16. Helping Miguel
In the next week or so between Kai's dismissal at the hospital and the time Miguel woke up from his coma, both Sam and Kai spent a lot of time reconnecting with each other. Although they had never done anything romantically, they spent a lot of their time rekindling the friendship and the bond that they shared before Kai left.
When Miguel Diaz finally woke up, there were shock waves around the town. The news that the teenage boy didn't succumb to his injuries made everyone, including Sam and Kai, both very relieved.
"Should we go visit him?" Sam asked Kai, one day when they were in Kai's bedroom watching a movie together.
Kai shrugged. He thought it would be respectful to check up on Miguel but after what he said to him, there was always going to be a feeling of doubt of whether Sam still liked him, he still hadn't made anything official with Sam so he didn't get the reassurance that he needed.
In the end, the two of them decided that maybe it would be best to visit Miguel. Sam even stopped by a shop to get a card for Miguel. When Kai read the card, there was a sinking, painful feeling in his chest.
You Octipi My Thoughts
Kai took once glance at the letter and rolled his eyes. Sam could see this and tried to reassure him.
"It's just an inside joke we have..." she told him but Kai didn't want to hear it.
"Whatever," he scoffed, "let's just go visit him."
When they arrived at the hospital, Kai stayed by the door as Sam walked in to greet Miguel.
"I hope it's ok with us just showing up." Sam told him.
Miguel glanced at Kai and they shared a look. Neither boy knew what to say to the other. A conversation happened between Sam and Miguel with Kai standing at by the doorway. The boy stared at the clock on the way, trying to tune them out. He didn't want to think of Miguel and Sam, together.
"Is that from Tory?" Miguel asked, pointing at the wound on Sam's arm.
"Yeah," Sam sighed, "it's really not that bad." she paused and added with a laugh. "Kinda makes me look tough!"
Miguel gulped. "I'm sorry about that Sam."
"You didn't do anything." Sam told him. "She's the one who decided to go crazy."
Miguel defended Tory. "Tory's had a rough life, her mom's sick and-"
Kai rolled his eyes, how could Miguel possibly be defending Tory right now. "-everyone's got a sob story," he told Miguel, "doesn't give them the right to be a bully."
Miguel glanced at Kai, there was a hint of hatred in his eyes. Kai could sense this and decided it was the appropriate time to apologise for Robby's actions.
"I'm sorry about Robby," he told Miguel, "you showed me mercy and for that I'm thankful."
Miguel nodded at Kai. "It's good."
"I'm really sorry Miguel," Sam said, tears in her eyes, "for all of this."
"It's uh...it's ok." Miguel told her.
"El serpiente!" a voice said from behind Kai. Everyone turned to see Hawk, making his way into the room. His face dropped when he saw both Kai and Sam.
"We're gonna go now." Sam told Miguel, walking towards the door.
"Alright, yeah." Miguel replied.
Both Kai and Sam made their way to the door and as they passed Hawk, he made a comment.
"You got some nerve coming here, after what happened."
"I don't care what you think," Sam replied, "I just want to help."
"I'm pretty sure you've done enough princess."
Kai stepped in front of Sam and faced Hawk. "She's just trying to help Hawk."
The boy with the mohawk glared at Kai. "Bullshit."
Hawk squared up to Kai and stupidly try to push him. Kai grabbed his arms and spoke in a deadly whisper. "I wouldn't pick a fight with me if I were you, after what happened you know you'll never win."
Kai let go of Hawk's arms and the boy scoffed before turning and walking into Miguel's room.
"Come on Sam," Kai said, putting an arm around the girl, "let's get out of here."
The two of them made their way back to the Hilton home, Sam was going on and on about how she wanted to raise money for Miguel's surgery. Kai listened and he knew that she had good intentions but the jealous part of him was slightly annoyed at how Sam was openly talking about her ex in front of him, when it was pretty obvious that there were still feelings between them that neither wished to share.
"Do a car wash or something." Kai suggested lazily.
Sam's eyes lit up. "That's a fantastic idea Kai!"
Kai looked flustered as Sam starting going on and on about how they were going to set the car wash up. Kai didn't think his idea was a good one and suggested it merely in case Sam accused him of not contributing. He did feel guilty for what had happened to him and he truly felt bad, but after what Miguel said about Sam loving him instead of Kai, there was doubt in Kai's mind to whether Sam would go back to Miguel, with him she had the certainty and stability being that he actually lived near her but with Kai there was the moving to and from Japan.
