CHAPTER 3
🎶We couldn't turn around
'Til we were upside down
I'll be the bad guy now
But no, I ain't too proud
I couldn't be there
Even when I tried
You don't believe it
We do this every time
(Chorus)
Seasons change and our love went cold
Feed the flame 'cause we can't let go
Run away, but I'm running in circles
Run away, run away
I dare you to do something
I'm waiting on you again
So I don't take the blame
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away, run away
(Chorus)
Let go
I got a feeling that it's time to let go
I say so
I knew that this was doomed from the get-go
You thought that it was special, special
But it was just the sex though, the sex though
And I still hear the echoes (the echoes)
I got a feeling that it's time to let it go, let it go
(Chorus)
Seasons change and our love went cold
Feed the flame 'cause we can't let go
Run away, but I'm running in circles
Run away, run away
I dare you to do something
I'm waiting on you again
So I don't take the blame
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away, run away
(Chorus)
Maybe you don't understand what I'm going through
It's only me
What you got to lose?
Make up your mind, tell me
What are you gonna do?
It's only me
Let it go
(Ending)
Seasons change and our love went cold
Feed the flame 'cause we can't let go
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away
I dare you to do something
I'm waiting on you again
So I don't take the blame
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away, run away
(Ending) 🎶
Aruto lowered his mic and knocked back a shot of tequila to wet his throat. Singing wasn't too hard for him, what with his constant need to shout out his jokes every time for his shows, but he hated the dry feeling that was his voice grinding against the walls of his throat every time he sang low notes. He didn't know why, maybe he forced it too much? Whatever the reason was, maybe he could ask Izumi during their spare time? Or maybe ask Vulcan? Or Valkyrie? Not that the wolf ever wanted to talk to him casually, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
"Damn, Aruto. That was some crazy-ass singing", Saber commented, his headfins flicking excitedly. "Where'd you learn to sing like that"?
"I sing in my spare time, just for the fun of it", Aruto replied, doing his best not to blush. "Was it that good"?
"Hey, I couldn't hit that pitch even if I tried", Revi answered.
"You don't even try to sing outside of the *hic* shower now, do you"? Vice, his partner, replied dryly in a deep voice that was slightly slurred from all the saké he had drunk earlier.
"My gramps used to tell me that dancing and playing musical instruments can only be acquired be certain people, but everyone can sing if they try", Aruto mused, lapping at the cake crumbs stuck to the rim of his glass.
"Did he *hic* ever tell you how much of a *hic* good singer Rev here *hic* is"? Vice slurred, nudging his partner gently.
"Honestly, that was only one time, and I was bored", Revi murmured, playing with the edge of his shawl. "I'm not even that good. Heck, I'd sound like a donkey if I tried".
"I bet even a donkey could sing better", Saber giggled under his breath.
"Forget *hic* singing, who wants to grab him some chicks tonight"? Vice suggested, making everyone else glare at him.
"Count me out. I already have a girlfriend", Saber replied.
"I'm not about to make Izumi jealous anytime soon, so I'm out as well", Aruto stated flatly.
"Can I opt out of this"? Revi asked.
"Please do, because Poky the Dino Dong here is clearly drunk off his ass", Aruto answered, just as Vice made his first attempt.
"Hey there *hic* beautiful"! he drunkenly called out to a pink Atlanta Minora woman and her friend, a blue-bodied Atlanta Majora of indeterminate gender. "You up for some *hic* downtime with us"!?
The woman just glowered at him as if she wanted to dump her drink on his head and call it a day, while her friend twitched their fingers in a manner not unlike someone who was ready to wield a couple of spoons as weapons a la Wolverine. Aruto was about to pull Vice down and tell him off when a nearby waitress took care of that for him.
"Excuse me, sir. Your friend has already passed the limit of drinks he's allowed to have", she stated to the men politely, though Saber thought he could detect a hidden note of anxiety in her voice. "Would you kindly ask him to leave"?
"We're all about to leave anyways", Aruto replied, then downed his tequila and pawed her a wad of cash. "I apologize on his behalf, ma'am. We try not to let him drink too much but...well, it still happens".
The waitress merely nodded as she pocketed the cash and allowed the quartet to leave, Revi supporting Vice with his shoulder. Saber pulled out his phone and begin to scroll through it, while Aruto immediately dove into a discussion over his own phone with Izumi regarding something at his workplace.
"You know, we should really try to hang out like this more", Saber begin, holding Vice's tail to guide him as he ambled along. "Well, maybe not at the bar all the time, but maybe elsewhere"?
"We don't all have the liberty to do so, Saber", Revi replied, his pink hands buried under his shawl in response to the cold outside. "I still have the bathhouse to settle".
"And Aruto has his company to think about", Saber replied, seemingly resigned to the obvious truth about their lives. "Don't worry about me, though. My books keep me company all the time".
Revi just barked a small laugh and kept walking, occasionally nodding to whatever statement from Vice that caught his interest. Hanging out with Aruto and Saber weren't always a choice for him, though he often preferred their company over Vice's at times. It wasn't really that Vice was annoying, but there were days where he just didn't have the energy to put up with him.
Inwardly, he wondered if at one point, they would all split up for good. Aruto had been awfully close to Izumi for some time now, and Saber too had recently begin to talk about some girl he had met who shared his interest in books. It was only a matter of time before one of them got married and started devoting their time to their relationship. From the looks of it, Aruto would be the first to go, then Saber.
Revi didn't exactly feel alone without them around, but at times he preferred their company over anyone else. Aruto, despite his overeager attempts to crack puns in the name of trying to humour everyone (and failing miserably), was a good listener, and Saber was a dictionary and gumption packed into a 5'4" frame. Their company was calming, even if it was unexpected.
"Shit, its cold today, isn't it"? Saber asked him at that moment, breaking him out of his reverie.
"It certainly is", Revi mused. "I guess bringing my shawl along was the right idea".
"That doesn't make sense. Its only March", Aruto mused, stowing his phone away. "Everyone was sweating like pigs in the office yesterday".
"Sudden snowfall incoming"? Saber suggested.
"Uh, *hic* guys"? Vice spoke, then pointed at the sky.
A snowflake, its ends sculpted into smoothly-edged curlicues, twirled lazily through the air as it fell towards the ground. It was followed by another snowflake with sharp cross-like edges, then another shaped like a column, then another, and another, and another...
"Hm"? Aruto murmured, catching one on the back of his hand. It shimmered for a moment before melting from his body heat.
"Okay, this is getting weird", Saber noted.
"Yeah, tell that to them", Revi stated, pointing to what was in front of them.
Snow, thick, powdery and white, covered the cement of the next few blocks like a carpet. A few pedestrians were doing their best to wade through the thick snow while several others ducked into cafés and small shops, of which the workers were hurriedly turning on the heaters as the temperatures continued to fall.
"Okay, now we can *hic* panic", Vice slurred, and for that one moment, Aruto agreed with him.
