TRUE LOVE IS LIKE GHOSTS,
WHICH EVERYBODY TALKS
ABOUT & FEW HAVE SEEN.

The same question,

asked twice.

So much had happened since it was first asked, and to answer it once again? She would have to go back to when it all started. Back to the start from when they first asked her —

P A U S E ,
R E W I N D ,
P L A Y :

❝Becky, why?❞ The question was on everyone's mind, and they all wanted to know. She had set the world on fire, gaining the loudest crowd responses and they all wanted a little piece of her secret ways.

BECKY, WHY'D YOU
DO IT?

Most said that she had snapped, but Rebecca knew the truth. After her defeat in which Charlotte once again held what she most wanted, her flesh had felt so hot. It was like her blood was bubbling, reaching boiling point and at the brim of spilling.

Spilling into madness because in one hand, her best friend grasped onto that title belt she had only held once before.

That one time was an honor, but when standing next to the woman who was a seven times women's champion — her honorable one time reign felt insignificant.

The biggest question roaming in her mind was, what didn't she have that Charlotte did? For most of her championship reign, Rebecca spent a lot of time soul searching.

Coming to terms with who she was and how she reacted to things the way she did because of past good and bad experiences. She questioned what made Charlotte a seven time Women's Champion, and it wasn't a self-destructive habit of comparison.

It was her diving into a serious expedition of truth-searching.

There was no sentiments of greed or jealousy involved because Becky also wondered what someone so athletic as Naomi, someone with a royal wrestling family like Natalya, a once in a lifetime gifted in ring talent and personality like the Boss Sasha Banks lacked they they couldn't be given the same opportunity?

What in the hell was it? A matter of genetics that one can't help? Was one's superior dose of melanin not what the WWE typically wanted in their posters?

Was it too rich for their typical saltine cookie - cutter preference?

It surely wasn't lack of heart or wrestling ability since truly, all the women in the WWE fought extremely hard for just a minute of in ring time to wrestle, or propel their character's personality.

So, was it that neither was a Flair?

Being a Flair, that was timeless. It meant wrestling royalty and back to back classic accomplishments, a one of a kind story of success.

When her friend's other empty arm had reached out to hers, Becky couldn't pry her eyes away from the gold. Why didn't Charlotte reach out to raise her hand with the same arm that held the Women's Championship title?

Was she not worthy of that? Her smile cracked in a genuine one, and that's how Rebecca knew she was standing face to face with someone more important than a competitor who often times brought the best out of her.

     It wasn't Charlotte,
it was Ashley.

Ashley, her best friend. The one who knew her deepest and darkest secrets, the one who she had seen break down multiple times. The one she carpooled with to every single venue. The unperfect side to Charlotte looked down at her with tearful eyes, waiting on that hand shake.

JUST LIKE THAT, Becky knew that if she didn't take the risk, she would lose the chance. In that interval of time in which she stood face to face with her best friend, Rebecca knew that it wouldn't be the same old song and dance.

JUST LIKE HER, the WWE Universe was used to Charlotte's redundant antics. The antics where she would be the epitome of grace when displaying good sportsmanship in raising her opponent's arm or congratulating them.

Becky had seen her do that so many times, and knew what would come after too. After the warm display, Charlotte would go on about how she needed that belt as proof. Proof that she won it through being the better woman, and not because she was a Flair.

Having watched her defeat Asuka left a bitter taste in her mouth, and now, another wave of uncertainty came over Becky.

This time around, it pulled her completely into dark waters, and she was ready to pull the trigger.

Rebecca knew what Ashley feared most for herself an her in ring character, and it was a low blow, but at least she wouldn't stab her in the back.

Poor Charlotte didn't ever want to live in her old man's shadows, but she boasted of the last name after all.

I'll give you something to tremble about. Becky's mind had last thought before knowing that her friend had grown entirely too comfortable with holding gold.

She didn't need to shake her arm. She didn't need pity, she didn't need validation. She needed to be the Women's Champion, and so in that moment — Becky knew that they'd never be the same again.

    A FRIENDSHIP DIVIDED,

FOR HOW LONG?

    No one knew.

Like ghosts in the snow, Charlotte would fade away and tremble before the dark hell Becky would unleash on her.

Like ghosts in the snow, who the Irish lass-kicker was, would melt away.

    The old Becky?

She's dead.

IN THAT MOMENT, she shot her old self down. They didn't take her alive, she shot herself but first aimed where it hurt most.

A bullet-wound to the gold Charlotte could not hold her end to when re-challenged for it from a different kind of monster. It was her biggest mistake thinking she knew Becky Lynch better than anyone.

The truth was, this new Becky, Rebecca didn't even quite know so herself.

And not being herself? For once, that felt entirely liberating. It felt so good to be so unlike her confined happy go'round previous self.

Everyone was cheering her on, and that didn't phase her one bit. The new Becky Lynch didn't care if she was seen as a heel or babyface anymore.

Those two roles were so confining. Everyone was a balance of good and bad. In this case, sometimes the good outweighed the bad, and sometimes the bad outweighed the good.

Regardless of the what she was labeled as, there was one thing more classic than a Flair.

Becky became those imaginary brass rings Vince constantly spoke about, and had cracked the truth behind success in the WWE. She didn't need to depend on a royal wrestling last name, she didn't need to dye her hair blonde and inject her chest with silicone.

Rebecca Quin had made a promise to herself. A promise that she would be the best she could be inside that ring, on the microphone. It was an oath to forever be the straight-fire Irish lass kicker, and kicking ass?

    KICKING ASS WAS TIMELESS

.

[   additional notes   ]

i. first and foremost, a million & one
thank you's to akansha. iBevitt was
so kind as to not only create this bomb-ass book cover art for me, but also bear with my messy instructions. honestly, bless you and thank you so much. everyone go check her insta, it's
filled with amazing edits bc have i not
stressed it enough that she's oh so
talented???

ii. secondly, this story will deal with
a whole lot of 'overcoming obstacles.'
not just for the women, but the men.
i really want to touch on this idea
of a 'collaborative effort' becky
mentioned in her podcast interview
with the beautiful lilian garcia.

iii. thirdly, go listen to
that podcast, it inspired so
much of what is going on this story + also charlotte's latest ep. lilian is such a genius for playing into the storyline with those back to back interviews.

iv. a lot of what i
do with character won't match certain story lines, but some story lines i will be using ... albeit tweaking a lot, but nonetheless using tons of gifs.

finally, I hope this story leaves
you all with the feeling that
whatever you set your heart
and mind to, you can accomplish.
you don't have to let the world
eat you alive, you have to give
the world hell.

makes me feel a strong
kind of way

p.s if Emma isn't somehow incorporated into Evolution I'll be so upset. She and Paige really did help bring about this change for women's wrestling in WWE. Paige may not be able to wrestle anymore, but Emma sure can. Even if it's a one event thing, pls.
