Chapter 22: Move in day
-time skip to morning-
3rd POV
"Ok boys, you are all set. Now young Midoriya, I better not see you here anytime soon!" The doctor teased as the group checked out. They waved goodbye as they walked out the doors. Bakugo had gone home to finish packing last night, leaving the family of three to go finish theirs before move in.
Izuku pulled down a black beanie that he had asked Aizawa to grab him. He was getting more and more nervous about what people would say. He already thought he stuck out enough with his scars and eye, but the hair was just going to bring more attention to him.
-------
After two hours of packing, they were off to UA. They got there a bit late, considering they had done most of their packing that morning. Hizashi and Aizawa helped Izuku bring in the few boxes he had. The white haired boy still didn't have very many possessions. He mostly just had clothes, some books, a coffee maker that Aizawa had bought him, and three different sized mugs. Izuku's favorite of the three was one Aizawa had gotten him that read 'Death before decaf' and was decorated with a skeleton holding a pot of coffee.
They placed the boxes in Izuku's new dorm room. He looked around at the room. There was a balcony with glass doors, a dresser, bed, desk with a chair, and a few wall mounted shelves. The room also had a small bathroom with a toilet and sink. As Izuku looked inside the bathroom, he got a little nervous realizing that the showers were probably communal. He nervously tucked his hands into his sleeves at the though of this inevitable interaction.
"Alright problem child, here is your last box." Aizawa set down a small box onto the desk. There were three other small boxes in the room, along with Izuku's bookbag. Izuku smiled wide and tackled Aizawa and Hizashi into a big hug.
"Thank you guys!" He said loudly.
"For someone who just got out of the hospital you have way too much energy." Hizashi said, laughing slightly and ruffling Izuku's hair.
"We'll let you unpack. We still need to move our things into the teacher dorms. Your classmates should start moving in soon." Aizawa said while checking the time. He tucked his phone away and continued. "If you get overwhelmed at any time or need to step away, just hop on over, ok?" He looked to Izuku, making sure that he understood that he would have a safe space. Izuku's smile waivered a bit, but he nodded.
Hizashi pulled Izuku in for one last tight hug before they parted.
-------
Izuku POV
It didn't take me very long to unpack. I took off my beanie and ran my fingers through my hair, tossing the hat onto the bed. I looked around the room, observing my work as I rolled up my sleeves. My books and journals lined the shelves on the wall. I had placed a lamp on my desk, along with some supplies and school books. Next to my desk, atop my dresser, I had set up my little coffee station, lining up my mugs neatly. I smiled to myself and walked up to the balcony doors.
"I should get some curtains." I mumbled to myself. I stepped outside and continued to admire the view from my second floor balcony, leaning softly against the railing. I felt the cold metal touch my skin and flinched a little at the contact. I adjusted to the cold metal and took in a deep breath, closing my eyes. I left my eyes closed, enjoying the cool breeze flowing through my hair. I lifted my head up, feeling the warmth of the sun hit my cheeks. I smiled to myself. "I never want this taken away again." I said quietly to myself.
There was a sudden knock behind me and I yelped, quickly spinning around.
"Woah, hey bro it's just me." Kirishima stood behind me smiling. I let out a sign of relief and gave him a smile back.
"Hey Kirishima." I said, letting out a small laugh. "What's up? Are you all moved in?"
"Nah, I just got here a little while ago. I just wanted to come say hi." He gave my a toothy grin. "Also, Ashido was talking about having a little game night in the common room tonight, you in?"
I pondered the question. What even is a game night? It sounds like it could be fun. "Um, sure. That sounds fun!"
"Cool, man! Well I'm going to go finish up in my room. I'll see you later!" He jogged out of my room waving as he left. As the door closed behind him, it hit me that my sleeves were up. Oh crap! He totally saw! He saw all the injection scars and everything!
I frantically started rolling down my sleeves as there was another knock on the door. I finished pulling down my sleeves and quickly snatched up my beanie, trying to hide my hair. I cracked open the door.
It was Zawa. I gave him a confused look as I opened the door the rest of the way. "I thought you were unpacking?" He smiled at me and handed my a bag. I looked at it, obviously confused. "What is this?" I asked, pointing to the bag in his hands.
