9. A Date And A Fight
In order to keep in touch with Sam right now, and once he left for Japan, Kai asked his parents if they could get him a mobile phone. He didn't have enough money to buy his own and he really wanted to keep in touch with Sam. Plus, his parents didn't have any complaints when he asked.
"So how do you work this thing?" Takeshi asked as the two of them sat at a table as Kai unboxed his new phone.
Kai shrugged as he took his new phone out of the box. "So Sam told me to get this app called Instagram when I got my phone and get Snapchat. She also gave me her number."
Kai produced a piece of paper where Sam had written her number on.
"A love heart?" Takeshi chuckled. "Seriously?"
Kai rolled his eyes. "Don't be jealous Takeshi."
"Jealous? Me? Never. Don't forget who beat you today in training." Takeshi said, bringing up the events of their earlier training session with Sensei Yazuko.
Kai dismissed Takeshi and began fiddling with his new phone, it didn't take as much effort as Kai thought and it wasn't as hard as he expected.
"I need a username." Kai told Takeshi after downloading Instagram on his phone.
Takeshi pondered for a minute. "How about TigerClawKai?"
"That's...well...any other suggestions?" Kai asked.
"What about just your name?" Takeshi answered.
Kai nodded and typed the name 'kaihilton' in the username box.
"What the hell?" he exclaimed. "It's already taken!"
"Add some numbers to it then, or those underscore things." Takeshi suggested.
In the end, Kai's final Instagram name was @kai_hilton1 and after finalising his profile with a bio and a picture, he began trying to find some people to follow. The first accounts he followed were some karate accounts and then some other accounts.
"What's Sam's username?" Kai asked Takeshi.
"How am I supposed to know? You have her number, message her or something." Takeshi said.
Kai went off Instagram and went onto his contacts app, adding Sam as a contact on his phone. Once he had done that, he started typing a message to her.
Hello Sam, this is Kai Hilton. I just got my new phone and was setting up my Instagram acount, what is your username? Mine is kai_hilton1 if you want to follow me.
Goodbye.
Takeshi snickered as he read the message over Kai's shoulder. As the boy hit send, Takeshi burst out laughing.
"What?" Kai asked. "Did I do something wrong?"
Takeshi chuckled. "No...you just sounded really posh."
"I was being polite!" Kai exclaimed.
"Let's just wait for her reply..." Takeshi said.
Just as Kai put his phone down, a notification appeared on his phone and Sam's name lit up on his screen.
"She replied already?" Kai said, shocked.
Kai tapped the notification and read the message out loud. "Hey Kai, why do you sound so formal L-O-L, what does that mean?"
Takeshi shrugged. "Maybe something funny cause she put this laughing face thing."
Kai continued to read the message. "My Instagram is samlarusso and I'll go follow you now!"
"Go check your Instagram." Takeshi advised Kai.
The boy went onto Instagram and saw that Sam had followed him. He clicked on her profile and followed her back, as well as checking her followers and following other people.
Do you want to Facetime later?
A new message popped up from Sam.
"What's a Facetime?" Kai asked exasperatedly.
"I don't know," Takeshi said before getting up, "I'm going to let you suffer by yourself and go have a shower."
Kai groaned. "Fine, I'll talk to you later."
As Takeshi left, Kai typed a message back to Sam.
Sure, I'm free now.
Seconds later, something popped up and Kai could now see his face with the buttons 'Accept' or 'Decline'. He pressed accept and saw Sam's face pop up on his screen.
"Oh hey Sam," Kai said, "I'm still pretty new to this."
Sam chuckled. "I can tell."
"I prefer talking in real life so much more." Kai commented.
"Is that so?" Sam asked. "Do you want to go to the mall tomorrow then? I don't think you've been."
"I have not," Kai confirmed, "and is this you asking me on a date LaRusso?"
Sam blushed. "I mean...only if you want to."
Kai smirked. "It's a date."
The following afternoon, both Kai and Sam were sitting in the food court with some burgers and fries on a tray. They had been talking about their life before they had both met each other, Kai was telling Sam stories of him in Okinawa and Sam was telling her about all her stories from her childhood.
"You seriously crashed into Johnny Lawrence's car?" Kai asked, shocked.
Sam nodded. "I wasn't driving but he was really angry and came up to our car and really freaked me and the other girls out."
"Crazy," Kai commented, "your life seems more interesting than mine.
"I doubt it, I bet some really cool stuff happened to you in Japan." Sam said.
Kai thought for a second. "I mean, one time me and Takeshi did get in a pretty awesome street fight."
"What happened?"
"Well, there were some thieves trying to steal from the market," Kai explained, "so me and Takeshi stopped them by fighting them. We were local heroes for a bit since we were quite young."
"A hero since day one." Sam chuckled.
Kai laughed and changed the topic. "How's your dad's Dojo coming along anyways?"
Sam sighed. "Not great, we've only had one ore student join and he's not the best..."
