Parting Words

I lost                                          under a pile of past mistakes;

             myself

suffocating in your dark,

my mind is going blank.

To stay here feels like suicide;

to leave is a blind walk off the plank—

both hands tied behind my back!

But I sense happiness, somewhere,

and in my mind my bags are packed.

Struggling to find myself,

my heart, my soul, and more,

I feel your hands come swoop me up

to rescue me once more.

Now I'm face-to-face with you

and those eyes that I adore.

You're so sweet —so full of love!

and...

here I come:

a comet wrenching  your core:

"I love you!

Always have and always will,

and maybe in the future

we can mend the love we feel;

but right now I need happiness,

before that love has hope to heal.

I don't know what the future holds

but I know one thing for sure:

you are the best love I've ever had,

but,

what I need is something more."

All these words I said to him,

as I watched—

the only home I've ever known—

crumble

down

to the floor. . . .
