34. Silver's Demise
Kai was packing, ready to leave for his flight in the early hours of tomorrow. His phone dinged with a notification and as he looked he saw a message from Sam to meet her. He we sceptical at first but made his way there.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Hawk asked aggressively as Kai appeared.
"Sam told me to be here. So calm it. How many times do I have to tell you I'm not your enemy man?" Kai retorted.
They stood in awkward silence as Sam and Tory appeared - an unlikely combination.
"What's going on?" Kai asked.
"What happened to your hand?" Robby asked Tory.
Tory shoved her bandaged hand into her jacket pocket. "Training accident. I'm okay."
Robby gave her a sceptical look but didn't push.
Sam launched into her purpose for calling the meeting. "We think we have a way to prove Silver assaulted Stingray."
Miguel's brows furrowed. "How?"
"If the attack happened at the old dojo," Tory explained, "Silver had security cameras installed there. There might be footage of it."
Robby frowned. "That place was cleaned out months ago. There's no way anything's still there."
"That might not matter," Demetri interjected, stepping forward. His face lit up as he spoke, clearly excited by the idea, "the systems we sell at TechTown - Silver probably uses something similar. They save footage to a central server. Even if the cameras are gone, the recordings would still exist."
Hawk's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "You're saying Silver might've taken the system with him?"
Tory nodded. "I think he did. I saw a server setup in his office. If we access it, we might be able to find that footage."
Hawk's lips curled into a grin. "We could post the clip to his YouTube channel."
Kai, who had been quiet until now, shifted uneasily. "Breaking into Silver's office isn't exactly a walk in the park." he said.
Sam turned to him. "You're not wrong, but we can't let him get away with this. Stingray's not the only one he's hurt."
Kai nodded reluctantly. "I'll help however I can. But we need to be careful. If Silver catches us..."
The unspoken threat hung in the air.
Miguel broke the tension. "We're not going to let him catch us. We're going to be smart about this." He turned to Demetri. "You're sure you can get into the system?"
Demetri puffed out his chest. "Please. It's me."
Sam was energised by the plan. "Get a hold of everyone else. Let them know what's happening." She looked around the group, her voice firm. "Tonight, we're taking down Cobra Kai."
The group nodded, determination etched on their faces. They dispersed, leaving Sam and Kai standing alone under the dim light.
"This is awkward...but I have a flight to catch."
Sam's face fell. "You're leaving tonight?"
Kai nodded. "I'll stay for as long as I can. I'll take an Uber later and meet the other two at the airport."
Sam looked crestfallen but she placed her hand on Kai's arm, sending shockwaves through the boy's body. "Thanks."
"For what?" Kai asked.
"Just for helping, and being here, and letting us have a fresh start."
Kai smiled, placing his hand above Sam's which caused her to blush. "Anytime."
Over at Silver's house, Sensei Kim sat on a sofa as Terry Silver poured out a glass of wine. His flickering fireplace illuminated his living room as he walked back over to where Sensei Kim was.
"You promised to make my grandfather's dream a reality," Kim said, her voice as sharp as a blade. She turned to face him, her dark eyes piercing. "To bring his karate to the world. And by gaining acceptance into the Sekai Taikai, you're on the verge of fulfilling that promise. And yet..." she paused, letting her words hang, "your rivalries here remain a concern."
Silver swirled the wine in his glass, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I share your concern," he said smoothly, "but I'm not worried. We'll send them a message well before the tournament."
Kim raised a skeptical eyebrow. "And the contents of this message?"
His smirk widened, eyes glinting with malice. "Stay the fuck out of our way, or someone will get hurt."
Kim's expression didn't change. "When and how to deliver it, exactly?"
Silver sipped his wine, savouring it. "I don't know yet. But it won't be subtle."
Kim's gaze remained steady, her disapproval evident. "You're too focused on destroying LaRusso and Lawrence. They are mosquitoes. Swat them and move on. Our goal is larger than petty rivalries."
Silver's smile faded slightly, replaced by a calculating look. "I don't need you to remind me of our goal. Everything I do serves it, even if it looks...messy from the outside."
Kim stepped closer. "Messy won't do. Especially now. There's another issue we must discuss."
Silver's brow furrowed slightly. "Go on."
Kim exhaled, her posture rigid. "Sensei Yazuko has informed me he plans to return to Japan soon. He believes his debt to my family has been repaid by helping Cobra Kai gain entry into the Sekai Taikai."
