Chapter 35: Waking Up
Izuku POV
"Izuku."
"We made you these cards!"
"It just takes soooome time~"
"You'll never guess what happened today!"
"Midoriya."
"Izu."
"Izuku."
"We miss you."
My friends. I'm hearing my friends. Are they really there? I looked around me, aimlessly walking towards the voices.
"I love you Deku." The voice was so close. I felt my heart skip at the sound of the voice. Kacchan. I started running to the voice, worried about what would happen if I turned around. I didn't want to stay here. I don't want this. I want my friends. My family.
"Problem child, you can do this." Zawa. My heart skipped again.
"Come on little listener." Zashi! I started sprinting to them.
"I-I'm coming!" I shouted into the air. Reaching my hand out for nothing. I tripped and fell to the floor laying there. I stayed there, catching my breath. My chest felt heavy and my head began to hurt. I began to hear a faint beeping, pulling me from the darkness. I felt a soft object in my arms. I felt the warmth of a hand in mine.
A small wave of pain knocked me into reality. I groaned in pain, squeezing the hand and soft object until it passed. "Owwwww." I complained. "That hurrrtt." I slowly opened my eyes, squinting from the light.
"Izuku?" My eyes opened wide.
"Dad?" My voice was scratchy and my throat was hurting. I turned my head to see Dad and Papa. They were both crying. "Woah, don't cry. What's wrong?" They ignored my question and pulled me into a tight hug. I hugged them back, enjoying the moment. I felt a tear escape my eye as we embraced. We let go. Zawa rushed out of the room. Oh. I'm in a hospital? What hap-
"Owwww." I groaned. A stabbing headache hitting me hard. I gripped my head in pain, jumping at the sensation. "What the?" I patted the section of my head that was now shaved. The memory came back to me with force. I slowly lowered my hands.
Zashi picked them up from my lap, holding them tight. "Hey Izuku." My smile returned, now understanding the importance of our intial hug.
I felt my tears build up. "P-papa I thought I was never going to see you again." I dove back into his chest. Letting out my tears. He held me tight, comforting me.
"I'm so happy you're ok Izu. I-i was so worried." He began to cry. We held each other for a few minutes. Dad burst through the door with a person behind him. My breath caught.
"K-kacchan?" I stuttered. He looked at me. His bright eyes shinning in the light. He dropped what he was holding and ran to me, pulling me into a tight hug. He began crying into my shoulder and I into his. I clung to his shirt. "You're real." I chuckled.
"Of course I'm real nerd." He pulled away from the hug. "I'm never going to leave you." He cupped my face with his warm hands, looking into my eyes. His warmth made me realize how cold I was. I felt a chill run down my spine.
I looked around me, just noticing how many things were attached to me. I felt the uncomfortable stream of air being pushed up my nose. I reached to take it out, but was stopped by Kacchan. He gave me a sad look and I felt a pit in my stomach grow.
"Wh-what exactly h-happened to me?" I said slowly. I'm not going to like this answer.
Dad explained what had happened. I explained that the last thing I remembered was Kacchan running up to me while I sat on a bed of flowers. He filled in the rest. My quirks. My health. My friends. The league. Everything. At some point during the explanation, Doctor Kamane came in, helping to explain things and do a check up.
I sat there with my head low. I'm a ticking time bomb. I muttered.
"You're not a time bomb." Zawa rubbed my back, pulling me from my thoughts. I felt my eyes water again. I fiddled with the bracelet on my wrist.
"D-do you think I can still be a hero?" I asked, slightly embarrassed by my question.
"Of course you can Izuku. If you want to be a hero, you can make it happen." I smiled at his enthusiasm, laughing lightly. Mistake. I began to cough. My chest and throat began to burn. I felt my eyes begin to water from the pain.
I started to wheeze, unable to breathe. I struggled for air, gripping my shirt tightly. I saw the people beside me panicking and trying to help. "I- can't b-breathe." I gasped for air.
"Izuku, I need you to take deep breaths." I looked up to see Doctor Kamane infront of me. My vision was blurring. "I know it's hard. You can do this." I did as he said, trying to stop the coughing. After what felt like forever, my coughing was gone and I could breathe again. Well, kind of breathe.
Papa handed me some water. It soothed the burning in my throat. I slowly laid back down, every move I made hurt my chest. I laid back, closing my eyes and trying to breathe. Each breath was hard and shaky. I felt tears roll down the sides of my face. I let out another small cough. The taste of blood filled my mouth. I opened my eyes again.
