19. Love And Lies
After what happened at the abandoned laser tag place, Kai had a lot to think about. He was losing his temper and cool quite easily and if Sensei Yazuko knew, he would be extremely disappointed. The boy was almost about to break a boy's arm for revenge.
Cobra Kai was having a negative influence in his life.
The days Kai spent in America turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. He had kept up with Takeshi every day and part of him knew that it was almost time for him to return.
"Sam," Kai told his girlfriend, they had confirmed their relationship months ago, "I think it's time for me to go back to Japan."
Sam pouted at her boyfriend. "Do you really need to do that?"
Kai nodded. "I need to go back to normal."
"Isn't this normal enough for you? Living with me?" Sam questioned him.
"Don't get me wrong, I love it here with you," Kai assured her, "but my life is in Japan, not here."
Sam knew they would have to do long-distance but she still wasn't ready for that day. She didn't want him to leave but she also didn't want to restrict him.
"Fine," she sighed, "I gotta go."
Sam made her way back home from the Hilton home and upon walking into her back garden to try and find her dad, she saw her.
Tory Nichols.
Sam froze up, the Cobras had still been out for them and were even angrier after Kai almost broke Hawk's arm. The sight of Tory still brought back the uncomfortable memories from the school fight.
"What are you doing here?" Sam questioned.
Tory was wearing a yellow long-sleeved t-shirt. "Didn't think you could hide from me forever, did you?"
"Gonna break my arm too?" Sam said bravely. Demetri was still recovering from what had happened.
Tory replied angrily. "You let that happen! You wouldn't even fight back, you needed your stupid knight to save you! All you did was just run home and cry to mommy!"
Tory paused.
"Well mommy's not here...and neither is Kai..."
Tory threw the first punch and it hit Sam's shoulder, Sam dodged out the way as Tory tried to kick her. Tory then grabbed Sam and threw her into the punching bag, Sam rolled and tried to fight back.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to break your arm," Tory said with an evil smile, "you deserve much worse!"
Their fight continued and Sam could feel Tory's punches and kicks making contact with her, no matter how hard she tried to block and defend herself, Tory would always seem to hit her.
Tory sent a knee right to Sam's face causing the LaRusso girl to groan in pain. Tory sent a kick to Sam's face, causing her to fall on the ground. The Nichols girl grabbed Sam's head and shoved it into the pond water. Was this it?
Was Sam going to die?
She tried to scream for help but no one could hear her underwater, eventually Sam could feel herself stop. Everything stopped.
And that was when she woke up.
Sam shot up on her bed, breathing heavily. She turned and looked next to her and Kai was sleeping peacefully. It was all a dream...a really bad dream. Maybe Kai wasn't going to leave her soon...
"Hey Kai," Sam said, gently shaking the boy awake, "are you awake?"
Kai nodded groggily. "I am now, what's up?"
"Are you leaving soon?" Sam asked plainly, wanting a straight-forward answer.
Kai raised an eyebrow in confusion, it was an extremely sudden question. "Well, yeah I think so," he told her, "I think I've overstayed my time here."
Sam's heart broke slightly. No matter how much she told herself that she didn't want to hold Kai back, she really just wanted him to stay with her. She wanted to be selfish and have Kai all to herself.
But with him, there would never be that stability. She wasn't sure if she could do long-distance and she wasn't sure if being with Kai was even the right choice. There was so much indecisiveness within her, Miguel had apologised for his actions and Sam had easily forgiven him, and even though Sam assured Kai that she loved him and him only, there was still something there between the exes.
Sam told Kai that she had to leave for a meeting with her dad about the All Valley and Kai nodded.
"I'm going to hopefully get my driver's license today!" Kai said happily.
This was something the boy had been going on long about, he was excited to get his first proper license in America and wished for Sam to be there with him, but she was busy and her dad had requested her.
"Good luck." Sam smiled, giving her boyfriend a quick kiss before leaving the Hilton home.
Whilst Sam headed off to this committee meeting her father wanted her to attend, Kai began to get ready for his big day at the DMV office. He had passed all the required tests and he was now of age. He had recently turned seventeen and for his birthday he only had a small, private celebration with his family and the LaRusso's. He also made sure to talk to Takeshi and Sensei Yazuko who also wished the boy a happy birthday.
His parents knew he wanted to get a license, so they brought him a car from the LaRusso dealership. Kai was eternally grateful and thanked his parents multiple times. Sam had gotten him a tiger ring, which Kai now wore every day and was super thankful for.