"Just take it problem child." I sighed and accepted the bag. I placed it on my bed and pulled out the contents. It was two pieces of large dark blue cloth with small silver stars sprinkled across it. I held one of the pieces in front of me, trying to understand what it was. "They are curtains, genius."
"Oooohhhhhhhh." A look of realization spread across my face making Zawa smile.
"I noticed the glass windows, and knowing you and your already terrible sleep schedule, I wasn't going to let anything make it worse." He playfully nudge my shoulder as I laughed.
"Thank you dad. I was actually just thinking about getting some curtains."
"Perfect timing then." He gestured towards the doors. "Here, I'll help you put them up." I nodded happily. After those were up, I was officially moved in. I flopped onto the bed. I didn't have to move in a ton, but I had just gotten out of the hospital so it's only natural that I'm a bit tired. I sighed, thinking back on the events of the past few days.
"So I have another quirk, huh?" I reached into my pocket and pulled out a thin red phone. Zawa had gotten me one since we were going to be apart more often. I looked through the contacts and selected his name.
Problem Child: "Hey dad, am I ok to sit in the courtyard and practice my new quirk?"
He started typing a response right away.
Crazy Cat Lady: "Are you sure you can handle that?"
Problem Child: "I think so. I'm not going to try anything major, just mess with a little rock or something. I'm just wanting to get a grasp on how it works."
There was a small pause before he started typing again.
Crazy Cat Lady: "Ok Izu. Nothing big. Make sure to pace yourself, and if you break anything you will run so many laps tomorrow."
I chuckled softly.
Problem Child: "I'll be careful. Thank you!"
With that, I shoved my phone in my pocket. I grabbed a black oversized hoodie and pulled the hood over my head.
As I walked down the halls, I saw multiple rooms with the doors propped open with boxes. My classmates inside happily chatting with their families as they helped their children move in. I felt a pang of sadness remembering my mom. I slipped out into the small yard that was just beside the common room. I walked around for a bit until I found a rock I thought to be suitable. I walked back to towards where I had come from, softly tossing the rock up into the air. I plopped down onto the grass and began practicing.
I placed the rock on the ground in front of me, crossing my legs as I sat down. I began to think out loud. "So is this like, a touch based quirk? The doctor told me that I could affect large areas so I don't think that's how it works." I paused, activating my analysis quirk and started to understand. "Ah, ok."
I placed my open palm above the rock, my knuckles towards the sky. I concentrated, taking a deep breath in and flipped my palm over. The rock dug into the ground. "Huh." I let out, a little surprised I got results on my first try. I moved my hand away and went to pick up the rock. It didn't budge from it's little crater in the ground. I used a bit more force and was able to barely move it from the spot. I felt a bead of sweat drop from the effort. "Damn, I guess this quirk is pretty strong." I repositioned myself again. "Let's try less gravity now."
I outstretched my arm again, my knuckles facing the earth. I took another breath, and flipped my had again. I saw the rock lift slightly off the ground. I leaned in close and saw that it was now lightly balancing on the tips of the grass. "Wow." I whispered to myself. The breath from my words moved the rock. I sat up, bringing the rock with me. I held it out and let go. It sat there levitating in the air. I chuckled again, slightly amused with how easy this quirk seemed to be. I picked up a few other small rocks, adding the same effects to each. There was now a line of rocks slowly lowering to the ground as if they were balloons. I laughed to myself, gently tapping them back up so they wouldn't hit the ground.
"Hey nerd." I flinched at the noise letting out a small noise. The shock broke my hold on the rocks and they came falling down, knocking into each other as they landed. One knocked me in the head.
I hissed in pain, grabbing my head with both hands. "Owww. Kacchan you can't scare me like that!" I whined. I didn't actually turn to check it was him, but with my Senses quirk it was easy to tell. Plus, he called me nerd.
"Not my fault you weren't paying attention." I removed my hands from my head and turned to look at him. He walked over, sitting on the grass next to me. He kicked his legs out and leaned back. "What are you doing out here anyway?"
I grabbed one of the rocks from the ground. "I was practicing my new quirk." I said plainly. This had become a regular occurrence for me so there was no emotion in my voice.
Kacchan watched me. He didn't seem to know what to say to that. I smiled at him, trying to ease whatever worry he might have.
"I'm ok. I've done this so many times it's a piece of cake." That answer didn't seem to help. He looked at me with sad eyes.
