When Elizabeth reappeared a little later on, the last thing she was expecting was to pause and look to where the other two travellers were. Alma was back asleep, it seemed. Her head rested comfily on a pillow, the pillow in question seemed to be positioned in David's lap. His long legs were stretched out, his feet crossed at the ankles. She had been gone a fair few hours, if presuming he had been like that for a while, it was a miracle he didn't suffer from circulation problems; because a person by now would surely have dead legs and be dying to fidget about.
But not David, he seemed to be distracting himself with his own little task, the fact that his lap was being used as an extension of a bed didn't seem to bother him in the slightest. There was an odd sense of causality between the action which caused Elizabeth to pause awkwardly before moving more into the room. It was as if this had happened before. Little did she know that it had happened before, numerous times. David had long since discovered that Alma slept best when around him, even more so if she had contact with him. All he wanted was for her to get a full good couple of hours of rest and then some.
"Any luck, Elizabeth?" David's voice asked casually, he hadn't looked up from his little task. Elizabeth wasn't too certain where he had got the little booklet in his hands from, but it wasn't until she slowly sat down with one of the curled maps that she realised he had made it himself. A very quick, roughly made thing. Paper had been torn and folded to make a little booklet that he could hold in his hands. Elizabeth couldn't help but frown from curiosity, was he writing? Or drawing? Honestly, she had never heard of a service synthetic having a creative streak. That was unknown to her, yet what did she know? It wasn't like she had come across many in her life.
"It isn't good news," in relation to travel and time. This got David's attention, blue eyes flicked over the top of the booklet. They just looked at her curiously, slightly shining in this low light. It was rather eerie, to a point, the fact that he was staring unblinkingly at her in silence, waiting patiently for her to continue. He didn't need to say anything to know she'd come out with more information. "It took us two years to get to where we wanted to. This...their home world is more like double that, and add another year, give or take." Elizabeth explained while quietly removing the things from the table. She placed the map on it and managed to weigh it down with odd little knick-knacks. "We're here, or rather this seems to be the system we've now appeared in." The map in the control room was extremely helpful and expansive. They were in a part of space that as yet, no human had been. "Our coordinates and destination is...here," she trailed a finger across the paper until tapping her finger slowly on a sphere shape, yet again, the map in the room was helpful with exact locations. The system in which the Engineers called home seemed smaller than the one Earth was inhabiting. A main star, and a few planets, that was it. Somewhere on one of those planets, the Engineers were living and doing who knew what, and they were going to be there...in a fair few years time.
Her explanation seemed to intrigue David as he lowered his little booklet. He managed to place it to one side, he was going to put it in his lap but remembered he was being used as a pillow. He looked at the sleeping human almost fondly, Elizabeth thought before he awkwardly managed to shift and lean in closer to the table. He didn't want to wake her, least of all to see if Elizabeth's explanation was founded. "And?" After eyeing the stars up, his eyes darted back up to hers.
Elizabeth sighed, "You knew." With the almost bored tone and the slight turn of his lips, either he was humouring her, or he knew. "You lied to us, David."
He tilted his head and retreated back to lean against the wall. His booklet was once again picked up and he twirled the pen in his hand before the sounds of scratching appeared in the room. The pen travelling across the paper was the only sounds which could be heard. "I merely avoided the topic, and the blatant obviousness. You are both under no illusion that it will take a while to get to the Engineers. It would lower morale if I simply stated that to you, when you had asked, that it would take approximately four or five years to get to them." David for one thought morale was low enough as it was. It was a bit dismal onboard. "I presumed you would both much rather avoid the mention of death. The conversation of death seems to make humans uncomfortable, and I believe you've both seen enough death already, don't you think? And if not death, then hypersleep. Five years of sleep, even to me that sounds dreadful, and I don't know what it is like to sleep." David paused and looked downwards when there was movement. He thought the talking had woken Alma up, but she in fact just turned onto her back, her sleeping face looked up at him. David sighed, she looked so peaceful. Her dark eyelashes skimmed her cheeks as her eyes moved under closed lids, even a small smile was on her face. David smiled in return and continued drawing, she was totally dreaming.
"You're close," David's eyes looked away from his booklet again and looked to Elizabeth. She leaned her chin against her hand, David frowned lightly, she had just been watching them.
"We have been through a lot together, her and I." David stated, which was true. She had been there since the beginning of his life, she had helped him through life; helped him to learn, to always expand what he knew, to the wonder of popcorn and movies; even slightly darker times when he had visited her in the hospital and put 6 out of his misery, to the Prometheus and the shock and awe of seeing her again after a split; the sleep conversations, the near death, the moments of intimacy, yes, they had well and truly been through a lot, and now they were here, on yet another adventure together.
Elizabeth didn't find the fact that David clearly took a shine to Alma off-putting, a little strange, perhaps. But she had to remember and recall that this David model was designed to be as human as possible, to imitate and initiate feelings and emotions; it was only natural if they had been together since he awoke that he would look at her fondly. And it was fondness, if Elizabeth was to pitch a guess, "You love her."
"I'm meant to love all humans." David stated while shaking his head. "No favouritism allowed." He sounded cynical over that, and Elizabeth picked it up with a frown. "I saw how Doctor Holloway looked upon you, is it the same with me?"
