12. On The Other Side

The second Sam LaRusso stepped out of the airport she knew she had made a big mistake. She had cut out and let go of the person who had shown her so much and made her feel so special in only so little time. The second she exited the airport, a wave of guilt and regret filled her but she could do nothing about it.

It was too late.

Getting an Uber home, Sam reflected on the memories that she had shared with Kai over the past month, apart from the end of their time together, the memories were extremely comforting.

Her life was a bit of a mess right now, Aisha wasn't speaking to her yet again because of Tory and the only thing keeping her occupied was Miyagi-Do karate. What was meant to be a perfect summer turned into a summer filled with broken friendships and heartbreak.

However, there were a few people that Sam felt like she could talk to, such as Robby and Moon. After Yasmine's departure to France, Moon and Sam actually became quite close and started talking a lot more.

"So, how are you feeling?" Moon asked Sam, whilst she was sitting on the girl's bed.

"What do you mean?" Sam asked, walking over to where Moon was.

Moon looked up at Sam. "Well with Kai, how are you feeling? After he left and all that."

"Well," Sam sighed, "I just feel like something's missing. I hate how we ended things."

Moon's eyes widened. "You two broke up?"

"We weren't officially anything...he never really asked me to be his girlfriend." Sam said quietly.

"You two were so cute together though!" Moon said.

Sam's face fell. She did consider her and Kai to have dated but they never really had the conversation. She missed him but she didn't want to admit that maybe it was her fault that hey weren't talking. After all, she was the one who said she never wanted to see him again.

That was a lie. She had been on his Instagram page many times and there were very rare posts and updates on his story, he seemed to of gone ghost since he left America. There really was no point in him having a phone anymore, he only really got it for him and Sam to be together long-distance.

"I'm never going to see him again." Sam said suddenly.

Moon looked at the girl, confused.

"I'm never going to see him again," Sam repeated, her face filling with sadness, "he probably hates me after everything I said to him but I miss him so much!"

"So text him," Moon suggested, "you still follow each other on Instagram right?"

Sam nodded, but she wasn't sure if she was ready to face him. There was a look on uncertainty on her face and Moon picked up on that.

"My mom's therapist always says, 'you can't hide from your heart.'" she told Sam.

Sam took these words into consideration and began thinking about all the fun memories she and Kai had. From when they first met each other at the All Valley to their Harry Potter movie marathon.

"Come on Sam," Moon told her, "let's go get some ice-cream or something!"

The two girls were just about to leave the LaRusso home when Moon pointed out something. "Aren't you going to change...?"

Sam looked down and realised she was wearing a hoodie and some shorts. "Oh yeah," she chuckled weakly, "kind of just forgot."

"We all do it sometimes," Moon laughed, "where'd you get that hoodie anyways?"

Sam looked and realised that she was wearing Kai's hoodie and that it still smelt like him, it smelt like vanilla and cinnamon and it was a comforting scent for Sam.

"Just...Robby let me borrow it." Sam lied.

Moon raised an eyebrow at her. "Moving on already?"

Sam sighed, she had dug a deep hole for herself with just a single lie. If she told him it was Kai's it would show she was still head over heels for him and Moon would just encourage her to text him, which was something she definitely didn't want to do. On the other hand, if she said she was moving on with Robby then she would just be lying to herself and feeling bad, it would feel like cheating on Kai even though the two of them weren't even together.

"I'm just going to change." Sam said before quickly running up the stairs to put an outfit on.

The two girls made their way to a local ice-cream parlour and when they arrived, they found themselves a seat.

"I could do with some ice-cream," Sam commented, "it's boiling hot outside."

Moon giggled as she picked up the menu and started browsing it. After placing their orders, both girls waited for their orders to arrive.

The two girls quickly got their ice-cream and started talking about both their lives.

"So what's been happening in your life, apart from Kai?" Moon asked.

Sam sighed. "Well, there's been a lot. First, there's been a lot of karate training with everyone and my dad seems really happy that he's got more than two people to train. Then me and Robby went to the Rollerrink," Moon looked at Sam, "as friends. Then Tory and Miguel show up because they're dating now and Miguel apologised for everything but Tory decides to be a bitch and push me over! Then I retaliate and trip her over but the manager only saw that so me and Robby got kicked out. Then Robby's mom showed up and said she was going to Rehab so that was pretty crazy. Oh, and then we had that party remember, where you were with your girlfriend and Hawk got pretty mad and then me and Tory had that drinking contest, oh and guess what happened after!"

