Chapter Six
SPARA POV
We both floated on our backs debating our next course of action.
"Let's just stay here. Our captors have to get us eventually, right? Once we stop playing their stupid game they won't have a choice but to end all this." I suggested, basking in the sunlight. Oh how I missed the outdoors.
"Let's not," Jonah replied back. "Unlike some people, not everyone can breath underwater."
I wasn't looking at him but the eyerolling was apparent in the tone of his voice.
"Would you just stop it!" I finally snapped at him, moving from my back float to treading water.
"Stop what?" He asked in a defensive tone.
"The eye rolling. It is so annoying. "
"How do you- you know what nevermind. Whatever." He spoke back, rolling his eyes at me. I rolled mine right back.
I let put a huff, it was pointless to argue with him. He had such a high opinion of himself, that no one else's mattered.
However he was right. He couldn't just stay in the water all day and despite our constant arguing neither of us wanted to separate.
What was happening to us right now is literal hell, but we have been able to survive this far because we had each other. Without me, Jonah would still be in the white room where this started, and without Jonah I would definitely be dead.
"What kind of contacts do you wear?" Jonah suddenly asked completely changing the topic.
"What?" I don't wear contacts.
"Your eyes keep changing color, its because you wear a special kind of contacts right?"
"Um, no." I replied giving him an odd look, even though I had noticed my eyes changed blue when I froze the water-gel. At the time I thought it was my imagination, but now I wasn't so sure.
"Well when we first met, your eyes were hazel, when you burnt my hand they glowed gold, and now here they are blue."
"Hmmm, they could be linked to my, uh, newfound abilities," I suggested. It made sense. Everytime I caused something... unnatural to occur, they changed color.
"Here we go again," Jonah said sarcastically rolling his eyes.
"You just said that I burnt your hand! And I found that hole in the water! And I can breath under it too! What more proof do the either of us need to realize that we weren't kidnapped for ransom or some other stupid reason?!" I finally snapped at him.
"I think you read too many young adult novels." Jonah glared at me, no doubt pissed that I raised my voice towards his high and mighty ass.
"And I think your a narcissistic bastard." I shot back at him.
"Really, Spara, you really think that? After all the times I saved your dumbass?" His voice was menacing and full of an authoritive power. It made me shrink back a little bit deeper into the water.
"No?" I replied in a quiet, unsure voice. The tone of his voice was terrifying and I really didn't want to speak up, afraid that his voice alone would smush me.
Jonah blinked a couple of times as if realizing how harsh he had sounded.
"Hey, I'm sorry." He apologized. This time his voice was soft and full of remorse.
"Me too." I whispered back, glad that our fight was over.
I hated arguing all the time.
"Lets climb up this cliff." I suggested. It would probably take an hour or so to climb it, but I felt energized ever since I fell into the water.
"You could hardly do the monkey bars. I think this is a bit more complicated." He rolled his eyes again.
I bit back a retort to him. These petty arguments would stretch on forever if one of us wouldn't end it.
And by that I mean me. Jonah's pride is way to high on a pedestal for him to admit defeat.
"Do you have a better solution?"
"No."
"Then there you go."
"Fine, but you need to climb ahead of me incase you fall so I can catch you."
Despite how nice the words were, his tone was matter of fact and annoyed.
"I think not. I'm wearing nothing but this shirt you gave me."
"Whatever." He snapped turning away to start the climb, but I saw that he was blushing.
I let out a silent giggle. He was kinda...cute when he was embarrased.
And then I shook my head. How could I think that arrogorant snob was in any way cute?
I followed Jonah up, pointing out multiple places for him to hold on to along the way. I swear he is blind, they are all so obvious.
"If its so easy, why don't you lead the way? " he finally snapped. I could tell his muscles were exhausted and he was pushing his body to the limit.
I on the other hand felt oddly refreshed. The fresh air filled my lungs with energy and the ocean had soothed my sore and tired body, back to almost normal, and even the rocky cliff offered an easy climb.
"You know why." I responded, biting back a retort. Even though I felt bad that he was physically drained, his tone of voice was seriously so condescending it was annoying.
I heard him mumble something to quiet to hear and I could sense him roll his eyes.
I rolled mine right back. I was glad to see that he still had enough energy to spend on rolling his eyes.
We were nearing the top what felt like two hundred, but probably only three, hours later.
Jonah collapsed, flat on his back as I was pulling myself over the ledge.
Finally!
I stood up straight, my muscles surpisingly hardly sore. I'd climbed up rock walls shorter than this and put up more of a sweat than I am now. In fact I wasn't even sweating. That was weird, considering, the heat, sun, and physical work.
Jonah on the other hand was drenched, and sweat glistened off of his forehead and bare chest.
He was far from bad looking, even after suffering a couple of days in the hellish labyrith we finally got out of.
I had to force my eyes away from his sun-kissed body, so I could get a look at our new surroundings.
Green grass hugged my toes, and there was actual dirt underneath. Large rocks cascaded around the area, making it hard to see what lay infront of us.
Behind me was the wall that separated the body of water we crawled out of from the rest of the ocean.
The sky was clear, only the sun shining down on us, and small white dots that hovered in the sky.
Seagulls cried at each other, tantalizing me by zooming past the wall and looping in the air.
I was envious of the birds. If I could fly, I could leave this insufferable nightmare.
Like the water, the earth below my bare feet hummed at me, informing me of surroundings that would otherwise be unknown to my eyes alone.
