chapter twenty-six ↠ illicit
written in Caspian's pov
I checked all the drawers, all the dressers, all the mattresses, all the cabinets, and all the cushions. Finally, in Liv's room, I found a gun. It was loaded. Even though I was snooping, I took the gun with me into my room.
I studied it for a moment, sticking it into the back of my coat pocket. When I pushed my dusty blinds apart, the street was vacant.
Perfect.
I can't tell anyone, I thought.
I'm doing this for us, I thought.
I checked the hallway before I went downstairs, not that Liv would even notice if she wasn't at school. I casually walked out of the house wearing a suit and tie, dress pants and dress shoes. A loaded gun in my jacket pocket.
I just kept walking down the sidewalk as my feet kept forming blisters from the tight shoes rubbing against my skin. The city got livelier the more I progressed into it, noticing people enjoying the sun and warm wind for the season.
"Fuck," I mumbled, reaching the jewelry store. I could literally smell the money from inside. Pulling open the door, a man with a shiny bald head greeted me.
"What can I do for you today, sir?"
I could tell he was put off by my appearance in a suit, but I smiled and tried to match his tone and personality. "Can I speak to Jim?" I asked very politely. I felt like an idiot from smiling so much.
"Sure thing, right this way sir," The bald man escorted me through the store and into the back room. He pulled out a chair for me to sit down and I nodded before he walked out of the room like a trained soldier. The desk had "Jim Crawford" engraved in small letters over a metallic plate. Underneath that, it said "Store Manager".
I waited for Jim to come back from the bathroom, his head balding just like the man who greeted me.
"Well, look who it is!" Jim and his balding head exclaimed once he entered the room and recognized me, a sly, fake smile on his chapped red lips.
"What can we do for you today?"
Jim fixed his tie and took a seat on the big leather chair facing his desk. He folded his large hands and placed them on the surface of the desk, looking straight towards me with one raised eyebrow.
I hated his smug expression, as if he knew the answer to every world problem and people were bowing down to him left and right.
Without further hesitation, I pulled my gun out and pointed it at his head. He laughed and kept his one eyebrow raised, his nose crinkling in what seemed like delight.
"Don't mention this to anyone, Alright? I know my dad has helped you out before but now it's your turn to help me out." I pressed the gun firmer against his speckled, bald forehead.
He tried to back away but I smacked him with the gun, causing him to wince and keep his head still.
I reached around his desk, pulling open a compartment which held a diamond ring the size of a marble. I carefully pulled it out, wrapping it in my fist. Jim quickened his breath and watched as I slipped the diamond into my pocket, removing the gun from his head.
"Are we clear?" I asked one more time, sticking the gun into my pocket again.
Jim nodded and sat back in his stupid leather chair. "Leave," he mumbled angrily and I did as he said.
I kept my hand over my pocket to make sure the ring wasn't going anywhere as I approached the pawn shop down the road. Inside, there were huge lines and angry people yelling at every corner. The place was damn hot, too.
I waited in the jewelry line and counted the minutes until it was my turn.
The man behind the counter gave me $75,000.
Jackpot.
