Chapter 24

The air was getting thinner as we walked blindly through the cave. Dylan was muttering things to himself, letting off his nervous tick. I couldn't see him but, from the amount of pressure he was using to squeeze me hand I could tell he was really scared.

I took a deep breath to calm myself so as not to make matters worse. "Dylan, are you tired? Maybe we should take a rest."

"No..." He shifted closer to me. "I-if we stop I might not b-be able to start again..."

I nodded, more to myself than Dylan, and continued walking. Eventually, I felt Dylan leaning against me, the cave beginning to narrow. This wasn't working, if we kept on like this we'd either end up getting stuck or passing out.

"Dylan, let's take a break." I said, walking back a few paces. He whined nervously but, I made him sit down anyways. "Just close your eyes." I said as I pulled him into my arms.

He hugged me back tightly, his shaky hands fumbling to grab my shirt. He gasped as something ran past our feet, whimpering. "I h-hate the dark..."

"I know." I said, combing his hair. "I know... But, we're gonna get out of here and we're going to go home."

"How do you know...?" He murmured.
"Because we're together. As long as we don't lose each other we'll get there. Then we'll see mom and dad and even Jarvis. As much of a dick he is." I insisted.

He laughed hoarsly. "Yeah..."

I sighed and kissed his cheek gently. He seemed to relax a little and leaned against me. His voice was almost a whisper as he asked, "Jason?"

"Yeah?"

He hesitated. "Are we really going to see mom and dad again...?" He sniffled. "Will we ever go back to school or hang out by the park...?"

"Oh, Dylan..." I wiped away his tears as he broke down into silent sobs. "Of course we will." He didn't seem to hear me so I lifted his face, though I could hardly see it, and stared him right in the eye. "Listen to me. I will get you home and you will never have to come back here again. Okay?"

He put his face in my chest. "Promise...?" He muttered.

"Promise." I said.

There was a comfortable silence before I stood up, helping Dylan to his feet as well. "Come on. Let's get out of here." I said.

I pulled him behind me as we started walking again. The walls closed in as we moved through the cave until suddenly there was a break in the wall about a human wide. I could see a faint light. "Wait here." I whispered.

I slipped through the opening and crept forward, approaching the end of our cave walk. After checking to see if it was safe I turned back. "Dylan." I called. "You can come out now."

He appeared from the darkness and I could finally see his tear-streaked face. His eyes shown when he saw the light and he stumbled forward. I held him to me as we exited the cave and stepped out in the early morning light. We'd been walking all night long.

The trees rustled in the wind and Dylan sighed in content. "Wonder how far we've gone..."

"I don't know but, we're going to keep going until we make it home." I said.

We started out into the trees, watching out for anyone who might be nearby and turn us in. I wondered how far away from civilization we were. If we'd walked all day and night and still hadn't gotten anywhere, what did that mean for us?

Dylan's stomach rumbled and I chuckled as he blushed. "Sorry..."

I rubbed his back. "Maybe we can find something to eat." I said.

We scanned bushes and trees as we walked but, there was nothing that looked even remotely edible. It was all pine and oak. No apple trees or blueberry bushes.

As we stumbled onward I suddenly saw bricks through the trees. I stopped and grabbed Dylan's arm. "Look...!" I said. "It looks like a house! Maybe we finally found somewhere to get help!"

We ran through the trees, racing towards the hope for a savior. However, as we got closer and finally broke through the trees I came to a slow stop. "No..." I said.

I started running and put my hands against the stone wall. It stretched as far as the eye could see in both directions, the stone climbing as high up as half a mile. I hit the wall with my palm. "No... No! No! No!" I shouted, banging my fist on the cement bricks. "Why?!"

Dylan stood behind me with a sad frown, his hands clenched into the edge of his shirt. "Jason-"

I hit the wall several more times as if I thought my fists alone could make it fall over and allow us to pass. Eventually my hands slowed, blood dripping down my wrists, and I dropped to my knees, my head resting against the brick wall. "Why...?"

I felt Dylan's hands on my shoulders and I reached up to put mine over them, my eyes still on the ground. "I... I'm so sorry, Dylan..."

Suddenly there was the sound of snapping and crashing behind us. "We found them!" A voice called.

My eyes widened and I stood up, turning to watch as a group of men surrounded us. We were pinned between the wall and a bunch of deadly-looking guns. I pulled Dylan behind me. "Leave us alone! We just want to go home!" I yelled.

The men spoke into walkie talkies, ignoring my pleas. "We have them by the far wall. Orders?" One asked.

There was static then a voice said, "They've seen to much already. They're more trouble than they're worth. Just get rid of them."

I pulled Dylan closer as the man said the affirmative and the guns began clicking. Dylan's hands shook as he griped my sleeve. "Jason..."

I clenched my teeth. "When I saw go, run as fast as you can..." I murmured.

He frowned. "What-"

"Go!" I shoved Dylan to the right as I made a run for the the other direction, distracting the closest man as I grabbed his gun. There were shouts as I struggled to take the gun away. I gasped as pain shot through my leg. The man had fired the gun and the bullet went straight through my thigh.

I dropped to the ground and the world slowed as muffled shouts sounded and guns went off. I turned towards Dylan and my eyes widened as he fell to the the ground, his skinny arms barely breaking his fall.

I tried to run to him but, my body wouldn't move. I heard my angel screamed as three men stood over him and their guns fired over and over, Dylan's body jerking before growing still.

I shouted in rage and dragged myself across the ground. There were footsteps and I turned back to see a man looking down at me. He raised his gun to my temple and before I could even understand what he was doing he fired and my world went black.
