"BLACK BEAUTY"

.

This one's for PornwithPoetry (dem the username 🧎🏻‍♀️) because I realised the depth of this subject while talking to her and immediately decided to dedicate a whole chapter to it. I love you guys <3

"Black Beauty". I was only 8 when I first heard this term. Back then, as an innocent child, it felt so right. It made so much sense. Because back then, as an innocent child, I was brainwashed. Brainwashed to believe everything that the society taught me. No matter how prejudiced or unjust it was, I never questioned it. But today, as a rebel— or whatever shit society would like to label feminists with, for I assure you that I happily accept all those names— it all just seems so misfit. Everyone seems like misfits in this society, to be honest. Because in this society, everyone is expected to be perfect, but in practice, no one really is.

"Black Beauty". A term used for people of colour. A term that screams "Oh they have a dark complexion and yet they are pretty." Yet. That is where the problem lies. That one three-letter word— yet. Racism is such a common practice that people— often us ourselves— say something racist oh-so-casually, as if it has no importance, and could never possibly hurt anyone. But hear me out, it can. Racism, Sexism, Prejudice. All of this can do EMOTIONAL DAMAGE to people, I kid you not. And that's not a small problem. The pressure of keeping up with the ideals of the society is constantly building up, but even powers as great as bearing with such a thing aren't limitless, and when one gets overloaded with burden, one bursts—like a delicate balloon that's overblown— with rage, self-doubt, negativity, depression and many a times even self-harm. Everything and everyone has a limit, humans do too.

"Black Beauty." It's a shame upon all of us as a whole, really, that such a term even exists. And an even bigger shame that so many of us use it so casually as if it doesn't make a difference. Why does "White Beauty" not exist? Is it because all white people are beautiful? Of course they are. But they're not the only beautiful ones, because everyone is beautiful. You are too. No matter how dark your skin is, or how many pimples you have. No matter if even Extra Large doesn't fit you and no matter even if you are shortest in your group. No matter if your lips aren't nice and full, and no matter if your six packs don't exist. You are gorgeous. You are strong. You are enough.

"Black Beauty"? Utter nonsense.

Love Love,
Vri xx.