Moon, who was just about able to keep up with Sam's rant, replied. "What happened?"

"Me and Miguel kissed."

Moon gasped. "But I thought you were still in love with Kai?"

"Love is a strong word Moon," Sam said, eating a spoonful of her ice-cream, "we were both pretty drunk but I didn't feel anything."

If Sam was being honest, when she kissed Miguel she didn't feel those butterflies or fireworks she did when she kissed Kai and in all honesty, she really wished it was Kai she was kissing.

It was a drunken kiss, it meant nothing.

"Holy crap," Moon said, "I did not know that went down at the party."

Sam chuckled. "That's cause you were too busy kissing your girlfriend, Hawk was not impressed by the way."

"He's an asshole now," Moon commented, "I'm glad that Demetri guy called him out."

The two girls shared a laugh before finishing their ice-cream.

Over in Okinawa, Kai had just finished training and had checked Instagram only to see Moon had posted a video of her and Sam having an ice-cream.

"You need to stop stalking her," Takeshi said from behind Kai, scaring the boy, "you're getting a bit obsessed."

Kai sighed. "I just miss her y'know."

"Then go visit her." Takeshi said, like it was the most simple solution in the entire world.

"Visit her?" Kai repeated. "And leave you and Sensei behind?"

Takeshi chuckled. "I'm sure we can live without you for a couple weeks."

Kai groaned, he didn't want to leave the two of them behind just to pursue a girl, it felt and it seemed selfish to him. The prospect of flying back to his hometown for a period of time, leaving Takeshi and Sensei Yazuko on their own whilst he was in another country seemed like a daunting experience.

"Do you want to come?" Kai asked hopefully.

Takeshi shook his head regretfully. "I'm going to stay with Otosan."

"Who are you going to hang out with?" Kai joked.

Takeshi rolled his eyes. "I have other friends you know. I just choose to hang out with you."

"Will Sensei be ok with it?" Kai wondered.

Sensei Yazuko had just appeared in the room. "Will I be ok with what?"

Kai stood up and turned to face his Sensei. "I wanted to...I wanted to go back to America."

Sensei Yazuko chuckled. "For the girl?"

"Sensei, if you don't want me to go, I am fine with it." Kai assured the older man.

"I have no objections Kai-San," Yazuko said, "I understand why you want to go. I will support you."

Kai's eyes lit up. "Thank you Sensei."

"Just promise me one thing though," Sensei Yazuko said whilst Kai nodded, "train with Daniel LaRusso and promise me you fix things with her."

"Maybe even bring her here." Takeshi said with a laugh.

Kai nodded and after rushing out to the centre of Okinawa to book his tickets and purchase something for Takeshi, he made his way back to the house.

"What's this?" Takeshi asked as Kai handed him a box.

"A phone," Kai told him, "so we can still talk to each other every day. I know our times will be different but I will always make an effort to talk to you and Sensei."

Takeshi smiled gratefully and he took the box and unboxed his new mobile phone. "You gotta teach me how to use this."

And that is what Kai did, for the next hour he helped Takeshi Yazuko set up his phone and add Kai's name in his contacts as well as following Kai on Instagram and creating an account.

That following evening, Kai was packing for his trip to America to try and make things right with Sam. He took out his phone and sent a text to his mother even thoiugh he knew it was very early morning in California.

Hey mom, I'm coming over on Sunday to stay for a bit. It's just me. Hope that's ok.

After sending that message, Kai placed his phone on charge and finished packing. He brought his Gi and his signature tiger jacket as well as various other clothes. After chucking everything into his suitcase and zipping everything up, Kai double checked everything on his ticket and made sure everything was correct.

He would arrive in California on Sunday morning leaving him ready to settle in before joining everyone else with the return of the school term. To fill up his days, Kai would ask his mom to let him attend the West Valley school whilst he was in America.

Once everything was finalised, Kai said goodnight to both Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi and got into bed with only one thing in his mind.

Kai Hilton was coming back to America.
