Chapter 16: Training
Aizawa POV
I'm waiting in the gym for the rest of the students to arrive. Todoroki just showed up, along with Yaoyorozu and Jiro. Soon after Izuku shows up. I catch his eyes and try to give him a reassuring smile. He looks upset.
I notice he has his sleeves pulled down over his hands too. I watch him as he tucks one arm to his chest and lifts the hem of his turtleneck to his lips. Realization hits me. "I'm a fucking idiot." I whisper to myself.
Soon after the rest of the class trickles in. I notice the boys keep glancing at Izuku, who is now staring at the floor.
"You all took way too long to get out here." I glare at the class. "Because of that, you will all run 3 laps around the gym. Go now." They groan and begrudgingly start their run.
Iida, Bakugo, and Todoroki are the first to arrive. Izuku arrives close behind. The last one back... Mineta. I sigh.
"Ok, pair up. We are going to spar for the first 20 minutes." Everyone breaks off into their groups. Izuku lingers behind, not approaching anyone. As I'm about to walk up to him, Todoroki walks up to him.
"Midoriya. I would like to spar with you." Izuku gives him a small nod and they walk off.
I haven't actually seen this kid in action before, so let's see how he holds up against the top student. The two boys walk to an open mat, both taking a fighting stance.
The tension between them seems thick, I wonder if something happened in the locker room.
Suddenly Todoroki lunges at Izuku, he quickly ducks under Todoroki's punch, swiftly grabbing his wrist and flipping the two toned boy onto his back. I let out an audible laugh. Izuku looks to me and smiles. What a dork. I chuckle to myself.
-------
Izuku POV
With each match Todoroki seems to get more and more frustrated, he hasn't won yet. I decide to use this to my advantage. Emotional state is important in combat. We stand at opposite sides of the mat, preparing for the new match.
"You having fun?" I ask mockingly.
"Tch. Don't get cocky." I stare at him focused on what his next move will be. Suddenly he gives me a weird look. Knocking me back to reality.
"What?" I ask. He just points next to me. I turn my head to see someone standing beside me. I flinch. They were standing in my blind spot. I didn't even notice. "Jesus! Don't sneak up on someone like that!" The brown haired girl looks at me confused.
"Haha I didn't mean to scare you. But it's not like I meant to, I mean, you could see me walking up to you couldn't you?" I look down to the floor.
"No," I say softly "I couldn't see you." She looks at me confused and before she could ask anything else, Aizawa's voice echoed through the gym.
"EVERYONE START YOUR LAST ROUNDS." The girl hands me a water bottle and smiles to me as she jogs away. I guess this is why she came over in the first place. I shift my attention back to my opponent. He is smirking at me. It sent shivers down my spine.
"Well, now I know your weakness. You're blind in your right eye, aren't you?" I froze at his question. I could see a few of the other students gathering around. They must have heard him. I try to shake it off.
Without responding, we start again.
He flies at me, now keeping to my right side. This forces me to constantly be shifting in order to keep him in my line of sight. I chuckled to myself. Like Shigiraki would let his weapon have such an obvious weakness. I stop trying to keep him in my sight, and close my eyes completely.
-------
Todoroki POV
Did he just close his eyes? I take my chance and lunge at him, trying to swipe his legs out from under him. I've got him. Just as my legs were about to make contact, he jumps up, one hand outstretched as he grabs my shoulder, pulling me down. I hit the floor and roll up, back on my feet. He stands in front of me again. His eyes still closed.
"Are you mocking me or something?!" I yell. I'm getting frustrated. My yell seems to have attracted some unwanted attention and I realize that we are the last match going.
He says nothing and takes a step forward, instantly rushing me. I dodge the attack and throw a side hook. He ducks down, sliding towards me on one knee, punching me in the gut. I gasp at the sudden loss of air. He uses my pain to his advantage. Still crouched down, he swings out his leg and kicks my feet out from under me. I fall hard onto my shoulder, smacking the mat with a loud thud.
There are a few gasps from the class. I open my eyes to see Midoriya opening his. He walks up to me with an outstretched hand. "Those were good matches. I haven't had an opponent as observant as you in awhile." He smiles at me.
"Yea. Ok." I say. Grabbing his hand, he helps pull me up. His sleeve lifts slightly with the motion, revealing more scars trailing up his arms. He notices me looking and quickly pulls his sleeves back over his hands.
