"I'm Spider-man!" Peter yelled angrily, kicking a can away.
"Not anymore," A calm voice behind him said. He turned around and saw someone he didn't remember seeing before.
"Who are you?" he questioned unsurely - he had just revealed his identity, and this guy didn't seem the least bit phased.
"I'm Spiderman," the guy introduced.
"Jake," Peter realised. The guy smirked and nodded.
"What did you do?" Peter demanded.
"Listen, Pete, you've been Spider-man for a while, you've had a perfect life. It's my turn," he explained.
"My life is not perfect," Peter argued.
"And that's exactly why I deserve this more than you do. I'm nothing, Peter. Yeah, I can do some party-tricks, a memory spell here and there, but this? This week with the Avengers? It's been the best time of my life," he explained with a genuinely happy smile.
"My parents are dead, my uncle is dead, it's just me and my aunt," Peter admitted; "At least you have a family."
"At least you have a family that doesn't abuse you," Jake shot back. A silence spread amongst them.
"I'm sorry to hear that," Peter said honestly.
"Sorry about your parents," Jake replied.
"This isn't the way, you know," Peter continued; "Reverse the spell, I'll introduce you to them. The right way." Jake shook his head.
"It's too late."
"What do you mean?"
"The only way to get their memory back is for me to die. And you were right when you said what you did. You are a hero... That's why I know you won't kill me," Jake admitted.
"I am tempted," Peter argued.
"You're not," Jake said confidently; "You're a good guy. And you have superpowers!"
"I'm a good guy, but I was before the powers, too," Peter pointed out, sounding surprisingly calm.
"Maybe so, but let's face it, if it weren't for your powers, you would've never become friends with the Tony Stark, the entire group of Avengers! And if it wasn't because I could fool them into thinking I was you, or you were me, or whatever, I'd still be living with my abusive dad!" Jake cried out.
"I'm sorry," Peter repeated; "I need to know, though... I know why you did it, but how?"
Jake shrugged, looking to his feet.
"I heard Spider-man was dead. Everybody was mourning, everybody missed him. I figured the Avengers, his friends, they'd miss him the most. And, they're heroes, for crying out loud!" Jake said.
"I saw my chance. I ran away and dropped by the tower, changed out their memories of you with me, convinced Tony to think I deserved the suit, your suit, back, and suddenly I was living a life I couldn't keep up with."
"What do you mean?" Peter asked, slowly sitting down on the curb.
"You're a superhero, Peter," Jake pointed out, sitting down next to him; "I thought, I thought with Tony as your mentor, it'd all be in the suit. I thought you were just a regular boy, but you're not. You're not a superhero because of them, you would've been a hero even without those stupid powers. You're smart and you're kind and you're everything I wanted to be. I thought the spell would affect you, too, I thought you'd just go back to your life. I didn't realise yours wasn't perfect," he admitted.
Do I actually feel bad for him? Peter asked himself.
Yeah... I do
"We can make this right," Peter mentioned.
"How so?"
"Tell them the truth. I'll help. They don't need their memory back, but they deserve honesty, Jake," Peter pointed out.
"Okay," Jake agreed before sighing; "I really messed up this time, didn't I?"
"You didn't mean to."
"What if they kill me?" he said quietly, almost a whisper; "To get their memory back?"
"They won't. They're heroes, Jake. And as can you be. As you. You clearly have powers, too, maybe Fury will decide you could be useful on the team," Peter suggested with a shrug.
"I'm not sure I want to be a hero anymore," he admitted.
"I get that. It's hard," Peter agreed.
"I lied. I totally wanna be a hero."
"Me too," Peter admitted with a grin.
"Come on, let's go make this right," he continued, standing up and reaching his hand towards Jake.
"Promise me something," Jake dared. Peter said nothing.
"Someday, we'll be heroes together." Peter nodded.
"You'll be a hero," he promised.
"You already are. Does that count as cheating, then?" Jake joked at he stood up. A vibration came from his pocket, and he quickly got his phone out, looking at the screen, furrowing his brows before answering the call.
"This is Jake."
"I'm on my way," he said before ending the call in one quick motion.
"They're under attack," he informed Peter, who quickly grabbed a hold of Jake.
"You better hold on," he warned as he reached his arm out, ready to swing across town as the hero he was.
Weird question but does anyone have any suggestions for romantic songs or just songs with romantic lyrics?