"Yes," Elizabeth said sadly just remembering Charlie's somewhat dopey puppy dog looks at times. She couldn't help but smile an upset smile over him, and the fact she wouldn't ever see him again. Her hand instinctively went to her crucifix around her neck, she would and will see him again when her time came, that much she was sure of.
David watched the action with a tilt of his head. Elizabeth had been so lost in her moment of remembering she hadn't realised that David took it in turn to watch her. Blinking slowly he smiled lightly, he didn't wholly care of what Elizabeth thought when it came to himself and Alma. Alma however was the one who never seemed to want others to know. David refused to believe she felt guilt for loving a non-human life form, he could tell she didn't, she just never wished others to know because of the looks, the questions and the queries which them being together would cause and bring up. But now, now there was no crew, and there was only Elizabeth.
"What're you drawing?" David smiled and turned the paper, she raised an eyebrow at the odd humanoid figure yet didn't question it. It seemed to her that someone was trying to find their style. Though, even if the drawing itself was lost on her, she couldn't deny the fact that David had skills. Beautifully detailed and accurate, it was amazing. Artists back on Earth would surely kill to be able to draw so spectacularly. "What are we going to do, David?" Elizabeth sighed, going back to their original topic. No amount of avoidance was going to do the job here.
"Best course of action at this point, would be to continue on."
Elizabeth took that with a pinch of salt, or not considering the lack of it here, pinch of nutrient bars didn't have the same ring though. "Run our resources right down and then go to sleep?"
David's gaze went distant as if he was thinking over all the possibilities which were to hand and which ones would be more beneficial. "It seems like it is the only way to go." He blinked, blue eyes focussing on her again. "It seems pointless to sleep now, after days of travelling." Was it days? David honestly couldn't recall to be honest. Without a watch, or clock, or way to look outside he was uncertain.
"And then you'll be alone." David couldn't help but look at her curiously, "What'll you do? It isn't like this ship needs constant check ups like the Prometheus."
"In fact," David started with a smile, now over Elizabeth's moment of showing she cared and sounded worried for him, he continued on. "The Prometheus didn't need me, not really. Sure, I was needed to check on the crew. But as for suppose check-ups, they didn't exist." David's time was spent doing lessons, watching movies, and talking to Alma. "But do not worry, or fret, for me, Elizabeth. I am sure I will find something to do while we wait to arrive at the Engineer's world." David said, smile still unfalteringly on his face as he looked over the booklet in his hands at Elizabeth, she couldn't see the slightly cynical smile, but he didn't care too much.
Seemingly not having anything else to say to him she merely nodded and rolled the map back up. With a sigh she looked around the dark room before frowning in thought. "I'm going for a walk." Honestly, she hadn't explored the other half of the ship. The other two had, but she hadn't.
"Be safe," David said while not watching her leave. He heard her footsteps pause though, as if she was musing over whether there was something unsafe onboard. He looked up at the ceiling, tilting his head back against the wall, he blinked slowly and looked from the corner of his eyes as her footsteps retreated down the corridor. They were on a warship. Of course there was something unsafe onboard, and David had already spied it, them. It was only a matter of time before Elizabeth would too, unless she was shoving their existence out of her mind for the moment.
Feeling movement again he looked down, David couldn't help but lightly, and quietly, laugh as Alma tried to wrap an arm around him and nestle closer. This if anything caused her face to bury itself against his stomach and her hand ended up clinging onto the material of his suit at his side. He swapped hands and held the pen and booklet in one hand, while his other pushed hair out of her face. The movement and touch of his hand had her eyes squeezing shut. David could tell when someone was waking, and she was definitely waking up.
"Hello, sleepyhead." David whispered while managing to double over and kiss her on the temple. "You've been asleep for a while, how do you feel?" Internal measurements of time could only account for much, to him three hours of sleep was loads. He didn't know whether to a human it was.
"Still tired, but comfy." Alma's voice came out muffled from where she was still nestled close to him.
David ran a hand through her hair. "Go back to sleep, Alma."
"I'm awake now..."
"Are you sure?" David asked while watching as an eye opened, the other half of her face was buried against a pillow and his stomach still. She looked around confused, more specifically the position in which he leaned before realising that she was rising and falling because she was clinging onto something breathing. It was a habit he hadn't dropped. He liked the little odd things humans did, breathing was one of them, blinking...not so much.
She slowly sat up, which meant he had to lean slowly backwards to avoid her hitting her head against his. Rubbing her eyes she stayed half turned and close to him, which made him smile again. Not one for straying far was Alma, and that was fine by him. He liked having her close. "Elizabeth still not back?"
"She came and went." David explained nonchalantly with a wave of his hand. Alma nodded with a confused, bleary eyed look. David sighed, "She's gone for a walk. I presume she has been sitting for too long and wishes to stretch her legs." He explained and noticed her eyes divert to his little booklet.
"Are you keeping a diary?"
"No." David mused that wasn't a half bad thought though. He turned the paper and watched Alma's eyes narrow in thought. Much like Elizabeth, she didn't quite get what she was looking at. Neither needed to know David was drawing what he remembered of Fifield's form on the security cameras.
