Back on Track

~Repossess~

In April, Dreamer was shipped off to Churchill Downs, at least that's where he said he was going. I had no idea that he would win such a big race (see Secretariat1's story Racing to the Finish).

They sent me out for a light workout over the track. I quickly recognized it. It was the place where I had broken my leg years before. I balked, and my rider nearly flew over my head. Eventually, he convinced me to just gallop around once.

When I got back to my stall, I stood dejectedly in the corner. A flood memories came back to me and flashed through my head. Running, and loving it. Then going down, the ground rushing up to meet me. Pushing myself up and lunging toward the finish, because all my life, I had always finished the race. The man with the needle, and rearing to get away. The long, pain-filled drive to the horse hospital. I munched ferociously on my hay, trying to calm myself down. I heard voices and flicked my ears toward them, listening without looking up.

"He recognized the track, Sir, I swear. It took me 15 minutes to get him to go around once," today's rider said worriedly.
"He's just nervous about being at a track. He knows it means time to race," the familiar voice of Hunter replied.
"No, Sir, he knows this is where it happened. I don't think he will race here."
"He's gonna have to, cuz we don't have the transportation to take him anywhere else right now. It's almost May, everyone else from our farm is with Daydreamer."

The voices faded as they walked away, and I knew that I had no choice in the matter. I was going to be racing here at Belmont Park again. I just hoped nothing bad happened to me.

Sorry this is a short one, guys! I haven't had much time to write, but I feel bad about not updating! Feel free to comment if you have any ideas about future events in the story! Thanks!
