Prologue

"Subject B-1424, please step forward."

I clenched my fists and did as the man said. I was sick and tired of everybody telling me what to do around here, but there really was no point. I had nowhere to go if I tried to get out.

"Continue with the test," the voice said.

I sighed and looked to where a set of about a dozen armed robots stood. At the voice command, they powered on, and started shooting at me with military guns.

I yawned. They need to get more creative with these tests - it's the least they could do after everything I've done for them.

I darted forward at superhuman speeds and took down the first bot with one swipe of my claws. I felt bullets pelt my back, but they had no effect on me. I reached behind me with my four tentacles and crushed the three robots that shot me. As I did that, I glared at another robot, and it exploded. Probably my favorite enhancement of the ones they gave me - the ability to hack devices with one look.

As for the rest of the robots, well, let's just say I didn't have to do much. Like I always say, the golden coin will decide their fate.

I took my favorite golden-colored coin and tossed it in the air. When it landed, I threw it at the remaining robots. Suddenly, magnetic electricity pulsed from it and forced the robots to combust.

I stood there breathing heavily for a second before I heard the announcement.

"Test complete. Remain where you stand and wait for further instructions."

I waited in the center of the room before three people came in. Two of them were just random armed military soldiers, but the one in the middle I knew very well.

I know him as Eli. He was the guy that says he's my "Master" or whatever, but he takes that title for granted. He hates me, I can tell.

"Well done, B-1424," Eli said, smiling, "The government is pleased with your progress."

I bit my lip to stop myself from making a remark. I learned my first day that it was not a good idea to talk back around here.

"Another thing," Eli continued, "My son here seems interested in what you are achieving."

For the first time, I noticed a kid peeking out from behind Eli. He was about eleven - my age - with darker, sandy-brown hair. His eyes were a dark green, like Eli's. I shivered as I realized how much they resembled each other.

"This is Laff," Eli said, "He's going to take my place when I get promoted - which I know I will. Say hello, Laff."

Laff looked up at me shyly and gave me a small wave. "H-hi."

I smiled. "Hey."

I suddenly felt a sharp pain go up my arm. Eli had his taser. Of course.

"No talking!" Eli snapped.

I clenched my fists. The taser didn't hurt at this point - I had grown a high pain tolerance - but Eli knew I hated it with a red-hot passion. I have PTSD about it at night.

Laff hid behind Eli at his father's harsh tone. Poor kid.

Eli sighed and placed his hand on Laff's head. "You're fine. He just needs to know his place around here."

My place. Hah. If it was up to him, my place would be on the front lines - my least favorite place, but where I was most effective.

"Alright," Eli turned to the two soldiers that were with him, "Escort him back to his room. Make sure he doesn't do any funny business."

As Eli and Laff left the room, the two soldiers jabbed their guns into my back as they led me to my small room.

It's not much of a room. It's more of a jail cell.

Once they locked me in, I sighed. They act like I'm gonna kill them first chance I get.

Thinking about it, I probably would. Nobody treats me right here.

"Hey!"

I turned my head to a small barred window on the left wall. Peeking through it was a girl with rainbow-pastel hair. Her eyes were two different colors - one light sky blue and the other a pastel pink.

"Hey, Ally," I said, smiling, "What's up?"

Ally was another experiment like me - Subject A -117X. We decided that we weren't going to call each other by our subject names, so we made up names. Mine's Blaza.

"I have an idea!" she said, "Come here, I'll tell you!"

I walked across my small cell and stopped in front of the small window where she stood.

"I have an escape plan," Ally whispered in my ear, "We can get out of here tonight!"

"What?!" I exclaimed. I had thought of escaping before, but my plan could have gone wrong in so many ways, I just gave it up.

"Yeah!" Ally said. I saw her reach under her bed next to her and retrieve a piece of paper with some writing on it. Ally handed me the paper.

"I made this plan," she said, "Don't ask how I got the map."

I looked down at the paper she gave me and saw the map she spoke of - a map of the military complex that we were within. There were lots of markings on it - smudgy and sloppy, but legible. We never learned to write, so we kind of taught ourselves. As for reading, well, we were given that ability by the scientists that experimented on us. As for how, I don't know.

"Tonight?" I asked, excited.

"Tonight." Ally replied with the same optimism.

It was time for our escape.

I grabbed the map from under my bed and put them in my pocket. I also grabbed a stone and a piece of metal I chipped off of the window bars - we need it for later.

I heard footsteps echoing in the hallway, and saw Ally peek around the corner - she had just finished her test. She tossed me a soldier outfit and some sunglasses - similar to what she was now wearing.

"Wear this," Ally said. I threw on the outfit over my clothes and put on the sunglasses. As I put them on, my tentacles retracted. Something about my line of sight or whatever - it was five years ago that the scientists gave me my modifications and explained what they did.

Ally looked back to where she came from and then turned back to me. "Coast is clear," she said. I nodded and followed her down the hall.

We came up to the outside of the testing chamber. I noticed someone else in there - it looked like Eli's kid, Laff. Why was he in there?

I shook my head. No time for that now.

About five minutes later, sirens started sounding throughout the complex.

"ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL! SUBJECTS B-1424 AND A-117X HAVE ESCAPED CUSTODY. LOCKDOWN MODE IS ACTIVATED - NO ONE IN OR OUT OF THIS COMPOUND."

"And that's our que to run," I said. Ally nodded and followed me as we sped down the hall.

Soon, soldiers in the halls noticed us and started shooting. Ally pulled out an AK-47 she got from a guard and shot, hitting every target. That was her specialty - ranged attacks, especially guns. She never missed a shot since before she was enhanced.

Once the guards were taken down, Ally and I continued to run down the hall. I could see the exit ahead, walled off by a metal wall. I darted forward and easily lifted the wall, letting Ally through. I pulled the wall back down and ran after her.

That was when we made it outside the building.

The soft blow of the wind surprised me, for it has been years since I'd seen fresh air. The night sky glittered with an endless abyss of stars. When I looked around, I noticed the many shrubs and bushes of the Nevada desert.

"Looks like we're home free," I breathed.

As if on que, however, an energy beam shot out of nowhere and hit Ally from behind. She fell forward and lay there, unmoving.

"Ally!" I exclaimed, but a sinister voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Don't move, or I'll do worse."

I turned and saw Eli standing there, holding something that looked like a gravity gun-type weapon.

"Don't worry about your friend. She's just out cold," Eli said, "You, however, will suffer far worse."

He launched another energy beam from the gun at me, but my tentacles intercepted it, for I had taken my sunglasses off. Eli tried again, but I once again intercepted it.

Then, ever so slowly, he pulled his taser from the latch on his belt. I took a step back as he turned it on.

"I know you hate this," Eli sneered, "Which is why we use it. It's the only way we can get you to do what we want."

I shuddered as I realized he was right.

He took a step forward. I took a fearful step back.

Then, out of nowhere, a flash of rainbow pastel darted in and took the taser from Eli. Ally must have regained consciousness while Eli was threatening me.

Ally turned to me. "Run while you can!"

"No! I won't leave you!" I replied. At that, Ally, shockingly, turned on the taser.

"LEAVE!" She shouted, "Get to safety! I'll escape some other way!"

I backed away quickly and, tears in my eyes, turned and ran full sprint into the night.