Silver's smile disappeared entirely, replaced by a glint of irritation. He set his glass down on the table with a sharp clink. "When did he tell you this?"
"Earlier today," Kim replied, "he said he will leave with Kai and Takeshi as soon as possible. He's made his intentions clear."
Silver chuckled, a sound devoid of humour. "He thinks he can just walk away?" His tone was low and dangerous.
"He has honored his word," Kim said, her voice steady, "and I will respect his decision. But you..."
Silver raised a hand to silence her, his mind already racing. His expression shifted into one of quiet calculation, his eyes narrowing as he considered the implications. "Kai and Takeshi are valuable assets. If Yazuko wants to leave, so be it. But they'll stay."
Kim frowned. "Yazuko is their Sensei. They'll follow him."
Silver smiled again, the expression as cold as it was confident. "That's where you're wrong. Kai and Takeshi are young. Impressionable. I'll make sure they see where their future truly lies."
"You would manipulate them?" Kim's voice was icy.
"I'll show them the opportunities they'll have if they stay here," Silver said smoothly, his tone almost reasonable, "they're smart. They'll make the right choice. And once they do, Yazuko will have no choice but to rethink his plans."
Kim studied him for a long moment, then turned back toward the window. "If this backfires, it will be on you."
Silver picked up his glass again, his confidence returning as he took another sip. "It won't backfire. Kai and Takeshi will be Cobra Kai's champions. And when they stand on the Sekai Taikai stage, the world will see the strength of your grandfather's teachings."
Kim didn't respond, but her silence was heavy.
"I should come with you." Takeshi said firmly after Kai told him of the plan for the evening.
"No," Kai responded, "you need to go with Sensei. I will be fine."
Takeshi was uncertain. But eventually, he agreed. "You better not miss our flight though. Otosan needs us home as soon as possible to prepare."
"For what?" Kai asked.
Takeshi realised he hadn't filled Kai in yet. "Otosan told me this morning...while you were out. The admissions panel for the Sekai Taikai will be coming to the dojo next week to see if we can be let in."
Kai was shocked. "Since when did Sensei enter our dojo?"
Takeshi shrugged. "He must've decided when they came to see Cobra Kai. I assume that's why we weren't allowed to fight."
It all made sense to Kai. "But we don't have enough fighters."
"I know," was Takeshi's reply, "but Otosan says not to worry, he will sort it out. We just need to get home first."
Kai nodded. "Got it."
That evening, the teenagers' plan was put into action. Kai, Sam, Hawk, Demetri, Robby, Miguel and other members gathered outside the Cobra Kai dojo. With Kai's access card, they entered and began their grand plan.
"We need you downstairs as look outs," Sam told the others, "we're going upstairs to Silver's office."
The tension between Kai and Hawk was still there, but for this one heist they were pulling off, both put it aside.
"Pulling the clip off the server is first day of computer camp shit." Hawk said. "Then we just upload the clip to the YouTube channel, and Cobra Kai is out of business."
As Hawk and Demetri began their computer nerd business, Kai stood watching.
"Let's get the camera." Miguel said. It was awkward being in the same room as Miguel and Hawk but Kai brushed it off.
Without missing a beat, Robby walked up to the camera, jumped, and pulled it off.
"There you go."
"I can't believe it's happening," Tory said, "we're really gonna take Silver down."
"What could go wrong?" Robby said with a shrug.
As the group huddled around the computer, Kai looked around and as he looked over he shoulder he noticed a small red light.
"Crap," he breathed, before speaking to the group, "there's another camera!"
"Shit!" Sam said.
"We can't get rid of it," Kai said, "Silver will know. We don't have much time!"
"Guys!" they heard a voice call from downstairs.
"We'll check it out, you guys stay here." Sam said to Hawk and Demetri. They nodded and the other five went downstairs. As they made their way downstairs they were greeted by a group of Cobra Kai students. Kenny Payne and Elijah St John leading the pack.
Just as Kai came down the stairs he saw Elijah land a brutal kick on Anthony, sending him sprawling back. As Kenny looked up, he noticed Kai, Robby and Tory.
"So, you're with them now?" he spat.
"Doesn't surprise me." Elijah added, his eyes never leaving Kai's. "You knew what would happen if him and his friends ever stepped foot into this dojo again."
Kai felt a chill run down his spine.
