I.
I was looking at myself in the mirror of my parent's house. They had kept the house on Puerto Rico because they frequently visited the island. I had never returned after moving away until this day. An old friend of mine was getting married in our hometown and since I hadn't wanted to be a dick, I had told her I would come. A lot of memories were flashing through my mind as I eyed the dress I was wearing. My old bed was still standing where it stood before we had left, the marks on my door from where my parents had documented my growth were still there and the room looked like my teenage self had never left. The golden engagement ring on my finger was standing out against the dark green color of my dress. It was the first time that I was travelling without my fiancé and I just knew that it bothered him, so I had agreed on flying back right after the wedding reception. My brother who was also invited was sitting on my bed, he was my "date" and he had been chewing on his lower lip almost all morning. I knew Luís and he only did that when he had bad news. It was clear that he was trying to avoid telling me whatever he had to say and it was eating him up inside.
"Spill it, Luís." I said and turned towards him.
"Hm?" he responded, looking at me in surprise. He avoided eye contact and started fumbling around with the buttons on his dress shirt.
"Something's bothering you, what is it?" I questioned and walked over to my bed as well.
"No sé de que estás hablando." (I don't know what you're talking about.) he mumbled and cleared his throat.
Ever since I had moved to New York, I had refused to speak Spanish. I still understood it but I always acted like I didn't know any of it. My mother had taught me English from a young age and so I barely had any accent.
"You always avoid looking at me when you got bad news, so spill it." I said, grabbing my purse that was laying next to him.
"Um, so I didn't want to tell you because I knew, you wouldn't want to go if I did..." he started.
"Tell me what?" I wanted to know.
My heart was racing because I was getting scared. I thought that he had really bad news like the last time he had acted this way. Our dog had been run over when I was 14 and guess who had had to tell me and had tried to avoid this conversation for as long as possible? Exactly, Luís. When my grandma died, he had behaved weirdly all day and now that he was doing it again, I just knew that something wasn't right and it must've been bad.
"Marisol invited Benito." he quickly said, closing his eyes to not see my reaction.
I hadn't heard that name in years and I had been glad about it because the memories of the one day that had made me turn my back against my island immediately surfaced.
"And?" I asked, hoping he would tell me that due to his fame, a concert or whatever reason, he wouldn't be able to come.
"He's coming. He texted me." Luís mumbled in hopes I wouldn't hear him.
He slowly opened his eyes to look at me. I let myself sink onto the bed next to him and took some deep breaths. Unlike me, my brother had not broken contact to the Martínez boys. He was still friends with Bernie, Benito and Bysael and frequently hung out with them. Although he had told me that they had asked about me a lot, especially in the beginning, I had never tried to reach out to any of them. Bysael and Bernie had wanted to talk to me - after all they had seen me as an older sister they could ask for advice for years - but I had left them on read. It wasn't fair to them, I knew that, so I had also felt incredibly guilty about it.
During the ceremony, I was sitting in the far back next to Luís, making myself as small as possible. A lot of people had approached me since nearly all of them had known me since birth but I had stayed reserved and nodded in a friendly manner. Luís had done most of the talking. From the corner of my eye, I spotted the Martínez brothers in the front. Benito was not there yet, I could tell by the empty seat next to Bernie. Both him and Bysael had already spotted me and they had glanced over to Luís and me every now and then. All I could think of during the whole thing was that maybe Benito wasn't going to show up until I had left because I knew that seeing him would open wounds. As soon as the ceremony was over, I hurried out of the chapel and towards the car. Luís was going to talk to Bernie and Bysael and I decided to wait for him in the driver's seat. I wasn't prepared mentally for anyone trying to have a conversation with me. My phone was more interesting than anything happening outside of the car. I had two missed calls from my fiancé. Oliver was a very protective and mistrusting person and so I sighed, when I saw his messages. I dialled his number to let him know that the ceremony was over and that I would hop onto the plane as soon as the dinner was over.
"Why didn't you answer your goddamn phone?" he answered after it had rang once. He had been waiting for my call.
"Oliver, I'm at a wedding. You called me in the middle of the ceremony." I told him calmly. "How long does it take to say I do? Two hours? Certainly not!" he spat.
He didn't believe me and I was already used to it, so I closed my eyes and let out a silent sigh.
"Do you want to talk to the bride? Or my brother?" I asked, knowing that he wanted proof, so I slowly opened the car door.
Oliver was from New York and didn't speak a single word Spanish, so I just knew he was gonna say Luís' name. As he did, I got out of the car and approached my brother who was happily chatting with Bernie and Bysael. Their faces lit up, when they noticed me but I ignored both of them and tapped my brother's shoulder. Luís knew about Oliver and he knew exactly how my face looked like when I needed him to convince my fiancé, so he held out his hand for my phone as soon as he realised that I was holding it onto my ear.
"Hi, Oli." he greeted him friendly. I waited patiently and listened.
It was always the same: some smalltalk, Luís would tell him exactly what happened and then he would send pictures to proof it. While he was on the phone, I turned to walk back to the car and immediately crashed into someone's chest.
"Caye." I heard someone breath.
The voice sent shivers down my spine. As I looked up, I was greeted by two very surprised looking brown eyes. My brother who had now finished talking to Oliver, tapped my shoulder which snapped me out of my state of shock. Without saying a word, I grabbed Luís' arm and started dragging him towards the car.
