PROLOGUE
"MAX, JEAN! YOU TWO NEED TO evacuate the building! Make sure that everyone is outside!" Dr. Anderson urgently told two of my fellow interns, before turning to me, another intern, and her assistant scientist.
"The four of us need to shut down the Celestial Core and the Daybreak Generator!" The redheaded scientist told us as she set off the evacuation alarms. "Clarisse, I need you to shut off everything on the main console!"
"Everything?" The tall Filipino girl asked with wide eyes. "Even the cooling mechanism and emergency override?"
"Everything." Our superior told her with a confirming nod, before turning to me. "Elena, you shut down the Core, while Lucas and I take out the Daybreak Generator."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Elena, you don't understand." She told me with a shake of her head. "You have to shut it down from inside the chamber! I'd do it myself, but I have to put the emergency containment codes into the Generator and the Core's mainframe to contain any negative after effects."
"You have three minutes to get out of there, after shutting down the Core. Otherwise the Automatic Quarantine will lock the chamber with you inside!" She told me and realization hit me like a bus.
There was a very high likelihood that I wouldn't make it out of the chamber alive.
I pursed my lips and gave my boss a nod, thinking to myself for a split second. 'Why the fuck isn't she doing this? I'm just an intern.'
"You are the smartest and fastest person in this lab, Elena. If anyone can do this, it's you." Anderson told me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I didn't have time to roll my eyes or call her out on her 'you're the only one who can do this' bullshit. So, I simply nodded and withheld my sarcastic comments.
"See you soon, boss."
"See you soon, kiddo. Good luck!" The ginger replied, before quickly leaving for the console room.
I quickly unlocked the chamber with my key card and threw open the door. The malfunctioning Celestial Core had caused a strong wind to rage around the room. The force of the wind carried bits of glass and debris in a tornado like motion.
My brown hair flew around wildly, as I made my way towards the Core. I flinched as boys of glass continuously dragged against my face, leaving cuts of various sizes on my cheeks and forehead.
Typing in the emergency shut down codes, I saw something weird out of the corner of my eye. The tips of my brunette hair was slowly turning blonde.
I didn't waste much time being too shocked by my new hairstyle. Rushing towards the levers to finish shutting off the Core, I continued to do my job. After shutting off the first two levers quickly, the third one didn't budge so easily. I used both hands and all my weight on the jammed lever, making it slowly come down.
However, the levers apparently didn't work, because the Core was still going out of control. Bright blue and yellow electricity shot out of the Core, as I did my best to dodge them. Unfortunately, I was caught off guard and one of the bolts hit me in the chest.
I let out a cry of pain, as the Core's energy flowed through my body and caused me to crumple to the floor.
My vision became blurry and I tried to crawl to the chamber door, despite the pain. I pulled on the handle, only to be brought a further shock.
It was locked.
'That's impossible!' I thought frantically and fearfully, continuing to pull on the door. 'I have two more minutes!'
Looking up from the door handle and through the glass door, I saw Dr. Anderson standing there stoically. An emotionless look on her face as she quickly grabbed her things. Then it hit me.
"You locked the door! You knew this was going to happen!" I yelled angrily over the roaring wind.
"Of course I knew, Elena. You really don't think a perfectly functioning Core would just start to lethally malfunction on its own?" The redheaded bitch told me with a smirk and a tilt of her head. "The Core wasn't the experiment, Dear....."
"You were." She finished, before beginning to walk out of the lab.
"Why? Why are you doing this?!" I shouted, tears of fear, anger, and pain flooding down my cut up cheeks.
Dr. Anderson didn't answer, she just walked right out of my sight. Suddenly, another bolt of electricity struck me and everything went dark.
The next day, I woke up in my room in the home of my foster moms. They told me that I walked home after getting checked out by EMT's.
I walked six fucking blocks to the apartment, and I don't remember any of it.