Over by the town hall, Sam was sitting with her mom and dad waiting for Daniel LaRusso's turn to fight for the All Valley. Also there was Johnny Lawrence and Kreese, the man who took Cobra Kai away from Johnny.
"Ok, next we hear the appeals for the cancellation of the All Valley Under Eighteen karate tournament." the woman said, banging her gavel.
All three men stood up and made their way to the front, John Kreese made it there first.
"Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am retired Army General John Kreese-"
"-thank you for your service." the woman interjected.
Kreese nodded. "It was an honour to serve, and I continue to serve right here in our community, by teaching our children strength and discipline through karate."
All three men bickered and argued about their points of view and everything seemed to not be going their way. Their arguments were a prime example of why the tournament shouldn't continue.
"It is clear that this karate tournament is casuing division and rivalry in our community. You gentlemen, have made an excellent case today as to why this tournament should not continue-"
"WAIT!" a voice said from the back of the room, causing all heads to turn. Miguel Diaz made his way down.
"My name is Miguel Diaz," he spoke into the microphone, "I was in the school fight, I was the one kicked off the second floor. You know...I thought I was going to be paralysed, I relearned how to stand, how to walk and I want to tournament to continue."
"We are very happy for your recovery young man but I'm afriad you don't understand-"
"Yes, he does." Sam said, standing up and making her way to join Miguel. "We're the ones fighting, we're the ones getting hurt. Our voices should matter the most, and we want a place where we can compete, fairly and safely."
Miguel looked at the girl that he still hadn't gotten over and smiled.
"When I first moved here, I was bullied," Miguel told the crowd, "I realised there's no escaping it, some kind will always want to take your lunch money or give you a wedgie or a swirlie-"
"What's a swirlie?"
"When you dunk someone's head in the toilet and flush it," Johnny Lawrence said, "pretty funny actually."
"Sensei!" Miguel said before continuing. "Instead of burying your heads in snad pretending that bullying doesn't exist, or that you can get rid of it, you need to teach kids how to defend themselves."
"Physically and mentally," Sam added, "becuse sometimes the scars you can't see are the ones that hurt the most."
Miguel nodded. "Karate is about dicipline, it's baout inner strength, it's about confidence. Lessons you can use for the rest of your life. Look, I don't know where I would be today, or who I would be today, if it wasn't for my Sensei."
Miguel looked at Johnny Lawrence appreciateively.
"We don't need this tournament to do cool kicks or sell tickets," Miguel told the panel, "we need it to show the bullies of the world that we're not afraid. It's called 'All Valley' because it's for everyone, to give everyone a chance to show what they can do, to fight, to become a champion. And we deserve that chance."
Once Miguel was done speaking, the people on the council looked at them, rethinking their decision. Everyone was nodding, which meant only one thing.
"To be honest, I don't get the Valley's fascination with karate," the councilwoman said, "but if it means that much to all of you, and you're willing to sign waivers stating that the city is not liable, then the All Valley Under-Eighteen karate tournament is officially back on!"
Everyone cheered and Sam hugged Miguel enthusiastically, the boy took this as a sign that maybe she wasn't as over him as he thought, and maybe there was a chance that she loved him and not Kai.
The two of them made their way back to the LaRusso home, where they sat in the back garden talking about today's events. What the two didn't know was that Kai had just officially gotten his driver's license and was driving back in his new car to surprise Sam at her house. But when he pulled up, he saw something that broke his heart.
Miguel and Sam were kissing.
Sam noticed Kai, looking absolutely heartbroken as he placed his license back in his pocket.
"I thought you loved me?" Kai croaked out.
Sam looked at Kai apologetically. "Kai...it's not what you think?"
"Not what I think?" Kai spat out. "I see my girlfriend kissing her ex-boyfriend, it looks pretty damn obvious to me!"
Miguel interjected. "It's not her fault."
"I never said it was," Kai said, walking towards Miguel and pointing an accusing finger at Miguel's chest, "it's probably yours."
Miguel scoffed. "You don't deserve her!"
"Stay out of it!" Kai yelled, tears brimming.
"I don't think I will."
Kai, out of pure anger, launched a punch at Miguel, it connected with him but then Sam stepped in between the two of them.
"Kai," she said, sobbing, "I'm sorry, but please don't hurt him."
Kai rolled his eyes. "So you've cheated on your boyfriend and the only thing you care about is whether he gets hurt?"
Sam opened her mouth, but Kai beat her. Everyone could hear the hurt and heartbreak in his voice. Hours ago he was ecstatic that he had finally gotten his driver's license but now, he just wished that this day never happened and he wished he could turn back time.
"We're done Sam."
