2. Scene

Two hours later, Laura Constantine strode over the median of the Burke Gilman Trail. Her flats and pant legs soaked quickly with water from the damp grass. She ducked under the yellow plastic caution tape at the crime scene, a large camera with an attached flash on a sling around her neck.

She nodded to the police officer at the scene, standing in front of a police cruiser, the lights scattering a halo of red and blue in the misty air. She pulled her black leather FBI badge out of her suit pocket, and flipped it open. "Laura Constantine, FBI."

The officer nodded, rain dripping from his baseball cap.

Laura circled, taking deliberate photos of the lifeless body, replaying the morning's briefing.

James Campbell, whistleblower, 43 years of age. Informed the FBI of missing units out of blood shipments from Vitalink, a blood donation and aid organization.

She saw a small glint in the grass. She knelt down, pulled an evidence collection bag from her pocket, and picked up a small, shattered piece of a turn signal lens with gloved hands.

She scanned her eyes up the street and turned to the officer. "Any doorbell or traffic cams on the block?"

He nodded. "Two front doors on the block. We've requested the footage."

Laura nodded and circled the body again. She saw something, crouched next to his leg, and hiked his soaked shorts. In his dark leg hair were two small, deep, circular puncture wounds. She took a photo, and made a note to flag it for the autopsy.