"How'd they know we were here?" Sam whispered to Kai , panic flickering in his eyes.
"I don't know." Kai replied, his tone uncertain.
Kenny smirked at Elijah, as Kyler's spoke out. "Mitch, come on. Get your ass over here where you belong."
Mitch looked at everyone, their faces filled with betrayal, before he walked over and unzipped his jacket - revealing a Cobra Kai top.
"Penis Breath, how could you?" Bert asked.
Mitch shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe because they don't call me Penis Breath. You guys have been so dead set on taking down Cobra Kai. I didn't even wanna leave in the first place. I mean, look around. They got snacks, swag, smoothies. Our dojo doesn't even have a roof. Or, like, any chicks. No offense, Sam."
"Penis Breath, shut up." Miguel snapped, glaring.
Kenny crossed his arms. "We got a traitor, y'all got a traitor, so that cancels out."
"Are we gonna throw down or what?" Kyler asked.
But Tory stepped forward, her voice firm. "I'm not a traitor. I'm just not buying what Silver is selling. And neither should any of you."
Robby agreed. "Silver lied. To all of us."
"Us? The only person who lied to me is you." Kenny said angrily.
"Hey," Miguel interjected. His tone was calm but firm, "Robby's right. You don't wanna do this."
Kenny's response was swift. "Yeah, I do."
The dojo erupted into chaos. Fists flew, and students clashed. Kai barely had time to react before Elijah St John charged straight at him.
"Kai." Elijah growled, his eyes cold and fuelled by rage. His strikes came fast and relentless, each one more brutal than the last.
Kai blocked as best as he could, but Elijah's aggression was unnerving. His punches were meant to cause damage. A vicious elbow strike caught Kai in the ribs, and he staggered back, winded.
Elijah didn't let up. He feinted, then swept Kai's legs out from under him. Kai hit the mat hard, his vision swimming as pain radiated through his body.
As Kai struggled to get up, he noticed the gleam in Elijah's eye. The boy was out for blood. Elijah raised his leg, poised to deliver a devastating strike to Kai's head.
"Stop!"
The voice was small but Elijah recognised it immediately. He turned to see that amidst all of the chaos still going on, Milo had entered looking for his older brother. Milo stood with his hands clenched into nervous fists.
"Elijah," Milo said, his voice trembling, "don't. Please. I don't like this."
Elijah froze, his expression hard but conflicted. "Milo, stay out of this," he said through gritted teeth.
"No," Milo said, stepping forward. His sessions with Devon had given him a new sense of bravery, "this shouldn't be who we are."
For a moment, it seemed as if Elijah might listen. His shoulders relaxed slightly, and his foot lowered. But then...
"Get back!"
Demetri, misreading the situation, lunged forward and kicked Milo square in the chest, sending the younger boy sprawling to the ground.
"Milo!" Elijah's voice cracked with fury. His hesitation evaporated, replaced by blind rage. He turned on Demetri, swinging wildly.
Kai, despite his pain, pushed himself off the ground. "Elijah, stop!" he shouted, intercepting the furious boy. He grabbed Elijah's arm, twisting it to immobilise him.
Devon saw Milo crumpled on the ground. Her eyes filled with rage as she turned toward Demetri.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" she shouted. Before anyone could stop her, she charged at Demetri, throwing a punch that knocked him off balance.
As the fights restarted, Kai - who was currently taking on two different Cobra Kai students - noticed Sensei Kim enter and go straight for Tory. He noticed the older woman get the upper hand and was just about to help but saw Sam get there first, taking the Sensei down.
The room was a swirling storm of combat, shouts, and the echo of bodies hitting the mat. Kai's chest was heaving as he tried to regroup. He saw that Elijah was standing protectively by Milo, who looked shaken but unharmed.
As Anthony received the tablet from Hawk, the group formed around him, protecting the egg as the video continued uploading. The Cobra Kai students came closer and closer but finally the adults had arrived. Daniel LaRusso made his way to the middle, trying to separate the teens.
"I need to talk to you."
The voice of Tory cut through all the commotion as the clip finally uploaded and was being played on the TV.
As students watched, Kai surveyed the expressions. Kenny looked betrayed as the clip continued playing. Halfway through, a bruised Terry Silver entered in the back of the room, realising his fate.
Silver tried to plead his case, trying to use his slick charm and manipulative words.
But it didn't work.
Everyone finally saw who Terry Silver really was.
