Retired

~Ryan~
I had decided to retire Repossess to Northview Stallion Station, home of near Triple Crown-winner Smarty Jones and my old friend To Win and Repeat. My dad had worked there and knew the stablehands personally. Also, I figured Pennsylvania deserved another good racehorse stand at stud there.

I led Repossess over to Paul, the man who was responsible for taking care of Repossess until he died. As I handed the lead rope to Paul, I patted Repossess on the neck. I would see him next month, but it felt like a permanent goodbye.

"You know you can come see him anytime?"
"Yes, thank you. Take good care of him, please."
"Only the best."

With that, I walked to my car and drove off, leaving Repossess to his infinite, hard-earned hay and sunlight.

~Repossess~

The strong man in red led me to a big stall. It had windows facing out and iron bars over openings facing in. A shortish chestnut horse looked at me and neighed.
"Who are you? Are you new here?"
"I'm new. I'm Repossess. I won the Triple Crown and the Breeders' Cup...Classic."
"Well, hi, Repossess, I'm Smarty Jones. I barely lost the Triple Crown. How'd you win it?"
"Uhhh...I kept running? I broke my leg at the finish but I got up and kept going. So, what's this retirement thing about?"
"Laying in the sun, playing in your field, eating, sleeping, and occasional business...welcome to Laziness."

I wondered when some bad person would take me away from this wonderful place and send me back to race against the slow horses.

That bad person never came.

Repossess because a semi-influential sire in the horse racing industry. There was a film about him, and many experts expressed his semblance to Seabiscuit. The story of Repossess is, on the most basic level, a different take on the story of Seabiscuit, another (but real) champion.

Statues at Parx and Belmont were erected in his honor, and a grade 2 stakes race was named the Repossess Handicap, held at Parx.