"What's his name?" Kai asked curiously.
"Demetri," Sam told him, "he's just-"
Just then a voice appeared from behind Kai. "I heard my name, hello Sam, hello boy who won the karate tournament."
Kai turned his head and saw the same boy he had saw Miguel talk to at the All Valley.
"Hey Demetri." Sam smiled.
"How do you know him?" Demetri questioned, sitting on a seat near them.
Sam stuttered. "Well...Kai is my...um..."
She looked at the boy, asking him for help.
What were they? They were going on a date so did that mean Sam was Kai's girlfriend and he was her boyfriend? Or was this something that they would have to talk about? Luckily, Demetri was too impatient to wait for their answer and carried on speaking.
"Anyways," he continued, "I'm here to get the new issue of Dungeon Lord, do you guys want anything from the comic book store?"
Kai chuckled. "No thanks Demetri, I'm good."
Sam shook her head. "I'll be fine as well."
As Demetri rushed off to the comic book store, both Sam and Kai shared a laugh.
"So that's him?" Kai asked. "He doesn't strike me as a fighter."
Sam shook her head. "My dad's not giving up on him, he thinks Demetri has potential."
"I get what he means," Kai told her, "I've seen a bunch of people show up to Sensei's Dojo who I didn't think would be good, but turns out with just the right teaching they're actually pretty good."
Sam listened. "Well, either way we're in no place to pick and choose our students. Everyone likes Cobra Kai more because they're more fighting whilst Miyagi-Do is more about defence."
"The karate that I do is similar to what the Cobra Kai students learn," Kai told her, "it's Shotokan karate which is more offensive, I see why people prefer the Cobras but you just gotta trust in the process, good things happen to good people, and cheaters never win."
Sam laughed. "Are you still upset over what Miguel and Hawk did to you?"
Kai grimaced at the memory. "Well, obviously yeah. It was uncalled for and it just upset me that they would stoop so low just to win."
"At least you still won," Sam said, "how is your shoulder anyways?"
"Better than ever." Kai grinned.
Just then there was a familiar voice that Kai, menacing as ever. "It didn't have to be this way. You could've joined Cobra Kai if you weren't such a pussy."
"At least I'm not an asshole!"
Both Kai and Sam's heads turned in that direction as they saw Hawk and some of his associates from Cobra Kai approaching Demetri, they were going to attack him.
One of them came behind Demetri and grabbed him, causing the boy to groan and struggle.
"Come on Sam," Kai said, "we gotta help him!"
"You're dead meat." Hawk said, glaring directly at the struggling boy.
Just as Hawk approached him, Kai and Sam both entered the scene and the two of them pushed away from the two people closest to Demetri.
"Get back," Sam told Demetri once he was free from the Cobra Kai member's grip, she then turned to Hawk, "you guys need to back off."
Sam stared at Hawk, in her fighting position.
"I don't wanna have to hit a girl." Hawk said to her.
Kai stepped and joined Sam's side. "You wouldn't stand a chance...cheater."
He emphasised the last word and Hawk scoffed. "Five against three?" he then paused. "More like two and a half.
Two of the Cobra Kai boys charged towards Sam and she expertly and skillfully defended them and fought back, her Miyagi-Do karate coming useful. As Hawk charged towards Kai, Kai blocked and sent a kick to his stomach.
"After All Valley," Kai smirked, "do you really want to get beaten again?"
As Sam defended herself from the Cobras and sent some of them to the ground, Kai had just pushed someone who had tried to attack him from behind, his main focus was Hawk.
"Come here you pussy." Hawk yelled as Kai diverted his attention to a boy who was trying to attack Kai.
Once Kai had dealt with the other Cobra Kai students attacking him, Hawk roared and charged forwards, grabbing his arm, Kai threw Hawk over his back before turning and sending two solid punches to Hawk's stomach.
"Demetri look out!" Sam yelled before rushing to the boy's aid and kicking the boy who was trying to hurt Demetri.
As Hawk balanced himself again, he sent two sloppy punches towards Kai which the boy blocked and as Hawk sent a kick towards Kai's head, the boy ducked and skillfully targetted an exposed part of Hawk's torso, sending two punches there before sending a final flying, spinning kick, knocking Hawk onto the floor.
As Hawk laid cowered on the floor, Kai stepped over and looked down on him. "Guess you lose," Kai told him, "again."
"Now get lost." Sam said to Hawk, and him and the rest of the Cobras scrambled away.
"Thanks guys," Demetri thanked, "I'm gonna go back to the comic store and get my comic."
Once Demetri left, Kai looked at Sam and sent her an approving nod. "That wasn't bad Miss LaRusso."
"Why thank you Malachai." Sam smiled.
Kai cringed. "I hate it when you call me that."
Sam giggled and took Kai's hand. "Come on, let's get out of here."
And together, the two of them, hands intertwined, left the shopping mall, leaving the astonished crowd who had just witnessed the fight behind.
