001: daddy calum to the rescue
"I'm sorry, what did you say he did?" Calum asked, tilting his head slightly at the administrator. The woman sighed and pointed at a wall.
"Core (cor-ee) scribbled all over the wall with permanent marker."
Calum winced at her words and slowly turned to see the art his three year old son created.
"Oh sh--"
"Excuse me?" The older black woman raised an eyebrow and placed a hand on her hip. Calum rolled his eyes to the wall then turned with an apologetic smile on his face.
"I am so sorry," The brown man glanced down at his son, who drank from his juice box and quietly watched the grown up talk. "I'm sure he didn't mean it."
The woman, whose name he's known for a while, Gladys Dean, chuckled then shook her head.
"Core looked the teacher dead in the eyes with a smile as he did it, Mr. Hood."
"He's only three years old, ma'am. He looks me dead in he eyes when he poops then giggles after." Calum explained, growing impatient with the woman. He got it, his son scribbled on the walls. To be honest, it looked better than the other crap that was hung there.
Gladys made a face at his, too much information, story and pulled the glasses from her face. "Look, I understand that children make mistakes. I've been working here for twelve years so I know." Her eyes moved to the small version of the bigger one holding his hand. "However, he will need to go home for the day. I can't let this go unnoticed. And I will need to talk to his mother about this since she registered him--"
Calum's eyes grew wide as the interrupted the woman. "Uh, that--she--that won't be necessary. I am his father so contacting his mother wouldn't be necessary." He was quick with his words, nervously smiling at the woman.
If Astrid knew she'd flip, Calum thought.
The woman snorted and crossed her arms over her chest. "Now, I can't go bending rules for you 'cuz you some celebrity, Mr. Hood. Policy clearly states if the child is to go home early and if the registered personnal isn't present then they need to be contacted." She deadpanned, her attitude 'accidently' seeping through her words.
He was getting on her nerves.
Calum sighed, growing impatient, himself, but keeping his cool since his son was around.
He smiled tightly. "I understand that's the rule but I'm clearly his dad and this is my son, whether or whether not I registered him. His mother is a busy and stressed woman who doesn't need any add ons." Calum informed sternly but sweetly. "So please...can't we just leave this between us?" He threw on his award-winning smile, trying his hardest to win the woman over.
Gladys sighed in annoyance, holding back an eye roll as she replied to the young man. "Mr. Hood--"
"Please call me Calum." He insisted, with a head shake. 'Mr Hood' was his father not him.
The woman let off a nod then cleared her throat. "Okay, Calum, rules are rules, policies are policies." Her hazel eyes moved down to the quiet child playing with the straw of his juice box. She smiled, almost deviously, as a thought crossed her mind.
"Wouldn't want little Core to be taught that he can break rules, now do you?" Gladys looked up at the boy's father expectantly.
Calum wanted so bad to tell this lady not only about herself but about her job description. In all reality, watching his child is their responsibility when he or his mom isn't present, so instead of chastizing him as if he was a child, they should be doing their job so incidents like this wouldn't happen again.
But he held his tongue from speaking the first thing in his mind and went for the second.
"I'm not teaching him anything, not more than what you all are teaching him, anyways." Calum mumbled the last part, completely disregarding the fact he told himself not to voice what's on his mouth.
But it was word vomit so...once it's out, it can't come back in.
The look on the darker woman's face resembled one of a black mama that was four, five seconds away from smacking you into next Tuesday.
Calum was shook but he had to save face for his little son that made an 'o' with his mouth.
Gladys chuckled bitterly and stood from her chair. This boy must've lost his mind. "Young man, let me tell you something. It is, in fact, my job to watch your child," Calum opened his mouth to say something but she raised a finger. "But, it starts at home. Train your son to behave himself, first and the ones who watch over him can do their part efficiently."
The man's jaw clenched, feeling hot from the lady's words. She didn't know squat about him yet she's trying to sign him off as some bad parent who don't know how to train their child.
He's done his best with the limited time he gets since he's always touring or writing.
It's hard trying to raise a child and be in their lifes when your job is so demanding.
Calum would drop it all for his little boy had it not been for the fact that the band was his only income.
But he didn't leave his child and Astrid to do it all alone like some weak men do nowadays.
He'd never do that.
Even though it was hard, Calum made sure, one way or another, that he was in his son's life.
Yet, here's this woman that barely knows him and she swears she knows him like the back of her hand.
But he wasn't going to get angry and snap on the woman.
Nope...
He will, though, leave a poor rating on Yelp about the school.
So, he sighed, again, and responded. "Just--can I at least tell her, instead. It'll be easier if I told her. And then she'll contact you to confirm that I told her." Calum explained, hoping the woman would just agree so he could leave.
Finally, the lady complied, nodding as she answered. "Alright, but if I don't get a call within twenty four hours than I will call her myself." The woman warned, smiling down at Core.
"Bye grandma's baby." She cooed, breaking her professional facade as she gently pinched the little boy's cheek. Calum rolled his eyes.
He hated Astrid's mother worked at his son's school. She was so quick to open her big mouth about something when she didn't even know him.
Or even take the time out.
But maybe it was his fault because...well, he wasn't the most loyal.
"Goodbye granna. Sorry bout the wall." The little boy apologized, warming both of the grown-ups hearts.
She smiled and nodded. "It's okay, baby. Daddy just need to teach you to know better." Her eyes moved up to his, ice in them as she looked away from him.
"Bye, Mrs. Dean." Calum said, throwing a hand up as he exited as some sort of wave. The woman let off an 'mhm' then rolled her eyes before going back to work.
"Dada, we go home to mumma?" The little boy asked as he skipped to the car. Calum smiled but it faltered when he realized he had to tell his hothead baby mama and ex about Core's little 'accident'.
"Yeah, baby." The brown man replied, reaching his black Jeep.
He sighed, unlocking the doors and opening his arms wide at his son. "Time to ride the daddy train! All aboard to the car seat! Choo choo!" Calum said, mimicking Oscar the Grouch's voice, Core's favorite Sesame Street character.
The smaller one giggled and ran into his dad's arms, causing Calum to chuckle as he picked the boy up and put him on his broad shoulders.
"Dada, too high." Core said in between giggles, holding onto his father's shoulders. Calum bent at his knees and leaned into the the backseat, allowing the boy to climb off and crawl over to his seat.
Calum helped the boy strap into his personal seat and gazed at the little boy.
"You know daddy loves you, yeah?" Calum asked, gently moving a dark lock from his son's forehead. The boy smiled and grabbed his finger.
"Mhm. Daddy love thi' many." Core widly opened his arms and giggled when Calum tickled his sides.
He truly loved his son and would do anything to keep him smiling.
"That's right. Don't let anyone tell you different." He kissed the boy's chubby cheek and locked his door before closing it.
Once he made it to the driver's side he startes the car. Calum reached for his phone, probably considering telling Astrid right then and there.
That's when Core yelled from the backseat. "Dada, I'cream!" He said excitedly, bringing a smile to the man's face.
Calum repocketed his phone and decided to talk to her when they got home. He pulled his seatbelt over his front.
"Let's get some ice cream!" He exclaimed, once again imitating the boy's favorite Sesame Street character, making him scream joyfully.
Calum chuckled, starting the car, and pulling out of the school parking lot to the nearest ice cream parlor.
