Is That A Baby!
"Is that a baby!" Dylan cried out as he looked up and saw Caitlin holding a screaming newborn while Ava looked completely out of it and a complete mess.
"Yes it's a baby! Dylan just get a medic!" Caitlin called out as she tried her best to remain calm but she was freaking out.
"On it!" Dylan quickly told Caitlin as he quickly got up and ran to the campus infirmary to ask for help. "This isn't real! This isn't real! This isn't real!" Ava kept telling herself in her head as she tried to process everything that was happening.
It all felt like some horrible nightmare and there was just no way this was actually happening right now. It couldn't be. Any minute now she would be waking up and everything would be normal again it just had to be.
"Ava are you okay? Dylan is getting you help but you have to stay up," Caitlin told Ava as she could see that her friend looked completely out of it. She didn't blame her. She would be a complete mess as well if this had happened to her but Ava's zoning out was starting to scare her.
Ava just quickly snapped out of her shock as she looked over at Caitlin who was still holding the tiny newborn. "Is this real?" Ava asked Caitlin who just slowly nodded as she looked at the traumatized girl.
"Yeah um Ava it's real. Do you um do you want to hold her?" Caitlin nervously asked Ava as she motioned to the baby.
"That's mine?" Ava asked as she was still trying to process what just happened. "Yeah Ava she's yours. Do you want to hold her?" Caitlin told the disoriented girl who just looked at her.
"It's a girl?" Ava asked again, making Caitlin smile a little as she could tell that while Ava was still completely out of it she was starting to become a little more lucid.
"Yeah Ava you have a baby girl. Do you want to hold her," Caitlin told Ava who just smiled a little as she still couldn't believe this was happening but she had always wanted a daughter.
Ava just slowly nodded as Caitlin just carefully handed her the tiny newborn. "Okay be careful and support her head," Caitlin told Ava who just rolled her eyes as she just did what Caitlin said.
"She's so tiny, is this normal?" Ava asked Caitlin as she had no clue what was considered normal and what was considered a sign of concern. The fact that Ava didn't even know she had been pregnant and was just drinking definitely had her worried about her baby though.
Caitlin just sighed as she honestly didn't know how to respond to Ava's question.Caitlin was smart that was for sure but she barely knew anything when it came to babies.
Before Caitlin had time to really respond Dylan came back in with a medic who immediately went to Ava's side and began to examine her and the tiny baby girl.
"I'm fine," Ava told the medic as she didn't want all these people surrounding her right now. She was still very vulnerable and grieving and didn't like how there were too many people near her.
Ava just wanted to be alone again where she could just sit in her room and try to process everything that just happened in the last few days up until now but that was definitely not happening right now.
"Ava I know this is all confusing and hard to process but you have to let the medics do their job. They just want to help you and your baby," Caitlin told Ava who just rolled her eyes as she barely even knew Caitlin and didn't like how Caitlin was trying to act all friendly with her now when she had never bothered to before.
"We're fine," Ava told Caitlin as she just held her new baby close to her. "Well everything seems to be good so far but I think you should still go to the hospital just to be sure," the medic told Ava who was going to protest but decided it was best to just get it over with.
"Alright fine but this is ridiculous," Ava told the medics as she let them take her and her new baby to the hospital leaving the other two still standing in the dorm in shock as they couldn't believe that had just happened.
"Can I go now? I feel fine and when are you bringing my baby back? It's been hours," Ava told the doctor once she had been taken to the hospital and examined along with her baby. They still hadn't brought the baby back yet though and it was starting to really worry Ava.
"You're just recovering we had to give you a few stitches because you tore a little bit but you should be fine and as for your baby we're just making sure she has all her necessary vaccines and that her weight and breathing are fine," the doctor told Ava who just slowly nodded as she understood all that but she still wanted to know that her baby was okay and they seemed to be trying to distract her.
"Okay but can you just tell me if that stuff is fine or not I feel like you're not telling me anything and I have a right to know she's my baby," Ava told the doctor as she tried to ignore how weird that felt to say.
Ava was a mom now. She was about to be responsible for another human being and that was a terrifying thought but at the same time as soon as she had held her baby in her arms for the first time back in that dorm she knew that she couldn't just abandon her.
"I understand your concern but I assure you that we are doing everything we can to make sure that your baby is safe and healthy," the doctor told Ava who just sighed as she wanted to argue more but she knew that she had technically already messed up with not knowing she was pregnant in the first place and drinking and she didn't want to bring too much attention to herself.
"Okay thank you I'm just worried this is my first baby and I didn't really know I was pregnant in the first place and I just feel so guilty please just tell me that my baby is okay at least," Ava rambled out to the doctor as she tried to hold back but couldn't help herself as it all just came pouring out.
The doctor just gave her a small smile as she nodded. "It's okay you would honestly be shocked at the amount of times this has happened actually it's more common than you would think. I assure you that your baby is going to be fine if you want. I could go check on her for you," the doctor told Ava who nodded her head.
"Yes please my name is Ava Jalali so she should be under Jalali um but I still don't exactly have a name yet for her I hope that's okay," Ava told the doctor who smiled again and nodded.
"Yeah of course a lot of parents go through the same thing, especially new time parents just take your time," the doctor told Ava as she got up and went to check on the baby leaving Ava alone in the room to think.
Ava still couldn't believe that this was all real. Her boyfriend and the father of this baby was gone and now she is being handed this new life that she is now just responsible for taking care of keeping alive. It still felt like some messed up dream and any minute now she would wake up.
Ava's thoughts were interrupted though when the door opened and the nurse came in holding her baby, just another confirmation to Ava that this was really happening.
"Okay here you are Miss Jalali, it seems your little girl is all good. She is a bit small and her breathing is a little off but it's nothing too concerning," the nurse told Ava as she carefully handed the newborn back to Ava making Ava smile again as she just held her baby close to her.
"Hi sweetie it's okay I'm your mommy and I'm gonna take care of you don't worry Mal," Ava told the newborn. She was terrified but she knew that this baby needed her right now and she was determined to be there for Mal no matter what now.
"Okay and everything seems to be good I would say you're all clear for discharge," the doctor told Ava a few days later after she finished doing her last minute checks and making sure that Ava was recovering well and that Mal was healthy.
Ava just slowly nodded as she thanked the doctor and signed the papers. She was so ready to go home and just be in her dorm but at the same time she didn't know how ready she actually was for this.
Ava knew that Mal needed her and she wanted to be there for her as much as she could but at the same time she was about to be sent home with a newborn that she wasn't prepared at all for and she was going to be doing this all alone.
Once Ava had left the hospital she just quickly buckled Mal into the car seat that she managed to buy at the last minute and just looked back one more time.
"Okay Ava you can do this," Ava told herself as she just closed the car door and got into the driver's seat then headed back for BHU where she just knew things were about to get more complicated for her.