"Can I rinse my mouth out in the bathroom?" I asked quietly. I got nods from the adults and slowly began to move. I lifted the blankets off my legs and one by one put them over the side of the bed, exposing my thin legs to the cold air. I slowly shifted my weight off the bed, gripping the IV stand for dear life. As I got off the bed, my knees gave out. Kacchan flew forward to catch me as I fell. I felt the air leave my lungs and I gasped. He helped me up and we slowly walked to the bathroom.
He sat me on the ledge of the tub, making sure I was stable. He then turned, filling up a cup of water at the sink and handed it to me. "Here." I took the glass, and swished the water around in my mouth, spitting the now red water back into the cup. I looked at the red water and sighed.
"This kinda sucks." I said, rubbing my eye with the back of my hand. He chuckled and sat down next to me, wrapping me in a side hug.
"It's gunna be ok. I'll be here to help every step of the way." He paused, and spoke through gritted teeth. "Plus, those damn extras are going to be really happy to see you." I laughed. It's nice to see that he hasn't changed too much.
He helped me up and back onto the bed. I sat on the edge, catching my breath again. I look over to the bedside table and take a closer look. I smile realizing that they are all from my classmates. The table top was littered with cards and trinkets.
The rest of the day went by fairly fast. It mostly consisted of tests, check ups and medication. Kamane prescribed me the quirk suppressing medication and one for my lungs. He informed me that I am to take one of each in the morning and night. He also told me about my new set up.
"You'll have to wear the tubes in your nose for awhile. It's going to help you breathe. When you train and shower, you can take it off, but you have to be careful and only do that if you are certain that you can handle it. You'll also have sessions with Recovery girl once a week when you are discharged." He looked at me to make sure I understood and continued. "With the bracelet, things get a bit more tricky. I'd recommend keeping the bracelet on as much as possible. We don't know why yet, but this new quirk has been very unstable, causing you to go into seizures. Your other quirks are exponentially more powerful when the bracelet is removed and it seems that the only quirks completely cut off by the bracelet are blackout and copy. Everything else is just weakened."
He took a deep breath. "I'm telling you this now, but you're probably going to have to stay for another two days." I nodded.
"Wow. That's a lot to take in." I chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. Kamane stood up and ruffled my hair.
"You're a tough kid. You're going to do great things Izuku." I smiled at this. His encouraging words were nice to hear.
Once he left, I began to get tired. I let out a yawn.
"You tired nerd?" I looked at Kacchan with my eyes half closed and nodded softly. I felt a hand on my back and I rolled over to face my parents.
"Hey bud, you get some rest. I'm almost certain your classmates are going to bust down the doors when they get out of class." I chuckled. Dad was probably right. My classmates have always been high in energy. I felt myself drift to sleep. I held the stuffed cat close to me, enjoying it's warmth.
------
They're going to get me.
"Sevveeennnnn"
They'll kill everyone.
"You really messed up this time Number seven."
I can't do this. I need to go. I need to get away.
"You will only cause PAIN."
No! I don't want to hurt them! Stay away!
"Izuku!"
I shot out of bed, and immediately tried to run for the door. I felt cords pull on my skin. I ripped them off me as I stumbled. I was panicking. I need to get out. I fell to the floor with a loud thud. Where am I? People's voices were approaching from behind. No no no. They're coming for me. I spun around, I couldn't see their faces. Tears pricked my eyes as the dark figures swarmed. I'm back there. When did they drug me?!
"S-stay away!" I yelled, throwing my hands out to protect my face. A burst on energy left my body as I yelled, knocking the figures back a few feet. I pushed myself towards the door as the people approached me again. Their muffled voices clashing with the voices in my head. I felt myself getting overwhelmed. The noise began to hurt my head. I clutched the back of my head.
"It's too loud." The voices grew louder. "S-stop. Please stop talking." I tried covering my ears. "Just make them s-stop!" I yelled. I felt a hand on my knee and I lost it. They are going to drag you back to where you belong. I felt my breathing shorten.
I gasped for air, slouching against the door. My vision began to clear, but my head felt light. I coughed slightly, blood dripped from the corner of my mouth. I looked up to see Zawa. He looked so scared. My eyes grew heavy again. I saw him reach out a hand and I violently flinched away from his touch. He paused, then reaching forward again, slowly, to wipe the blood from my face. I let out a scared whimper.
