I was incredibly late due to my flight being delayed and I hated myself that I would miss Marisol's wedding ceremony because of it but at least I was going to be at the reception. With a fast pace, I was walking over to my brothers who were talking to someone - Luís. A smile spread across my face, then I started fixing my dress shirt that I had hurried to put on in the car. I wasn't looking where I was going, so when I collided with someone full force, it took me by surprise. My heart skipped some beats in the second I realised who I had bumped into. "Caye." I breathed down at her. She looked stunning, exactly like the last time I had seen her in person. Her twenties had done her good. When she looked up at me, I lost myself in her blue eyes the way I had always done. Memories were flooding my mind but they were interrupted when she grabbed Luís' arm and dragged him away from me. I was speechless and unable to move. Of course, I had tried to stay in contact with her, she had been my best friend but she had ignored Bernie and Bysael and Luís had been mad at me for hurting his sister for a long time. Cayetana had also changed her number and so I had no way of contacting her anymore.
At the reception we had been seated close to the bride and groom, Cayetana and Luís were sitting further away but I had the perfect view. She was constantly on her phone, left the table every now and then to take phone calls and I caught myself watching her almost the entire evening. She barely talked to anyone, let Luís do everything and over all looked like she wanted to be anywhere but at that reception. "Habla con ella." (Talk to her.) I heard Bernie say, making me look away from her for the first time that night. "¿Qué me quieres decir? ¿Lamentas haberte roto el corazón hace 10 años? Me odia, Bernie." (What do you want me to say? Sorry that I broke your heart 10 years ago? She hates me, Bernie.) I told my brother and sighed. "¿Puedes culparla?" (Can you blame her?) he questioned. I slowly shook my head and looked back to her seat that was empty. Immediately I started scanning the room to find her in a quiet corner not far from the bar, talking on the phone with someone. She looked like she was in a heated argument. Since my drink was empty, I got up and walked over to the bar. It was somewhat my chance to talk to her and even if I didn't, I at least had a reason to walk into that direction. Cayetana didn't pay me attention, she was very obviously fighting with someone on the phone. I acted like I didn't see her when I leaned myself onto the counter of the bar. "Oliver, I told you, I'm coming after the reception. They haven't even served dinner yet." she said into her phone, sounding desperate to convince the person she was talking to that she'd be home soon. "Can you for once let me enjoy one day with my brother without constantly checking up on me?" I heard her say in annoyance. I could hear that the person she was talking to got louder. Cayetana rubbed the bridge of her nose between her thumb and index finger. She looked anything but happy. Whoever she was talking to was going off on her like crazy. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I could hear that it was a man and that he was furious. I took the glass of wine the girl behind the bar placed on the counter in front of me and turned towards her. She was still listening to the rant on the phone, pacing back and forth with her eyes closed. I could tell that she was tired of it. In the second that she opened her eyes again, I saw that she was suppressing tears by constantly looking up. When the person hung up on her, Cayetana lowered her phone and started fanning her face. Her chest was moving up and down with the deep breaths she was taking. I'm guessing she was trying to calm herself down. After a few more seconds, she started walking towards her table again. When she spotted me, she froze. "¿Estás bien?" (Are you alright?) I asked concerned because she looked like she was anything but okay. She eyed me up and down and pushed a strand of hair that had fallen out of her bun behind her ear. "That's none of your business." she gave back and walked past me, her voice full of anger and hatred. Just as I had thought, she was being cold towards me. Heck, she even refused to switch to my native language. "¡Caye, espera!" (Caye, wait!) I called after her. following her through the rows of chairs and tables. "My name's Cayetana, not Caye." she gave back. A small stinging pain erupted in my chest. It was the nickname I had given her and that I had used ever since we had met and now she didn't want me to use it. I kept on following her but had a hard time because she was extremely fast. "What do you want?" she questioned, still walking through the rows, when she noticed that I wasn't gonna give up. We passed my table on our way to hers, both of my brothers stared at us. "Tenemos que hablar." (We need to talk.) I said, causing her to stop in her tracks. She turned around and glared up at me. "There is nothing for you and me to talk about. You said everything I needed to hear 10 years ago." Cayetana snapped at me, then turned back around and continued walking. Luís was staring at as with a raised eyebrow. It took exactly one glance from Cayetana to signalise him that they were leaving. I stopped walking and watched as they left, my heart aching.
