10. The Way Back Home

"Do you want to come over later?" Sam asked Kai over Facetime one day.

Kai nodded. "Sure thing, I'll come over once I've finished training."

Once Kai hung up and ended the call, he made his way to the Hilton back garden where Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi were waiting.

"What took you so long Kai-San?" Sensei asked.

"He was too busy talking to his girlfriend." Takeshi laughed.

Kai bowed to his Sensei. "Sorry Sensei, I am here now."

Sensei nodded at the boy and set both Kai and Takeshi off, doing their warm-up exercises.

Once they were finished, both boys were drenched in sweat. With the sun shining down on them plus the vigorous exercise they were undergoing, both boys were looking extremely fatigued.

"I'm gonna take a shower and then I'm gonna go over to Sam's house." Kai told Takeshi as the two of them walked back inside.

Takeshi nodded. "Remember we gotta pack tonight."

Kai nodded and fist-bumped his friend before walking upstairs to shower and clean himself up before going over to the LaRusso home. Kai, Takeshi and Sensei Yazuko were leaving tomorrow and Kai still hadn't gathered the courage to tell Sam, things were going so well between them and he didn't want to screw it up.

On the way there, he stopped by a local store to get Sam some flowers, yes it was cliche and sort of cringy, but Kai wanted to get the girl something to show how special she was to him. Once he arrived, he knocked on the door only to be greeted by Robby.

"Oh hey Robby," Kai said dejectedly, "Sam ask you to come over?"

Robby chuckled. "No, uh, I kind of live here."

Kai's eyes widened. "Oh, I didn't know that."

"Don't worry about it, Sam's in her room." Robby laughed.

Kai took off his shoes and made his way upstairs to Sam's room, flowers still in hand. He knocked on Sam's door before walking in.

"Hey," Kai said with a smile, holding the flowers towards her, "I got you something."

Sam looked up from her bed and made her way towards Kai. "Flowers? For me?"

Kai nodded as Sam gratefully took them and pressed a soft and delicate kiss on his lips.

"What do you want to do then?" Sam asked him, sitting on her bed.

Kai made his way and sat next to her on her bed, he opened his mouth to tell her about his inevitable departure and return to Okinawa but Sam interrupted him.

"I know! Let's watch a movie." she said excitedly, grabbing her laptop and opening up Netflix. She snuggled up on her bed and put herself underneath the duvet, motioning for Kai to join her. Making himself comfortable next to her, he wrapped an arm around her as he looked at Sam's screen.

"What do you want to watch?" Sam asked, looking into Kai's blue eyes.

Kai shrugged. "It's up to you, I'll watch anything."

In the end, the two of them started the Harry Potter movies, something that Kai had never watched before.

"That ginger dude," Kai commented, "Ron Weasley or whatever, he seems like a real idiot."

Sam giggled. "He gets with Hermione."

"Spoiler alert!" Kai said, playfully hitting her. "You just ruined the whole plot for me!"

"Stop being so dramatic Kai," Sam laughed, "Ron and Hermione aren't the plot, there's stuff much more interesting than that."

"I suppose, what movie are we on now?" Kai asked.

Sam clicked on the next movie in the series. "Goblet of Fire. Do you want anything to eat?"

"Nah, I'm good, let's watch this." Kai said, his eyes fixed on Sam's laptop screen.

During the movie marathon, Sam had cuddled herself into Kai and her head was now resting on his chest with his arms around her. Occasionally the two would share a kiss, but for now, they were both focusing on the movie.

By the time they had started 'Half-Blood Prince', Kai finally realised the time and remembered that he needed to be back at the Hilton home, packing and getting ready for his flight tomorrow.

"I should get going now," Kai said, not wanting to move because both him and Sam were extremely comfortable, " it's getting a bit late isn't it?"

"Stay Kai," Sam begged, "you can stay over and we can finish the movie."

"Stay?" Kai repeated. "Where would I sleep?"

"In the guest room or here." Sam said smiling at him.

The offer was extremely tempting and Kai couldn't bear to say no to Sam, he was just going to have to speedily pack tomorrow morning before his flight.

Before they carried on, Kai took out his phone and texted his dad, since Takeshi didn't have a phone he would have to trust his father to relay the message to him.

Hey dad, can you tell Takeshi I'm staying at the LaRusso's tonight.

Kai pressed send and pocketed his phone again, giving Sam a quick kiss on her forehead before continuing to watch the Harry Potter film. He noticed that Sam was shivering so he took off the hoodie he was wearing and gave it to her.

"Can I keep it?" Sam asked eagerly.

Kai chuckled and nodded. "Anything for you."

Sam kissed Kai's cheek before they continued watching the movie.

It was early morning when they had finally finished the entire series, there had been a mixture of emotions. Anger, sadness, annoyance and the bittersweet realisation that the story had come to it's end.

"Wow..." Kai said, "that was quite possibly the best movie series I have ever watched."

Sam laughed. "It's my favourite series."

She then yawned and snuggled closer into Kai, the girl was feeling extremely tired. "I think I'm going to sleep now." she told him.

"I'll go to the guest room then." Kai replied, about to make his way out the bed but Sam pulled him back.

"Stay." she whispered, pulling him close to her.