"Izu." His voice cut through all the noise. My mind cleared.
"Dad." I leaned into his arms. As I fell forward, the world went black.

Aizawa POV
I was sitting next to Izuku's be when I was woken up my a fast paced beeping. Izuku's heart monitor was racing, I looked to him and saw him tossing in his sleeping, sweating and muttering. He looked so scared.
"Izuku." He continued to panic, his eyes clenched shut. Bakugo and Hizashi were standing up now too, trying to wake Izuku up.
"Izuku!" His eyes shot open and he started for the door. I don't think he has any idea where he is. We started to follow him and he fell on the floor. He panicked, accidentally activating his quirk and throwing us back, Backugo hit a chair and I smacked into the bed. Hizashi seemed to be able to brace himself. We recovered and slowly approached Izuku again. He was shaking, slouched against the door.
He grabbed his head in pain. "It's too loud." He groaned. The three of us gave a confused look. The room was silent. The only noise coming from the doctors in the hall. "S-stop. Please stop talking. Just make them s-stop!" I reached forward, gently touching his knee. Wrong move. He started having a panic attack. With his lungs the way they are now, this could be dangerous. He started to cough and blood soon followed. Shit.
He flinched as I reached for him, so I moved slower. "Izu." His eyes seemed to focus, bringing him back to reality.
"Dad." He sounded so scared and broken. It hurt to see him like that. His eyes rolled to the back of his head as he went limp, falling to the side. I lurched forward and caught him before his head could hit the floor.
"Hizashi, go get the doctor." He nodded and ran out. I placed Izuku on the bed again.
"What just happened?" Bakugo whispered. I looked at him with saddened eyes.
"I don't really know. It didn't seem like he knew where he was though."
Zashi and a few doctors came in. They spent the afternoon running tests and doing brain scans. I sent Bakugo back to the dorms to tell everyone that the visit might have to be pushed back. After a few hours, Izuku woke up again.
His eyes slowly fluttered open. He sat there silently and turned his head to the window, staring outside. My memories went to the first time he was placed in the hospital and how happy he was to see the sun.
"Hey Izuku." Hizashi said softly. "How are you feeling?" Izuku turned to look at us, but said nothing. He slowly rolled his head back to face the window. Zashi and I shared a worried look. A nurse came in soon after holding some food. Izuku's feeding tube had been removed once he woke up. He started at the food, poking the rice lightly with his chopsticks. He ate a few small bites and moved his attention back to the window.
"Hey Izu." His eyes flickered at the name. "Do you want to go outside to watch the sunset?" His head turned to me. His eyes seemed to shine again. He nodded slightly. I smiled at him. "Ok, I'll go let the doctor know and then we can go.

3rd POV
The family of three got ready to go outside. Izuku put Hizashi's cardigan on over his hospital gown. A nurse came in and moved things around so Izuku could walk the halls with his IV and oxygen.
As he stood up, he clung to the metal rack to stabilize himself. The three made their way down the halls. Izuku's breathing was heavy, as if he was recovering from a run. He stopped at one point to catch his breath.
"I'm ok." He reassured. Soon they were at the doors to a courtyard. Izuku's eyes gleamed as they stepped outside. He took a deep breath in, loving the crisp evening air. He looked around and spotted a bench. "Do you think we could s-sit down?" He said, trying to catch his breath once more.
They sat on the bench chatting about their surroundings. Izuku named off all of the species of trees and flowers that were scattered through the court yard. His parents let him talk to his hearts content. The fresh air seemed to really help Izuku's mental state. The two Pro's told the boy stories while they sat.
Izuku giggled. "Really? Th-that's how you got your hero name?" Aizawa's cheeks dusted pink.
"Yea, well I didn't really care and honestly I didn't think it would stick. But, thanks to this loud mouthed extrovert it did." He shoved his husband lightly. They all chuckled at the memory.
"Izuku!" The small boy jumped at the sudden noise hiding himself behind Aizawa's arm, holding on for dear life. He snapped his head in the direction of the sound, fear swimming in his eyes. He relaxed a bit as he saw his classmates approaching.
