me your glass harmonica"
She visibly paled at my suggestion, her fingers fiddling with a necklace nervously.
"How did you find out about that?" She inquired bitterly.
"Oli told me. I asked how you cope and he told me music"
"What else you you know?" She demanded.
"Nothing, just that. Oh, you also play ukulele"
"Okay. Sure" she replied, just as Frank came in, with Gerard and Ashley on his heels.
"Liz! I'm so sorry. I hate myself" Gerard said desperately.
"Don't hate yourself, I'm alive, aren't I? Seriously"
"I know but I still want to make up for it"
"Fine, you can come shopping with me and Ben"
"Fine, that's fine"
"Wait, if he is coming, can I stay here?" I asked.
"Fuck no. You are coming and you are going to like it" Liz said firmly.
"Look, Liz, me and Frank were talking and we think it's best if you go back to America when you can get out of here" Ashley piped up.
"Piss off, I am finishing this tour, I'm going to leedsfest with Ben and James, then I'm going to warped with Sleeping With Sirens. I've already got the passes I need, I argued so hard for them" Liz said, standing up and walking out.
"I'll go after her" I volunteered.
I found her on the roof. She was sitting with her legs dangling over the edge.
"Liz! Get away from the edge!" I yelled from a distance.
"Do you ever think about how easy it would be to just end it all? About how nobody cares, not really. We're all too selfish to give a shit about anyone else. We cry at funerals because their death affects us. It changes our life slightly and that is scary. We don't miss people, we miss the part they had in out life. Maybe I should just jump. Not now, but when I'm not too scared" Liz said from the edge. A few tears slipped down my cheeks at what she said, so uncaring and emotionless.
"Come here, I need to talk and I'm afraid of heights, please" I begged.
"See? We're all selfish bastards" she replied, standing up and walking over.
"Are you okay? I'm worried about you"
"Why would I be okay? I died, I pulled through, I'm still here. Nobody is ever truly okay, there's always something"
"You're scaring me, stop it. Really, come down from the roof"
She strode over to the elevator and went back to her floor. I followed her.
"Um, Ashley, can I have a word out here, please?" I asked, poking my head into the room.
He followed me outside into the hallway.
"Liz is acting really weirdly. Like, talking about how easy it would be to jump off a building and how nobody would care"
"She hasn't taken her meds"
"Okay, what do we do?"
"Call Oli. He is the Chris Pratt to her CGI raptor"
"Great analogy. I'll call him" I said, pulling out my phone and ringing him.
"Yo, you've gotta get down here with liz's meds, she is about to jump off a roof"
"Okay, I'll be right there. Keep her in her ward" Oli said, hanging up.
I walked back Into the room to see Liz sitting on the bed, her body shaking and her pupils worryingly dilated. Gerard was trying to comfort her but she was slapping him away, telling him that she was fine.
Oli burst through the door a minute later, brandishing eleven pill bottles and a box of nicotine patches.
He summoned me and Ashley into the corridor.
"She won't take the pills in the state she is in, but she will take the patches. We need to get it on her, she will calm down enough to give her the pills"
"Okay, what do we need to do?" Asked Ashley.
"She might not take patch so you might need to pin her down"
"Right. Let's go" I said, going into the room.
"Liz, can I give you a patch? It will help" Oli said calmly.
"No! I don't want it!" She screamed. Oli nodded at me and Ashley and I ran over and tackled Liz to the bed, lying on top of her to pin her down. Her heart was racing so fast I could barely feel it and she was struggling.
Oli rolled up her sleeve and stuck the patch to her arm while I continued to lay on top of her. After a minute, she stopped struggling and calmed down, her heart rate lowering and her pupils shrinking.
"H-have you got my meds?" She stuttered anxiously.
I nodded and climbed off her while Oli poured out the pills.
He gave her sixteen in total and she swallowed them dry, calming down and curling up in the bed.
"Alright guys, let's give her some space" Oli said, causing everyone to leave the room.
"Ben, d-don't go. I want some company"
"Alright, if you come onto me though, I might not have the power to resist" I said, causing her to laugh. "Seriously though, what's up?"
"Maybe I should go back to America. I mean, this always happens when stuff changes. I always get really anxious and depressed"
"I know what you mean. So, change is a trigger then?" I asked.
