Chapter 9: Caught
A helicopter flew across the town, the blades cutting through the air, blaring in everyone's ears. The whole town was confused by military's sudden presence. Why were there government officials now walking the streets? Did they even know their town existed?
Evo stepped behind Judy and into her shadow. He knew why they were here. They were here for him. He couldn't run on foot anymore.
He looked up at Judy who was confused like everyone else, and pulled her arm.
"Can we go?" He asked in a worried tone.
Evo heard an engine roar behind him, and he immediately turned around.
A black escalade with tinted windows parked in front of a store only a few buildings away. As the engine turned off, all the doors opened, and out came four large men wearing black pants and tight black shirts. Their shirts could barely contain their beefy muscles, and their eyes were covered with black shades, which made their serious faces all the more intimidating.
The four men stepped onto the sidewalk, and started walking towards them in a slow pace. It was clear that they had not yet noticed Evo, as their eyes wandered elsewhere in the town, but just the sight of them walking towards him made him sweat.
Judy turned around and looked at Evo surprised.
"Didn't you say you were going on your own path?" She asked, clearly oblivious.
Evo knew she was going to ask him that, but he hadn't prepared a reason. Everything was happening so fast. He didn't have time.
"Please?" He begged as he turned around again, only to see that they were getting closer.
Judy studied Evo for a moment. The way he anxiously moved his body around, like he were ready leave.
What's going on with him, Judy wondered. She couldn't stand seeing him that way. She felt like the boy was about to have a panic attack.
She gave the boy a caring smile and nodded.
"Okay, let's get go then," Judy told him, and showed him the clothes she picked out, "look what I got you. Now you can stop wearing that-"
When Judy showed the shirt, Evo's eyes immediately widened. He snatched the shirt from her and began putting it on.
"It's about time you put on some actual clothes," she laughed as she watched him poke his arms and head out of the holes, and asked, "how does it fit?"
As the boy fixed his shirt, he turned around to check the men approaching, and saw that they were less than ten buildings away.
"Loose," he told her as he turned back to Judy, and impatiently asked, "can we go?"
Judy looked at the shirt, and noticed how oversized it was. The bottom of the shirt came all the way down to the middle of his thin thighs.
I really didn't think this through, she thought to herself. She would have gone back to the store to find him something better, but the way she ended her conversation with Miranda kept her from going back. If she went back, it'd be awkward for her.
"Okay," she sighed, "let's get back to the truck then."
Evo nodded and started walking back to the truck without her. Ralph barked at Evo, and walked with him, leaving Judy alone with a pair of kids pants.
"Alright," she sighed and shrugged as she walked behind the two.
Judy looked at the men in black exiting the black trucks. Their arms were thick of muscles, and had veins down from shoulder to hand. Every one of them looked like they were on steroids. Other than the town sheriff and his four officers, she had never seen this many people from the government in Fredericksburg.
What're they doing here? Judy wondered. Nothing goes on around here. They must have the wrong town.
Evo and Ralph reached the truck, and when Evo tried to open the passenger door, he discovered it was locked. He turned around quickly, and yelled out to Judy.
"Open it!" Evo sounded panicky.
Judy reached in her pocket and pulled out her set of keys. She jogged to the truck, and once she arrived, she walked over to Evo to unlock his door.
Right as she opened it, she heard a door open in front of their truck, and when she turned, she saw Miranda walk out of her store.
Miranda immediately looked confused as she saw the amount of government men patrolling the streets.
"What the-" she was about to curse, but stopped when she saw Judy next to the truck.
"Judy, what's happening? Who-" Miranda froze when she laid eyes on Evo. Instead of being confused, she became slightly disturbed.
"Who is that, and why is he wearing the shirt I gave you?" Miranda asked Judy as she pointed at the boy.
Judy opened her mouth, but she couldn't find any words to explain her situation. Instead, she stuttered embarrassingly.
"M-Miranda-" Judy was going to try and joke with her, but Miranda shot another question at her, this time, sounding more serious.
"Who is that boy, Judy?"
Judy looked at her situation for a bit. Evo wasn't wearing any pants, and had a terrified expression on his face. The door was open, and she had just gotten him into it.
She closed her eyes and struggled to breathe.
This can't be happening, she thought to herself.
Judy looked at Miranda, and shook her head.
"No... no-"
"Judy, what're you doing?" Miranda took a step forward and asked her with a stern voice.
"It's not... it's-" Judy stepped back and started walking around to the driver door.
"Judy, listen to me-" Miranda told her as she stepped closer to the truck, "you need to calm down."
"You don't understand..." Judy tried to tell her as she opened the door.
"Judy..." She heard Evo call out to her in the truck. She turned to Evo.
"Please... I wanna go..." Evo begged.
"Don't get in that truck, Judy," Miranda told her, and said to her in a more calm voice, "you're not well..."
Judy's heart sunk when she heard that. She would have expected anyone else in the town say that to her, but not Miranda. Yes, her situation did look a lot like something else, but it wasn't. Although she didn't want Miranda to know, she would've explained it to her, but she didn't even give her a chance.
Judy shook her head at Miranda, and got in her truck. She slammed the door shut, and stared at her.
Miranda was shocked, and started walking to the passenger door where Evo sat by.
"Judy- don't!" Miranda shouted as she ran to the side of the truck.
Judy inserted the key, and started the engine. She pressed the brake, switched the car to reverse, and turned around as she started driving out of the parking lot.
"Judy!" Miranda yelled unbelievably, and started knocking on the window.
"Don't look at her, Evo," Judy told her, ignoring Miranda herself.
Evo did as she was told, and looked down.
"Kid, unlock the door! The button is right here!" Miranda yelled at Evo as she pointed near the door handle.
Evo continued to ignore her, which horrified her even more.
"Judy, this isn't the way!"
Judy had pulled the truck out of the parking lot, and immediately switched it to drive. She then pressed on the accelerator, and started driving on the main road, leaving Miranda behind.
Judy couldn't look back, even if she had to. She thought her best friend would be willing to hear her out. But it was clear to her now that that wasn't the case with Miranda. Her best friend not being understandable wasn't the part that hit her though. It was what Miranda thought of her.
You're not well.
In just three words, Miranda had broken Judy's heart.