Bakugo smacked Kaminari in the back of the head. I'm guessing he is the one that yelled. Thought Izuku. He smiled slightly at his friends. "H-hi guys." He said with a small wave. Everyone gathered around, taking their seats on nearby benches, ledges, and the ground. "W-what are you all doing here?"
"We came to see you!" Said Ururaka in a chipper voice. "We were told you woke up today."
"Bakugo said we weren't supposed to come, so we followed him once he left for here." Kaminari piped in. A big goofy smile stretched across his face.
"You guys suck at following instructions." Aizawa said plainly. Izuku realized he was still clinging to his fathers shirt and slowly let go.
"I told you damn extras not to follow me. You're lucky I don't blast you all to hell." Izuku giggled, happy to see his boyfriend returning to his normal self. The explosive boy blushed slightly.
"Well Izuku, how are you recovering?" Tsu asked, getting straight to the point. Izuku looked to his parents, unsure of how to answer.
"Uhh, well I'm doing ok." He started, tracing the edge of his blackened nails with his fingers. "The doctors said I should be able to get back to the dorms by Friday." He said, smiling slightly.
"Why do you have a quirk cancelling bracelet on? You're not getting arrested are you?!" Mineta exclaimed. Aizawa gave his student a disappointed look.
"Mineta, why would Midoriya be getting arrested?" Iida asked, he also looked done with the tiny grape boy. He shrugged.
"No, I'm not getting arrested." Izuku said, slightly confused by the question. "And the bracelet is because of my new quirk. I can still use most of my quirks though, which is the weird part." He paused, looking at his hands. "It acts as more of a quirk suppressor than canceller." His classmates looked at him in awe.
As they spoke, Hizashi and Aizawa left the class to chat, thinking that it would be good for Izuku to feel some kind of normalcy. The sun began to set, grabbing Izuku's attention. He zoned out, soaking in the sight of the sunset. As the sun went down, he felt the cold night air blow through him. He was still way underweight, so it didn't take much for him to get cold. He shivered slightly from a breeze. He tried to play it off so he could spend more time with his friends. Though, they had noticed him getting cold.
"Hey, why don't we head inside?" Kirishima asked. "It's getting kind of cold, don't ya think?" There were murmurs of agreement. Everyone began to sit up and make their way back inside. Izuku shakily stood, carefully walking himself up to the door where Bakugo stood holding it open.
"Need help?" He asked calmly. Izuku nodded, the short walk across the courtyard already taking it's toll on his lungs. A few people were waiting on the other side of the doors, accompanying them as they walked back.
"H-hey, can we stop really quick?" Izuku said through heavy breathing. He put his hand against the wall to steady himself. He felt himself getting light headed, beginning to sway slightly.
"Izuku, do you need to sit down?" He heard someone say. He was looking at the ground trying to steady his breathing and nodded. He was guided a few steps farther and sat down. Izuku began to feel frustrated with his new limitations, clenching his eyes shut. He felt a had on his shoulder and flinched away from it. "P-please don't t-touch me." He said, his eyes still closed. Tears of frustration built in his eyes as he stood up again.
"You good?" He looked to see Todoroki. He silently nodded. They got back to the room to find most of the class waiting by the door. A nurse approached them.
"I'm sorry, but visiting hours will be over shortly." They nodded and began to say their goodbyes.
"Izuku." Began Ururaka. "Do you mind if some of us come to visit again tomorrow?"
"I'd like that." He said softly with a smile. As they turned away, his smile dropped and he groaned in pain, pushing through into his room.
"Hey little listener, what's wrong?" Izuku walked himself slowly to the bed, out of breath again. He grew more frustrated with himself. His chest heaved as he sat on the edge of the bed.
"FUCK!" He exclaimed. Startling the other three in the room. Aizawa ran up next to him.
"Hey, hey Izuku, what's wrong?" He looked his son in the eyes, kneeling infront of him. The young boy had begun to cry.
"I-I c-can't breathe a-and it's just s-so... so f-frustrating!" He said, gasping between words. He clenched his fists together, digging his nails into his palms. Aizawa reached out and grabbed his hands.
"I know. I know it's hard right now." He tucked a stray lock of silvery white hair behind his ear. "You're strong Izuku. You'll make it through this." His words seemed to comfort the boy. Izuku nodded slightly, letting out a shaky sigh. He laid back into the bed, suddenly being hit with a wave of exhaustion. As his head hit the pillow, his eyes closed, setting him into a dreamless sleep.