Kai's car wash idea quickly brought to reality and that weekend, Sam had rallied all the Miyagi-Do students as well as Moon and some of her friends to start a car wash that would fund towards Miguel's surgery.
There were so many people who were eager to help and Sam was doing a fantastic job of leading and telling everyone where they were meant to be.
"Fantastic job guys!" Sam cheered. "There's a line of cars along the block!"
Kai was standing with Demetri, the boy was wearing a t-shirt with some shorts whilst Kai decided to only wear shorts, leaving him shirtless. Yes, this got him many looks from the surrounding females and there were even a few instances where he was cleaning a car and he could feel eyes on him from within the car.
"Hey Moon," Sam said to the girl, "thanks for bringing the cheerleaders. They're definitely helping to attract customers."
Moon smiled. "And so is Kai over there."
She pointed to the shirtless boy, cleaning some windows with various female and male eyes on him.
Sam giggled to hide her jealousy. "I thought you were a feminist?"
"A sex-positive feminist. Our bodies are an expression."
Sam was confused but just nodded in response. She then walked away and made her way to Kai.
"Hey," she smiled at the boy, "how's everything going?"
The boy looked at her. On his torso she could see a few faint bruises and on his face was still the scar from Tory. He rested his arms on the hood of the car and looked up at Sam.
"It's good," he smiled, looking away at the car window momentarily before looking back, "you're doing a great job Sam."
"Hey!" a boy shouted from a car. "Can we be next?"
He was eying the cheerleaders and was extremely disappointed when Chris appeared, with his sponge and started scrubbing their windows. Kai noticed this and chuckled slightly. He turned to Sam. "I think I'm gonna help Chris out."
Sam nodded and waved as he walked away to the car filled with disappointed teenage boys.
What none of them noticed was Hawk and another pulling up to the car wash, Hawk with a very angry expression.
"They're just using Miguel as their poster child." he snarled. "He's not Miyagi-Do."
"And they think they can get away with that?" the other boy asked.
Hawk shook his head. "They won't."
Over by Sam, there was a TV reporter asking Sam questions, Kai watched from afar, proud of everything that Sam was doing.
"Students from West Valley High are volunteering today, washing cars for a worthy cause."
Sam spoke into the camera. "We've raised over a thousand dollars. Miyagi-Do is all about helping people."
"Didn't a Miyagi-Do student put Miguel Diaz in the hospital?"
"That was an accident," Sam said, her smile fading slightly. "at least I hope so. I just know that Miguel needs our help. We love you Miguel."
Hearing that from afar broke Kai slightly, even though he knew the context she was speaking in, it felt like she was choosing Miguel over him and that she loved Miguel and didn't love him.
He knew he loved her. He even told her just before he left hut she had already left.
Once the car wash was over, one of the Miyagi-Do students offered to take the money and keep it in a safe place. Kai offered to go with him but the other boy said it was only a one-man job.
"Wanna head back to mine?" Sam asked Kai as he grabbed a spare shirt from his backpack and put it on.
Kai had nothing else that he needed to do so he agreed, they took Sam's car back to her house. Kai was actually able to get his drivers license but he hadn't bothered to take the test. He was considering it and had actually talked to his parents about it because he disliked how he would always either have to get a taxi or ask someone else drive him.
"How quickly do you think I can get a driver's license?" Kai asked Sam once they had parked into the LaRusso driveway.
Sam looked at him as they both got out of their house. "Depends, do you already know how to drive?"
"Sort of..." Kai said, he had been in a car a couple of times as the driver but it wasn't for long.
"I'll teach you." Sam said, smiling at the boy. "Then we can get you your driver's license."
Kai smiled, this meant he would be able to drive and visit Sam whenever he wanted. He was thinking of a more long-term plan for them, he would come visit America and visit his parents and Sam during his holidays. He could live two lives, one in Japan and one in America.
As Sam was teaching Kai how to drive, the two of them didn't realise the crowd of Miyagi-Do students making their way to where the two of them were.
"Hey!" Chris said from the side of Sam's car. "Is your dad here?"
Sam shook her head. "No, he's at work. Why?"
"Cobra Kai took the money," Demetri sighed, "and..."
The same boy who offered to take the money earlier stepped from behind the group of people with cuts and blood and bruises on his face, his shirt was ripped.
"They kicked the fucking shit out of me!"