"I think so. What I need is home"
"Or, maybe you need someone who is going to be with you at all times, someone who will always help you and understand, who will listen and actually care. As well as living with you and generally being your rock"
"I do, that's exactly what I need. Who would be willing to live with and essentially chaperone a weird, anxious, depressed kid with ADHD and social awkwardness?"
"You're looking at someone, love. Besides, I feel the need for something to stay the same too. It's an anxiety thing, which I'm good at hiding. I've grown rather fond of you"
"But what about your family? And your band? It's not practical"
"No, but you could move in with me, tour with me, generally stick with me"
"That actually could work, I like travelling and I would just tag along"
"There would have to be some compromises, you would come on tour with us and I would come on tour with you"
"Don't worry about that, I'm leaving the band. I can't physically or emotionally be there for them. I might give up on music altogether and make a living behind the scenes''
"Don't do that, you are an awesome musician, I've heard you play"
"When?"
"The others record you all the time"
"I had no idea"
"Anyway, we digress. I take you under my wing, mentor you, so to speak. Make sure you always have something that stays the same. We would need to talk to Ash but that's not a big deal"
"Okay, let's sleep on it. I am not mentally stable and I imagine you are somewhat in shock. We can think about this over coffee"
"Mmm coffee. I'll go and buy some, I'll be back in a minute'' I said, leaving.
Liz's PoV
Wait, Ben Bruce, the lead guitarist of Asking Alexandria has just offered to mentor me and make sure I'm never alone? Is this just a pity thing or does he mean it? And I would move in with him? Like roommates or like he needs to look after me? I want this to be a mutual relationship and not just me relying on him desperately.
I was yanked out of my thoughts by James Cassells entering the room and sitting on the end of my bed.
"Hello, brother. Can I help you?" I asked.
"You talk to yourself, you know"
"I was not aware of that fact. I assume you heard what me and Ben were talking about"
"No, he told me in the corridor out there. He genuinely needs someone right now, he is more selfish than you think"
"Ah, well that's good. How are you doing, we haven't spoken in a while"
"We spoke for less than three minutes before you freaked the fuck out and ran off, before being hit by a car. I doubt that really counts as a sibling relationship"
"You're right. We should hang out"
"I agree. As soon as you get out of here, you have a waiting list of people who want to chill with you, including Alan and Austin, Jack barakat, he seems kinda weird to be honest-"
"He is, we hung out a lot in LA"
"Right. Oh, and Mikey wants company"
"Which one?"
"The one that isn't fucking Tony Perry"
"Oh, right. Wait, what?"
"Oh yeah, they went on a date last night. Ben swapped shifts with Tony"
"Sweet! So, when am I going to get to meet your band mates?" I asked with a smirk.
"Actually, Cam and Denis are on their way now. I think they're coming from America, they had some stuff to finish off"
"Where's Sam?"
"Visiting family"
"Yay! Finally I get to meet the most gorgeous metalcore Ukrainian alive!" I giggled
"Please don't have sex with him, that'd be weird"
"I'm a demisexual, straight edge potato. Wish me luck"
"Demisexual?"
"Yeah, I worked it out a few weeks ago"
"Oh, um, okay. So, how are you doing?"
"Eh, still alive. I'm mentally fucked but that's fine. What about you?"
"Yeah, I'm good. Confused that I have two siblings that I never knew about but eh" he said, shrugging.
"Ha, I imagine that is kinda weird. Speaking of, where is our brother?"
"He flew back to America after Tyler threatened to leave him here"
"What the fuck has Tyler got against me?"
"Some sort of weird 'you're his little sister and he might leave the band to look after you' thing. Tyler got kinda possessive when I met them"
"Eh, maybe I should talk to him"
Ben returned with three cups of coffee and handed them out to us.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Double shot vanilla latte" he replied with a smirk.
"How on earth did you know what I like?"
"Oli"
"Quit stalking my sister, creep" James laughed.
"He knows everything, I swear" I laughed.
"Oliver Sykes, stalker extraordinaire" Ben snorted.
"I think it's from when I was in the home, I used to stay with him for a week every two months"
"I feel really shitty that I was off, in a band, earning money while you were stuck in a home" James said.
"Don't, Josh actually knew where I was and still didn't get me. Oh well, I'm here now"
Me and Ben decided to talk to everyone in the morning. I was released as long as I stayed in the bus and I was given two pairs of glasses and three pairs of contact lenses so I could actually see.