"Hey... Izuku?" His eyes flickered. I tilted my head slightly, waiting for him to finish. "Is it always that painful when you get a new quirk?" I was a little shocked by the question. I felt my fists tighten in response. I paused, thinking back to the USJ.
"Honestly," I paused again to think. "This quirk was probably the least painful. I mean, it hurt, but I've had worse. There have also been a few that didn't take, but Crusty said they might just take awhile to manifest. My healing quirk basically made my body break and heal itself for hours and when they gave me my elemental control quirk, the pain lasted for a few days. It came in waves and I kept blacking out." I tossed the rock in my hands as if we were having a casual conversation. "That one almost killed me." I caught the rock in my hand and looked back to Kacchan.
He looked down to the ground again. "Oh." I felt bad revealing this to him.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you sad." He scoffed at my words.
"You nerd, don't apologize." He softly smiled at me. "Besides, I asked." He paused again. I could tell he had another question.
"What's your question?" I reached my hand out, holding the rock. He looked at it, gently grabbing it. He looked down at it, gently tossing it side to side.
"Well.... I just.... I was wondering." I placed my hand on his shoulder. He let out a breath. "H-how many times... have you had to go through that?" I moved my hand back and laid back onto the grass, gazing at the blue sky.
"Well, now I have seven." I let out a defeated laugh. "That's me..... Seven." I whispered. I felt a tear fall from the corner of my eye. I quickly wiped it away and sat up. I didn't want today to be sad. I gave Kacchan a big smile. "Hey. Enough sad talk." A smirk grew across my face. "You wanna spar?"
He tossed the rock to the side and gave me an evil smile. "Oh you're on, nerd."
He pulled off his hoodie and I pulled off mine, leaving my beanie on my head. We walked farther into the grass and began our little match.
-------
We hit the ground with a thud. I was on the ground with my arms pinned above my head, Kacchan on top of me trying to catch his breath. He had a dumb smirk on his face. I growled in frustration.
"You only got that win cause of my blind spot." I squirmed under his hold letting out another frustrated grunt. "Ugh! You pig! Let me up!" He laughed at my frustration.
"You're just upset I finally won." He released my arms and threw himself onto the grass.
"Tch! You just got lucky." I laid down next to him. The sky was starting to change into a vibrant blood orange sunset. I smiled at the sky. "I am never going to get over how amazing the sky is."
------
Kacchan POV
"I am never going to get over how amazing the sky is."
I looked to my side to see Izuku watching the sky with such joy. It made me smile. I like seeing him so happy. After all the shit he's been through, he deserves something good.
"Yea. It's pretty amazing." He shifted his eyes to me. Our noses almost touching now. I felt my checks go red. "Y-you're pretty amazing too." I stutter out. He lets out a small giggle and nudges me with his elbow.
Our eyes lock again and the world seemed to fade away. I began to lean in close. Our eyes began to close and-
"HEY YOU GUYS!" I let out an angry growl. Izuku giggled again. Damn that's cute.
I sat up and saw Pikachu and Tape arms. Pikachu was jumping up and down trying to get our attention.
"Aizawa wants everyone to meet in the common room so he can go over rules!" Izuku stood up, dusting himself off.
"Coming!" He yelled back. Pikachu and Tape arms went back inside. Izuku turned around, extending a hand to me. I grinned, grabbing his forearm as he helped pull me up. We grabbed our hoodies and went inside. Before we entered, Deku put his back on. He must be dying of heat. Why would he put that back on? Then I saw as he pulled the hood over his head and readjusted his hat. Oh. I frowned a little bit at this. It sucks to see him like this.
Soon all the extras were in the common room and we were able to start.
"Everyone sit." Eye bags pinched his nose as the chatter died down. I sat at the dinner table next to Deku in the back.
Eye bags went on about curfew, chores, general rules, and gave an extra warning to the Grape head that he better not try anything pervy or he would be expelled.
"Ok. You guys are free to do whatever the rest of the night, just remember there are classes tomorrow and if you are late because of staying up, I will put in place a curfew." He glared at Pikachu and the Alien. They looked in opposite directions, whistling as if they didn't hear him. He groaned. "Alright. Don't do anything stupid." He waved as he walked out of the dorms.
Just as the door shut, the Alien jumped up. "Now it's time to party!" She squealed.
"Oh lord help me." I grumbled.