Unable to say no to her Kai smiled and held her close. "Goodnight Sam." he said, giving her a soft kiss.

"Goodnight Kai." she said with a soft smile, her eyes already closed.

Within minutes, she was fast asleep.

The next morning, Kai woke up with Sam's head buried on his chest with his arms around her. Under the duvet was extremely warm and Kai groaned slightly as he adjusted to the light shining through Sam's window. He removed himself from the bed and looked out the window.

"Sam! Sam!" he said quickly once he looked out the window and saw the LaRusso's back garden.

Sam groaned as she opened her eyes. "What is it Kai?"

"It's your garden!" Kai exclaimed. "Something's happened."

The two of them rushed downstairs and saw the wrecked LaRusso' garden, the Bonsai trees had been knocked over and there was toilet paper everywhere. Spray paint had been strayed over certain structures and when they looked inside, it was even worse.

Everything was a mess and everything had been tipped over.

"They even took Mr Miyagi's medal of honour." Daniel said to Robby, as the two of them crouched over a box that seemed to of been broken into.

"Mr LaRusso..." Kai said, trying to offer his condolences.

"Kai?" Daniel asked, confused. "Why are you here?"

Luckily for Kai, he didn't have to answer as Sam's voice came from outside. "Dad?"

The three of them rushed outside to where Sam was and what they saw was spray paint on a yellow car that had a large significance to Daniel. One the body of the car were the words 'Cobra Kai never dies!!' in red spraypaint.

The anger that surged through Kai at that moment was indescribable. The Cobras had gone to the extent of destroying another Dojo, and for what? Why couldn't both Dojos live in peace and unity?

Daniel LaRusso angrily got into the car and slammed the driver's door shut.

"Mr LaRusso?" Robby questioned.

"Dad, where are you going?" Sam asked, but he didn't reply. He drove off into the distance leaving the three kids.

"Sam...I gotta go." Kai said quickly, guilty that he had to leave them in a situation like this.

Sam looked at Kai with pleading eyes. "Why? Can't you help us clean this up."

Kai shook his head regretfully. "I can't...Sam..." he whispered these next words, "I have a flight to catch."

Unfortunately, Sam had heard the words and he face fell. It was now filled with sadness and even anger. "You're leaving?" she said.

Kai nodded.

"And you didn't feel like I deserved to know?" Sam said angrily.

Kai opened his mouth. "Sam I wanted to-"

"-screw that Kai!" Sam shouted. "If you wanted to tell me you could've told me in those last dozen times we've hung out!"

"Sam-"

"Save it!" she said, tears falling down her face. "This is why I didn't want to like you Kai! I knew this was going to happen! Get out of here! I don't want to see your face ever again!"

Sadness consuming Sam, he nodded and walked away, not looking behind and trying to fight the urge to cry. He quickly made his way back home and when Takeshi scolded him and even tried to make a joke about how Kai stayed the night at Sam's, Kai ignored him and hastily packed his things.

"Kai, what's wrong?" Takeshi asked.

Kai ignored him and finished shoving that last piece of clothing into his suitcase. "Let's just get out of here."

Without questioning any further, the two boys met up with their Sensei and then waited for the taxi to arrive. Kai's parents told Kai regretfully that they had a meeting and couldn't send them off but both of them wished their son well until the next time they saw him and promised that they would send stuff over.

Dragging his suitcase and placing it in the trunk of the taxi, Kai got into the car and sat in the back with Takeshi whilst Sensei Yazuko sat at the front in the passenger seat.

Kai spoke to no one on the way there and quietly checked his ticket in, once everything was settled the three of them made their way to the gate and every once in a while, Kai would look back, thinking that Sam would be there.

Just before he crossed the gate into security, there was a voice behind him.

"Kai!"

Kai turned and saw Sam, his face lit up and his heart warmed, he thought that they would be able to fix things and continue dating long-distance.

Oh how he was wrong.

Sam had an angry and hurt expression on her face.

"Sam..." Kai began.

Sam interrupted him. "Don't bother calling me or texting me Kai, we're done. We were nothing in the first place. I hope I never have to see you again."

That was what she came here for? All the way to the airport just so she could drive even more daggers through his already broken heart? He realised that she still had his hoodie but didn't want to comment on it or ask for it back, the mood was already tense and Kai's flight was soon.

"Is that all you wanted to say." Kai asked, confused to why she had to do that to him.

Sam's expression softened. "I just wanted to say goodbye as well..."

"Kai come on!" Takeshi shouted. "We have to go!"

Kai waved at Sam. "Well, thank you for the best month of my life Sam. I'm sorry it had to end this way."

Ignoring the immense pain in his heart, he turned and began walking through the gate, ready to leave everything behind.

"Sam! I love you." Kai said suddenly, turning back hoping that Sam had heard him.

But she didn't. She had already left.

Kai sighed and continued walking, Takeshi noticed the heartbroken expression on his friend's face.

"Come on Kai," Takeshi comforted, "we're going home."

Kai sighed. Hopefully he could wake up and find out that these last month was some sort of twisted nightmare, and that he didn't get his heart broken.

He loved Sam LaRusso, he loved her here in California and he would still love her thousands of miles away in Japan.

Nothing would ever change that.