A bunch of tiny, light blobs scattered around a bunch of rocks, maybe a mile into the distance. Something quite bigger slithered after them. Its moves were far to precise and coordinated to be a worm, so I safely assumed that it was a snake after a family of mice, or possibly even bunny rabits.
Signs on life moved around above and below ground. The overwhelming of all these differnt creatures movements were making me lightheaded
Unlike in the water, where I could feel vibrations and texture, as if I had glided my hands over them, the earth made me feel like everything was ontop of me in layers and the weight of each thing was distinctive and loud.
Maybe half a mile ahead of me I could detect three more blobs, walking at a decent pace. They were the heaviest living thing I could feel, and the one blob seemed to be the same weight Jonah felt, the other two a little smaller.
They had to be humans! And they seemed to be walking our way.
"Jonah!" I turned to him excitedly. "There are people ahead of us!"
"What?" He asked standing up and looking around. "I don't see them."
"Because they're like half a mile away!"
Jonah scoffed at me.
"I'm sure they are." He rolled his eyes.
"There is! Its kind of like in the water when I could sense my surroundings, but it feels completely different."
"Spara, when we get out I'm going to recommend you to a Loony Bin."
"I'm not crazy! You're the one thats crazy if you don't think anything weird is going on with us."
"Your the one hallucinating magical abilities!"
"Then explain the water!"
We were standing face to face with each other.
I knew my eyes were flashing angrily and Jonahs nostrils were flared ready to yell at me again.
"I don't have the energy to wast on this stupid ass conversation!"
I folded my arms and stomped my right foot on the ground like a pissed off toddler throwing a tempertantrum.
"You are a grade A asshole that thinks he's better than everyone and is so full of himself. And its annoying as hell!"
"And you're an airhead that likes to blabber fairytales to cope with being kidnappped. And that's annoying as hell!"
"You are a jerk!" I retorted.
"Good!"
We were silent for a few more minutes, just glaring at each other. Why did I have to be kidnapped with an arrogant son of a you-know-what?
After a few more moments of staring down eachother, I stomped off, going to head in the direction of the people.
"What are you doing?" He called after me.
"Going to meet those people headed our way." I rolled my eyes at him. It was finally my turn to do that.
"Are you stupid? They could be our kidnappers!"
I ignored him. If it was our captors, maybe I could get some actual answers.
"Spara, get back here before you do something stupid."
I continued to walk away.
"Turn around, now!" He demanded.
I really did mean to walk further, but my legs disobeyed and I turned to face Jonah."
I narrowed my eyes at him. He was made me turn around somehow. I just know it!
It made me even angrier at him.
"Now get over here."
My feet obeyed his command, spoken in a pretty harsh tone.
I didn't speak a single word to him, I was too busy trying to force my muscle to walk the other way.
I failed miserably and ended up back infront of Jonah.
"Now what?" I asked, my voice even.
Jonah looked taken aback, like he expected me to have yelled or apologized.
Well too bad, I thought, he ain't getting the satisfaction of either.
"Let's.... wait for those people." He replied, somewhat sheepish.
I had to raise my eyebrows at that. Jonah and sheepish were two words that did not go with each other.
"Okay." I told him, releasing all the tension and anger.
"We can hide behind these rocks and see who they are before we make any further decisions." Jonah gestured over to a nearby pile of large rocks.
I nodded in agreeance and followed him over there, speechless at his sudden change of perspective.
"I thought you didn't believe me," I stated as we crouched behind the rocks.
"I don't want you to do anything dumb. Thats why we're doing this. Not because I believe your story," Jonah rolled his eyes.
"You will have to believe me when three people show up," I pointed out to him.
"And when three people don't show up, you will have to admit that you are crazy."
"Fine." I smiled, knowing that I would be right.
"Fine." Jonah responded in a pompous tone, but gave my smile a quizzical glance.
A few moments later, I could hear voices.
"Were almost at the edge!" A cheery feminine voice shouted joyfully.
"About time." Another deeper, distinctly female, voice replied.
"Wait is that a wall?" Clearly a guys voice questioned.
All three had very thick accents all seemingly different.
Jonah and I traded curious looks and peered over the edge of the rocks.
It took me a moment to spot them, maybe 12 feet away. Jonah seemed to spot them at the same time and we ducked our heads in unison.
"Did you see what I just saw?" I whispered.
Jonah nodded, speechless.
I was right, there were three people, two girls, and a guy.
The guy was tall and and pretty thin, with dark blonde hair.
The one girl was a short and petite, obviously Asian.
And then came the other girl.
She was a light brown skinned, with dark cinnamon colored hair. But there was something differnt about her. Like way different. Furry, triangular ears stuck out of her head, and a tail came out behind her.
I didn't get a good enough look, but thats pretty sure what I saw.
"What do we do now?" I asked so quiet I could hardly hear myself talk.
"I don't-"
"So, are you guys going to come out, or will I have to drag you out?" A voice interrupted Jonah.
I'm pretty sure it was cat girl.
I shrunk lower, looking at Jonah, willing him to tell me what to do.
He gestured with his hands and shrugged his shoulders, wordlessly telling me he was just as lost.
"Five."
We traded worried glances, unsure of what our move would be.
"Four."
"Three."
"Two."
I gulped nervously. What would happen at one? I reach over and grabbed Jonah's hand, gripping it tight.
Instead of pulling away, what I normally expect him to do, he gripped mine right back.
We were both scared.
"One."