"Ok. Five minute break and then it's quirk training."
Midoriya walks off to the edge of the gym and slides to the floor, pulling his head to his knees. I grab two waters and approach the boy.
He must hear me coming, because he lifts his head to look at me. He looks so tired. The bags under his eyes show that he doesn't get much sleep.
I extend the water towards him. He looks at the bottle, contemplating whether or not to grab it. Slowly, he reaches out and takes it. I sit down next to him, our backs against the wall.
"Hey Midoriya." He tilts his head at me, waiting for me to continue. "How did you get that scar across your eye?" He stares at me, emotionless. This is a completely different person than the one I just fought.
"You first." He says calmly. I was a little taken aback by this, but I guess since I'm prying, it only makes sense that he would want information in return.
"My mother threw boiling water on my face when I was young." He stares at me, almost unfazed. He simply nods, facing forward again, he says.
"That must have sucked." I chuckle at his remark.
He looks at me with his brows furrowed. "You know, you're the first person that hasn't pitied me after they hear what happened. Thank you." I give him a small, awkward smile. He returns the look, but it quickly fades.
"I had a heating rod held to my face until I went blind in my eye." He states simply. Again, the boy surprises me.
"Who did that to you?"
He shakes his head. It's obviously still a sore subject. I nod, understanding his silence. We sit there the rest of the 5 minutes chatting about UA and the class. He reveals to me that he is a bit anxious around this many people.
"I haven't actually been to school since I was seven."
"Why is that?"
He pauses again. "You c-could say I was home schooled."
--------
Izuku POV
"Problem children. Breaks over. Pair up again with someone different." Aizawa said firmly. "Izuku, come here for a sec." I jog over to him. "Where did you learn to fight like that? You beat the best student like it was nothing. I'm impressed." He smiled at me and ruffled my hair. I let out a small laugh and felt my face go a little red.
"W-well, when I was, um with the L-league. Th-they forced m-me to train. Said th-they couldn't have their w-weapon be w-weak." I hung my head low, feeling ashamed of my past. I felt Aizawa pull me into a hug, I flinched a little at the sudden contact.
"You aren't a weapon. You're my son. You're a person." He broke the hug and looked at my scared eyes. "Now go get in there and train. We can train your new quirk later when there aren't as many people." I smiled at him again and ran off.
I paired up with that brown haired girl from earlier. She said her name was Ururaka. I like her. She is super nice and kind. We spared and talked the rest of class. I think she will be a good friend.
After training, Aizawa said I could take the rest of the day to study in the library since I already knew the material we were going over.
I changed and walked to the library, pulling my sleeves down as I walked down the halls. I got a few looks from other students. Probably cause I'm not in a uniform. I walked a little faster and found the library.
I let out a sigh of relief when I got to the library. The room was mostly empty which made me happier. I started to walk around, collecting a stack of books. They ranged from lock picking, computer hacking, metals, electrical currents, and even a book on quirks that relate to technology. I found a quiet corner by the window and settled in. I dove into the information, writing down notes and ideas as I learned.
So if the metal is made of this and the electrical properties prevent normal lock picking, logically it would have to be hacked. Maybe there is a panel on the collar that I can pop open, but if I do that, does the collar have it's own protection system? Will it go off? I lifted my arm to scratch my neck. This collar has never been comfortable. I groan slightly and flop my head onto the table. Logically I should be able to deactivate most of the collars functions if I can get to the wiring. I'd be safe from the effects, but it would still be on. At least with that I coul-
"Problem child, you're muttering." I lift my head from the desk to find Zawa and Nezu smiling at me. They sat down across from me, moving the high stacks of books as they sat down.
"Any progress?" Nezu asked, he took my notes and started to read over them.
"Not really. I've found a way to disable the functions of the collar if I can open a panel on it, but I still can't find a way to get it off." I looked at Zawa. "Wait, shouldn't you be teaching?" I asked a little loudly.
"Calm down kid." He chuckled. "School has been out for an hour."
"Wow. I didn't even realize." Looking out the window, I see the low sun, confirming his words.
"Well, how about we go to the support course workshop tomorrow morning and deactivate it. At least that way, we know you'll be safe." Aizawa says.
"I will come and supervise." Nezu says. I nod, getting a little excited about the idea.
Tomorrow.
